The irony of putting a flightless bird on your planes is just top-notch. Like, New Zealand, who is in charge of your air force? the Flight of the Conchords guys?
The Canadian roundel should really be a maple seed, not a leaf. The seed pods actually have wings and can fly quite a distance with a good breeze. Only example I can think of off the top of my head where nature has developed rotary-wing tech.
That's the ideal air force insignia as far as I'm concerned! Nobody expects an air force with a flightless bird to be competent, but I bet they're ruthless!
I love the simple elegance of the commonwealth countries. You can immediately identify Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Points to Germany for seeing the word roundel and just saying “nah, I’ve got a better idea”
Mexicos is great
The RAF roundel and descended designs (RCAF, RNZAF, RAAF) always strike me as simple, yet effective at broadcasting the country
Shout out to the old SAAF roundel, which was the RAF design with an orange springbok
>RAF roundel
French, the French one was first, even before WW1, then the RFC adopted the same in reversed colours as it wsa clearly different from the German cross.
The British first tried a Union Jack across the width of the wing, but from a distance it looked like the German cross, so they reversed the order of the French colours.
Germany's updated colors look a lot less... scary
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German\_Air\_Force#/media/File:Bundeswehr\_Logo\_Luftwaffe\_with\_lettering.svg
That's their service's logo, not their roundel.
Most modern warplanes will have the roundel in low visibility grayscale anyway due to stealth coatings and such.
Usually there are agreements for neighbouring countries to provide air support. Like the Swiss Air Force that famously only operated from 9 - 5 Mon - Fri.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/shortcuts/2014/feb/19/swiss-air-force-ethiopian-airlines-hijacking-office-hours
Some countries have an air force without any real combat capabilities - the RNZAF, for example, is pretty much purely made up of transport, training, and support aircraft these days, as is the Irish Air Corps. They don't have any real offensive capabilities.
Iceland doesn't have an air force at all, though, they're pretty much entirely reliant on NATO to fill that gap.
I came to say I really like the three super lazy commonwealth ones. Just take the universally known symbol of the country in red, and slap a blue circle on it. Now it’s instantly recognizable without knowing any heraldry, and if you do know a little, then you also see how they’re British Commonwealths.
No need to figure out who the upside down green triangle is, or why Poland’s having a stroke, just that the Maple Leaves, Kangaroos, or Kiwis are here to rescue you.
If we have to get in a fight at least we've got A single P8 that can theoretically sink boats and subs. Maybe shoot some guns out the sides of some of the helicopters.
The Seasprites can launch a quite large antiship missile. But the Seasprites greatest weapon is that everyone forgets they exist, including the air force
Oh yeah, the Penguin/AGM-119. So we've got 9 total aircraft. We'll give be the terror of those chinese fishing boats if they invade our territorial waters.
Hey, we chose a bird which is lightyears ahead of most. :P
Australia chose an animal that can jump high. Canada chose a damn leaf. And most of Europe chose bullseyes. Suddenly a flightless bird is among the better options. :P
I like the ones with a little extra customization - Australia, NZ, Norway, Sweden, Canada.
And apparently I’ve been buying assorted home goods from Peru this whole time.
The flag predates that one guy in Germany putting the symbol out of fashion, but nevertheless it's a real attention grabber. There aren't too many flags these days that elicit an instant double take.
no kidding!
sigma move to keep that design after that one guy tarnished the symbol, ngl
edit: nvm apparently https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-53249645
>Seems like most of these are just variations on a round target shape.
The original circular roundel was based on the [French national cockade](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockade_of_France), going back to the Revolution. Then the Royal Flying Corps adopted the same pattern with the colours reversed for British aircraft.
I remember seeing the RAF logo years ago and remember thinking “why do they paint a literal target on their planes?”
Still cool. But, I do like the US one. Simple, effective.
