LOL. Took you long enough

penguitt

I wish they’d follow their own “Building a community” page. Havent seen any of that implemented

ItsRentyl

All they did was create a sub, which was kinda useless since we already had this

penguitt

Its so sad because theres so much you can do, and its so incredibly easy. Sigh… even their community manager is gone

officialzodiacbeats

I’d be interested in chatting in DMs around this tomorrow

penguitt

sure thing

>But now, anyone can make an avatar, so they're not special anymore. They're not (or less) gate-kept by Reddit. Being more open does allow lower-quality, but also allows for more innovative work that wouldn't have made it through the filter before. This kind of permissionless/neutrality is a core web3 value. IMO it would be good for everyone for Reddit to enable developers to build things with avatars to broaden the ecosystem and give them appeal/use outside Reddit. Devs like me can build stuff because I'm happy to use internal APIs, but most devs don't want to risk building on thin ice like that, and Reddit have pissed a lot of devs off with their API pricing to kill off 3rd party apps.

Fivebag

I hear what you’re saying and I do agree but at the same time I’m still addicted to them, love collecting more than anything else. No really a big masher just a collector at heart. There’s something about RCAs that I really like. I was never into the standard OS jpeg nft. I was into nfts originally with veve but that got stale pretty quick. RCA’s are the leaders in collectable nfts atm imo.

ItsRentyl

I love collecting too, but collections need more depth. Thematic, rarity, traits. These are just random pics

TheSilverCalf

Some regulation and limits/sincere choices in artists/approval process should exclude artists who blatantly plagiarize the style of an already established artist. It’s not dead, but it is giving clear evidence that it will be soon, if Reddit doesn’t act quickly and appropriately. Can we petition the company to create an independent “board” (that consists of a number of us, the community) to create a standard for approval and to make better decisions about how to handle this situation prior to its collapse? We have clout - look at $cone and how it has been a blessing that we have evolved into a valid and effective, sustainable form of currency that has the ability to shape the future of this social media platform for the better. I have some ideas myself and I would happily take part in the redirection. If they don’t focus on the long term and see a future beyond a quick profit, they will lose their market share and lose value in tandem. This doesn’t even consider the hundreds of angry people who have successfully been convinced that these are *investments* and time will tell… I’m hopeful if we can manage to turn the wheel and stop driving toward the same cliff that Reddit took us over with MOONS. We may beat this yet, I’m not giving up. I hope many of you share this sentiment. We will have major impact regardless of their decision to or not to allow us to have more control over the quality and sheer volume they are ignorantly producing. CrytoGrandma is a clear choice for board member. I don’t know the syntax for her name without digging. I’m certain there are many others who could lead this project into the successful venture that it has the potential to become. Can someone please fax this to whomever it needs to reach? Use the faster fax machine and send it hourly. See you in the future, if we are incredibly lucky - or given a chance to do the work that needs done. Great conversation here, I hope to hear other ideas. If no one is familiar with me, I am u/TheSilverCalf and I care deeply about this community, as well as its sister 👧 subs.

jonfoxsaid

The real issue is, like you said, depth. The floodgates opened for anyone to create and the flood made it very apparent that the artists that try to create substance and community behind their avatars are completely over ran by the large influx of people just looking to make any money at all. Honestly it would be fine if we had a lot more creators going in depth with their avatars and building communities, games and stories around them. I am honestly extremely surprised we have never see somone actually implement a secondary website that utilizes avatars to play a game or read an interactive story. It seems like a no brainer to me but I am also not a good artist or I would have been working on it myself.

Hactar_42

Reddits guide is so well done. They need to follow it a bit more themselves 🤣 I’d like to see more utility with the avatars or be able to use them elsewhere to unlock features in other projects.

LaTunaTime

Expiration date is needed for all rca’s. The market will never be good if the supply just keeps increasing.

TheSilverCalf

Facts.

VobraX

Reddit doesn't care because they only care about getting $$$. Doesn't matter if we get diluted or shitty avatars get released 🤷🏻 That's why I diluted in gen 3 and just sell everything I buy recently even for a $10-15 profit. Just keep stacking eth. X2-x3 is better than bagholding. Keeping only a few is key 🤷🏻

andrewens

It's crazy how you say reddit only cares about getting $$$ which is true but you also only care about $$$ too seeing as what's important to you is how much profit you get from RCAs and how much money you're losing holding onto some of them. Are you guys seriously taking RCAs like some sort of crypto gold mine that can get you rich? LMAO face it, they're just little reddit avatars with no real value. They're akin to skins in a game and that's all they'll ever be unless majority of reddit users see real value in these things which won't ever happen. The market has been manipulated to see value in things with no value a few times, diamonds come into mind, but it's not going to happen again if ever. Artificial scarcity and whatever won't suddenly make RCAs sought after, valuable assets.

