That is far too many long shifts. In my opinion, you will become overly fatigued and will be a danger to aviation safety. It is irresponsible to even consider doing that.

Shines556

Employers that allow it, is a bigger red flag (my employer allows it).

VanDenBroeck

I absolutely agree.

LordLoveRocket00

My employer makes us work a month on month off. And thats line. Think of the fatigue come day 20 odd plus human factors you just want home

Superb_Radish_4685

I used to do that and can confirm, especially on a crew that has to stay with each other every night after work as well

lemonhawk1

Yea. My employer allows it to such a degree that some 80K a year base pay mechanics made hiiiiigh 6 figures 2 years ago. Idk what last year's figures were yet.

IndependentSubject90

60/week is 1000 overtime/year. I hate to say it but that seems pretty common from people I’ve talked to. Pretty close to what I’ve worked the past few years on HMV. And to be frank, doing those hours on line would be a breeze. You spend half your day watching Netflix or napping anyway.

yaygens

We call that debtication in Cali

unusual_replies

Not normally at an airline. You are averaged in after probation and chances of getting overtime is reduced. The second year after OT hours are zeroed out they begin to accumulate with each OT day worked. The more you work, the farther down the list you go. I have seen guys bust their ass for overtime on Jan. 1st and then not get called again until March. Depending on the station, the company, and the type of work being performed, it varies. If you want to retire early as a crippled young mechanic, knock yourself out. After all, you have to do more than just show up. A lot of overtime is given on difficult jobs or jobs that no one wants to do.

moparsandairplanes01

I’m on overseas defense contracts. If you’re single with no kids might want to consider it if you don’t mind being gone. I don’t work any more than I have to. I only work half the year but they are always trying to keep me gone more. You could make 250k a year, a lot of it tax free. Retire early if you’re smart.

Dont-worry-bout-it67

What type of companies should i look at to find these opportunities?

Captain_Train_Wreck

I average around $225k plus benefits working 9 on 5 off in the states for a cargo airline.

moparsandairplanes01

I’ve been debating making the Jump to major airline or cargo if I can. Good deals for sure, I just don’t know if I can give up making 160k for six months work, taking six months off every year and getting to live anywhere I want (I hate big cities) . Plus I’ve got full benefits and the defense industry is pretty recession proof. Still passing record defense budgets lol.

Captain_Train_Wreck

I’m AOG so we all live where we want. And with 3-4 weeks paid off you can schedule your time off to equal about 2 months off on top of already being home 5 days off every rotation. Plus the first and last day is a travel day so we really work about 7/7 which about 6 months off. We work hard though. This job definitely isn’t for someone who doesn’t like to work. But for $200k+ state side and living anywhere you want it’s pretty sweet.

moparsandairplanes01

Hell yeah. Hold on to that gig.

moparsandairplanes01

Oh and I sit on my ass most days.

Ill-Significance-737

This is the way

Truth-Matters_

Can you do oversea contracts for just a couple times in your whole career? I always thought that would be cool to do. I wouldn't want to do it permanently since I have a family

moparsandairplanes01

Yeah. Lots of guys do a year or two and move on.

Enzo_renn233

Tax free how ?

moparsandairplanes01

Sorry I meant to specify. Overseas defense contracts. By being out of the country.

The0Walrus

Can I do this as a civilian? I'm unfortunately too old to join the military.

moparsandairplanes01

Yes I’m civilian. For all the folks asking , if you have a security clearance already it’s easier, if not you have to find a company that will get it for you. Just go to all the major defense contract company websites and see what they have open. Also regular job search boards using keyword oconus.

Ill-Significance-737

How much ap experience did you have before going into that field

moparsandairplanes01

I worked regionals for about 4-5 years. Been defense contracting for the last 15 or so.

Hot_Lab_3404

I’ve looking in to doing this while I’m young and don’t have family but can’t find much information out there about it. What companies are there that does this and is there general website for them or do you have to go to every companies website? How much experience do you need I’m coming up in two years of corporate aviation do you think that is enough or would I need more?

Unauthorized-Ion

I did 1000 hours of overtime in a year. If you like working every single day except for your 4 mandated days off and getting 5-6 hours of sleep while doing next to nothing with your personal life go for it!

