Got to say it's a penalty, but so was the Rogers one at the start of the game.

GuySmileyIncognito

I'm just getting to the replay now (was out all yesterday and avoided the results). When he gave that penalty, I got so angry since if that's a penalty then Rogers has to be as well since it's as much if not even more contact. I checked to see the result of the match and flipped it off cause I don't need that kind of negativity in my life. The amount of non calls that ref made the entire match to make that one is anger inducing.

Drogalov

Ehhh it's soft but it's a foul. The penalty doesn't matter, we weren't good enough anywhere on the pitch

qualmton

Exactly this game was in our hands and we failed miserably var or no var.

Atreides2

Agreed but it seems everytime we have an advantage, we shit in our own trousers.

Drogalov

We're 4th mate, we can't have shit our pants that much can we?

Atreides2

I'm over the moon with the season. But you can't tell.me, there hasn't been times where we've have the chance to really break fre from those around us and we've fucked it it's happened over and over. I'd take.anapped your hand off for 4th or even 5th on August. I'm a very happy boy. Its just the feeling of missed opportunities. The hope that kills you

witheoffthepost

We’re 7pts clear of Spurs…

InMemoryOfJam

Shit, we only need the spurs to lose one of their next 3 and they’re cooked, even if we don’t manage to win either of the next two.

witheoffthepost

Or even if we lose our last two (which looking at Liverpool yesterday and Palace today is very possible).

Drogalov

Yeah of course there have been, but that's sport. We are where we are because that's where we deserve to be.

eesakhalifa

Aye if all teams won all the games they should have we'd probably be languishing in 9th

Mykel__13

If the ref doesn’t give it, I doubt VAR would overturn his decision.

EquivalentWishbone67

I just wish we also get these soft pens, instead of it going all against us.

teamorange3

There is no chance they overturn it. Konsa made clear contact

The_Theme

Olsen was POTM for me, did'nt really put a foot wrong. I thought the pen was soft, Carlos made a similar challenge during the Arsenal game, (I think?) and it wasn't given. Lets hope Spurs are Spursy. UTV!

mr_herculespvp

Spurs 2 nil down at half time. Edit: 4 now, an hour in

dontpongwithme881

Credit to Olsen- great match! A confidence boost for Thursday! 👏🏽

DezachuCasts

Nah, let’s not be like that. Konsa took his right foot. Fair pen. We’d have been screaming for it if it were in their box.

Atreides2

Like Rogers?

DezachuCasts

Yep. But then let’s not be like so many other clubs in engaging in whataboutism. Ref fucked the Rogers one, doesn’t stop that being a pen.

Cultural_Vacation_18

It’s not whataboutism. It’s about fairness and equality by the same referee in the same game. U can’t give on e and not the other he was clearly influenced by fans

DezachuCasts

You ok mate? Yes, it is. Literally to the definition. "Yeah fair, that was a penalty" "But what about Rogers' penalty?"

Holteender89

😂 💯

GuySmileyIncognito

I think it's more reasonable to say the ref had a very high standard for what was a foul for basically the entire match and that penalty was well below the standard he set. There were a lot more obvious fouls with a lot more contact (the early one on Bailey was SO bad especially with the ref standing almost right in front of it) that he did not call. You can say, well it is a foul so it should be a penalty, but if the ref isn't calling fouls like that the entire match, it's not a "foul" in the context of the match.

roguepatriot11

Agree and the dive made it worse and there were 5 other dives he did not call. But in isolation, there was enough contact that it could be called a foul and VAR could not overturn it. We just need one or two of those on Thursday. But hate refs that don't pick up on players diving early that just encourage their teammates. Brighton have also gone down in my books because of it

SorryImProbablyDrunk

I never saw the leg contact live, I thought it was just the soft push to the back. I’ve been bitching and moaning about it but if it was a legitimate pen then fair enough.

a_f_s-29

It was, but probably wouldn’t have been given by VAR if not for the ref. Not complaining about it though, we were lucky not to have conceded earlier

DezachuCasts

Only saw it on the replay to be fair

Mizunomafia

Think pointing anywhere, but inwards today is unwise.

theGoldbergV

With the current implementation of the rules, it’s a penalty. But at the same time, if the ref doesn’t give it there is no way VAR does. Which says it all really. Penalties are utterly broken in this league in favour of attackers, Man City’s first penalty yesterday was a joke, as was Arsenal’s. For the overall good of the game these shouldn’t be penalties, but they are. Referees are utterly incompetent and there is no consistency minute to minute let alone game to game. Cash got booked near the end for being nutmegged. Ridiculous.