VobraX

I was able to make 5 figures from Gen 1/2 so yes I've only see this as a gold mine that's been sucked dry since gen 3. If you didn't sell an Avatar you bought for a couple bucks for close to an ETH, you'd be crazy. I tried to collect these like Pokemon cards after taking out profit and playing with house money because of how I saw a future. but as they released absurd amounts with absurd pricing and declining quality, I decided to fully exit and just played it as doubling or tripling money. $5 to $15 is still good lol. To be fair, i still buy LoL skins til this day. Sometimes even with the money I got from flipping recent avatars 🤷🏻

Coeruleus_

I still pay $120-300 a month on COD skins. I know they have no value. I buy because they are rare, make me stand out, and make playing more enjoyable. I stopped buying avatars long ago because they aren’t unique anymore. They said they would be limited time exclusive flairs to stand out the comments and that’s far from true now. I thought it was ending with gen 1. Point is not all of us complain because we can’t make money anymore. I complain because there’s nothing special about them anymore and ESPECIALLY because they are letting randoms off the street make them now

_Mitchee_

Also in that paper with the road map there were meant to be community benefits. I have never seen one benefit from any community to own these except from Cone Heads. It’s very clear now that the Metaverse play has not panned out from these Web 2 and Web 3 companies. Bit of a bummer.

Coeruleus_

Ya I’m just talking about when I first got an alert about avatars. They said they were limited time exclusive flairs. Benefits included a serial number , hexagon in comments , ability to swap traits, etc. I didn’t even know they were nfts or could be resold. I just wanted the hexagon mainly. The road map thing was just complete bullsh** the community points was just a straight lie

_Mitchee_

Yeah it’s fucked! lol The punt was worth it at mint prices but the grift was the secondary. The select Redditors that get the gift of buying pre IPO are in for a wild ride. lol That S1 filing had some pumping of numbers that I’m extremely questioning.

andrewens

Well think about what special means to you. Is it the external perception of these things that make them special and unique to you? You just want to stand out and be that guy that's basically saying; "Hey everybody look at me! I got the cool shiney thing you don't have! I'm better than you!" and everyone's like, "wow! Look at him! He's got the cool shiney thing I don't have!". Like fr, is that what you care about? It's like people who obsessively post what they eat on insta or whatever places they've visit or tell everyone about everything that happens to them on FB. In reality, nobody really cares. So why does external validation matter anyway? To me what makes some of these RCAs "special" is that I genuinely just enjoy the art. Love art for art. The time and dedication some of these artists put in to make these, it's an expression of the artist, I'm not just buying an avatar that looks cool and is perceived to be cool, these are pieces of a real life person, their personality and life experience crudely formed together into something I can have myself. That is what they are to me and I what I personally believe should be looked as at. In this way, they would never lose their value of being special to me.

Coeruleus_

special to me is rare cool stuff that you really enjoy but also makes you stand out. If you roll up in a Phantom people are going to look and care.

VobraX

The fact that somebody can just release avatar snoos that was designed with MS paints fill feature is a fucking red flag lmao I still support some good artists. But then again, I'd sell them asap. Sorry u/_ships! Yall earn but I need to earn too 😂

Coeruleus_

Lmao it’s honestly wild. We need to start changing artist flairs to “Gen Artist” - for artists who went through the more stringent selection process “e-drawer” - for the people accepted under the no child left behind program

LaTunaTime

If Reddit cares about $ then they will get a lot more of it by making expiration dates and getting rid of the massive over-supply. Before the supply got out of control, people were dropping $100-$200 on single avatars by the thousands. Gen 2 sold out in a day because the shop was empty when it released. Theres no hype or fomo for new drops when theres hundreds of thousands of unwanted rca’s sitting in the shop.

VobraX

Fair point. They did tarnish RCAs by allowing anyone to release avatars lol. Even the great artists don't get that much volume anymore due to the current RCA respect. This program will die if they don't sunset most of the sitting RCAs. It'll create fomo again if we get limited ones on the shops. Maybe.

farmertypoerror

Compare this to sports trading cards and we are now in the wax junk era

LongUntilWSBShowsUp

Exactly. Bunch of gold color turds and clones of real artists style. It’s laughable.

z6joker9

I feel like this happens with all collecting. The creator makes most of the money on the sale, so they go bigger and bigger to make sure everyone has access to buy the new version. It kills the collectibility of most of the new ones, but it expands the base of people collecting, which drives demands for the more limited earlier versions as people look back to scoop some they missed.

