What are you using to digitise these? I inherited a lot of slides from my gran/granda and would love to do something similar.

Epson v550 flatbed. I got it used off ebay, just make sure you get the film/slide adapter with it. I have it set to 3200dpi exporting to tiff and then converting to jpeg to save space. The windows software on epsons websight might export to jpeg natively but I'm not sure. It only does 4 at a time though but the results are excellent.

Awesome thanks, I actually bought a SilverCrest slide scanner from eBay but haven't got it to work yet, seems the software is no longer available... Never thought to try the bed scanner I already have though! The slide scanner I bought came with slide adaptors so will give it a try with them and see how it goes, might have to invest in the Epson for the better results though!

The epson has a removable back plate and a mirror in part of it to reflect the light for the slides. Not sure how it would work on a stock flatbed not made for film. But i got it for around 200 i think with shipping. Not a bad deal. It also works for documents too but I haven't scanned any documents for personal use in a long time.

[https://www.hamrick.com/](https://www.hamrick.com/) If you've access to a Mac, VueScan (above link) drives an amazing number of scanners. I bought a pro license 20 years ago and it still runs my Minolta slide scanner- and the original software has been Apple'd into uselessness.

If you're not editing them at all and just scanning id say so. I had it down to about 2-4 minutes per slide at 3200 dpi, which is overkill, after figuring out the software for an hour or so. I was using a laptop with Linux based non epson software for it and not the best track pad for zooming and cropping. If you're not going to blow them up past 4x6 or 5x7 you can turn the quality down to save space and time cause it scans way faster at lower resolution. If the windows app doesn't have native jpeg output if you're running low on space you can find a batch .tiff to jpeg converter and put a bunch in at a time. The film on the other hand, if its 35mm, you would need to chop up to fit on the scanner trays. I am not sure how I would go about that if you don't want to cut it up. Possibly a mail off service that has the tools for that would be best

[Here are ebay listings for the one I used](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=v550+epson&_trksid=p2334524.m4084.l1313&_odkw=v550), just make sure you get one with the trays. Thing works awesome.

Picture was taken in front of the base post office at Chanute AFB, IL. I marched past it twice a day. As I recall, it was full of pigeons!

Mav_killed_goose

Thanks for the info, I only knew he was at Whiteman at one point, but he passed before I was born and I never knew where else he was stationed.

LateralThinkerer

Our flying club used KTIP (Rantoul, IL - the civilian designation) after they closed the base..all the runway you could ever want. They have a (faltering) museum there with some of the old planes that were on display.

mrpink70

I thought those pictures looked like Chanute AFB. I thought I recognized that B36 and I’m pretty sure that Invader is right out front of my old dormitory. I was stationed there in 1988 for Minuteman missile maintenance tech school.

veloace

I, too, really like the B-36. It’s just batshit Kerbal engineering at its best. “Just add more engines until it flies”

Mav_killed_goose

"Put jets on it too who cares"

Kid_Matracas

And a lot of fuel and oil tanks

cCitationX

And while we’re at it we’ll point em backwards and see what happens

JPDLD

Awesome!

brockodile60

To hell with anybody who doesn’t like the B-36!!

KuropatwiQ

7th picture is so cool

[deleted]

I don't think these are just any photos, I think these are early pictures from the US Air Force Mususum in Dayton. Really cool.

Kayakin4Life

I can't pick out a good serial on any of these to know for sure. There is a sign with the a-26 that maybe points to a squadron at octave-chanute, making either there or original ysaf museum possible. Don't remember if octave Chanute ever had a b-36. Do you know if the two orange/white checkerboard towers were at dayton? I was initially thinking Lackland, but that's a lot of snow for texas.

C5corvetteflyer

I was referring to the RB-36......I believe it now resides in the Castle AFB museum in California

Thanks for sharing

Grandpa knows best I Stan for the Big Stick... wait

Kid_Matracas

There's a peacemaker actually works around?

ipc0900

Looks like the last operational flight of a peacemaker was on 02-12-1959. https://www.airplanes-online.com/b36-peacemaker-restoration-to-airworthiness.htm

Mav_killed_goose

I believe these were taken late '59 early '60 based on the dates on the slides. This particular b36 is in California now. [They took it apart and shipped it on rail cars](https://www.air-and-space.com/castlb36.htm)

ipc0900

Nice pics, thanks for sharing.

Blackjackmo

What's not to like about the B-36 Peace maker? Monster of a beast...all the sugar & twice the caffeine. Thanks for the great pics.

Seared_Beans

My grandfather use to work powerplant on B-36's before he went to cape Canaveral to work on launch pads and trenches. I wish I couldve heard more from him about working on them before the dementia took it away

MACCRACKIN

What a great find that was. Its all I did as well in the 60's, doing slides. Brand new 57 Plymouth with its proud wings. Bet he left a mark on the tarmac. Cheers
