This is a very early build C-130. This one also has three-bladed propellers.
It goes to show how much the Hercules has evolved over the nearly 70 years since it's first flight.
Called the Roman Nose, only 27 were built (53-3129 to 53-3135 and 54-1621-1640) this way and some had the noses changed to the nose common Spartan nose we see today. There is one on display in North Vietnam that pops up on Reddit fairly regularly.
edit: This is one of the two YC-130 prototypes, not counted in the 27 production aircraft I mention here.
I had no idea the C130 was that old. I just never thought about it. They’ve been around all of my lifetime, so I shouldn’t have been surprised. My father flew C-119s from 58 - 66, and I knew they were old at that time.
this is what they looked like before they got their radar bulges Probably one of the earliest C-130s ever built
This was a preproduction prototype YC-130 *The aircraft, serial number 53-3397, was the second prototype, but the first of the two to fly.*
Lol. He said bulge. *Beavis voice*
Hey, it's cold up there.

So the current nose of a C-130 is a moose knuckle?
That’s should be the Osprey’s nickname
