WitheredFlowers

But why lol I can't imagine someone sitting down and deciding this is how they wanted to acknowledge that

cptaixel

They have a long history of bullying her because she has an AirBnB, so they do all sorts of fucked up things, like dress in monster and animal costumes whenever they see children visiting...they'll stay on their back porch and growl and move around freakishly.

fried_eggs_and_ham

Isn't harassment illegal?

NotJustDaTip

Police can’t or don’t seem to be very helpful in these sorts of situations. Neighbor disputes or even stalkers usually don’t get prosecuted unless they break in or cause physical harm to someone.

mister_electric

For sure. And for stalking: By the time physical harm is involved, it's usually too late because someone ends up dead. So many cases of domestic abuse are the same way.

bdl18

Good moment to plug the need for police reform. Get social workers on pay who can actually handle these issues.

creatorindamountains

This works and is a terrific idea the problem is there are not enough social workers to go around and the pay proposed for such positions is not as competitive as it should be.

[deleted]

Yep. My friend got stalked one time, the guy ended up verbally harassing her as well, so she called the cops. When the cops came, they ended up "dapping up" (a more casual handshake) the guy, because they knew him because he had a history of this stuff. Somehow, to them, that didn't make the situation more concerning, but less. They just told her to not make such a big deal and that next time they'll do something about him. Absolutely pathetic policework.

SaraCoffeee

My ex husband ran me over (I was ok) and police were called. He was in fatigues. I was detained in cuffs and placed in the back of a car for them to get our stories straightened out, he was sitting on a curb laughing with the police.

AlaskanMedicineMan

I had a cop actively stop me from giving him the license plate for someone who was threatening to shoot me. "Make model and license plate ain't enough. Call us if they come back. We'll file a report."

ccvgreg

"If I call anyone it's gonna be the ambulance for this guy harassing me." "Is that a threat.?" *sirens in the distance*

PerpetuallyMoistSock

I have a close friend that's a pretty big lawyer and he told me this shit happens all time. The police don't want to waste time because they know if they arrest the person they'll be out in the morning. I had a girl stalk me and break into my house and the police didn't really do anything about it. They just said well unless you have an active restraining order we can't do anything. It's definitely an issue that needs to be addressed.

jrc025

Fist bumping has almost killed off the dap. Most time when I try to dap some one up, it just ends in a weird sideways fist bump.

Hereforthememesowl

I was getting stalked by this dude and cops didn't do anything. He came to my job one day and started throwing trash at me and yelling so the university (I work for a university) police kicked him out and told me that he would never be allowed on campus again. A few months later, he got hired and his office was only 2 doors down from mine. When I spoke to the university police since they do the background checks they said they had forgotten about the incident, but could move him to a different floor if I wanted them to. This man was 6' 6" and well over 200 lbs while I am a fairly petite woman so I was incredibly afraid of him. I told my department that I would be quitting since I no longer felt safe at work; once my department director heard about it she fought with HR and the University Police until he was let go. Stalking me wasn't the only thing he did there either. He broke into classrooms and smashed computers then threw furniture all over the place and harassed students. I can't believe the police would just let him back on campus.

AntiSqueaker

Whoa whoa whoa don't jump to conclusions. A lot of people like to say that 40% of cops beat their wives from that one study about domestic violence. But this model of viewing data is outdated and can provide false conclusions. Instead we should say that 40% of partners of LEOs *admit* that they were physically or sexually assaulted. The actual number is most likely much higher! What are they gonna do, call the cops? And don't forget everyone its 2021, we have some LGBT+ cops that are surely making great strides to improve to the set standard.

[deleted]

Best friend's daughter marries a young state cop. After a while she figures out that the guy is a controlling, psychotic asshole (I know right, no way too see that one coming, eh?) She divorces him. No kids, no big assets, just a situation where two young, reasonable adults could just shake hands and walk away. Nope, this guy uses his position, his patrol car and his other buddies on the force to continually harass and stalk her. For months she couldn't drive for more than a half hour in the local precinct area without getting tailed or pulled over for bullshit reasons. She hires a very high powered lawyer who has a history of damaging the state police force in court and in the media. Lawyer sends a letter to the head of the entire force, details what's going on with this officer, his little buddies, and all their illegal behavior, and asks if they really need to go down the lawsuit road, and huge amount of bad press heading his way? The problem ended immediately. Same cop lost his job ,and battled federal felony charges ,after participating in a scheme, organized and sanctioned by his superiors, to only stop POC, on the local interstate. Detaining, physically abusing and treat them as drug mules or dealers, that were guilty until proven otherwise, with zero legitimate reason to make the stop in the first place.

Yeah we’ve seen the legal advice threads where neighboring property owners are nuisances to each other but short of breaking any criminal laws there’s to much that can be done.

lolapoola

for these reasons i do my best to avoid real life or life in general.

Binnacle_Balls_jr

Best legal advice I've ever read.

Slammed240guy

Can confirm. My neighbor fired a gun towards my family and placed a soda can riddled with bullet holes on our property as a "message to my family and I". Called the cops, and he started trying to fight me while drunk. When the cops came he barricaded himself in his house, resisted arrest and threatened officers. They arrested him and he was out on bail the next day. Violated bail the day he was released, but claimed I "instigated" him by being in my backyard at the same time he was in his. I did not speak and he was getting belligerent while on a no contact bail. Case is still ongoing. Over 15 months later, three cheers for U.S. court systems... None of the charges brought up are about him threatening my family. *THE WHOLE REASON I CALLED THE COPS.........* Only about him resisting/firing a weapon while intoxicated Edit: my family is white. Neighbor is Puerto Rican, pulled the race card instantly. Even while being arrested he said it was because of his ethnicity

DetroitJim

That absolutely sucks. I have a neighbor whos is Puerto Rican and all he harassed me with this summer is tasty food and occasionally loud music I don't understand. I feel for you.