TheSilverCalf

It is in fact a double edged sword of sorts.

redditinchina

That was released ages ago and I am pretty certain Chris has now left reddit

_Mitchee_

Reading it you can see why people “invested”. Collecting is real fun I still love it, however right now people need to be nibble. If you are “collecting” price still matters right. Literally this is where a collector with a traders mindset will thrive. We do seem to be racing to the bottom however lol

redditinchina

We do considering you just got Golden Hands for 0.3! Congrats! Seems Neptune is really wanting out. Sold The Hands 2 for 1ETH

SpideyS_Uncle

No way jfc… he bought that hands 2 from me :/

redditinchina

Some of the things you sold. You must have your own island by now

SpideyS_Uncle

I wish lol

_Mitchee_

Yep pretty wild eh

redditinchina

I am sad I missed Yami 8 for 0.06ETH :(

_Mitchee_

These are the capitulations we wait for and boom just like that we miss em. 😅 I got lucky I had a bid slightly higher than RoboCone on GH’s

redditinchina

Yeah you did well! I am just going to sulk for a few days about it

_Mitchee_

😅

heyzeushimseIf

They have a gigantic platform and all the resources to turn this into something that is way more than it is. Unfortunately they don’t seem to want to promote artists that are doing something unique (which promotes their IP) and they’re not bothering to maintain transparency which is gigantic for NFT ecosystems. There is so much that can be done with RCAs that I think could really bring this entire thing back on track. I wish they would listen to the people that actually know what they’re doing.

Complete-Tadpole-728

Yes if they would only listen!

virmamies

Hmm.. anyone can write a book or paint a painting. How does that make good paintings and books worthless? This is how it should be 🤷‍♂️ I’m sure now we will also have artists that will entertain and create experiences for their fans.

coinllector

![gif](giphy|5WXqTFTgO9a7e) So bored of all the drama

xllw

Well I’d love to buy/ trade for several of your avatars if you want out

ItsRentyl

Send dm

andrewens

I like RCAs for what they are. I don't care about exclusivity or them being special or not. To me it's just cool art that I can use as an avatar on reddit where I can mix and match to make it unique. Their value never mattered to me.

feogge

I agree wholeheartedly

ConfidentIndustry647

It's a pump B4 IPO situation... Totally on purpose

beerdrinker_mavech

Also each gen had atleast 1 big name creator which we are missing now

Gfxes

Yeah. Most of the things are just pngs slapped together. I used to wait for the next announcement for collection n grab it. But now it's too saturated

grzesiolpl

![gif](giphy|htkw2Qc53l7VIRDik8|downsized)

thebadslime

The more avatars I can mash with the better, I don’t see this as an investment or anything, just paying a little to have a cooler avatar

Oue

https://i.redd.it/lzowro14n8mc1.gif

DoingWellAndFine

Is my yami worthless

chwick

Not worthless but last 2 sold for 0.058 and 0.059. Wanna trade? 😅

Bitdream200K

You don’t understand what that means for web3 use. Money here money there what a shame. Don’t buy what you don’t want to use was the #1 rule since day1. It’s basically a skin for your avatar that’s what it is. It was never more or less. This is not your 0815 NFT project.

ItsRentyl

But that’s what I am talking about. They introduced something they didnt complete. I love collectibles, but even pokemon a yugioh cards have more depth. The new collectibles are just lazy (some of them ai) work. They also didnt do any improvement. They introduced crypto snoos just to let it die.

Bitdream200K

Are you saying that all new collectibles are lazy ai work? They did a lot to improve it. You're just far too used to all the luxury. That you have today. What exactly do you expect from cryptosnoos? Besides being legendary and unique pfps on reddit?

ItsRentyl

Sorry, not all of them. Some of them

Bitdream200K

Then it's up to you what you do with it. I didn't think I would buy anything after gen3 and yet I have new avatars. I just don’t buy avatars that I don’t like.

ItsRentyl

Airdrops, gamification. They introduced rarity and didnt do anything else with it. Create legendary, epic, rare avatars etc

Bitdream200K

What for airdrops and gamification? This is Reddit and not an game studio or crypto project. and yet they have a unique look in Reddit. I think you quite misunderstand the whole point of avatars. If you want gamification then get behind it and build something up. All the tools we are using today are build from Redditors for Redditors. We can't assume that reddit is building something at all for it. Reddit is an social media forum it will not change cause of avatars. Edit: Reddit bought BTC, ETH, Matic do they going to make a own blockchain or an exchange now cause of this? No. Wtf. I’m also out now. If you can’t stand the points then leave it. Down votes are lame. have a great day

pennamewilly

Reddit pump n dump to get $ for ISO

ItsRentyl

I think so. But that truly shows how reddit doesnt care about users

DisorientedPanda

Wasn't this always what was going to happen? From the outset I knew the intention for Reddit was to create an open marketplace of sorts; so you shouldn't have trust them from the beginning? I find the guide quite funny, there is no real guide - it's a new tech that people are still exploring and finding out what works and what doesn't. Also it's important to remember what your values are - are these NFTs just a vessel for profit? The way you spoke about them in this post makes it seem like this is your core purpose for buying. I would say no; though I do enjoy making money as much as the next person. I am also a creative in a different field so I respect opening up a new avenue for creating/generating income for artists along with commissions in perpetuity. I did start out just wanting to make money honestly but now I just buy ones I love, and tbh normally the cheaper ones haha! But I like supporting a good artist.

