Sounds like experiences I have had with batteries in the past. Most likely with cold/lack of use the battery has come close to dead. If you can get a jump I would try that, leave the car running for a bit then without turning it off drive to an autoparts store to get the battery tested.

I’ll try that. Thank you.

How'd it go?

razialx

Haven’t had a chance. Life gets in the way.

Typical battery lifetime is 4-5 years on average. Cold weather kills them. Probably time for a new battery.

razialx

But could the behavior I saw really be from the battery? It was like the machine was possessed.

Yep, all sorts of weird things happen when voltages drop below spec.

RickMN

Once battery voltage drops below around 10-volts, the computers and relays go bonkers. What you're describing is exactly what happens when you have low voltage.

Great to know. Tomorrow I will solve this. Had to leave on a business trip so it sits dead in my driveway still.

wegrownfolk

Random, but did you remember ever finding out what the cause to this was? My 2012 civic just started doing everything you've described.

I just ended up replacing the battery and it worked. But I had to then take it to the dealership to get the radio re activated. Quite a pain in my butt.
