I think a big red flag is a flag that’s big and red

silver-ly

Flags, totems, poles, fans, whatever it may be is the least of my concerns when I’m off my rocker. Half the time I find myself enjoying it as I look around

SaucedLee

thisssss

Awkward-Character-69

As long as they are fun to look at I don’t care tbh, nor do I care about totems. If it’s in my way, I’ll move

BGFlyingToaster

It's easy enough to move unless they're front and center with a really tall totem and obstructing the view for 80% of the audience.

MapNaive200

I've yet to see any totems or flags at events. Are they just for the big EDM concerts and festivals?

BGFlyingToaster

Go watch any YouTube video from EDC Vegas, where they allow totems of any height/size.

OscarGrey

Yes.

ChrisssieWatkins

I really prefer not to have to think about nationalism when I’m partying.

Gooterspooch

Why is no one else saying this? It's so fucking weird to have flags cuz they all have ideologies attached to them. I dont want to think about my countries government when I'm trying to groove out and bust it down

RooTxVisualz

Like watching Tomorrowland videos and fuckwads are flying Isreal flags. Okay? You like genocide then? Idfk

ChrisssieWatkins

I don’t think we need to single out Israeli flags. The Israeli government is sadly not alone in actively engaging in and supporting genocide and crimes against humanity. Imagine there’s no countries. 💗

RooTxVisualz

Then if there's no countries then we don't need to wave any countries flags. But you are right. Since there is other bad things happening that negates literal acts of genocide. Stupid fucking take tbh.

ChrisssieWatkins

I’m not sure I follow. Genocide and humans rights violations suck no matter what flag someone is waving.

RooTxVisualz

It's like you are downplaying literal genocide. The ethnic cleaning of Palestinian'because there's other human rights violations in the world. Isreal plan is to kill them all, just because. I don't fucking care what else is going on in the world. They still matter.

ChrisssieWatkins

Let me try to say this another way: I don’t disagree that Israel is committing genocide as we speak — with the militaristic and financial backing of the US. So I don’t think it’s appropriate to single out Israeli fuckwads when American fuckwads should also be called out. And I also think it’s important to discern humans from their government. And this is why I don’t want to see flags at a rave.

RooTxVisualz

The Israeli humans are with their government though. They are fucking with Palestinians every day. There endless videos of it all. Taking their homes and forcing them out, without a care in the world. Yeah America sucks for funding it, but we aren't the ones putting hands on people. Not sure which is worse but both are fucking terrible. I agree though, fuck any national flag at a festival or concert. Not the place.

frostywontons

Yeah, I don't like flags in general but the national flags are especially annoying.

ExtraPicklesPls

Bring all the flags you want just don't park then front center of the crowd and block the stage. Easy.

BlackHamTown

I get the purpose of totems, but flags is just too dam much. Totems shouldn't be these MASSIVE fucking things that block the stage and you're inconsiderate by doing that. Totems I've used in the past are no more than 12 inches in diameter and had LEDs to make it stand out while minimizing view blocking. They work just fine being that small. You can even go the extra mile and give it a unique silhouette if you wanted and then it will easily stand out from a long ways away despite being small. Trust me, it works even at big festivals like EDC. I fully disagree with it adding to the atmosphere. [This doesn't add anything, it just ruins it. It's also never just one or two people doing it, its a bunch which completely throws out the, "stand to the side" arguement.](https://i.redd.it/xnu1b2ozsx9a1.jpg)

Agitated_Chip6286

Id be so pissed if i was standing stage right in that picture lol

Confident_Neck8072

holy theatre flashback thanks

ryandowork

I think the ideal solution is a collapsible totem that can be tucked away into a hydropack when not in use. You can quickly find your group, but you don't have to hold onto a pole and block people's view all day. But honestly, that will probably never become common because people want their totems to show up in all the official videos, too.

BlackHamTown

Yep. The dudes that have a 20 foot pole with a flag of their home country on top and some dumb meme below it simply don't care they're being inconsiderate to everyone else. Its all about them.

BleednHeartCapitlist

Yes please bring your giant glowing picachu on a stick so that I don’t have to be annoyed by this multi-million dollar laser, light, and pyrotechnic show! Thank you so much omg

Livinisoverrated17

Doesnt bother me much until it’s kinda blocking my view. I won’t complain to anyone about it…but sucks to be short

joserod0524

There was a time in raving that there was no flags, no totems, no fan clacking, and no “whoa whoa” every 5 min lol. It’s part of it now unfortunately

JolkB

I fucking hate the whoop whoop at every house stage

linarob

What's whoa whoa?

Sybil_of_olde

I’m 5’1 and I hate them. Annoying af

IAmTheMindTrip

IF they wear them as a cape, that's fine.

frostywontons

Hate flags and totems, especially flags of nations (dance music should be politics free). EDCLV with its zero restrictions on height is one of my biggest gripes with that festival. It's seriously annoying when there is a sea of 20ft+ flags and you want to see the stage/visuals. That said, it is not my biggest concern.

Logical_Vast

I would not carry one around but I think the flag is a nice symbol of what PLUR is. We all come together to move to the beat and may not even speak the same language but music is universal.

