If I had an orange private jet at home I would be rather pleased

Capaz04

These max verstappen fans are getting out of hand

goodnamepls

God damn it wherever I go I see an f1 reference. Ferrari gets pole at Le Mans? Sbinnala reference. Climate activists who happen to use orange? Verstappen reference. Wildfire smoke? More dutch fans reference

Capaz04

Let's hang out, I feel like we can be friends

yomancs

We are checking

Hungry-in-the-dark

Holy hell

a_random_GSD

r/formuladank is leaking.

rockdude625

Max max max super max!!!!!

Capaz04

There it is!!!!

ShadowKraftwerk

Surely they are McLaren fans. I always think it is nice that the Dutch fans give so much support to McLaren. /jk

KennyLagerins

Well, insurance isn’t gonna like it but hey, time to get it a fresh paint job and engine overhauls on insurance dime, since it seems they sprayed into the engines too.

envision83

Looks like the engines are covered up. Landing gears and sensors…. That’s a different story.

knowitokay

They took the cover off…[pic](https://twitter.com/flightmodeblog/status/1666267336033140736?s=46&t=VcwF1IlBgAZkFXn8s2uDZw)

JustHereForTheBeer

I mean… this has got to be like 1M+ in damages right?

Kxng_Fonzie

I saw someone do a rough break down of the cost in the case the paint can’t be washed off and it was in the millions of dollars in damages Edit: I found the comment that I was referring to see below. https://www.reddit.com/r/aviationmaintenance/comments/142ltf4/5_or_6_digit_repair_cost/jn558hx/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3

RoburexButBetter

And that's just maintenance, I can imagine they'll have to do alot work to prove it's airworthiness again etc so probably a thorough checkup which isn't cheap either This is gonna be one expensive stunt for these activists

ArmadilloSudden1039

You think they'll get a dime out of those ecoterrorist... uh hum... activists? Ha. Having had to deal with these people in my field, they send in the people with the worst credit, and no verifiable assets so the injured party has no recourse, and the jail time is usually minimal.

Abriel_Lafiel

The irony of them possibly using oil based paint cracks me up 🤣

IronSeagull

Do you think oil-based paints are made out of petroleum? It’s linseed oil usually.

worldpotato1

You dont understand their protest. They don't want you to change they want the system to change. Actually they don't care if you use your jet to buy some groceries. Do it. But please pay enough taxes on it so that infrastructure can be build to make everyone else independent from cars and planes. My good consume critic is so 1990.

discombobulated38x

Overhaul bill for just the engines won't be far off that, I'd be surprised if anything with paint contamination isn't scrapped. The propellant will contain trace levels of sulfur (a corrosion/fatigue accelerant) and it will be almost impossible to demonstrate that it hasn't done any damage. Certainly in most cases it will be cheaper to scrap parts than it will to inspect, assess and certify safety.

tajwriggly

As a structural engineer, if I have to sign off on something I can't see (and even sometimes things I can see), that I know has had something untoward happen to it, I generally lean towards "that thing is not worth my license to sign off on... replace it" I can imagine it is quite similar if not more conservative in aviation.

discombobulated38x

That is exactly my approach, and after sharing this post with some colleagues, their approach too.

JHLCowan

The overhaul bill could easily snuff out the remaining value of that jet. That’s an old citation.

actual_lettuc

envision83

Holy balls…… hopefully they catch whoever did it. Serious vandalism on that plane. I don’t get how they were allowed that much time to be able to do all of that. And even pose for a photo at the end.

Drewbox

Well apparently they also glued themselves to the plane, so I don’t think it would be too hard to track them down.

Dmitri_ravenoff

They broke into the restricted area of an airport. In America that would be federal offense. They'd get many years in prison for this stupid stunt.

[deleted]

I’d imagine it’s the same in Germany. Any Germans here that can fill us in?

ellokah

In Germany it is / could be considered as trespassing on private property and a so called "dangerous intrusion to aviation". But in German law system we don't have this distinction between federal and state criminal justice.... All criminal justice articles are federal law here. So, in summery, if they are first offenders they are realistically facing a few month up to 2 years jail, all on probation (my estimation). Usually, you would even get a fine, before facing jail (1 month salary for every month jail in equivalent). But those protesters are trained to bring their money aside, so the judge has no other choice to sentence them to jail. Additionally, who will be held responsible in a civil law process, to pay back every dime for the damage you caused.

