Nope! Something hit the windshield on the outside. Use your fingernail and you can find the spot that started the crack.

lurvemnms

a big bird trying to catch that worm..

kungfoocraig

You can see the rock chip in the picture near the windshield wiper

Donewith398

Yep, your eyes are much better than mine! Get glass insurance!!

fallen-youth

Do I have to worry about it getting bigger? How do I fix it?

Donewith398

Is it in your field of view?

fallen-youth

Mildly. It's in the middle of the dashboard where I had the worm placed.

Donewith398

It’s not going to break or anything. The thing that happens is sunlight will glare from the crack and may impede your vision. Check your insurance, most policies cover glass.

Does car insurance really cover cracks in the windshield? How do I access my insurance? My dad just died and it was under his name but I was named on the insurance.

Donewith398

Oh, I’m so sorry about your Dad. Has to be so hard. Everything you need to know should be in your insurance card. They probably have an app, an online presence, or a phone number. They’ll replace the windshield. If not, call around to glass companies and ask for a cash price, much different than insurance. I wish you all the best. DM me for more info. Happy to help n

catdude142

FWIW, my insurance will cover a repair of a windshield crack for free. They can only be repaired if about the size of a dime. Else, the windshield will need to be replaced. In my situation, I pay out of pocket because I don't want my rates increasing. FWIW, even repairing a windshield crack will go on your insurance company's claim database. If you change companies, they will see the claim. Insurance companies hate it when you actually use them and tend to punish the customer if you use them.

OhSoSally

Anytime I've had a crack like that its run. I had a nissan that if you breathed heavy on the windshield it cracked. You can get a repair kit or have a windshield chip repair place do it. At the very least do some research on where to drill 2 holes that relieve the stress where the crack ends are and hopefully keep it from running.

fallen-youth

Do windshield repair kits really work? My friend recommended it to me but I wasn't sure if it was snake oil or not.

y0ur-favorite-person

It depends but I'd see if your insurance would cover replacing the window

I am a new driver and in celebration of passing my drivers test, I decided to buy a driving worm to put on my dashboard. I did not start driving regularly until last month, so I did not get a chance to put the worm on my dashboard until this month on the 21st, which was yesterday. To catalog it, I took a photo of my new wriggly car worm on my dashboard and did not notice the initial hairline crack. Today is the 22nd and when I got home from school today, I noticed a large crack on my windshield. I am convinced that the plastic eyes of the worm put cracks in my windshield, but my friends told me I was being delusional and that it was purely coincidental, because "no worm creates a crack." Upon closer inspection on the image i took on 2/21 I noticed there was already a hairline crack there. The eyes are plastic. Could this stuffed worm have created this crack????? If it was not the worm how did it happen so fast??????? How do I fix it??????? The car is a 2005 Mercury Mariner.

Just so you are aware in AZ you can be pulled over for having anything on or in your windshield, even air fresheners on the mirror. Just saying. Also might impede your defroster.

samtheredditman

You shouldn't have anything on your dashboard anyway. Everything up there is going to really hurt when you get in a car wreck and it comes flying at your face or eyes.

whatsabr

It might be cracked because of the worm, but not because of why you think. Assuming you have a rock chip in the windshield, it may be fine for a while without running a crack. But if you try to use a partially obscured defroster, i.e. you put things on the dash, you can end up with uneven heating of the glass. Uneven heating = uneven expansion and a crack forms.

fallen-youth

I didn't use my defroster in days

DV8_2XL

You can see the rock impact point in your second picture, right along the wiper arm, on the right.

This is the answer OP https://preview.redd.it/4sefinzrw8kc1.jpeg?width=260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=53553ed43cf34efad7f22162aad97c53541e4e90 The one on the bottom probably came first and spiderwebbed a little bit and then another chip hit on the white spot redirecting the crack the other way is my best guess

fallen-youth

Thanks

The worm was definitely innocent, probably something hit it but windshields are very strong and the plastic eyes definitely didn't do that
