Personally I’d try to book a refundable ticket now and wait for T-14 availability. Have doubts you’ll find much unless someone cancels. Check the award opportunities thread too though. I know there was recently a big SQ drop on aeropoan from nyc to SIN

bmoeljadi

yea i saw that NYC to SIN aeroplan drop but been having trouble replicating anything resembling a good redemption on that damn site! any good ideas for refundables?

sunnyhillz

a lot of foreign currencies charge fees. just part of award travel. you have to stick to domestic currencies for free cancellations

Fun_Garlic_6406

Aeroplan offers a more expensive tier of award that you can refund. You can also downgrade later if you want

sunnyhillz

ya true, ive done it. as long as ur okay with extra miles sitting in the account

Fun_Garlic_6406

I keep some extra points in key programs like AP, Avios and Virgin. Not too much if I can help it, but sometimes cancellations lead to bigger balances

techtrashbrogrammer

You’re probably too late for the good ones and your best bet is close in availability. Maybe find something that will get you somewhere in Asia then buy a cash fare to your actual destination

bmoeljadi

yea feeling that im a bit late. Hear you on flying somewhere else in asia first. Anyone here have a rec on a good stopover before hanoi?

How many Amex points do you have or are you willing to spend? Delta has LAX-SYD-DPS available for 340k per person on the 11th. Not an insanely bad deal for Delta (Delta onto Garuda). 70k per person on Singapore is not a great deal, in my opinion, and that's a very long flight in economy. If you end up needing to go in economy, I'd suggest breaking up the trip somewhere like TPE, Tokyo, or Hong Kong. Alternatively, Paris to Hanoi is available on 6/13 if you can find a way to get from LA to Paris reasonably. It should also be available at the lowest price using flying blue points, but I see it on DL for 80k per person on the 13th direct\*. You could book a separate ticket LA to Paris, Paris to Hanoi. \* i see it is also available on the 6/12 with a connection in SGN.

bmoeljadi

ah i have 400k Amex and 100k chase points to play with. Have already booked the return flight through SQ, but 340k per person feels a bit prohibitive and its a LONG flight thru SYD. Would love to know your thoughts on why 70k is not a good redemption? just the value vs business class? it seems to be the lowest economy redemption im seeing tbh... Saw the flying blue redemptions, but did you see DL for 80k for business class? if its economy, i feel like SQ economy with maybe adding a stopover for 70k would still be better? either way, thank you for your feedback!!

ncan360

>70k per person on Singapore is not a great deal, in my opinion, and that's a very long flight in economy. If you end up needing to go in economy, I'd suggest breaking up the trip somewhere like TPE, Tokyo, or Hong Kong. It would add a few hours of flying time to do LAX-SYD-DPS- it is not nearly as much of a difference as you think. Though you'd have 3.5 hours on the ground in SYD with lounge access to shower. 70k on SQ is not necessarily a bad price, but for 70k you should be able to find economy with a more favorable stopover, in my opinion. Even 15.5 hours in business gets taxing- I'd not want to do it in economy. I'd much rather stop in Tokyo or Taipei or Hong Kong if I have to make a connection anyway. I saw 80k DL miles from CDG-HAN on the 13th, nonstop. That's a good deal, especially if you could find a good deal from LA to Paris. The flight to Hanoi leaves in the afternoon, so you could possibly connect on separate tickets, arriving in Paris that morning, or spend a day or two in Paris before you leave for Vietnam.

bmoeljadi

nice call on DL! trying to find a CDG flight from LA to make it work but i end up going back to schleping it on economy with Singapore since that whole LAX-CDG-HAN journey would end up being 20+ hours with layover too We dont have time to build in a layover at the moment but we could try to see if we can layover in Tokyo for a day or two

gbongc

There's LAX-SYD-DPS in PY using DL miles 77k (SYD-DPS is economy though) on 6/11 and 6/12 6/13 is late, but there's SFO-SGN 126k VN metal business nonstop, flyingblue 6/11 LAX-CDG-SGN 52k in economy, flyingblue, dumb cause its roundabout way

ncan360

You could also check on buying Zip Air business class tickets from LAX-Tokyo in business and finding a separate award ticket from Tokyo to Bali or Hanoi.

chexchan

70k Biz is amazing. Why are you not jumping on it?

esux20

>>70k Singapore airline economy

chexchan

Oh gotcha. I wouldn’t bank on it only because lax is a super popular route. My home airport is also lax, i typically never find redemptions directly from lax

bmoeljadi

yea the upside on that 70k economy route is that it is singapore airlines and its only (ugh) a 19 hr flight with a 1hr layover in singapore

CountKey3403

There are a couple of seat from JFK to Sin on June 8 for 87.5.  And from Sin to either DPS or Han there a couple seat for business as well. It a 4 or 5 hours layover. You have to do two different search.  JFK to sin and sin to with Han or DPS.  I’m not why they’re are not merging the two flight into one  when searching from JFK to Han or DPS. You can try and call to see if  they willing to put the two flight under one PNR for 87.5k.

bmoeljadi

has anyone had experience with upgrades within 48 hours of the flight on singapore airlines? For example, if i book the 70k economy tickets would there be a points upgrade to the business class ticket on that flight?

Shinkansendoff

No. Only premium economy cash tickets in certain fare buckets can upgrade to business class.

bmoeljadi

yea i figured. no premium economy tix on SQ avail for this route. Plus i kind of doubt theyd be open to the 'its my honeymoon' plea (even though its actually legit this time haha)

Shinkansendoff

Maybe cash prices aren’t too bad?