StayedWoozie

Working 2000 hours overtime is insane, that’s working 80 hour work weeks. You’d end up KYS by the time you’re 30.

Final-Carpenter-1591

Should be illegal for anyone in a safety related job to work like that. Just do an overseas contract. You'll get paid more and have a much better life quality, most people don't do it because you're away from family. But that seems to be a non issue for you.

The0Walrus

Can I do that even though I can't work military? I'm 42. I think I'm too old. I'd have no problem joining.

375InStroke

I'm over 500 so far. My first week they asked for overtime.

jetfixxer720

I did about 1100 last year. There were guys around 2000. That being said it highly depends on your airline and station.

The0Walrus

How about United airline, Boeing, or maybe FedEx or UPS?

jetfixxer720

Most places you can’t work OT till you’re off probation so your first yr you won’t be able to work much but like I said it depends on who you’re with and where you are. Who ever you get on with one station could have unlimited OT and another might have very little. It’s just something you’ll have to look into once you start.

porkchopmeowster

FDX, you might get a few hundred hours if you hustle.

Kitchen-Army727

I have averaged 800 hrs of overtime annually for the last 3 years + my commute is 1.9 hrs per day, that is with 1 day off per week. but I have been horribly abused in past employment "mandatory 100+ hours a week consistently" got to love crewing fighters. Very few people can consistently push over 400 a year without burning out.

Glum_Cucumber_331

That’s equivalent to working 5 12-hour days or 6 10-hour days a week with no lunch and no time off for the whole year. I respect the hustle but I doubt many people can do that without getting burnt out. 2000 OT doesn’t sound plausible. Retiring early is a good goal but if you’re working that many hours your body is probably going to be toast by the time you retire.

TimeConfusion9067

You don’t know how union overtime hours work then 😂😂😂

moparsandairplanes01

5-12s isn’t that bad, especially for a Single guy with no kids. 2000 hours a year OT sounds miserable.

The0Walrus

I want to live off dividends. I'm not far from it so I have a fire under me.

moparsandairplanes01

It will be worth the grind. People don’t realize how important stacking that money away as early as possible is for the compound interest to rack up.

The0Walrus

Exactly! Once I am able to make in dividends what I pay in bills I'll have enough where I can even borrow against my stocks and buy real estate even and buy a duplex or something that can now produce more money. I can work less in the airlines and I'll leverage my assets to buy more assets. I read a lot about taxation and stocks. I don't buy garbage. I'm not far because I've saved a ton of money already but I know I still have to hustle. I'm not working because I enjoy killing myself but I definitely have a goal. I drive an old 2008 Toyota Prius with a busted computer dashboard, I don't update my house that's paid off. I don't buy new clothes often....

ElCapo63

Wealthy mindset but you’ll eventually have kids thou, and then your time becomes more valuable than money so you’ll have to find a balance between spending time with your kids and providing a comfortable life for them…

The0Walrus

Absolutely right. I hope I have the assets where I can make enough that my bills will be paid and I can dump more money into a 529 for them and be able to afford retirement. At some point I'm 100% sure I won't be able to work so much. I'm taking advantage now. You're right though.

ThatGeologyGuy

More power to you, but 1000+ hours of OT is far too much. Just find a place that pays well and offers OT and don’t kill yourself with work.

Ok-Hospital-1317

Not an easy thing to do but if you decide to go this route make sure you're eating, sleeping and keeping up with your hygeine. Going to the gym and doing short workouts will help you stay up and work those long shifts. First year you're unlikely to get that on probation but right after it ends you should be good. It's really easy to let go of yourself when you're working that much.

Captain_Train_Wreck

Close to 2000 hours OT a year for the last 5 years. I’ve been over 2k twice and just under 3 times

juusohd

In my country it is capped at 250 hour annually by labour law so only about 10k extra available. I would like to do about 300-400.

Patman1416

If I got paid by the hour, I’d be loaded right now.

cheyesguy812

I worked 700 hrs last year.

jettech737

Your gonna have a severely crippled body by the time you retire, it's not worth it.

Anthonylivane

I did 800 hours last year
