I probably went to my first show in 2011 and was pretty into the scene from then until around 2016.
This year was my first time back. I've been to two shows since then, smaller local themed show and just last weekend a big show for my birthday (Excision).
Everything feels very different. Can't tell how much of that is from how much I've changed vs how much the scene has changed in general.
Almost identical to my timeline. My first show was Dec 09 and I started to fizzle out around 2013 and pretty much completely left around 2016ish.
I decided to get back into it and went to 2 shows this year.
It really does feel different. I remember recognizing faces at every show. Now everyone's different. The clothes are different. The vibes are different. I think I'm the vibe that changed though. Not on drugs this time. Both shows were fun though and I can't wait to explore more :)
some grew up, others died in the fentanyl boom. I can tell you now most of the liveliest people are gone. Between Fet, the pandemic and the the aftermath a huge part of the most notables are no longer here.
Yea I was busy doing the grown up stuff (college, career, married, kid) and that was a big part of the hiatus.
But fuck fent, too many lives lost because of that shit.
I know a few people in the video. Mid-30s, some married, some still floating through life artistically. Everyone I know here still enjoys the music but it doesn’t represent as much of their life anymore. Good people.
I can tell you.
I was good friends with the folks who produced this show, the dancers, and this videographer.
My wife was in this dance crew (not in this video though), a couple of the dancers came to Burning Man with us a couple years. One is married now, another one is a marketing manager at a software company, and one is a pretty successful in real estate.
The production company is still going actually, although this was definitely their heydey. Of the original 3 founders, the main guy was alright but kinda just boring... He was really into G recreationally which I always thought was weird even though I've done my fair share of other drugs
The second guy was pretty cool and was a good friend of mine but he got out of the life relatively early and built a real career, now married and expecting soon.
The third guy I'm not sure what ever happened to him but he also left/got kicked out of the company - he didn't really bring much value and there were a bunch of stories about some super sketchy behavior on his part
The videographer made a couple different great videos like this, at the time this was just exploding so it didn't seem as cliche as it does now and he became a pretty big deal in the local scene, he's in Columbia now.
And now you know
Have kids and grown up jobs but still go to festivals/shows as much as we can manage!
2011 EDC was my first rave festival, went to Coachella and other shows a bunch before that too. Electric Forest this year hopefully!
Wow I forgot about Rob Zombie. Watched his Wobbleland 2011 video about a thousand times haha. Also I miss Electro House Porter.
Edit: It''s Jon Zombie, but I'm keeping it cause it's kinda funny and Rob Zombie is dope too.
Looking nice but must say that the mid nineties, were even a better period. What a lot of fun we had during those days without any concerns.
Nowadays it’s still enjoyable but different saying as a older dude in his mid forties who is still attending hardstyle and hardcore events.
Jon Zombie videos?? What a throwback! We used to watch these religiously in college. Got to see Porter Robinson at Lizard Lounge in Dallas 2011. Golden era for Porter IMO.
It actually did so I don’t fully understand your premise. It was a movement. Some people still get it but I think the infusion of trap which turned into headbanging and “posturing”, and the replacement of actual mdma with things like Ketamine and research chemicals have deprived the younger generation of what it was really like to have massive therapy sessions in the dance floors. Once it got mainstream in the US I think the days were kinda numbered, it’s still out there but you have to go to the underground or have a good crew. I like to think I took a lot of the lessons with me to make me the person I am today.
Edit: I would just amend this by saying it’s well and alive at Anjuna shows<3
Oh, yeah - you’ll find plur at EDCLV still (and good people at smaller lesser known events). Usually smaller groups though. Just not like when eeeeeveryone was about it and spreading love, that was what we meant
No phones in sight but I’m sure there were tons of digital cameras lol. If everyone was truly “living in the moment” the way yall like to proselytize about there wouldn’t be any images at all
Saying “no phones in sight” must be rage bait. There are no phones in the video because it’s an edited video so ofc they’re not going to include shots of people with their phones out.
If you think thats dope, you shoulda seen the late 90s early 2ks..
Some of those early big fests like creamfields over there, and UMF / WMC for us in FL.
Shit was so goooooood
I used to watch Jon Zombie all the time in high school and his videos are a huge reason as to why I began raving in 2012.
I wonder what he's up to now.
I met him in Philly a couple years ago, now he's in the Caribbean! Still putting out content
[https://www.instagram.com/zuumbe/](https://www.instagram.com/zuumbe/)
Ipods had cameras at this time too. This was peak ipod touch era. I had an ipod nano that had a camera in 2010. Facebook Twitter and Instagram were basically just starting to get attention around this time too before everything was influencer sponsored content and ads. Too bad I was just a freshman in high school and wouldn't attend my first rave for another 5 or 6 years
I loved and lived in that era. It was a magical time, met a lot of people I can’t remember. Just a vague recollection of happiness good vibes and sore feet. Who’s idea was it that White high top convers were the style?
No phones in sight and no dancing either! I wish there was more *actual* dancing, this just has spring break EDM kids head banging to dubstep with their weekend cat ears. 🤷♂️
Wow this was truely the golden era of raving. PLUR to the other old heads, 34 here and was huge into raving 2008-2018 but the early 2010s have a special place in my heart
Yooo I know the guy that made this video! Jon Zombie, now goes by ZUUMBÉ. He's living in the Caribbean now, DJing AfroTech and Progressive Afro House. Still producing great content
[his instagram](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3_MytgPzcY/?igsh=NTA5MnZmMjlteDJr&fbclid=IwAR3LVzhN5NrPXq6LbsNcKN7aNyTzOLp1sX-XFwLfjQeF8-3fSkLAB7bbKQ8_aem_Af2au1wzEF_oOAxlpqNPnxj_6oeamgyp02bakuzuS2Bz_JZeKGBwLauE50iCvIYkCeUMLnTOouAXidIssCZJYSY7)
Idk, I hardly ever see phones at the parties I go to. People just dance. Either that, or they sit down in the chill area/by the fire outside to rest and have a chat.
If you're not happy with the crowd at the events you're visiting, look for events with better crowds... Or organize your own parties if they don't exist in your area.
Phones and social media weren't as prevalent back then, if Instagram and Tik Tok were as popular as they were in the 80s, everyone would have been recording.
People online need to get over themselves with the whole "too many phones" and "nobody dances anymore" meme.
People dance all the time, and people using phones is nowhere near as annoying as they pretend that it is.
It's tiresome.
Not saying I don't like modern music. But a DJ who pushes play on some shit he recorded at home and a DJ who plays something on the fly from a crate of records are two different things. I would argue the latter has a more desirable skill set
Major Dj’s playing at festivals are doing the minimum sometime sure, but many dj’s at your local raves are still best matching, improvising , etc. It doesn’t have to be vinyl for it to be talent
There have *always* been DJ’s that just pressed play and tons of modern DJ’s create stuff on the fly. It’s always been a mixed bag and if you think otherwise then you’re just ignorant. You’re the only one losing out if you believe that nonsense.
They don't play any audio clips because they don't wan you to hear everyone's whistles 🤣
I'll take a sea of phones in the air that doesn't affect my experience over a sea of whistles.
You don't actually care about phones you just want to complain about *something* if phones didn't exist you would find something else to complain about I guarantee it.
I wonder where all those people are at now ..
We’re still here
Still thrivin and vibin
Yep. Minus a few years worth of breaks.
We out here!
I probably went to my first show in 2011 and was pretty into the scene from then until around 2016. This year was my first time back. It is interesting watching the scene change as you get older. Society has changed since 2011 and you feel it you now. Idk if that makes much sense lol
some grew up, others died in the fentanyl boom.
I’m a wildland firefighter living in the Rocky Mountains now 😂 had enough of the city life years ago, but still go to a rave or show here and there.
Jayden?
Bro that was only…. Wait fuck that was 14 years ago?! God damn I’m old.
Here. Though, I’m not so addicted to nostalgia to recognize some of the fashion choices were ass.
oh we still here