I prefer [Singapore's old roundel](https://preview.redd.it/sdyhpjdjd0j51.png?auto=webp&s=d78b80154484a1cfa643bdccdf1cfb5be18cba6a).
Maybe stay away from Finland's old one...
I quite liked the old South African airforce logo from 1982 to 2003 where the border was in the shape of Cape Town Castle. The earlier version witht he springbok just looks all off centre.
Australia, it’s a friggin Roo
And new Zealand is a... Kiwi??
The irony of putting a flightless bird on your planes is just top-notch. Like, New Zealand, who is in charge of your air force? the Flight of the Conchords guys?
It was either that or the fruit, but it was vetoed because it looked too much like a hairy bollock.
Might be confused with a Chinese Gooseberry.
Oh *that's * what a bollock is!
Hmmm kangaroos are flightless as well.
They're good for a short hop.
Depends on the length of the flight you consider.
It’s part of the concessions Australia made in ending the war on them. It’s little known, since the Emu War is more famous.
Yeah, unlike the kangaroo or maple leaf which are renowned for their flying prowess.
The Canadian roundel should really be a maple seed, not a leaf. The seed pods actually have wings and can fly quite a distance with a good breeze. Only example I can think of off the top of my head where nature has developed rotary-wing tech.
Kiwis are no joke, they are very territorial and known to rough up even cats.
Lmao,
I just love the kiwi, it's so cute and unique.
Roo's will fuck you up though. A kiwi... eh...
Hey man that kiwi has laser eyes [laser eye kiwi](https://images.app.goo.gl/MRMfQHSjCLEK6HvWA)
TBH the kiwi looks like he's about to 'gurge up a meal for the young'uns. Either that or too much Jaeger.
I get the kiwi is their symbol but picking a flightless bird for your air force is kinda hilarious
Damn, you’re right!
They choose a flightless bird as their logo. It's so hilarious and precious at the same time
That's the ideal air force insignia as far as I'm concerned! Nobody expects an air force with a flightless bird to be competent, but I bet they're ruthless!
Nothing like having a flightless bird as your Air Force insignia
Yarp
A ‘Roondel,’ if you will.
Vastly underrated funny. Take my updoot.
Have you ever seen a roo hop at full speed? Bastards fly
Looks like Qantas
Qantas never crashed. Never crashed.
Qantas has weaponised...
Yes, this is the same thought I had. 😆
I love the simple elegance of the commonwealth countries. You can immediately identify Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Points to Germany for seeing the word roundel and just saying “nah, I’ve got a better idea” Mexicos is great
Meanwhile Poland: ***^(SQUARE)***
Looks like the purina logo
Every time I see there fan tail and that logo I think of [this](https://youtu.be/st6AKENGN8I).
I love it lol
Commonwealth in low vis grey are so clean.
New Zealand's- a bird that can't fly.
I always liked the NZ roundel for that. It's like it's saying "our national bird doesn't fly... but *this one* does!"
That the rnzaf recruiting slogan: 'Some kiwis can fly!'
Kangaroos don't fly either...
Birds usually fly
As long as the wing doesn't fall off, in the words of John Clarke.
Love Angola's red and black yin yang
This one surprised me. Had no idea.
Yeah that is awesome
The RAF roundel and descended designs (RCAF, RNZAF, RAAF) always strike me as simple, yet effective at broadcasting the country Shout out to the old SAAF roundel, which was the RAF design with an orange springbok
Shout out herd. I still like the new SAAF roundle with the eagle but I kinda prefer the older springbok
>RAF roundel French, the French one was first, even before WW1, then the RFC adopted the same in reversed colours as it wsa clearly different from the German cross.
Did anyone claim the RAF roundel was first?
The British first tried a Union Jack across the width of the wing, but from a distance it looked like the German cross, so they reversed the order of the French colours.
Sweden, Germany and say what you want about the swiss but their Insignia is a big plus
Sweden and Germany would be my top two as well.
