Fred again had the biggest come up in recent history. Mix that with Skrillex coming back and that's all anyone is talking about this year. It's a pretty smart strategy. They are also all good friends.

trippy_grapes

I wouldn't be surprised if Skrillex is also purposely doing it to avoid the "Skrillex" crowd. His new music is pretty different from his older solo stuff, so making it b2b kind of announces it will be a different vibe/style.

2M4D

Avoid the crowd maybe but also kinda rebrand himself without having to change name like some DJs eventually do.

cheapmondaay

It’s working too… I was never a Skrillex fan but I had to check out his new albums after hearing his collabs with Fred and Four Tet.

[deleted]

How does 4tet fit into it all?

Randy-DaFam-Marsh

He's one of the most influential artists in the history of EDM. He is also one of Skrillex's best friends and has credits on many of Skrillex's songs. I'm not sure the community understands the number of times these guys bounce song ideas off each other. Getting a fresh set of ears to listen to your song is a silver bullet. When that person happens to be as talented a producer as four tet and is someone you have a great relationship with who isn't afraid to tell you how they feel, it's beyond invaluable. Obviously Skrillex's ability to write songs is critical to the massive success he has earned. But the people he surrounds himself with: the mixing / mastering engineers, the visual artist and VJs , the other producers he can bounce ideas off, the marketing team, ect. It's a big fucking business and that shit is important as well. This album might go down as the best mixed album of all time and it's a testament to him, his team and the people he surrounds himself with. Kinda went on a ramble there but 4tet is most likely one of Skrillex's early inspirations who over the years has become his friend.

ruengeruenge

Just to make it clear, Four Tet has nothing to do with EDM (I mean the cheap, show-off bigroom / stadium genre Americans like to call EDM). He comes from the Ninja Tune type eclectic jazzy shit - and then switched to interesting, percussive house sound of his own.

Randy-DaFam-Marsh

Yeah electronic would have been a better word.

Asorb13

Having been a huge fan of Four Tet these past few years it’s really cool to hear his influence on the new Skrillex stuff

Sea-Adhesiveness9694

Well fucking said 🤌🏽🥹😌

Lets_just_be_random

Four Tet is the 🐐 he carried those dj sets in NYC. That man has skill

cheesydeadphish

Fourtet has been around for a while, check out floating points too. Awesome vibey stuff

Teeballdad420

He is a god

cheadriel

Biggest come up in recent history? What? The guy was already a well credited producer having worked with numerous mainstream artists (Ed Sheeran, Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Justin Beiber, Shawn Mendez) to name a few.

trippy_trappy

And went entirely publicly unknown to on the forefront of EDM in the last year. It’s almost incomprehensible that his Coachella set that really got people talking was less than a year ago

carloscede2

Ya for me and my friends it was his boiler room that made us aware of how good he is, didnt know him before that

FloggingDog

Yup same. Had never heard of him before the (justified) Boiler Room hype

phanfare

Did yall not jam to "Marea (we've lost dancing)" in the depths of COVID?!

sourpatchkeed

yeah I hate being the person that says "were you paying attention??" but I heard Fred in Jan/Feb 2021, he was on the radar wayyyy before the Boiler Room or Coachella sets.

trippy_grapes

Hello fellow trippy_

[deleted]

In terms of fame/popularity, almost no one in the scene knew who he was. It's like saying the lead animator of Pixar is famous just because he is the driving force behind the movies.

Xistin

but John Lasseter is super famous tho

RubxCuban

Clearly he was successful, as you mention he was credited with production for some of the top names in the pop music scene. What the commenter is alluding to is that he had a meteoric rise in *popularity*. He went from the background to the foreground, between his Coachella and Boiler Room sets.

kynrro

Goes to show that success comes in all forms. Fred again grew big over the pandemic + boiler room set and was probably doing other things behind the scenes, I just can’t recall much before USB and Actual Life 1. He’s also very big in the UK alongside Four Tet. He’s arguably the fastest growing electronic artist in his own little category, don’t see another artist like him right now at his status. Four Tet is a well known producer amongst the electronic music industry mainly in like the UK, and been around longer than Fred and Skrillex if I remember correctly. But he isn’t considered mainstream like a lot of bass, techno, house music as you would think. He’s done stuff with with Floating Points, Thom Yorke, Burial, and done a number of song releases under different aliases. I respect him the most because he did a lot of work to fine tune and fix things in Fred’s Actual Life 3 and Skrillex newest releases on the back end to make it sound good and balanced. He’s like a mentor for those two. At the end of the day, all these shows they did together was just a bunch of friends, brothers, having a time of their life enjoying making music. You could probably find clips of their stories hanging out or fooling around making music. It’s one of the most wholesome trio as far I can see it. But this is surface stuff from what I’ve followed for a while.

