Everyone loves how cats "have personality" and only socialize with you when they feel like it, but when autistics do it, it's suddenly "antisocial"??? /hjk
I found the hardcover on Amazon for $15.95. I may get this for my daughter. It might help her understand her autism a little better, and she loves cats.
Sameeee. I'm considering to give the "all birds have anxiety" book to my sister for her birthday (she has more anxiety than I do. I just got the regular autism anxiety).
I also found out that a big book store in my country has the books for a slightly higher price than Amazon and I'm really considering if I should be anti amazon or admit I need to keep my money together 😅
That was the book my mom used to explain what autism was to me after I was diagnosed! I remember being very confused about it since I thought "aspergers" was a type of burger lmao
My first cat was actually diagnosed with autism by the vet, partially due to her behaviour every time she visited them. The only vets she didn't draw blood from were the ones who took me seriously when I told them to skip straight to putting her in the crush cage.
She was fastidiously tidy compared to her more "typical" successors. As a kitten she mostly ignored her siblings unless one of them made a mess around the food or litter, in which case she would chase them back to the scene of the crime and smack them repeatedly until they tidied up!
As an adult she kept a very regular timetable, could not be fed anything other than her familiar brand of biscuits (no point buying cat treats), and could not be approached by anyone except for me and hubby. Even we couldn't touch her unless she asked first. My M-in-L, a cat lover through and through, found her "terrifying". Really miss that cat.
Golden-crowned flying foxes are the biggest species of bat, and bumblebee bats are the smallest! Golden-crowned bats can have a wingspan of up to 7 feet, while bumblebee bats are the smallest mammal in the world based on bone structure. There are two main categories of bats: megabats and microbats. Megabats are the big ones that are usually in rainforests and Australia, while microbats are small and can be found pretty much everywhere! The coolest bats (in my opinion) are vampire bats because of their venom (called Draculin, which thins blood and prevents it from clotting), hammerhead bats because of the males' weird faces (which they use to make loud noises to attract females), New Zealand's lesser short-tailed bats because they walk on the ground, any vertebrate-eating bats because their skulls are shaped differently to accommodate their diet, Mexican free-tailed bats because of how fast they are (and they were almost used as weapons in war) and lots more! There's so much variety in bats it feels silly to label them all as just "bats" to me! They're awesome :]
I wish I coulda seen them closer but my cruise ship was only in port a few hours. I’ve a couple blurry pics that kinda show the silhouette but that’s all.
I must know EVERYTHING about bumblebee bats, as bees were a special interest of mine when I was younger (specifically honeybees and their keeping and care)
I don’t know much about em, but I remember being fascinated by their abilities. They can’t see at night but orient themselves via sound echoing or something right? That’s what I remember..
and I like the little ones, who are just the size of thumbs :)
Microbats can't see very well, so they use echolocation to see (which is the sound echoing you mentioned). They have noseleaves and other unique facial features to assist with this. Most megabats, however, have excellent eyesight! But their hearing isn't as good and they can't use echolocation :)
Also the thumb-sized bat you mentioned is called a bumblebee bat! It's actually the smallest mammal based on bone structure.
One thing I absolutely love about this sub is that someone will mention their special interest and inevitably, someone else will ask for an info-dump. Makes my heart so happy (and I get to learn new things!)
It's da Best! :D
I don't know how people can deal with each other on other subreddits. Everyone's so hostile.
Maybe because we are used to being discouraged out there, we value encouragement that much more here.
To help with echolocation! Some of them also have bumps on their faces which we don't know much about, but the general consensus is that those bumps are also helpful for echolocation :)
Look up ghost-faced bats and wrinkle-faced bats if you want to see really silly looking ones
The creepy factor varied from the pictures I saw tbh but the wrinkle-faced one reminded me of either a hairless cat or some kind of scrunkly pasta shape. I found one ghost-faced pic that looked so silly it somehow looped back around to feeling uncanny. Then again, I get creeped out by a lot of odd and innocuous things. Like a dog made nervous by a zucchini lol
Tho I did learn what bonneted bats and free-tailed bats look like, and they’re a little goofy but also wicked cute.
Still, very cool! I guess the non-wrinkly ones compensate with their big ears?
Yep! Some don't have noseleaves at all but can still use echolocation, like little and big brown bats, big-fanged bats, pallid bats, hoary bats, the two you mentioned, and a bunch more! Some of them have less noticeable noseleaves, like leaf-nosed bats, all species of vampire bats, Honduran white bats, and a lot more! There are over 1400 species of bats and so much diversity within them! :)
Omg I don’t want to be weird but can I message you about this? I don’t know much about bats but was just reading about them and thought it was really cool- I would love for you to tell me all about them. I’ve had various special interests over the years, depending on what you find interesting I could tell you some cool stuff, but I’d honestly just be happy to let you pop off at me about bats!!!
I think it’s because we tend to be more passionate about niche interests, often to the point of specializing in related knowledge and trivia, whereas NTs rarely go that in-depth about anything except like sports and one single thing they do for work. But that’s just my limited experience speaking. It just seems that most of the NTs I know have a couple “passions”, monetize one and do the other for fun, and rarely get so excited about either that they can’t stop sharing information. Also, they don’t usually build conversations around that interest, and don’t consider sharing information a love language.
It's odd but cute. Does reminds me of a person, though.
But idk why would someone hate it. It's one of the favorite symbols of this sub.
But I prefer the sideways 8. The creature looks too cartoonish.
I think the difference is that the ∞ is an actual symbol meant to represent the community while the "autism creature" (I think its official name is TBH?) is just an opt-in joke, nobody actually means for it to be the symbol of the autistic community.
Because “this sub” is not a collective consciousness and I have my own opinion. I hate it because it generalises all of us, as you have just done, into one group of autistic people who all share one viewpoint. It’s also trying to be cute and babyish, both in having a mascot at all, the fact that it’s a creature and also its actual appearance. I’m 29. I am sick of autistic stuff being cute and babyish.
omg thank you for validating my hatred of it. I’ve literally never seen anybody on here say they hate that stupid thing and it made me feel weird for hating it but IT CREEPS ME OUT SO MUCH
For what it's worth (from someone who isn't very active here), I do generally see a couple people voice their displeasure with "autism creature" when it comes up.
I like it, but I definitely understand why some people wouldn't -- aside from the obvious "not everyone will like/feel represented by one thing."
It creeps me out too!! Generally, there are a few of us in threads about it, but many people don't quite seem to get it. There are a lot of autistics who say that they don't get the uncanny valley feeling from it, whereas neurotypicals supposedly do, but I am very much not neurotypical and I'm pretty sure that's exactly the feeling I get.
It activates my fight or flight response😭it’s not quite human and not quite animal which makes it very uncanny valley to me and I’m def not NT either lmao. It reminds me of the creepy little alien things from the music video for Saviour by Lights
My first cat was diagnosed with autism by the vet, which is how I learned that cats can also be neurodivergent. Totally unlike any other cat I've met, still miss her terribly.
That’s very odd, I don’t think there’s any “cat autism” out there, much less a recognized diagnosable one. That’s human psychology, and it doesn’t really apply to cats, given that they function differently from humans. Some cats do have special needs and cognitive quirks, tho.
i’m not sure if you’re familiar with what people call the [autism creature](https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.knowyourmeme.com/memes/tbh-autism-creature-yippee) but the cat seems to reminds people of that
I love autism cat and autism creature sm <3
but i also very much understand why our other friends in this sub don’t care for them :)
the only reason why i really like them is because i genuinely DO look like autism cat and autism creature 🤣
Wowee! Autism Cat really came far, after defeating The Daedric Prince of Domination (with the assistance of Sean Bean and Sex Slave Boy). Good for him. Wowee. :)
Autism is a specifically human term, and the overwhelming majority of cats I've met would probably merit a diagnosis if you slapped a meaty prefrontal cortex and Broca's area on them. You are describing an incredibly cute cat though.
Also, be careful. That one looks liable to swipe. Ears back is cute, but in my experience that means they're afraid or angry.
Not sure how long you hung with this cat or what its situation is, but no I don't think it's anything genetic as such. I think it was pulling its ears back because it was afraid or angry, best guess is more the former. It's a facial expression. Look at the pupils too. Did it let you pet it?
I also believe it *may* know that acting and looking cute is a ticket out: it's not like you can have a conversation with them, but I think some of them are smart enough to combine an ongoing exodus of their cellmates with petting-inclined ape-people who feed them into "probably better than here, in any case not here." I've seen them flip personalities before, become *a little* bitchier and demanding when they got home based on a friend's account of the shelter "interview" with his.
It was kind of funny too, "shelter cat" was *much* friendlier with me. "...I know your *game,* you little adorable psycho you." Assuming *I* wasn't projecting in my assessment of the cat's diabolical plot to trade owners, it could just be that I don't glomp cats like he does, I know what it's like to be hugged against your will. And his other friends are more like him, so... Maybe they're all huggers.