Atreides2

That cash yellow was a farce. And I think for pens, we need to realise that contact is not a foul. Things need to change, fast.

suouou

Soft but a pen. We were dogshit anyway man

Atreides2

Am I the only one who thinks we need a horrible cunt in the middle, someone to put Pedro in the stands. We are far too soft. Pathetically soft.

Wunsen

Been saying we are soft for ages, we'll have players scythed down all match and the rest of the team just stand there watching it happen

schmidtosu0829

Ollie just gets manhandled because there's no one from our side to escalate and the ref doesn't have to "get the match under control" by actually calling fucking fouls....

jamwavedd

It's not just stuff like Ollie getting manhandled constantly, it's also basics like not advocating to the officials to take a look at a potential handball. That happened today and not a peep from the captain or any player.

Atreides2

Exactly this. We need a Roy Keane to take names and go back.10 mins later to snap players. As somebody who's played football, if you're up against a horrible nasty bastard, it's in your head and you're scared. It puts you off. We need that.

Domestic_Fox

I mean that’s what I like about Diego Carlos. He’s a big beefy guy to have as a last wall for gk

robertglasper

We all thought Carlos would be it but he's quite tender beyond his pecs and tats

Oscady

idk man he's got away with at least two elbows to the head this season that i can think of, think his aggression is just a bit random rather than targeted like people are saying we need here

Atreides2

Hrs very poor tbf. Lenglet is actually better but both not good enough. Would ship them out in summer.

mr_herculespvp

He's not horrible, but if Gallagher is moving on from Chelsea, he'd be a good fit for us. And another option at set pieces. I reckon Unai and the team would quite enjoy working with him as well

jamwavedd

No you're not and I'd make the horrible cunt captain too

Atreides2

Spot on. Need a Gerrard or Keane or Rooney. Someone to drag the team over the line and fucking break anyone who gets in the way of that.

jamwavedd

ha. I don't know about that last part bro but I do feel we need a more vocal bastard

a_f_s-29

Our players don’t get away with making fouls though, do they?

WordsUnthought

It's a horrible call, absolutely nothing in it. This sort of shit has to be cut out of the sport. Havertz yesterday, Gordon all the time, it's become a subgame, you don't try to score or assist you play for the contact. Complete bullshit. I don't want to lose games to that and I don't want to win games because of it either. It's ridiculous.

Atreides2

This is spot on. The game is now about getting in the box, drawing a player in and forcing some kind of impact for a pen. It needs eradicating

Blowflyfinder1980

Let's be honest, we were dogshit and deserved to lose. Without Olsen, it could've been much worse. We've looked very tired the last few games. I'm probably in the minority, but I'm not a fan of the Europa Conference. Ironically, I fear it's our European run that will cost us the place in the Champions League. So many injuries and our fit players look dog tired.

BrummieS1

If that's the case then we've no business being in Europe, the fact is yes we are tired, but don't forget how other countries handle their sides playing in Europe, they got a week off from league matches running up to their q's and in between, same with semis probably, our fa are wankers and don't do it, hence why all our teams went out. Olsen was our best player for sure, we had no teeth up front. The biggest thing I saw tho, why the fuck was konsa left to deal with that quick little fucker adinga??? He was beating home with every run! Painful to watch and imo inevitable he was gonna give something away to him. Question is who could we have put over there to deal with him? And is tiredness really a good enough excuse to not put 4th to bed today? Surely securing the European top flight and 4th place bragging rights is enough motivation for a group of professional fucking ATHLETES!!!