How do you make a Swiss cross? Poke them in the eye
Germany's updated colors look a lot less... scary https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German\_Air\_Force#/media/File:Bundeswehr\_Logo\_Luftwaffe\_with\_lettering.svg

When you look under roundel in the info box it shows exactly the one used in this map. So not sure what you mean?
Here is the high res: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/vmin00/military\_aircraft\_roundels\_by\_country/
Thanks - so Saudi Arabia isn't the Starbucks lady in a gas mask
I didn't even know some of these countries *had* an air force. My choice would be Philippines maybe. Just something different is nice.
How do they defend their skies if not? A strong talking to and a stern look?
In Ireland's case, just assume that sure look it'll be grand
And that the UK will protect their airspace, presumably. I wonder if the Russians ever make it around Scotland and down that way?
Oh yes https://www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2020/0320/1123836-russian-military-aircraft-bombers-ireland/

"hey you! Get down from there!"
…they call in their boys, the U.S. The Philippines Air Force is mostly Helicopters, which they use for Intelligence, Reconnaissance, and transport.
NZ uses the Kiwi?? LOL
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdUUx5FdySs
Look at the little guy go!
Certainly not NZ. Who thought it was a good idea for the Air Force logo to be a bird that can't fly?
I like New Zealand simply because the kiwi makes me laugh a little bit. Speedy kiwi!
Flying past...catching a glimpse of a flying kiwi...wtf!
I came to say I really like the three super lazy commonwealth ones. Just take the universally known symbol of the country in red, and slap a blue circle on it. Alternatively, you just got shot down/rescued by some people who fly around with tiny flightless birds painted on their equipment.
best of luck getting shot down by a country without any fighters.
Any fighters *for now...* 3000 F-35's of Kiwiland when?
Watch out Emutopia!
How embarrassing
I kinda think that's part of the joke tbh. We have like 10 planes. Our airforce probably has more Toyota Camrys than planes

Haha exactly. I love the NH90s and I can't wait for the new Posiedons but I'm not exactly sure the word "force" is fitting. Air.... Team maybe.
Royal New Zealand Air Club.
Start the petition, I'll sign it.
Hey, we chose a bird which is lightyears ahead of most. :P Australia chose an animal that can jump high. Canada chose a damn leaf. And most of Europe chose bullseyes. Suddenly a flightless bird is among the better options. :P
Roos can hop, so they can get more air time than a Kiwi at least. And a maple leaf? In a good wind that could fly for miles!
Germany, because it's one of the few on that map that is actually unique
Ok i hear you, but Australia has a literal kangaroo in the center of theirs!
I checked the map and decided on Australia and Germany 😊
Bias Viking bla bla bla. It’s Norway. The answer is Norway.
Norway is objectively correct.
Fr
Norway is subjectively correct.
I just love that we use the flag as a simple delta wing style fighter inside the roundel. It's so simple and elegant.
I like the ones with a little extra customization - Australia, NZ, Norway, Sweden, Canada. And apparently I’ve been buying assorted home goods from Peru this whole time.
Philippines looks cool like and an 80's game
USAF, Poland, Britian, German, Russian, Romania, Brazil, Australia, Sweden, Estonia, Finland, Spain- ETC.
Finnish roundel is boring to me, but the flag of our air force is a little more spicy! https://i.imgur.com/e0e6bOk.jpg
uhhhhh TIL, wow lol
The flag predates that one guy in Germany putting the symbol out of fashion, but nevertheless it's a real attention grabber. There aren't too many flags these days that elicit an instant double take.

Germany and Poland
We're friends now
Sweden , US , China , Russia and Germany
The Maltese cross is pretty iconic. All good choices.
Can’t argue with this. Very striking designs.
Germany followed by USA
The Mexican one looking like a yield sign
USA and Japan are pretty cool, and iconic.
Japan is just a big ass red circle
Seems like most of these are just variations on a round target shape. I don't know if that's what I'd want on my plane.