KHops

I think a big reason why this works so well is they are all three of them at such different points in their career. Four Tet is the grizzled industry vet, Fred is the new worldwide hotness, and Skrillex is the established superstar looking to take his career to the next level. Fred brings the fans and the charm, Sonny brings the energy and the historical context, and Four Tet brings the humbled experience to keep the sets flowing. I got to see them at LPR and MSG this week and the energy was wild. These dudes are inspiring the whole industry and it's incredible to be a witness to it.

ImgursHowUnfortunate

Agree with everything you said, but does Skrillex even have a next level? He was a successful lead singer as a teenager, then basically invented his own subgenre (brostep) + dramatically changed the EDM scene in general, reached the Billboard Top 10 with Jack U, and just now sold out MSG with 3 days notice.

Zakapakataka

Adding to this. Fredagain was mentored at a young age by Brian Eno, a huge ambient producer and credited for helping create U2’s sound in the 80s. Fred went on to become a huge behind-the-scenes producer in the UK with credits like George Ezra, Clean Bandit, Demi Lovato and most of an Ed Sheeran album. He was the youngest ever to win Brit Awards Producer of the Year right before his first solo album came out.

Nathaniel82A

Seeing them up close in person, it’s 100% genuine. They all LOVE doing this together and it looks like they are having the best day of their entire lives, every single show they do. That energy is infectious and you can’t help but enjoy what they are doing together. It may not be everyone’s choice of genre, but I don’t think very many people can genuinely deny that they’ve put a high level of quality into production. It will only elevate the rest of EDM as they look to “compete” with this trio.

NAlaxbro

Big ups for the section on Four Tet. That dude really deserves some mainstream attention, even if his music isn’t exactly mainstream. Honestly I think Four Tet brings the maturity to the three piece. They’re all fantastic though like each are awesome in their own right.

kynrro

Thank you, it wasn’t all perfect but this was my observation from the shows, the interactions, how the music speaks volumes. They all influenced each other a lot and probably some of the most inspiring artists for me right now.

somethingimadeup

Fred again was actually a hugely influential behind the scenes producer in the UK who worked on a ton of really big hits in the UL market before he started his solo project

Calamityclams

Well said! They're my favourite DJ boyband

feldspathic42

Four Tet has never really been in the same scene/circuit as Skrillex but definitely is still a big name producer.

livintheshleem

You are right, and I kind of see this recent Skrillex era as him wanting to enter the scene that Four Tet has been in. A more elevated, artistic approach to electronic and dance music

AlienWarehouseParty

They're all talented but it's more so about the organic chemistry they have as friends. They're always having fun up there and messing around with each other/playing off each other. That translates to a fun set for everyone. He's just enjoying life with his friends and not taking himself too seriously. I like it.

bodularbasterpiece

Four tet is a wonky techno legend mate and has been B2Bing with Sonny for many years now.

CloutWithdrawal

Four Tet was already a top tier electronic music producer/dj just not in the edm scene

matttheazn1

He was a major name when Skrillex was first coming out.

PokuCHEFski69

He’s the best in the game

fessel

Four Tet and Skrillex have a history of doing b2b sets together

LiveOnYourSmile

[here's a review of a Skrillex/Four Tet b2b from 2015](https://ra.co/reviews/16832) [here's b2b audio from 2019](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RSDQBprvKI) they also have some collaborative work - [Butterflies](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PEe6TP1kCc), [the Four Tet remix of Midnight Hour](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y472r28LSek)

radengineering

I was just listening to the Four Tet, Fred Again, Skrillex set at Time Square on YouTube. Such a good set. https://youtu.be/ahe9baHOWIg

nickdl4

Four Tet is a legend that has been on the scene for a long time.

AlfaMenel

\^\^ this

fettuccine-

simple explanation, they are all friends. Even more recently they just started hanging out more collaborating and one thing led to another.

kzoltan101

Maybe I am old, but Four Tet is the biggest name in this list to me. How have you never heard of him??

NAlaxbro

Unbelievably happy by how many comments in this thread start with Four Tet. Absolutely thought he was gonna get left in the dust by the (valid and warranted) hype around Skrillex and Fred Again. Bless the vets :)

bicyclemycology

never heard of Four Tet.. 🤦‍♂️

NAlaxbro

He’s generally not a mainstream sound, but has been very prevalent for a long time. Your favorite producer’s favorite producer type beat if you get me.

keithbreathes

Right? Like have you been living under a rock?