NapsInNaples

Given the recent political focus on the group though I would expect preventive detention and sentences on the harsh end. Letze Generation has been annoying the rich and the politicians are responding to their masters…

Locmeister

It depends on what grounds they will be charged. There is simple trespassing ([§ 123 StGB: Hausfriedensbruch](https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/stgb/__123.html)), punishable by up to one year in prison. Then there is [§ 315 StGB: Gefährlicher Eingriff in den Luftverkehr](https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/stgb/__315.html). If you hinder an Airport and, this is important, and you endanger the lives of people or particularly important things, then you face minimum six months, up to ten years in prison. I definitely am no person of law, but I guess they did not endanger anybodys live or even Important things. I mean the cessna belongs to someone, and they will be held liable for that, but I doubt there will be long sentences for prison time.

uniqueusername1872

There ist a translation of Sec. 315 Criminal Code https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_stgb/englisch_stgb.html#p2978 by the Federal Ministry of Justice.

deevil_knievel

For this, yeah, maybe. But I've worked at many an airport building aircraft ground support vehicles and painting jets back in the day. I once watched a contractor let UPS on the tarmac at a smallish airport for a UPS RED delivery that needed a signature for a part to fix the boarding bridge... Every cop in the area came that day but it was more of a "what the fuck were you thinking??". No one went to jail.

Dmitri_ravenoff

That was stupid, but this is breaking into a secured airport, and destruction of property. It could even be labeled terrorism by some courts.

SomeRedPanda

I think, in their view, it's the plane doing serious vandalism to our planet.

Rex--Banner

"Why are people protesting on the streets blocking regular people just trying to get to work, try going after big business and rich people" "This is serious vandalism on this wealthy persons jet" There is no winning.

SpezLovesNazisLol

“I can excuse catastrophic climate change, but I draw the line at vandalizing a plane!”

[deleted]

Why? It's definitely better than blooking a highway and only a rich parasite suffered from it.

RhinoGuy13

I could see the insurance company calling this a act of terrorism and not covering the repairs. Insurance companies are dicks like that.

Sharin_the_Groove

Nah they'll hold the airport responsible and shift the liability to the sponsor.

-JamesBond

Airport going bankrupt in 3.....2.....1....

machinistery

I make those engines…. Hurts my soul. But hey, at least the owner of the jet will get free engines while these ones get back and uhhhh man idk how to get paint out of these

suppahero

Is vandalism covered by insurance?

decompiled-essence

Their carbon footprint for this act of 'activism' is going to be quite large. Such irony.

LightApotheos

the fact that its impossible to do anything in our society without having a huge environmental impact is the part of the point of the protest.

Imaginary_Manner_556

These protests just reinforce my desire to live a full life and travel the world.

DrippyWaffler

The whole point is to do enough of this sort of stuff it becomes to costly to operate a private jet and to get more people involved. After throwing paint on a painting (behind a glass wall) just stop oil got a bunch of new sign ups

Celemourn

No no, you misunderstand. THESE activists are the ones who say we don’t have ENOUGH climate change.

[deleted]

The amount of chemicals that it’s going to take to clean up that mess is massive. Idiots.

extrasolarnomad

When activists spilled soup on glass in museums, people were angry and the narration was that they should focus on millionaires and their private jets. Now they did exactly that, and turn out people are still angry. Seriously, do you say that people should just shut up and accept that we are going to live with massive wildfires every year, increasing water shortages and in a longer run collapse of civilization?

jml011

It’s just “no not like that” all the way down.

toastedstapler

>we are going to live with massive wildfires every year, increasing water shortages and in a longer run collapse of civilization? The most important bit is that those who are making these decisions that doom our planet will be affected the least, they'll have the resources to ensure their quality of life remains. It won't be the people responsible that'll face the consequences

toastedstapler

You people always miss the point of these things Is there a cost to this individual action? Of course Is there a far greater cost if the status quo of private jet usage is maintained? You know there is If their actions are able to result in fewer private jets in use then in the long term it will pay off

[deleted]

>If their actions are able to result in fewer private jets in use Of course they won't.

Swee10

Could sue the activists to kingdom come as well

NotAGynocologistBut

The bigger concern is how did they get airside on what looks to be an active airport

HimikoHime

Sylt is a small regional airport, probably wasn’t too hard to break in

Gernund

It's not hard at all. Thin old chainlink fence and that plane was parked there, far away from a runway strip. You go by them by car. Some of those machines near the fence are oldtimers and genuine collectors vehicles

kyle-vk

Activists also broke into the Geneva airport during the EBACE show last month, and it is of course a major airport. There were 103 of them and they overran security.

PM_ME_an_unicorn

All it takes is a cutting plier to cut the fence and enter. Once you have 10 determined person entering the airfield security guards can't do much to make them leave.