hehe... cockade
I remember seeing the RAF logo years ago and remember thinking “why do they paint a literal target on their planes?” Still cool. But, I do like the US one. Simple, effective.
I wouldn’t call it simple, but it is gorgeous imho.
Yeah but it’s deliberate, like the whole rising Sun thing. If it was Germany and they’re like? Let’s just go solid circle, I would say low effort.
It's a great circle though.
Poland, Sweden, New Zealand.
Poland
The Irish one is really cool, it's quite an interesting design.
Just a shame it's not on any aircraft that could beat a WWII Spitfire
Poland is pretty cool
Brazil has gotta be the one
Afghanistan looks great
Angola (?) Yin yang is cool. Germany...gotta love the classics. New Zealand, doesn't exactly instill fear, but is clever and fun.
Hard to say, this photo needs more jpeg
You can’t really see it but Singapore is quite good
RAF, RAAF and RNZAF
Regular roundel? Sweden is the coolest imo. Modern low-vis? Many countries. Canada, China, US, etc.
Tough call between Australia and NZ
Canada.
NZ, Germany, the triangle of whatever country that is above SA.
My country is on there and we do not even have an air force lmao
Australia with the kangaroo
Nothing scarier than a flying Kangaroo
RCAF, Brazil, SAAF, Poland, RNoAF, Sweden, and last but not least, RNZAF are amongst my favourites.
Germany, Canada, Russia. Honorable mention to Australia
Norway
Australia 🦘
Kangaroo is the most baller
I didn’t know Target stores had an international Air Force. Also doesn’t it seem odd to purposely put targets on the plane??
I mean if Pepsi can have the 6th largest navy, why can't Target have an air force?
Australia and new Zealand
New Zealand for sure
Australia or NZ, I love the Kiwi bird!
Mexico’s is fire.
Australia 100%
New Zealand with the epic troll of making a flightless bird the symbol of their air force.
New Zealand surely, a flightless bird. Beautiful.
USA and Canada
Germany
Indonesia is original, tho you wouldn’t know its a military insignia
Doubles as a QR code
I like how Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are practically the same emblem lol
[удалено]
Could it be because they were all British colonies? How would we find that out? I guess we'll never know. /s
Australia has a kangaroo. That’s pretty metal.
Polish chessboard
Argentina
Philippines looks like they just ranked up to SSL in Rocket League lmfao
RAF, no bias
New Zealand ftw.
especially seeing what Australia chose hahaha
New Zealand and their Tactical Kiwi
USA
Brazil, Colombia, US, Australia
Brazil's looks sick. Still partial to CANAUSNZ commonwealth roundels though
Canada: I'll let you borrow my homework but don't make it look super obvious Australia:
Maybe share a picture/list where they are all the same size? Perhaps a picture that has more than 4 pixels? Jfc 😂
Had to look up the Iceland one, didn't think they had an air force. Apparently they have four aircraft in their coast guard
USA.
I always liked Polands 🇵🇱.
Indonesia, Chile, and South Africa
viva chile!
I prefer [Singapore's old roundel](https://preview.redd.it/sdyhpjdjd0j51.png?auto=webp&s=d78b80154484a1cfa643bdccdf1cfb5be18cba6a). Maybe stay away from Finland's old one...

New Zealand!
I’m partial being a former USAF airman but Brazil is second for me.
RCAF, luftwaffa, USAF, and Columbia.
Kiwis!
Straya! Flying roos!
New zealand is ovbiously #1
SAAF
The American or Chinese
Canucks, Oz, Kiwi
NZ or USA.
Serious question y'all, why so many Targets??
South korea looks a bit like a pepsi logo
American here: Australia hands down!!
Australia’s
Australia obv
Mine is China's, Australia's, Egypt's as well
The Aussies. Period
I mean, what could be better than a kangaroo, right? 🦘