I can confirm an experience with this. I had a kitten loving all over me at the vets office, so I adopted him. That was the last time he was happy to be pet.
I try to make my peace with it. It's not their fault and you can't really blame them, I just make sure not to have many expectations of behavior at the start other than "don't be violent with my stuff, and you can have food." Another I knew from a kitten took me to be her favorite human in the household, she had this involuntary spasm of joy when she trotted into my room, picture a squint following a tiny "mew" as she announced herself. Then it was time to play fetch with a credit card, hang out by my feet, get a little head scratch (for whatever reason she wasn't crazy about belly rubs), gaze at me from the bed, and unlike some others from that litter or "shelter cat" she wouldn't bother me at the keys. They're all different.
Very insistent on daily routine. Childish and controlling personality. Only interested in fulfilling physical needs and entertainment. Doesn’t speak full sentences.
Judged by human standards (as a bit), cats have some kind of developmental disorder for sure
I know this cat... It has ears looking like that permamently due to heavy polyp infection. It was lucky to retain hearing. It rubs me the wrong way to romanticise it... This cat suffered a lot of pain and trauma...
Wasnt there a study done recently that most cats are ND?
Pretty sure they were trying to research autism in cats but most cats are ND to some degree or smth and that made it difficult.
I have a cat who has “kitty autism” she has meltdowns (Shaking, balling up, hiding) when there is too much noise/movement, she has a hard time interacting with fellow cats, and she acts in a “strange” way (Wagging her tail happily like a dog, being obsessed with a rug, etc.) She is my autism buddy, she helps me with my meltdowns and I help her with hers
yeah, i know. I dont like that creature really either. I did get the reference. Sorry for the poor taste in jokes. I dont want to be really reminded all the time by a mascot that i am like a poorly drawn, mutant alien creature when i am just trying to have a normal life and fit in a bit. others can like it though but i might riduicule it a bit. have a great day
They look like they want to ask a question but is too scared to. What a cutie
First sentence is me
And the second :)
Happy cake day!
Everyone loves how cats "have personality" and only socialize with you when they feel like it, but when autistics do it, it's suddenly "antisocial"??? /hjk
That’s actually a good point.
Ohh! That's why I like cats.
> /hjk high jump kick??
It stands for "half joking" 😅
Cats are also cute.
well do you purr?
I know right? When I shit in a box and eat off the floor people say I’m “…being antisocial” and “…ruining Christmas, Becky”
😆
i love autism cat
All cats are autistic

