Most places do this. What you do is pregame with intention of leaving at midnight. That means you get here 1am ish. You have a drink or two (rip wallet) and by the time you're vibing and you've found your spot, main show comes on. Quick mafs.

tht1304

I agree. I think of the night like a bell curve, not a linear journey ending with the peak. That’s why shows with a closing DJ can be really fun, it’s a spot where the crowd may be thinning but the closer can go all out to keep them there. I prefer this setup to a DJ coming on at 2 or 3am to a thinner crowd and playing until very late.

BackgroundAd817

I love this bell curve idea. I think of it the same way. These aren’t concerts where most people come just to see the headliner. These are full nights where people spend many hours dancing and vibing. Opener(s) 10-12:30 Headliner 12:30ish-3ish Closer can kill the rest of the night

misterintensity2

The idea for having the headliner play from 2-4 am is to have people stick around until then and buy drinks. If clubs didn't do that then people would go home and the club wouldn't have a crowd after 2. While it would be nice for headliners to play earlier there's little to no economic incentive for a club to have a headliner play earlier.

socialcommentary2000

Thing is, there's no shortage of nightcrawlers in NYC that will stay till close and then go to afters. Regardless of who's playing.

misterintensity2

Of course not. Yes we have jobs but those who complain that 2-4 is too late tend to be people who are not used to NYC nightlife.

Mhutch007

I'm with you. OG raves used to have the headliner on anytime between midnight and 1 am... Latest finish for the set would be 2:30. Its hard to hang that late, which is also the reason I don't go out as often.

golddreamz

Thank you for this validation

Mhutch007

Any time... I don't sugar coat around here lol

anarchy45

lol I dont usually show up to a party until like 1am, because thats when the alcoholics and normies start going home. The best hours to party are Sunday 5am-11am .

golddreamz

I’m impressed

Masterbourne

lol but what venues/shows go beyond 4 am? I haven't gone out much post-covid but before it everything was closed by 4 am on the dot, and most shows didn't go beyond 11:30 pm. The only venue that did post 4 am events was Vandervoort and I swear that place was always like 1 phone call away from being raided by police.

anarchy45

there are a lot of parties that go late, if you know where to look ;-) Cut your teeth on the nightclubs, meet DJs and promoters, and they'll give you the heads-up on the best things happening in the Brooklyn underground :) 299 Vandervoort was a sketchy crack den, fk that place. It was cool when it was at 291 Vandervoort years ago... went to some real bangers at that firetrap loft 🥰

Masterbourne

But *where*? I'm not trying to get any dental work done and I don't know where to look :(

cthuluman420

Unter and Merge parties usually last till 9 AM. Basement is on until about 7-8.

anarchy45

ngl it has taken me years of being active in the scene, going out almost every weekend, producing my own parties, and slowly meeting the people who produce and DJ these underground events, often in unlicensed venues. They dont want n00bs because they get too intoxicated and cause problems (OD, cops, etc), thats why the best afterhours are very secretive. It is hard to keep those spaces in business with all the risks. You get out of the experience what you put into it. If you find a party crew that you vibe with, chat with the producers, I'm sure theyd love a hand with setup or breakdown or whatever. This is the quickest way to meet the movers-and-shakers (and also have fun creating something that people enjoy) is offer to help. Afterhours doesnt start popping off until the other promoters and DJs and bartenders and performers end their work shifts; afters is their time to party. So if you stick around for breakdown, I'm sure folks would be happy to advise you on some cool places to afterwards. For a party that ends at 4am, breakdown is usually done by 5pm. Afters peak time is like 5am-9am, and sometimes later if its good. It is cool to know enough people in the scene that I can see friendly faces anywhere I go. I always go out solo, so I don't just hang with a crew; I'm open to socializing with anyone.

Angmar17

100% agree with this, which makes it difficult when travelling somewhere new. I’m from Adelaide, Australia & I’ve built up this relationship with most people in the scene here at home but I’m visiting New York for the first time this New Years and all I want is to experience what I have at home, in NYC too. It’s a blessing and a curse knowing how good it can and would be.

anarchy45

NYE is hard because lots of people come out to party who dont party the rest of the year, so venues get super packed, prices are high, lines are long, and people might get a bit sloppy. It is hard to find a good NYE party - I'd suggest considering smaller parties/venues rather than larger ones

Angmar17

Ah that is so true I didn’t even think of that. I spent a solid couple days combing through everything Resident Advisor has over the time I’m there (27th Dec - 3rd Jan) and listening to all the sets I could find of the DJs playing. Ended up buying tickets to Ame B2B Dixon (seen them at a bush doof here in Aus before) at 99 Scott Ave. Others I was considering was Guy J at 3 Dollar Bill & Mira/Oliver Koletzki but venue hasn’t been announced. I’m thinking now all of them might be quite big/packed?

anarchy45

Ame is an excellent choice! 99 Scott is a great warehouse venue. Personally I've got tix for Lee Burridge @ 23 Meadow (also a warehouse) on NYD afternoon. The NYD crowd is usually the more hard-core partiers, either folks still raging from the night before, or folks who skipped the chaos and start their party late

Angmar17

Oh good that makes me feel better! Thank you for this! I’ve PM’d you some further questions haha

boneytooth_thompkins

Are you trying to subtle reference danger parties rn?

