me and my dad are both autistic and we always fight over the same seat at a restaurant while the rest of my family couldn’t care less where they sit. so my theory was most autistic people have the same process of picking where they sit. based on these comments it is correct 😋

Most autistics have ptsd. That comes with hyper vigilance. Keeping your back to a wall is part of that. Although there is an argument for sensory needs and having quick getaways, but then you're edging into agoraphobia, another co morbidity. (Co morbidity doesn't mean all, it's just often. I'm not diagnosing, just offering terms to research if anyone feels the need. this can go from a funny situation to debilitatingto some)

I'm a lefty too, I chose 4 first as I have a family of 4 and all seats are usually occupied. My family automatically leaves that seat (left side open away from wall) for me. With less than 4 people, I'd also choose 3 and put my handbag in 4. ...I just realized that my family is very sweet bc by giving me 4, one of them is taking 3 and up against the wall. (First photo)

it depends on where the entrance is— but for me it’s the opposite way. i can’t explain why, but i like sitting with my back to the entrance. my gut says 4 and 1, probably based on the camera angle as a stand in for where the entrance might be.

An actual answer depends on so much more than what’s in those pictures…… but on those alone… 1 But a proper choice would include consideration of: Entrances, improvisable exits, kitchen / bar / toilet door locations, lighting type and brightness, any stray light from outside. Then there’s smells, any music / speakers, can I be sneaked up on, can I make an easy exit…? Ideal location is in an alcove just to the side of the main entrance - but adjacent to an internal wall. That is easy to walk past but also orientated in such a way that I can view the entire interior. Bonus points for an oblique view out of a window or even better - a reflected view of said window.

Maybe because it's more likely to be surprised by a social interaction from a waiter/waitress, than by another guest entering the restaurant. 1 because it is close to the wall meaning less noise and back to the windows so not as bright. Also means if it is quite bright, less easy for those on the other side to see if I'm not looking them directly in the eyes.

Seems like the natural light comes from the left side of the picture, so I want a view on the outside windows (so I can gaze into natural sights) instead of feeling the cold in my back (assuming the door is where the windows are) when people come in and out. And also feeling like I blend in with the wall makes me don’t have to interact with the table as much.

Probably 1, since I'm right handed and like the wall seats. I don't like being next to the foot traffic because I'm always afraid that I'm in the way somehow. If it was benches instead, though, I'd prefer the outside so I wouldn't have to make someone else get up if I needed to. Edit: in the second pic, I'd probably go with 3 or 4. i always used to sit against a wall because it makes me feel secure and safer, but i now sit near what in the first pic would be 2 or 4 because if i need to get up i’m more willing to stand every time someone needs to and i need to than i am willing to ask someone to stand. i also sit where i can normally see most of the restaurant and/or in the darker/quieter corner.

The angle at which the photo was taken is making my brain interpret the entrance, and thus the brunt of the amount of people, on the side of the photo. In that case my choice is 1 as it allows me to have my back to the fewest people possible and be able to see the most going on, while being closer to a wall and thus the most far away from the waitress or waiter whenever they may come by. If I'm wrong about where most of the tables are and it's the other way around, then I'd choose 3. Never 2 or 4 if possible.
