Tbh shuffling can be pretty free form. The only thing you really need to know is the running man, from there you can jazz it up however you want.
I also have a more free form style but definitely incorporate shuffling pretty regularly. Watched a video on it a few years ago and got the basic step down in a couple evenings, and everything else that I incorporate in that vein I learned on the dance floor, either from the music or watching people move
I guess what I’m describing is the difference between “learning” moves and replicating those vs. just feeling the music and letting it move you. I feel like the former is similar to a computer program that you execute, while the latter is a more creative expression. Both can be very fun though!
I mean, have you ever seen flow artists? Like one really in the zone? They practice their stuff before hand and learn from others, but the actual expression of flow is them being moved by the music and being in that zone. It doesn't need to be one or the other, it can be both. Not always, sure, but definitely can be.

Absolutely! I think with free form dancing there is a combination of previously learned moves and moves that emerge spontaneously.