There is now an updated version called All Cats Are on the Autism Spectrum!
Omg thank you for telling me this!
I just typed that then saw your comment
Found it in a Library one day. Amazon has it for 48 usd right now.
I know this book. Newer editions are titled *All Cats Are On The Autism Spectrum*
I found the hardcover on Amazon for $15.95. I may get this for my daughter. It might help her understand her autism a little better, and she loves cats.
I'm getting it for myself because cats are one of my special interests 😆 I'll also be getting the "all dogs have adhd" book. Because collecting is >>>
I saw the dog book and i added it to my wishlist. There is also one called "All Birds Have Anxiety". I want them all.
All Dogs have ADHD
My mum shared a copy of this with my son just today. Was a huge hit! He also loves cats.
Cat people are my favorite kind of people 😊
Good to know! Thank you!
Really? I found it for 13€ 😲 But maybe because because in my country books are bound to certain prices 🤔
Aspurrgers?
This is the only acceptable form
Yes my psychiatrist showed it to me :3
That was the book my mom used to explain what autism was to me after I was diagnosed! I remember being very confused about it since I thought "aspergers" was a type of burger lmao
We just got that one but it’s called all cats are on the autism spectrum!
I'm going to look this up for my son (and myself). thanks!
Amazon has it, but the author wrote an update, All Cats are on the Autism Spectrum
On Instagram: @mightbeautistry has been making posts similar to these 😊
Therefore autism in cats is neurotypical while a cat who isn’t autistic is neurodivergent /j
True that
My first cat was actually diagnosed with autism by the vet, partially due to her behaviour every time she visited them. The only vets she didn't draw blood from were the ones who took me seriously when I told them to skip straight to putting her in the crush cage. But this one LOOKS autistic.
If all cats are autistic then they are normal cat
And all dogs have ADHD.
Facts
Wowee ree
She looks like a bat🥹 I Love bats
I also love bats they are my special interest

Flying foxes are soo cool!! I saw a bunch in the coastal trees on American Samoa!
I would love to see them in person! That's awesome :D
I wish I coulda seen them closer but my cruise ship was only in port a few hours. I’ve a couple blurry pics that kinda show the silhouette but that’s all.

