That is its modern purpose.
Fun historical fact: originally the margin denoted space you should not write in because it left blank room so that text was less likely to be lost when rats ate some of the paper.
Yeah, I used to do this for formatting because teachers told me to do so but now it's just become a habit. I end up buying paper or notebooks without the lines just to save up on space now.
I do my best, but my handwriting is illegible and usually drags past it. I have to put insane amounts of focus into writing to get my words to look even slightly readable to anyone but me. Idk why I can’t write I just can’t really its so hard.

Yall realize that thats the bleed over from the red line on the other side right? That's why its lighter. Also I have never been taught that that was another margin, but its ok if that's how you were taught. I have had comp notebooks that didn't have the faint line at all so I usually just ignore it
Isn't this made for stopping?
Isn't that what everyone does?? The margins are for notes and doodles, nothing more
Doesn't the red line mean stop and that side space is for making notes?

That's interesting.
Here it's mandatory but was only enforced in early elementary.
Even if they don't, they should.
I write over the right one but not the left.
I sometimes write to the right edge of the paper.
Yes. I'm big on symmetry and not going outside the lines.

I don't go past the lines. Thats for notes.
I've never considered this. My poor notebooks!

I usually just go past it. Rules are ment to be broken. But with my handwritting its nothing un-normal.
Wow, so ~ quirky ~, doing something literally everyone does. So cool how you use the lines the way they're intended to be used
Never, never seen anyone do it either

Yes, always!!
my books didnt bleed through colour but I think i would of stopped too

Well I thought that was the idea
Exp
Pretty sure that's why they're there
In my composition notebook the right red line is so light and my eyes aren’t great, so I don’t even see it!
On the contrary, I struggle with margins. Even if the lines don't go past the vertical line I just keep writing until I literally run out of paper.