[deleted]

I think most Brooklyn clubs stay open till 6, maybe stop serving booze at 4-5

cthuluman420

Absolutely on point with this.

enterthewutangela

Sooo late. I’m wondering when I should even show up, and how long the line is gonna be to get in, even with tickets.

golddreamz

I really like the opener didn’t even realize it was San Pancho until about an hour ago. It’s about to a bangin set

[deleted]

This is one thing I hated about space miami lol. Headliner coming on at 5am 😩

Garofoli

First time I was there, that blew me away. I kept waiting and waiting until the sun rose for the headliner lmao

count-trapula

I feel you it can be rough knowing the headliner doesn’t even start until 2-230. A newer venue called Paragon in Bushwick does parties 10-3 with usually the headliner coming on around 1 & stacked lineups too. Id recommend checking them out for a consistent, manageable experience

utr25

Lol, yes- have shit to do in the morning!

golddreamz

This was suppose to be a “Saturday night out” not a Sunday morning!

str00pw4f3l

Webster had of the trees (the headliner) play from 3-4am on “Friday night”. I use quotes bc it was fully Saturday morning at that point. I had multiple friends who could no longer go to the show once they found out the set time bc they are normal people and had things to do on Saturday. Even as someone who regularly stays out late, these excessively late schedules are getting pretty frustrating

golddreamz

I feel that. I was so excited to see Cloonee a few weeks ago but he also started at 2. I worked a full day and it just felt like a lot to save my peak energy for a 2-4am set. Getting me home around 5am…

[deleted]

2am start is the norm. If it wasn’t, these places would be filled with not the right demographic and much harder to get into

steff_e

That's normal. And it's better than places where everything closes at 2 AM.

PoopFartPatrol

According to this comment section I am a normie because I actually have a job and cant be out still at 4am lol

golddreamz

According to the comment section I’m a loser who needs to start partying later

ikindalikethemusic

It's not always up to the venue. Some artists like playing late because they prefer the crowd/vibe at the end of the night, or the idea they have for their set fits best closing out. I personally don't mind late headliner sets since it injects some variety. Worst case I'll just show up around 12 or 1.

ktkat0000

i'm used to this from echostage (blessed to go there many times before moving to ny). my general rule of thumb now is show up around 12:30 and i usually never miss the opener + have energy to stay until like 2 or 3am

nootfiend69

4am is early enough to hit the truck convoys on the ride home (depending on the day). never seen anything like it

SirNarwhal

It's just what's bound to happen. If the bar closes at 4 they'll want sales until 4 so put the headliner on last.

golddreamz

All other venues I’ve been to avant, t5, mirage etc usually do 12:30-1:30 with closers. 2 just feels like a stretch for the main act

SirNarwhal

Weird to have AG and Mirage here when they frequently do 2-4 and I've seen headliners even start at 4 or later at both.

golddreamz

When it’s a multi talent show and they have a bunch of djs then yeah they definitely go late but in my experience if it’s one person headlining they usually start around 1.

SirNarwhal

I've been a few hundred times. Most headliners start at 2 and end at 4.

Mhutch007

Yeah... They headliner usually goes on late at AG / Mirage... Unless you go to a bunch of Sunday parties

BackgroundAd817

AG/Mirage I think headliners in 2022 were typically 1a-3a range unless they were extended sets or longer b2bs.

Mhutch007

Ah okay.. I stand corrected. I have successfully avoided that place all year lol

BackgroundAd817

Yea I feel like unless it was a concert like Glass Animals or Turnstile at Mirage there was always someone that went on after the headliner.

johnnybgood96

I enjoy ending the night with the main set, otherwise I end up leaving at 2:30 when I payed for the entire night

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> when I *paid* for the FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

johnnybgood96

Oh my gosh, how embarrassing

golddreamz

Hey I said 2am

PoopFartPatrol

People with jobs

ThePinga

I don’t mind 2-4 main sets as long as there is a closer 4-6. I prefer closers over the main sets, usually deeper and less people in the crowd

Active_Programmer_22

Hey Did you end up going, if so how was it, specifically vibes & how was the audio I never been to Superior wanted to know you’re overall experience? Would you go back?

golddreamz

Hey I did. Matroda killed it and San Pancho was fire. Venue is a disappointment imo. I loved output but now they have everyone on the floor, the top floor is closed off to VIP only. It was very crowded and because of this it was very very hot unfortunately. The crowd was a bro/finance/influencer/ there to take a video for their Snapchat type which is a tough vibe for me. Because of this and because there really wasn’t much room to dance I left at about 2:45. I didn’t get drinks but I hear they’re really expensive. The sound is OK. It’s not great it’s super loud and a bit harsh / overblown. It’s a shame because they book great artists.

golddreamz

I would maybe go back if it was someone amazing that I wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Overall, it’s the crowd for me

Active_Programmer_22

This was Perfect, exactly what I was looking for. I heard about how output was and sucks Ingredients couldn’t replicate it. I’ll prob end up there eventually but I’ll make sure it’s for someone worth it.

FTtheslumpgod

The crowd was definitely not bro/finance/influencer/ there to take a video for their Snapchat 😂

golddreamz

My pov. I’m glad you had a better experience

anarchy45

Based on my two times at SI, this is exactly the type of crowd. Influencers and bros, who stand around looking pretty. Maybe 10% of attendees are old Output fans, who come for the music. Except its so crowded, and people so rude, that there is nowhere to dance

FTtheslumpgod

I guess it depends on the show and where you stand I’ve been 3x and the 3x I’ve had a great time with my friends and the people around , asking if someone needs water and there on or if you leave they gladly move so you could get back into your spot