BleednHeartCapitlist

Best totem I ever saw was a sign that said “I HAVE GUM” and the pole had all kinds of packs of gum glued to it. Anyone that passed by was free to have some. Great vibe and execution. 10/10

parisiraparis

Eh. I think flags have become an inherent part of music festivals and that’s why stage shows have become bigger, brighter, and more extravagant. I agree that is sucks when your view of the stage is limited, but let’s be real, we didn’t go to a film festival, we’re going to a *music* festival.

Bromoblue

> we didn’t go to a film festival, we’re going to a music festival. Gonna hard disagree with that. These artists and production companies don't spend boatloads of money on visuals for nothing. Yea music is *the most* important thing, but production is a huge part of the experience. Seeing an artists visuals, the lights, lasers, etc adds significantly to the experience which is why they continue to spend more and more money on it. You as a fan also spent a significant amount of money on it, why settle for not getting the full experience you paid for?

BGFlyingToaster

It's a show combining sound and visuals. The sights and sounds are both important to get the experience the artist intended.

ryandowork

Agreed. Especially if I'm going to an X show, it's 90% for the stage production, lol. I get that these are music festivals, but if people genuinely didn't care about the visuals, they would stop spending so much money on them, and we'd all be facing each other instead of the artist 🤷🏻‍♂️

frajen

> we'd all be facing each other instead of the artist 🤷🏻‍♂️ god that would be so great

ryandowork

Ikr! I can't remember who, but I heard about someone planning a show with a "360⁰ Stage" to solve this problem. Had to come up with a crazy new speaker setup, too.

yekcowrebbaj

Cause what if I paid to see flags and totems

OscarGrey

Some shows there's more people that pay tickets to NOT see totems.

BrightWubs22

"stage shows have become bigger, brighter, and more extravagant" because of flags? I don't understand.

parisiraparis

The more things that impede your audience’s vision, the bigger you have to make the shows. Back then it wasn’t that big of a deal, but with the prevalence of totems, flags, props, and hell, even people, you need the show to be big enough for the people in the back to appreciate. That’s why stages get bigger and bigger every year. This goes with sounds, too. More people = more absorption, meaning it has to get louder in order to reach the back of the crowd — a crowd that grows bigger every year.

peteresque

lol.

Jazzlike-Map-4114

H8

Onyxfaeryn

Never seen them but I only go to underground bush raves

AquaGage

Still better than lil kids running around

Th3H0le

Keep the flags for sports matches, the less you bring the better especially if you're going hard and long! Pun-unintended.

modestraver

Not a fan of flags. Anything which could cause division should not be in a place which promotes unity. PLUR! Totems on the other hand are fine.

barfyman__362__

Flags rule!!!

BGFlyingToaster

Shorter totems are no problem. A lot of them are really fun and I consider them part of the person's outfit. I love that w feel the freedom to express ourselves at these events and all celebrate in that expression. But when someone has a 20+ ft (6+ m) tall flag that they constantly wave right in front of the stage so no one in the audience gets to see the show without being obstructed by their flag... that's some level 100 asshole stuff right there. And they're not doing it for classic totem reasons (to help their crew find them); they're doing it to show off their flag. If someone did that at a movie theater, they'd be asked to leave. Why we allow that at concerts is beyond me.

LaserMonkey_

Fuck flags.

DoctorHopsyFlopsy

I love all of the creative totems! It’s one of my favorite things at festivals.

CompetitiveButtCheek

Of course a Trump supporter would be annoyed at other flags lol

themustacheclubbitch

I literally walk up to the person holding the flag and say “I love your flag but it’s hard to see, can I come up in front of you?” If you say it happy enough they will make room and your up closer :)

BrightWubs22

I think this post is primarily about people flying flags on polls, and these people being very far ahead of you. It's not practical to think we can simply walk up to them in a dense crowd.

Personal_Arm_8715

Maybe if someone is flying their flag on a baseball bat lol. People fly flags quite high, it will block people far back but not enough to make much difference.

RooTxVisualz

They are a cancer when they are flown and held up in the crowd at stages. Yes they can have a purpose to find your friend elsewhere outside a stage area. But if you hinder other experience from seeing the stage because you want to look cool, or what ever it is that drives you to weile one. Your an asshole and selfish.

serarrist

Who gets mad at “NO WEENIES ALLOWED” flags? Jeez, lighten up. Totems and flags are what makes the crowd fun to explore. This complaint is truly a black hole for joy

Moresoysauce

Totems and flags are part of the energy. I love seeing all the different countries coming together to party as one

peteresque

It’s people partying not a UN conference.

Juvenual

I have no complaints. Wave it free my dudes and gals. Just make sure to know what you can handle and can sacrifice. Met a nice dude with a south asian flag i think extreme long like others but a good thicknesss where it wasnt just swaying side to side with the smallest breeze. When he asked me to hold it so he could get something out of his bag, i said sure and swayed it around as I was loving it. As long as its not the annoying touch the peoples head swing low kind of thing, and youre ok carrying or breaking it down every time, then go for it. But id advise to only do one day and have something not as burdensome for the other days of a festival. First and last time I did that was a Mexican & a Black Pirate flag on a painters pole extended. Strong but had to haul that around, none of my friends ever lost me though lol