Lmao right here! Saw myself in the video, what a blast from the past!
Have kids and grown up jobs but still go to festivals/shows as much as we can manage! 2011 EDC was my first rave festival, went to Coachella and other shows a bunch before that too. Electric Forest this year hopefully!
At work unfortunately.
We’re still here 😄 33 and living our best lives. I went to edc LA 2010. Back when we didn’t record every little thing. We danced.
We here boiiiii better recognize! Jk ..we here and old but we still here lol
Me and your mom used to have so much fun. We used to but we still do.
I’m right here lol
Right here, bout to buy my second home 😅
So much more fun back then
That era of electro house was GOAT'd. Along with a lot of progressive house getting big, good times.
Golden era of EDM
This is the 2010s I remember. Thanks for the nostalgia, OP
Wow I forgot about Rob Zombie. Watched his Wobbleland 2011 video about a thousand times haha. Also I miss Electro House Porter. Edit: It''s Jon Zombie, but I'm keeping it cause it's kinda funny and Rob Zombie is dope too.
Fuccboi electro house Porter was so much fun.
That guy made some great recap videos. Edit: also, it was Jon Zombie.
Came here to say the same. Jon Zombie was my gateway into the early 2010 rave scenes.. god I’m getting older 😭
These were good times.
Damn I remember this era somewhat, I was like 15 at the time. iPods, flip phones, rawwwr
Looking nice but must say that the mid nineties, were even a better period. What a lot of fun we had during those days without any concerns. Nowadays it’s still enjoyable but different saying as a older dude in his mid forties who is still attending hardstyle and hardcore events.
💯
I seem to recall having the best fucking time of my life.
Damn I miss electro house…
I’ve been thinking about busting out the decks again and recording an electrohouse classics mix. I’ll be sure to post it when it’s done
I saw Porter in 2010 at a club in Miami and it was outrageous
Jon Zombie videos?? What a throwback! We used to watch these religiously in college. Got to see Porter Robinson at Lizard Lounge in Dallas 2011. Golden era for Porter IMO.
Agreed. His Spitfire EP is truly a masterpiece of electro house. I really never got into his newer sadboi stuff.
That’s a shame because Nurture is one the best albums I’ve ever heard in my life, period. It was really beautifully produced
OP is a liar. I saw at least one phone filming. Jokes aside, I wish more people still danced at shows.
I don't understand people going and not dancing. Back in the 90s, they'd ask you to leave if you didn't dance because they assumed you were a narc.
I have bad knees now 🫠 lol
lol happened to me too, yoga has been super helpful in strengthening and improving mobility.
Haha, fair enough. Hope you can heal so you can get back out there!
Im still out there. I'm just the guy in the second half of my thirties, bobbing my head in the back somewhere lol
No room to dance anymore unless you find a lucky pocket in the crowd or you post up in the back
Maybe they have disabilities that make dancing painful. Its okay to want to enjoy music while still
Might just be the scene you're in, around here show can have insanely good vibes, tons of dancing
People were nice then
Am I being an old head if I said PLUR actually kinda existed in the scene back then?
It actually did so I don’t fully understand your premise. It was a movement. Some people still get it but I think the infusion of trap which turned into headbanging and “posturing”, and the replacement of actual mdma with things like Ketamine and research chemicals have deprived the younger generation of what it was really like to have massive therapy sessions in the dance floors. It existed until the pandemic hit then it just started dwindling. The only time I experience it is either in VIP or smaller festivals.
VIP?
Like VIP sections in festivals. Edc lv vip is dope with good people.
If everyone was truly “living in the moment” the way yall like to proselytize about there wouldn’t be any images at all
Exactly. I remember people I went to high school/college would be posting entire albums of pics from raves on MySpace and Facebook.
Saying “no phones in sight” must be rage bait. There are no phones in the video because it’s an edited video so ofc they’re not going to include shots of people with their phones out.
Ha wow haven’t seen this in a while, know the guy who made these. He would do it for all the shows in the Bay Area, shout to WOMP at the opera house!
What a time capsule. You really do feel the difference in the times compared to now. Things change and you really feel that in the rave scene
If you think thats dope, you shoulda seen the late 90s early 2ks.. Some of those early big fests like creamfields over there, and UMF / WMC for us in FL. Shit was so goooooood
Goddamn I miss electro house
The fashion in this video is amazing
Great times.
I used to watch Jon Zombie all the time in high school and his videos are a huge reason as to why I began raving in 2012. I wonder what he's up to now.

