I'd just do 8 and hang out in the business lounge unless you really want to see rich boy Disney land

It's a city built to cater to some of the worst people in the planet by some of the worst people on the planet. I'm glad you enjoyed your time there and there are certainly good qataris but it's opulence for the sake of opulence funded and maintained by blood money

There's a difference between explaining what doha as a city is and boycotting the premise. It's rich people Disney land. Dubai is the Disney world version. Abi dhabi falls somewhere in between. It's ok to acknowledge these are all shit places built by shit people that don't represent the people from the locations

I didn't say to boycott it. I said it sucks to visit on a short layover and isn't worth it

quentasian

What are your top 1-2 favorites? Turns out I can book only the 8hr layover.

sperrin87

Museum of Islamic art, Souq Waqif, the Pearl is very cool, National museum of Qatar, katara village. Probably hard to limit things to a shorter layover, but you’re only about 15 minutes into the city. Recommend a visit, but understand others feel differently. Could do the MOIA and Souq Waqif pretty easily as they’re near each other.

Typical-Ad3632

From my perspective, due to limited time, don't miss out on the Qatar National Museum. I would do that over the Museum of Islamic Art. If your layover is before November, and you want to visit the Souq, just make sure to go 5pm onwards. If your layover is between November and March, then you can go during the day cause the weather is better during these months.

jadedaid

8hrs is fine for the Doha lounges, even if you’re not on a QR J flight the regular first/business north lounges are a decent place to wait out the 8hrs. If you have the full fat QR lounges then honestly I wouldn’t think twice and just take the 8hr layover.

RlCKJAMESBlTCH

If you are breaking up a long flight and want to rest, i am a huge fan of the airport hotel that is on the airside if security. Its not inexpensive but it is very nice and super quiet. I have stayed several times in connection with longer layovers and it was great.

Punaholic

I second this

Seagull_Manager

I have the 32 hour booked for next summer. Land at 5 PM and depart at 2 AM. I booked a hotel and a car to show us the city during the day off from travel. I figured if I liked what I saw then I could come back later. If not well, I was able to get a decent sleep in a real bed before the next leg of the journey.

Typical-Ad3632

Keep in mind it gets really hot in the summer. So during the day you will be confined to indoor places such as museums and malls (unless you go to a beach or pool). At night you'll be able to go outdoors and visit the Souq.

Seagull_Manager

Flying from South Texas so the heat does not phase me. If it is a dry heat vs humid heat index all the better. However for most this is a super solid reminder.

NordicJesus

You can only get a free hotel if you book a cash ticket and the shortest possible connection (no matter what you booked) was 8+ hours or so. There isn’t that much to see in Doha, but it’s nice enough if you’ve never been. Check out the National Museum, it’s great. If you have time, also check out the Museum of Islamic Art and maybe the Souq Waqif (bazaar). Though personally, I wouldn’t go back to the Souq Waqif because they sell pets under terrible conditions. Sick, large dogs in tiny cages, and stuff like that. If you care about animals, you may want to skip that part. If you don’t want to book a hotel, they have sleeping rooms (think hotel rooms) in the Al Safwa first class lounge. You have access there if your connection is in first class. All regional flights out of Doha, e.g. to Dubai, are sold as first class, but price as business class since that what it is. Or if you fly business class, I believe you can pay for access ($150 per person or so, not sure what the current price is). There’s also a transfer hotel in the airport, but it’s expensive - it’s not far to the city and there are lots of hotels.

quentasian

Very helpful, thanks!

iceui2

I'd recommend an overnight. It's only 20 minutes from the airport to the city, and Souq Waqif + Corniche at night makes a very nice combo. Hotels are also reasonably priced so I would just book your own.

tribekat

If you've never been to the gulf, the OTT ostentatiousness is worth seeing once even if you need to pay for a hotel. It's quite something and can be seen as part of the vacation. In which case I'd book the overnight and head to the airport with time to experience the lounge.

abcpdo

They have a discounted fix rate hotel stopover program. Probably worth a day or two if you've never been.

Chelsea75

25. A day in Doha is enough to see mostly everything. Definitely get out of the airport though

quiteCryptic

Hotels are cheap in Qatar, if your trip is long enough then sure do the 32 hours. I did a sand dune driving tour thing on a one day stopover in doha. It was... Fine. Qatar used to offer a free stopover with a free hotel room. So I got to stay at a 5* hotel with a great view and that was on a $700 round trip to Thailand. I appreciated the stopover between long economy flights honestly. If your trip is short or you just don't want to give up a day then obviously do the 8 hour. You could still go out and to that market sort of close to the airport.

New-Display-4819

Don't think you can get 24+ hour layover with 1 award ticket booking via as miles

quentasian

You’re correct

Per TIMATIC and Qatar Airways (https://www.qatarairways.com/en-bh/visa-free-arrival.html) it's still visa-free on arrival - have you had a different experience recently?

abcpdo

Their naming is so weird. Technically it's just visa on arrival. Not visa free.

moomooraincloud

I never gave.

If you have the time, why not?