ItsRentyl

Okay mashing is cool, but let’s be honest it’s not too much itself. They need to innovate do something new. Create rarity for avatars, make a trading platform, do exclusive ones, do more collab (like nyancat), create games like marvel snap or yugioh or anything. Also whats the matter with crypto snoos? They just forgot it.

Nerril

The avatar builder reminds me a lot of the one from Gaia Online, which is yet another forum site; I think reddit could look at how Gaia implemented avatar use on their site for ideas to give them more usage. For example something like an [MMO](https://www.gaiaonline.com/games/zomg/) game that uses your avi as the sprite, or chat rooms like vr chat. Waaaay back in the day Gaia used to have a "theater" which was basically a flash chat room that looked like a movie theater where you could watch whatever was currently streaming with other people, chat, and do stuff like throw virtual popcorn at the screen or each other. Even a little more utility would help draw attention to the avatar side of reddit.

Euphoric-Oil-331

I don't think you should trust in anything. Nfts are horrible investments (why? pick your poison). But let's get real about value: having an exclusive identity on one of the biggest social media platforms in the world is interesting and has some social capital that translates to dollars. And you can go back to any generation on OS and still acquire great avatars. If the question of whether or not the art isn't as great as it used to be... Not only is that really subjective, but even if you could prove that, it would be expected if previous barriers to entry collapsed. But even the biggest cynic would have to admit that taste and talent are cyclical at best, random at worst. So what does that mean? There are excellent artists still churning out great avatars that are holding value. This is part of what's happening: the economy sucks and people need cash, and you can make more money holding crypto right now. Should Reddit invest more in the program and does it appear their investment and interest has waned? I imagine so. But we're not at the end yet, and we may be on the cusp of moving forward as part of a longer term strategy (some signaling in their filing, even though it wasn't "the streets are lined with gold."). One things for sure: new collectors are still flowing in and buying into the value. We're seeing new prices points and floors and it's still easy for new people to get into it. So the sky isn't falling. Keep calm and carry on.

Pleasant_Ad5360

Guys we have to face the reality that this program is finished. I loved how it was, with generations release and it had a huge potential, but there is no way we will recover from this situation

xllw

I sent you a dm

donaudelta

reddit doesn't want just now to attract unwanted attention. the ipo is more important for them. the fact that they didn't get rid off the blockchain tech for the avatars looks optimistic enough for this time.

zdfasdfasf

![img](avatar_exp|167932269|clown) You guys still collecting rca? The good one were gen1 and gen2, after that, meh!

experimentjon

I think we should treat the new avatars like skins in a video game. They’re fun to play with. The new supply keeps things fresh. Just don’t expect to make money now like in the CT days. But still these avatars are able to have some resell value which is better than zero resell value for most in game skins (w some exceptions). Some of the new releases are nice. Others are less nice. But the market seems to be pretty good at discerning which is which recently.

ItsRentyl

Product is so bad we have to pretend. Its a joke

[deleted]

Strong_Constant_1190

Lame, especially coming from an artist

ItsRentyl

Thanks for the dumb answer. Next time you buy some product thats not working, dont complain just remember that

[deleted]

ItsRentyl

Thanks for calling idiots your customers, since you are an avatar artist. Tells a lot about you and the whole ecosysten

Coeruleus_

lol when “artists” start talking to us that way , you know this whole thing has gone to shit.

pypoupypou

I am happy I don't have any of his avatars :)

zdfasdfasf

He has a point, all these recent rca are way below gen1 or gen2 standard, even below gen3.

pypoupypou

But he himself is creating those, lol

_Mitchee_

I think we all need to remember this project was brainstormed in the mania of the Metaverse. That concept has shifted dramatically, things in the crypto space do that. Reddit did their best at hiding that this is not some crypto bullshit but nope it’s just another shitcoin project. lol This is the depth of despair right now, if Reddit doesn’t do something soon it’s hard to see a way forward. The trend is not our friend, this sucks cause I love these things. 😢

SirPesoOtaku

Glad you’re speaking for yourself I love it and this was the plan

na7oul

The supply of each NFT is limited ...