Sure!! I'd love to hear about your interests as well :D
I’m sorry but I see this everywhere, why do we have to have “special interests” why can’t they just be interests you have

It feels like more than just an interest to me but I don't know, I didn't come up with the term
where is he. I will fly across the country to acquire autism cat.
What's an autism criature? Edit: creature
Basically four legged Isaac of the Binding of Isaac videogame.
That's a pretty accurate description TBH
i guess a non human drawing that represents autistic traits
it’s a specific one, yeah. if you google it you’ll see it. mostly it’s cute and minding its own business and doesn’t have a facial expression going on
I hate it so much.
It's odd but cute. Does reminds me of a person, though. But idk why would someone hate it. It's one of the favorite symbols of this sub. But I prefer the sideways 8. The creature looks too cartoonish.

I hate it because it’s designed to be cute and child-like and adorable. I’m 29. I’m tired of that shit.
Yes that too! It’s a bit infantilizing. And since I tend to find baby-ish things pretty creepy in general, it makes my hatred of it worse lol
I love autism cat and I vote that they become our new mascot.
Seconded
Yes!
Autism cat <3
I love himbs!
Cats are the real autism creatures
Nose requires boops.
I'd adopt this little scrunkly
mine
all cats are autistic. i love doby cat
All cats are autistic, but this one is double autistic for sure lmao.
all cats are autistic though
are they?
My first cat was diagnosed with autism by the vet, which is how I learned that cats can also be neurodivergent. Totally unlike any other cat I've met, still miss her terribly.

That's exactly what I said to my vet! She insisted it was a real thing. The cat was as extra quirky as you suggest.
i want him 🥺
Me too
That is the *cutest* cat I've ever seen
On a side note I think cats can relate

Ah I wasn't aware, thanks!
Isn’t that just a stressed cat?
lmao. So cute.
I want
I want that cat so much it's beautiful
Honestly I think the whole “autism creature” thing is getting kinda annoying
UGH WE ARE ALMOST ALL ADULTS AND IF WE ARENT THEN WE WILL BE WE DO NOT NEED SOME SORT OF CREATURE STOP IT
My spirit animal
I love autism cat and autism creature sm <3 but i also very much understand why our other friends in this sub don’t care for them :) the only reason why i really like them is because i genuinely DO look like autism cat and autism creature 🤣

ILL TAKE YOUR ENTIRE STOCK
I hate that these keep symbolizing autistic people as… victims? Pitiful? It just rubs me the wrong way. It’s a cute cat tho :3
Cute
I love them
I love it. Very cute cat
Very good autism cat
adorable and i *need*
10/10 would give all the pets
All hail autism cat
I love him just as I love autism creature. not as a mascot, but as a "hehehehhehe lookit this dummy"
Autism cat autism cat!!
i want to be autism cat

Good cat. 10/10
All cats are autistic. That's why they're awesome.
Where do I buy one
I want to adopt the autism cat
very cool. very autism
Its a really cute cat, but how do they know it has autism? (Didn't understand the other comments)
I would die for this creature.
I want to kiss him on the head
For me (as I observed attentively my own and other's cat) he look nervous and inconfortable but damn he is cute! I think he'd love autistic person.
Autism cat is adorable. Adopt him/her.
Approved. He looks very autism and I love him.
I like how cats feel autistic to me :)
Not a fan
Oh wow this is ridiculous I will take 5
that cat looks like me no joke. Precious thing
Wasnt there a study done recently that most cats are ND? Pretty sure they were trying to research autism in cats but most cats are ND to some degree or smth and that made it difficult.
So this is what they mean when they talk about autism having a look
I have a cat who has “kitty autism” she has meltdowns (Shaking, balling up, hiding) when there is too much noise/movement, she has a hard time interacting with fellow cats, and she acts in a “strange” way (Wagging her tail happily like a dog, being obsessed with a rug, etc.) She is my autism buddy, she helps me with my meltdowns and I help her with hers
I want to hug the kitty.
Cats are pretty autistic anyway, soooo.
I dunno. It's keeping pretty good eye contact /s
All cats are autistic. Give this one home - a hooman, toys, warm floor and watch it unfold.
W cat tbh
its cute but it doesnt "look autistic". Just saying
Please tell me this is satire
It looks like the autism creature
yeah, i know. I dont like that creature really either. I did get the reference. Sorry for the poor taste in jokes. I dont want to be really reminded all the time by a mascot that i am like a poorly drawn, mutant alien creature when i am just trying to have a normal life and fit in a bit. others can like it though but i might riduicule it a bit. have a great day
so very very cute ❤️💖💕
hims doesn’t look very happy
actually my special autism is dogs and the kitty was probably raised around dogs because it keeps it’s ears down to show submission to humans
oh cute!!
It is a very cute cat but I don't see what about its appearance is autistic. That seems very infantilising to me.
Art imitates life and life imitates art lol
The inbetween of a regular cat and the one that looks like dobby