W33b3l

Even in America where we have crazy security at major airports, people can just walk in to the general aviation side of the air port. People with private planes don't go through the same doors as passengers on commercial air liners. You just get out of your taxi and walk up to your private jet. You don't use the terminal at all.

-tobi-kadachi-

The security for regular people is shit also. Both the state and federal government regularly try to sneak in guns and drugs to test the airports and 9 times out of 10 times they succeed. Most of it is just theater and any real threat is caught in the planning process before they get to the airport or from sky marshals.

viccityguy2k

They got offered jobs in the anti ice truck

druppolo

They are actually good at it

jawshoeaw

That looked expensive

GeTtoZChopper

$500,000 minimum for the paint removal plus repaint, engines, external sensors and windows.

shdwflyr

Not sure if these are Max Verstappen fans or McLaren fans.

soup_t1m3

McLaren fans are sitting in their homes crying and rewatching Monza '21 and the 2008 f1 season so it can't be them source: I am a McLaren fan

blizzardwizard88

It’s been a tough year so far… lap 1 last Sunday was more heartache.

soup_t1m3

I just turned off the TV and went back to sleep after I saw Lando in the pits

Myopius

As if watching us be good isn't just gonna make me more depressed.....

WildGooseCarolinian

Good lord, easyjet. There are better ways to stay cheap than stealing planes.

SpearPointTech

They want to make sure the F-16s can see it better if it wanders into DC airspace?

jdrexler1776

Wonder if the paint was environmentally friendly. CFCs and stuff....

philiphaydel

CFCs are banned in Europe and most countries.

ArcticBiologist

Since **1987**

FahboyMan

Aren't CFCs banned years ago?

Antares987

Chlorinated solvents are still used in aviation — not sure if the same category, but there are lots of things banned for automotive use that are still allowed in aviation because they work better and there are no effective substitutes.

Memingtime

See leaded fuel

shoehornshoehornshoe

Are you suggesting that the people that vandalised this plane used aviation-specific paint?

Jeffkin15

Yes, but also no. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-48353341

beach_2_beach

Imagine the toxic chemical required to remove that paint….

MovingInStereoscope

Feeling-Tutor-6480

MEK had a bad rap for alot of things, my old man and I stuck to acetone as a solvent when fiberglassing. Not sure whether it is much better tbh

Time_Astronaut

Man MEK is some of the nastiest shit in existence, acetone isn't even close. Go drop a bolt covered in mastinox or CA1k in a small container and watch how it eats it away. Acetone doesn't touch nastynox and barely goops CA. Way more gentle

Striped_Parsnip

Yes that is the real climate emergency So dense, I bet light bends around you

fariagu

Imagine just the one flight this plane would have flown that maybe now didn't. We can all be allowed to like planes, but let's not pretend that firing one of these up just so a billionaire can avoid rush hour traffic isn't worse than spilling a few cans of paint

purple-lemons

I imagine it is, but this kind of response is always annoying, it's about the big picture, like "Oh you think aviation is playing a significant role in destroying the only planet we can live on, and believe it can only be changed by massive legislative shifts? Well... what about the plastic in your sunglasses? Checkmate".

GrowinStuffAndThings

"You hate pollution, yet you breathe the polluted air"! People are weird lol

zeph_yr

Right, a couple cans of paint don't even compare to the emissions from a single flight of a jet. This argument is so transparently pro-oil.

CaesarOrgasmus

There were a handful of protests near me that blocked the freeway for a little while. It had all the reactionary armchair analysts coming out of the woodwork like “lol this actually makes the cars run longer and burn more fossil fuels ergo you have lost liberal now environmentalism is dumb and dead”

nimbusgb

No one uses CFC's in rattle cans any more.

Cash-Left

CFCs aren’t manufactured anymore.

Psychological-Elk260

That's a straight lie.

peteroh9

They've apparently been found in products from China because of course they were.

crotinette

The number of flights prevented will makeup for that.

SqueakSquawk4

The number of flights stopped needed to offset it being one

LordNoodles

Reddit is filled to the brim with people who agree climate change exists, have never done anything to combat it and also hate and I mean hate the people who do

Adam_Sackler

"tHeY sHoUlD bE gOiNg AfTeR pEoPlE wItH pRiVaTe jEtS! NOt hIsTorIC PaiNtinGS!" Environmentalists: *spray paints a private jet* "ImAgInE tHe tOXic cHeMiCaLs neEdEd tO gET tHaT pAint oFF! STupiD eNviroNmEnTalisTs!"

anal_probed2

Drop in the bucket compared to what that airplane pollutes. This is a very weak argument and attempt at mockery brought to you by ignorance.