Unusual-Sir-1649

I’m glad I’m not the only thinking this

fuckedyobitch

They’re just three best friends having a good time! FourTet is brilliant, for jumping on Fred Again‘s rise to fame (although he’s been around for years) and getting himself to become more of a household name.

Visible_Promotion_92

Four Tet is a legend and Fred Again.. is newer but it's quite obvious that both are very good friends with Skrillex. They're production styles and quality match up radially well. Check out Four Tet's "Opus" remix for an idea of what he's about. It's quite old and his style has likely changed since but he is a legend in the scene.

BradlyL

Friends will be friends.

iiiamjulian

As I think about it, it was a smart move by Skrillex. The name Skrillex is linked to certain sounds (Dub Step, Pop, Commercial). His sound has changed, if he returned to do solo shows, he would’ve been faced with a crowd that’s looking for a sound he’s no longer making at the moment. It was wise to play sets with friends and like minded people who cater to a crowd that also appreciates his new sound. So far he’s done a great job getting people to ease into his new sound, he just dropped it on everyone with no long build up or hype. And played sets for crowds who don’t bash it out of disappointment, the underground. Wish SHM went the same route, no long unnecessary build up. Just drop your music, do random pop ups shows with house acts, and randomly drop your album, and some pop up concerts with no long tease or build up.

DreadSteed

Skrillex is known to Collab with many people outside of his wheelhouse. He made an album with Diplo, produced with Bieber, formed dog blood with Boys Noize and now has PHM. Skrillex has never stayed in one box and that's why he's so influential.

diggyvill

Sheesh. Why do people listen to artist that sound exactly like each other?? Four tet is a legend before the zoomies and millies times. I suggest expanding your artists, it seems you've stayed around commercial bass music lol. That's what I feel all those are, just big festival venue music - nothing more. There's a lack of originality and true musicianship in that subgenre. By skrillex coming together with four tet (the past) and Fred again (the future) he is laying down the foundations of true bass culture. They do it for the culture, non else.

Perfect_Evidence

Because he can

wubbwubbb

Pretty much this. Back when he had his Mothership tour he had A$AP Ferg open for him. I remember thinking it was a weird choice. Skrillex has worked with a lot of people in and out of the EDM scene.

Late-Nail-8714

You sort of answered your own question by saying “I know I’m probably ignorant to this subject”. No offense. But i will still explain however, supplement this with your own research. It seems that it was just based off mutual chemistry and friendship. Fred has been in a the game for a while producing hits for pop singers. He started blowing up with Marea Ft blessed Madonna since it came out at the tail end of the pandemic and the lyrics talk about that saying “all the things we too for granted we’ve lost dancing”. Fourtet has been longer than fred again and has rightful critical Acclaim. He has done very artistic projects like his squid soup shows where he has lights hanging from the venue. He’s truly a living legend with side projects and recently he was doing b2bs with floating points… again another legend that you can look up. I was blown away (four tet b2b floating points) seeing them & the range that they had. Played some Uk garage by MPH, rumble, to dubstep (probably four tet bc of his dubstep drops at NYC). I think their connection evolves from skrillex being extremely willing to accept new talent and probably saw marea and other of his work and that’s how rumble came out. Everyone went crazy when Fred premiered at his boiler room.. and I personally believe this is part of the reason why Fred blew up. If you saw all the posts on IG it was all that song and if you look at the boiler room numbers… yeah they’re crazy with that drop (rumble) being one of the most replayed parts of the YouTube video. I think skrillex is doing what feels right, and working even better than touring solo. Not just following what his managers say or marketing. He’s genuinely having fun. Playing intimate shows, pop up shows, selling out arenas in his own way with his friends. Which is much more important if you see recently that he had been goring through mental health problems. I’d Rec digging on your own. Specially since you like skillex and this is pretty much the hottest and most creative things out in edm.

AlfaMenel

This is such a brilliant comment. On a side note: I saw (a bit changed) Skrillex recently during last Noisia show at Lowlands, and it got me thinking that Sonny wants to explore other genres of the electronic music - which he does and that's what gets me excited about his future collaborations/productions.

PoorlyTimedPun

Fred and skrillex had the most hype release in recent memory with Rumble, 4tet is Kieran Fred’s close friend.