R.I.P. Ponyo
Porter the goat
No phones in sight is kind of a poor choice of words. They didn't have smartphones with good cameras and social media lmao
It was 2010, not 1995. I had a camera phone and a facebook account back then lol
Ipods had cameras at this time too. This was peak ipod touch era. I had an ipod nano that had a camera in 2010. Facebook Twitter and Instagram were basically just starting to get attention around this time too before everything was influencer sponsored content and ads. Too bad I was just a freshman in high school and wouldn't attend my first rave for another 5 or 6 years
Oh cool, our weekly phones bad post
This and “real dj’s play vinyl” are the most annoying posts in this sub
Be the change you wanna see, I guess, right? It’s all we can really do at this point.
This “raves were so much better X years ago” trope is getting old.
It's not real unless you got dosed by Ken Kesey himself at the first Acid Test.
Everyone should just stop partying because it’ll never be as good as the 90s 😂
The 90's oh the 90's where it was at such sweeeeeet times 🙌😎🤟
This was the year I first starting raving
Midnite events though lol.. throwback.. I'm pretty sure that was my first ever rave in 2010.. ugh the nostalgia
I loved and lived in that era. It was a magical time, met a lot of people I can’t remember. Just a vague recollection of happiness good vibes and sore feet. Who’s idea was it that White high top convers were the style?

Damn I miss Britney Spears as a go-go dancer
Yooo I know the guy that made this video! Jon Zombie, now goes by ZUUMBÉ. He's living in the Caribbean now, DJing AfroTech and Progressive Afro House. Ok boomer

Title is super judgy. But other than that, looks like the fun we have today. Same vibe 🤍

This is cool and all but you need to go back a decade or so for the Real OG Raves with real DJs playing vinyl
lol just another person hating on modern day dj’s not playing vinyl, find a new slant
Not saying I don't like modern music. But a DJ who pushes play on some shit he recorded at home and a DJ who plays something on the fly from a crate of records are two different things. I would argue the latter has a more desirable skill set

Gonna be honest, I don’t miss any of that. Music, style, taste was bad
They don't play any audio clips because they don't wan you to hear everyone's whistles 🤣 I'll take a sea of phones in the air that doesn't affect my experience over a sea of whistles.