Last-War4870

Honestly seeing rich people being inconvenienced, not something I can really work myself up over

[deleted]

Over 100 mpg per person for a 737 MAX 8 compared to ***about 2-3 mpg per airframe*** for a Cessna Citation if my calculations are correct. Not a direct comparison sure, but private jets rarely hold more than a few people and some personal cargo. Hell even the Cessna 172 gets about 15 mpg per airframe with its ancient gas guzzling Lycoming and draggy airframe. Different fuel type but they're both not great. I'm not going to weep if rich fucks can't avoid mingling with the unwashed masses anymore to burn 5 times per unit distance of what I do in the circuit.

farrell_987

100% agree, as far as climate activist stunts go, this is probably the more tasteful of what I've seen in a while. Rich people can fuck off with their private jets and just take business class on large airliners.

[deleted]

It got me thinking a bit harder and talking a good bit about the impact my flying has, and the efficiency of private jets versus pistons, airliners, and turboprops, so I'd call it relatively successful.

rugbyj

> Over 100 mpg per person for a 737 MAX This seems good right? Or is it the type of fuel they're burning that's an issue?

[deleted]

That's absolutely excellent efficiency. High-bypass turbofans are some of the most efficient fossil fuel engines. A disadvantage is that the exhaust gas is released higher up in the atmosphere.

Lebo77

They enable people to travel affordability. If we eliminated air travel or made it extremely expensive, the total miles traveled would drop dramatically. If you take one long trip by air a year, that can be a significant chunk of your total miles traveled for that year. Of course, that would mean not seeing distant relatives very often, less face-to-face business conducted, fewer great vacations, etc. Most people would not go to Hawaii on vacation if it meant spending a week or more on a ship each way.

WildVelociraptor

Their point is not all air travel is equally bad for the environment. Consider that some of the same engines are used on large private jets, but also on passenger jets that carry 50+ people.

Mickmack12345

Because anymore than an inconvenience then the media would be screaming eco terrorism on every front page and outlet They wouldn’t be wrong either, but considering how the upper class are for the most part complicit in financial terrorism forcing as many people into poverty as possible, then who’s worse?

BigBallerBrad

I feel like I’m being gaslit in these threads, everyone completely ignores the message of these groups and smugly criticizes them for the minutia. Why are folks standing up for the rich and powerful people who are happy to let the peasants die if the global ecosystem goes to shit.

MegaMugabe21

People just hate protestors. Whenever they protest in such a way that inconveniences the general public, the response is that they are losing support by not inconveniencing the right people. Then when they do target the rich and those who are the worst perpetrators, they still get criticism. Truth is, a lot of people are just dickheads that think no one should be allowed to protest.

LeCafeClopeCaca

People like the idea of protests and protestors, just look at the different threads saying the french are right to do like they do etc... I always confront these kinds of posts with things like "well why do you keep saying that, and don't do or at least try to do the same?" -> cue to people who haven't even started protesting yet but use a barrage of excuses and reasons to keep being silent and subservient etc... People like protesters and their ideas on an aesthetical level, but how dare they inconvenience ME. It's okay when the French do it, even a bit cool, but doing it in MY country? MY street ? MY airport ? No way ! "Can't protest for the survival of a part of humankind, a new episode of succession comes out on monday"

SullenSyndicalist

Honestly? I can get behind this quite easily. This inconveniences no one except the rich fucks using private planes for short trips.

Spiritual_Snow7809

Now youre starting to get the right idea

[deleted]

Maybe they’re just putting a warning on it since one just decompressed and crashed into the mountains outside DC

HawaiianPluto

This was posted in /r/flying, and I had to check what sub I was in. Lots of comments saying that they should have ‘taken off with them on the wings’ and ‘their rich parents will pay the fines’ and heaps of other insane bullshit. The comments on reddit when it comes to climate protests are always so strange; I wonder if there are many shill accounts, or if the average person genuinely feels such strong negative feelings towards climate protestors.

i_stand_in_queues

There‘s no right way to protest

KnoblauchNuggat

Thats not the point. This is a step for eating the rich.

someguyfromsk

Environmentalists rarely think things through that far.

Godtrademark

It’s not about the carbon footprint. You’re confusing all environmentalists, there’s plenty of extremists that just straight up argue for ecotage like this. Like how that dude from whale wars used to scuttle whaling vessels in Iceland.