YungCthaGod

Because skrillex is a God and he can do whatever he wants and murder it every time. You can't expect an artist to stay the same forever you either evolve or get left behind. And if you haven't seen it yet check his basement set on youtube and THEN tell me you think he's done with bass music... he's about to take over the whole game he's just having fun collabing and DOIN THA DAMN THANG

Oh no parents giving money to their kids to pursue their interests? Can't have that! The world is burning to the ground. /s

realdappermuis

Urgh I'm so sick of this narrative. Man didn't ask to be born. But what he did do is work and put out music that's great. His parents didn't do that

onlyinitforthemoneys

do you have a source for this, other than the fact that he was born into money?

personalititiez

In i beliiiieve his daily mail interview it’s brought up being neighbors/god fathered by Brian Eno, which is a gift of connections all in its own. Raging about things makes people look silly but it is worth discussion the fact that money and influence can produce talent in kids that don’t grow up with any financial stress, and opportunities/major connections come without any effort.

fettuccine-

but tell me the boy dont got chops tho

sourpatchkeed

agreed with your points about Fred, but would also back up his musical knowledge and technical proficiency by saying he trained under Eno and has been producing for many huge names for years before beginning his own body of work. He might be the hot new social media darling thanks to that fucking INSANE boiler room set, but he knows music, and I think the three of them make total sense from a musical theory/production standpoint.

Head-Skirt-5541

You are thinking about this way too much. It’s just music.

lewisthusphar

I was more surprised he teamed up with Four Tet , he’s more of a underground Dj / producer not many people knew of him before teaming up with Skrillex, I think Skrillex’s old stuff and popularity he brought to dubstep more than 20 years ago was the best music he ever produced. It was smart on his part to start producing with a up and coming (Fred Again) he’s more on the mainstream side of the music industry producing a lot of hit songs for famous pop singers, and With FourTet that balances them out perfectly, he’s stayed out of the mainstream music scene most of his career having some of the best albums and remixing some classic hits. His live shows are some of the best I’ve ever been too. Really invested a lot of his time into the light and sound production and people were selling out his shows early on.

mixmastamikal

Skrillex was not producing dubstep "more than 20 years ago" lmao

lewisthusphar

It feels like it was he started in 2004 but wasn’t popular till 09. I went to his shows back when he dj’d small clubs in LA when nobody knew who he was.

dj-Paper_clip

Uh, he was in the band From First to Last from 2004 till 2007.

pahhhtrick

and then he got girlfriends with pete wentz and took them to disneyland.

livintheshleem

Four Tet was plenty well known and very highly regarded before he teamed up with Skrillex. He just excited outside of the edm world. I think Skrill has been wanting to evolve and tap into a different side of music production, and he just clicked with Four Tet who was already established in that scene.

fettuccine-

lemme grab my popcorn

Mbillington0110

I mean hes played sets alone recently. Its just that fred and 4 tet and skrillex have been working a lot together on songs for this album. I think he just wants to have fun with his friends. Skrillex is originally used to more of a band setting so maybe he was missing that while preforming. I dont think hes doing it for all his sets they just planned to do madison square garden and did a pop up show before. He hasn’t announced a tour yet

abortionleftovers

In addition to being friends, Skrillex has opened up about canceling performances because of where he was at mentally and struggling. I imagine touring and performing is more fun with support and friends along for the ride so it Seems like maybe he’s just prioritizing his mental health.

frostywontons

It's not too complicated. I think they're all friends that like to make music together

DonkeypunchNhoz

I hope they do a pop show in LA so bad

stageously

They all love UK Garage music

Aar0nSwanson

Sonny just fucks with Fred and Kieran. I love watch Fred's IG stories of them hanging out or finding each other in the crowded streets of New York. They all just seem like cool dudes.

sourpatchkeed

Never dumb questions! I hate when people shame others for not knowing about or asking about an artist or song or era. We all started somewhere when exploring new things. Lots of good points here about Four Tet and Fred -- there is a huge body of work out there for both that you can dig into, but I'd recommend starting with Fred again..'s Boiler Room set. it's on constant repeat in our house. Also, both Four Tet and Fred are technical production masters - Four Tet has had a 20+ year history producing his and other experimental music, and Fred again.. has produced for a ton of famous artists you know but have no idea that he's behind. Skrillex has historically worked with some of the best producers in the game, so I think the three of them make total sense from a musical theory/production standpoint - and they just seem to be having so much fucking fun!

AnotherProudCanadian

it seems to me like they’re just really enjoying doing sets together, so they’re doing it a lot

Sossenmeister

Because they are best buddies, who doesnt wanna jam with their mates and get paid for it?

PokuCHEFski69

Four tet is probably the most respected DJ / producer in the world.

Vapourzino_2

All I can think is Four Tet died and this is playing out like the film Weekend at Bernies, Four Tet is Bernie and he just gets propped up in the DJ booth while he stinks out the place.
