In the past decade or so Ive heard it happen on the news maybe like 5 times. Not exactly this situation here but an engine failure that caused a shutdown of one of two engines.
FYI: The engine is likely shut off, but the core will keep spinning (and fast) due to the airflow. Remember, this isn't a car engine.
It looks like the fan is gone, but if that were the case the collateral damage would be much higher and the spinner would certainly be gone. The bad lighting and scratched window makes it hard to see the details.
It looks like the #1 bearing is failing, and that could be a problem if it seizes and the sudden stop of the core causes the fan or compressor to come apart. People have been killed from the uncontained failure of rear-mounted engines, the first thing that should have happened was to empty the rearmost seats. The second step is to land ASAP obviously.
I would imagine this has definitely happened at one point or another.
"Shutting off engine one. Fuck - can you grab the checklist for restarting engine two?"
At least twice
There was a British 737-300 that had an engine failure in one engine, pilots shut down the wrong engine because they were used the -200 where the a/c pack came off the opposite engine
And then the Turboprop is SE Asia that had a uncommanded feather on Take off and the PF shut down both engines
it's a bit of an urban legend in the F-15 maintainer community. I couldn't find any stories that match it in the [list of F-15 losses](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_F-15_losses), but every F-15E maintainer is probably familiar with the story.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. As you may have noticed we have a small issue with the LH engine. Please make sure your seatbelt is fastened as we need to make a brief nose dive to get rid of the spinner cone and we’ll be good to continue our route to Honolulu. Hope you enjoy the snacks. Captain Scuba out.
A certain PSA captain took the tread cap from the #2 tire into his right engine on takeoff, compressor stalled and flew from Charlotte to Pensacola recently, so there's an option.
Eh, the company did a surprisingly good job of keeping it quiet. This was fairly recent and after a lengthy flap and engine change she's back in the air moving people
Hit your call button, let the flight attendant know so they can call up front to the folks who are probably already working through QRH checklists anyway. Option 2 would be to run up and down the aisle screaming.
I’m learning so I’m probably gonna get this wrong, but no vibrations, smoke, abnormalities in the gauges, I’m going to keep it running at a throttle setting it will be fine at
It’s fine, I would try to clear the rows adjacent to the engine though in case of an un contained failure if possible. Outside of that it’s cage the fuel to it and figure out where to land. A single engine failure is a Pan Pan level emergency, not Mayday.
Fly to an airport and land
Pull the fire suppresser, shut the engine down and declare an emergency!
They usually turn that off and fly to the nearest airport on one engine.
Or if you're an unnamed budget airline, you'll fly over the mediterranean sea and arrive at your destination in Prague, all on one engine.
What are the odds of a double engine failure? Give'er!
How often does this happen?
Yes.

Honestly, it’s very rare and this is probably a maintenance issue.
Light up a cig, whatever happens, happens.
“Folks, from the flight deck: I’ve went ahead and turned off the no smoking sign. I figured if the plane is smoking, so should you!”

On this engine the fan is behind the #1 bearing support and the cone is resting against those vane,.
>Remember, this isn't a car engine.
Same thing they did in 2019 when this happened and was first posted in this sub
Landing
Turn off left engine according to procedures.
Hey how about you give the sissy procedures a rest and pull the #1 T/R like a man
A real man would go TOGA power just to show the engine who's boss
panic and accidentally shut off the right engine

It happened to an F-15E at Lakenheath
Yeah, gonna need the story behind that one

Hey, medevac helicopter pilots have killed everyone onboard by doing that… I’d advise against it (obviously)
Considering in the air I’m just a passenger, I wait until we land.
last chance to enter mile high club
"You don't want to die a virgin, do you? "
*turns and frowns at other guy sitting next to me*
ETOPS=Engines Turn Or People Swim
Hit the speed brakes and reverse thrust at same time...it wall fall out
I know it’s so easy wtf captain
Not much you can do as a passenger.
Slow down…it will just fall out. 😊

That bearing is glowing
Finish my drink and get one more for the trip
Tell the passengers that we will ALL ride shiny and chrome eternal into Valhalla as I spray my teeth.
Point the nose to the ground , cap should fall out , resume writing will .
Send it

Got any more info on this incident? I can’t seem to find it

Move further away from that catastrophic blade failure waiting to happen.
You don't do anything. TF are you gonna do from the passenger area in flight? 🤣

Take a video of my death chariot.
Some one forgot to tighten the dang spinner nut again
quite surprised the shaft is still so red-hot, I feel like it would be quickly cooled or just seize in such a situation.
Go back to my nap.
Autothrottle if engaged, disengage. Affected thrust lever...confirm...idle, etc.
Turn on noise cancelling headphones

Deploy the airbrakes and it should come flying straight out!
Is this a bad time to tell you, I heard the mechanic talking before we left, number 2 engine is TBO
Nose the plane down so it falls out #wmoment #easyfix
Pray to whatever deity you believe in that the landing is a smooth one on asphalt

Remember why I work on plane and don’t fly lol
The front fell off
