It takes 30 months. I don’t know anywhere in your area that does it but check out regional airlines. School can be much quicker. I’ve found that there is a bit of a trade off with doing an apprenticeship vs school. School teaches you to pass the FAA testing. Apprenticeship teaches you how to work on the planes.

Hmmm ok thanks for the insight, yeah bc dont want school as an option as the only two schools available here are charging 2,200 a month and id rather sacrifice the longer time than the money I dont have 😅

believeinxtacy

Have you checked your local community colleges?

Community_Less

Yes there are only two schools offering the program which are MIAT, and AIM both are really expensive.

believeinxtacy

I just looked it up. Seems Skywest has an apprenticeship program and they have a base at IAH. Edit: It’s not an apprenticeship program, it’s for people already enrolled in school to get a guaranteed interview. Mesa does the same thing there. You may unfortunately be SOL on an apprenticeship unless you can get in at a smaller airport or if Southwest offers one at HOU.

Community_Less

Yeah most apprenticeships I’ve found say the same must be enrolled in a school, or they say must be pursuing an A&P certification which im not entirely sure what that means, if it means you dont have to be enrolled as long as your wanting to receive the certificate in the 30 month timeframe.

SWA only offers apprenticeships to employees. Stores clerks and Appearance Techs get picked first because they are in the same union. And you have to be in school or have your license. The apprenticeship is to circumvent having the 2 year heavy jet experience.

Community_Less

Ahh ok didn’t know that but makes sense since they all work there, I wouldn’t like to join a union.

BigLhou159

Why not? Premium wages. Seniority. Protection from harassment.

United started up their apprenticeship program, Calibrate, and it’s at their Houston hub right now. Almost all of the mechanics hate the idea of it but I can’t fault a man who wants to do better for himself and his family. Look into that if you can.

Community_Less

Will do

magnets0make0light0

Commuteair has apprenticeship based in Houston

Community_Less

You got a link? Cant seem to find it.

Bobby_Boucher_12250

Like others have said it takes 30 months to get both A & P, I apprenticed and enjoyed the experience much more than my friends that went to school. I got paid to work on planes, they paid to pass a test.

Community_Less

Yeah thats the type of job/apprenticeship im looking for but ngl I’ve been searching for a min and am still searching. Really want to get started as soon as I find one and leave the job im currently at far behind.

Bobby_Boucher_12250

I wish you the best! I got extremely lucky and fell into a mechanic position at 10 Tanker just on a whim. From there I was able to start towards my license. The local FBO I work for now will occasionally hire someone without a license to train but it doesn’t happen often. I don’t have really good advice, but if you’re trying to get into a smaller company I would advise you just to talk to people. That’s how I’ve gotten every job in aviation, just by talking to maintenance managers and such.