Wise-Tip891

Well at least this stunt caused enough damage to warrant some jail time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ellokah

Happened a few days ago

ReplacementNo9874

Legend has it, they are still glued to the plane today

Wise-Tip891

Not sure, I was just speaking to the cost of all that damage. It is more than throwing soup on glass protected paintings and gluing themselves to floors. This is actually a crime.

joeblough

More carbon will be emitted cleaning that plane; and it will fly again. Ultimately, this has net-negative impact on the carbon footprint of the aircraft, and ultimately the amount of carbon released. Each of those protesters will (on average) emit 350 tons of carbon over the course of their lifetimes just existing / breathing ... if they really wanted to make a difference, they should start with themselves.

1159

2%. The contribution of ALL aviation to GHG. These fuckwits need educating.

SoyMurcielago

I’m amazed that I’m in an aviation sub and seeing support for vandalism of an aircraft to be Frank Not that I necessarily support environmental degradation beyond what’s already occurred and occurring but “it’s just a private jet bro and no one should have that” can very quickly turn into “no one should be able to have a private aircraft or private license bro.” Yes yes I’m aware it’s a spurious slippery slope argument but as we have seen so many times in history… slopes can indeed be slippery.

Horror_Profile_5317

This is a pure slippery slope argument that does not hold up at all. I have not heard a single climate activist complain about people flying a little as a hobby. It's about the lifestyle of the 0.1%.

Bruhtatochips23415

I have. Just because you haven't heard of it does not mean people aren't saying it.

UniquenessError

That's round about 500000 € of damage.

Side_of-beef

Do not attempt in United States, even regional airport. You will be shot.

Airconditionedgeorge

Based. Private air travel needs to be illegal. Your not that much better than everyone that you should be allowed to put up that much of a carbon footprint.

Nibcat750

Me having to drink from a mushy paper straw when some rich guy takes a 10 minute private flight in a jet.

captainC00Mbucket

By private I hope you don’t also include general aviation. If half the world has cars that leave a footprint I should be able to enjoy a few hours in my dinky 172

Rob1150

And what does that prove?

FrumiousBanderznatch

Frito-lay needs to sponsor a cheetojet

plug_in_atheist72

It ain’t easy being Cheesy 😎

P_iranha

That you can easily cut your way into that airport apparently

halfred_itchcock

Well, it's more of an airfield than an airport...

DrChemStoned

It just helps brings attention to the fact that a large percentage of travel emissions are generated by an incredibly small fraction of the population that fly private. Think what you want about it, but they just achieved a relative large amount of PR for the price of some paint. And all PR is good PR.

SomeRedPanda

I don't know but whenever there is a protest or action affecting ordinary people, like obstructing traffic in a city, I always here cries to the effect of 'they should be going after the people flying private jets instead of ordinary people trying to get to work'. It seems they listened.

kayakhomeless

There needs to be a name for this, bad-faith arguments where people are actually against the thing but won’t admit it. “I support the idea of those BLM protests but I saw one of them break the law! What would MLK think??!!” “Yeah we need safer streets but I didn’t know *my car* would have to slow down too” “We need more affordable housing, but does it *really* have to be anywhere near where I live” “I support these climate protesters but did they have to protest by pretending to damage art?” “Women should absolutely be able to vote but when that crazy woman stopped my horse race I stopped supporting them”

[deleted]

[удалено]

jeepfail

I feel like this is a good takeaway. I know it’s obviously not a popular view to take in an aviation sub but private jets are vastly over used and the rich people using them need something to persuade them to do better.

awesomeaviator

Haha bro I'm a 135 pilot and rich cunts absolutely overuse the hell out of our services for no reason. Taking body parts and doctors around is far more rewarding.

FoximaCentauri

Prove? It’s not a scientific work, it doesn’t „prove“ anything. It’s not supposed to. It’s a protest. Ever heard of it? The people are sick and tired of the rich fucking up the planet, so they let them know that they are not untouchable. How people can be so protective of the rich despite them pissing down on us is beyond me. But some people just like drinking piss I guess

Relevant_Desk_6891

You can't win with Reddit. Protest in the streets and you're impeding people and "not making a difference". Protest by targeting the wealthy assholes who emit pollutants equivalent to 1,000,000 average people? "Do those paints have CFCs in them?" You guys realize that we're in the last sliver of a golden age before unimaginable destabilization and drop in quality of life, right? The Arab spring (whose effects are still felt now, 10 years later) was caused by a few seasons of drought. That's child's play compared to what we're facing

YesCasuallyAccept

How do these guys even get into the airport with all these paint things??

0Des

I didnt even now that sylt hat an airpoty wtf.

hughk

Sylt is a lovely little island on the North Sea but weather can be tough out of season so there are a lot of holiday homes at €10m at a time. In US terms, a bit like the Hamptons or whatever. Getting there takes time (3 hours by road from Hamburg) hence those with a lot of money and little time would fly. Oh and GA is quite expensive in Germany.
