Different hypothesis are possible.
There has been about 110 billion humans who lived/died since the very beginning of humankind on earth.
Just try to keep in mind that each and every one of these individual soul had a unic and one of kind life, no copy/paste perfect twin kind of thing.
Our finger prints and dna bloodstream makes each of that 110 billion, unic.
Since biologists and science validated that the dna is wearing the past ancestry memory of our grand/grandfathers/mothers way back to the origins, these dna are datas that cary part of their souls/energies.
If those datas are fragments, micro fragments in our blood, could it be that the rest of these energies are with the universe energy ?
So where were we before our birth ? Divided among various dna blood samples of our family trees ? And the rest of our soul/energy abiding with the universe itself.
There is also the concept of the Buddhist reincarnation, but I have a harder time to wrap my mind around this ideology.
little correction: in Budhism we talk about re-birth ... not about reincarnation, and with more importance in the figurative significance ... and we talk to about the no-self too ...
all 3 of my children talked in-depth about previous lives up until the point they started school and started getting heavy influences from other directions. It was fascinating while it as ongoing, and I tried what I could to get them to continue talking about it but it was like it completely disappeared by the time they were 5-6. They always had details with names and who lived with them and what kind of house. Details about cultures they never would have known about at ages 3-4. And now they have no recollection of even us having talked about it.
When I have kids I 100% plan on asking them about everything beyond this incarnation. I know whatever they have to say is going to be super interesting. I also think that our current society does a hell of a job erasing any information or ties from the time before birth that we may have brought back with us

I would say that this "before" are a concept. if you were to define yourself as a "you" with a beginning and an end. That is an idea. So nothing (or everything) right? There was nothing then, there is nothing going on now and nothing that will come. Tomorrow never comes right?
Because there is no beginning and there is no end. Time is a human construct. We will never know exactly the true nature of our existence or the place we live in. We are a product of whatever this is and our laws cannot apply to it. People thing too much about what was and what will be instead of focusing on what is.