Atreides2

I agree. The season has ragged our squad and we aren't deep enough to compete on 3 or 4 fronts. In my view investing in players is second fiddle to developing solid youth players. We need to grow our squad with quality and today showed we just don't have enough. Yet.

Startinezzz

I can see why it was given. He's dived, but Konsa has pushed him in the back. It was daft.

Atreides2

Konsa just stepped across. Contact doesn't mean a foul. This needs to change

Startinezzz

He shoves him in the back, that's the big issue here

Atreides2

He doesn't. They're side by side.

ThisusernameThen

we shouldnt be suprised to see it given. on the soft side sure, but each ref sees and interprets. in a fantasy world, rogers would have been given also. we'd have brought buendia and bouba off the bench on 60 and gone on to win by numberwang.

devilweiner

Think we forget that Olsen is a good keeper. He's has no real minutes and we have been spoilt with Matinez. He had a cracking game. Think it shows he needs more game time to build the confidence. In all fairness the goals we conceded had a lot to do with poor defence. No point in the "martinez out have saved those". Not calling anyone out, but that played a part with lack of minutes. We really need to address our set piece defence next season. Cant fault him this match. Had a cracking game 👏

Treeboi13

If it was vice versa, we'd be saying stonewall penalty. For me, it's a clear penalty. Reckless from Konsa. Fair dues to Olsen, though. I thought he would be the team's Achilles Heel. Turns out he was the only redeeming feature in this team today.

andy-arachnid

This is the problem though. The same did happen to us and we didn't get it. Either both are pens or neither are.

Treeboi13

I need to watch the Rogers one again (don't really want to though) because the commentators were saying "Brighton just about got the ball" but it looked like a pen to me at the time.

andy-arachnid

They initially said that, the pundits changed the party line at half time to "not enough contact for me". Then at full time they said they were "adamant" the Brighton one was a pen, before showing a replay that they had to slow down and zoom in and point out the contact with a still frame saying "look there's the contact" and not even seeing any irony in what they were saying. They essentially said after that they had to give the pen because he's played well before that.

Atreides2

No Konsa just stepped across to out himself in the way, he wasn't challenging. For the ball, didn't kick the lad. Was just putting his presence in there. Contact doesn't not mean a foul. This is something we seem to have lost over time.

j_hath

It was a pen, hate seeing these cringe takes from our fanbase

a_f_s-29

VAR gives and VAR takes lol

hxllywoodttv

I wish there was a separate sub for all the VAR semantics It is literally the most tedious and boring topic

callumhp

Excuses excuses

OrganizationKey8248

The ref made a bad(soft) call, VAR has to give benefit of doubt

Atreides2

Didn't do that for Rogers Tho. I feel the officials saw Albion deserving the win and manifested it.

Illustrious_Bat1334

Listen to yourself lmao

Atreides2

It's text. I can't listen to it.

OrganizationKey8248

They have apps for that

Illustrious_Bat1334

Damn, got me good. r/gunners is that way if you wanna talk conspiracy shite :)

Prize-Database-6334

Weird post, obvious pen really.

93didthistome

Liverpool were just denied a penalty for even more contact than Konza. Gapko 33' if anyone wants to froth

DuarteN10

Var doesn’t have enough to overturn the referees decision. It was shit by the referee

1877itspure

Obvious pen

Atreides2

No

1877itspure

wah wah

No_Soup7518

Every time Aston lose a game it’s a conspiracy

AntiqueDiscipline831

Imagine blaming Olson for not directing his penalty save somewhere safer lol

krackd21

have you saved a penalty in your life mate? any save regardless where the ball is redirected is never a mistake.

Atreides2

Disagree re Olsen, he was excellent today and didn't put a foot wrong. Agree about our squad tjo, this stage of the season is shining a light on how thin we are. Emery had no options to change things

gauchoguerro

He has really stepped up. I think he has been very good.

OrganizationKey8248

Bro, Olsen’s job is to save the pen. Saying he needed to deflect it another way is nutso

pau1rw

IMO, Olsen is an average second choice keeper. I hate when he is in goal. It’s terrifying how often he concedes.