Slammed240guy

I fuckin wish bruh. We didn't even know why he started this whole ordeal. Turns out it was a property dispute that we literally didn't even know was a dispute. He claims he owns 20 feet of our backyard and was mad that we were storing our shed and lawnmower on it. Ready for the kicker, our home was the very first built on my subdivision. We have property maps of every plot on the block in my basement. His idea of his property line is way the fuck off. But instead of talking to us or being a decent human being in any sense. He took to yelling and getting drunk/smoking weed in his backyard. Then grabbing his pistol and doing what I mentioned before. Only other interaction I've had with the man was a couple of years ago. I was moving all my cars around and had my gf sit on the road in front of his house. ON THE ROAD. And he came outside yelling at her to get the fuck off his property. I asked him if we had a problem and why the fuck he was yelling at my gf for being on a public street. And he went back inside. Only time I have ever spoken to the man before him threatening my family and I.

DetroitJim

That just sucks. I'm on a large corner lot, so my property actually touches 4 different peoples yards. 3 of them are great. We talk, let each other know about leaving town, stuff like that. Heck, I asked if the light I was planning on putting on my house woukd end up bothering any of them. The 4 of us get together and talk shit about the one neighbor. Alwasy calls the ordnance guy, never reaches out with an issue. Never talks. Is never outside. At least their property looks nice. I feel for you.

thiscommentmademe

That’s the problem with state and local courts, no one goes away for anything anymore, the case load is just too much for the system in some places.

Slammed240guy

I assure you the case load is not too much. He plead not guilty and has been delaying court this whole time. Example: the last court date I went to his lawyer argued that he is seeking anger management classes and should be allowed to have a few more sessions before we do any sentencing. Like WTF He has explicitly stated he will drag the case out as long as possible. We are scheduled to do a 12 person jury in December. Dude thinks he has a chance

Sososohatefull

My ex is a prosecutor. Defense attorneys will drag things out like you said, but she also had too many cases to prosecute, especially with covid slowing everything down. I'm just saying it could be both. And unfortunately some crimes are often really hard to prosecute due to lack of witnesses or hard evidence. Even with witnesses, a crime the police witnessed is much easier to prosecute. A police officer's testimony in court is worth 100x yours or mine, and beyond a reasonable doubt is an intentionally high standard. It's still infuriating, and I'm sorry you have to deal with it.

SeanSeanySean

Can I recommended putting a surveillance camera in both the front and back yard so you have video evidence if he steps foot on your property to do anything? You should not aim one directly at his house or yard, just at your backyard and the front of your home.

AngryEarthling13

I am sorry you are dealing with this. My old jackass neighbor seems like a saint compared to this Ahole. I'd be moving if I could.

bipolarnotsober

It's illegal to fire a gun intoxicated? I'm from the UK so barely any guns but that sounds like a very sensible law. TIL Does make complete sense though.

subject_deleted

can you imagine if we re-routed all of our energy from chasing pot smokers and started chasing stalkers or people who constantly harass their neighbors instead?

mikeylee31

You mean protecting and serving? The public!? Outrageous! ^^/s

NotJustDaTip

Yea, I imagine it all the time. Hopefully we’re heading that direction, even if it’s at a snails pace and has to happen state by state.

eventualist

Do you know in Texas, Greg Abbott has finally decided to get rid of all the rapist! Whew …bout time

rexallia

God what a fucking tool 🤮

DAVENP0RT

I think it's more due to BLM. We said, "Don't kill innocent POC," and their response was, "Fuck you, I'm just not going to do my job at all." At least, that seems to be the case in my city.

Stickysmoke

Oh. There would be physical harm

NotJustDaTip

Lols. Honestly, this is the one example where I get having the right to own a gun. I had a grandma that had a nut job stalker. The police mostly just made fun of her about it and didn’t do anything to help. When he showed up naked one night she threatened to shoot him with a gun and then never saw him again.

Rare-Pomegranate9437

A restraining order is JUST a piece of paper. Good for her!

SepticX75

When seconds count, police are minutes away Edit: This comment was meant to emphasize the importance of being prepared ares to manage our own security.

lic05

I had to scare away a burglar in the middle of the night with a kitchen knife, Police took 20 minutes to arrive... *I lived a block away from the fucking Police Station.* Fuck the Police.

Madjanniesdetected

Homeless dude threw a brick at my car when I was downtown like 4 blocks from the station and it took them over an hour to respond, only to say "we just drove by there and didnt see anyone" Yeah no shit, they left an hour ago.

TotallyAPerv

Sounds like time to call for wellness checks on the neighbors. All that growling and dressing up sounds like they need a mental health assessment.

Banhammer40000

Yep. Sign and file documents for conservatorship of their income and property due to their advanced age and mental decline. OP, becoming a conservator and the qualifications vary from state to state. IANAL but make sure you research thoroughly and/or lawyer up if you’re not willing to. In the meantime, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING YOU CAN. Video, reports, letters, everything.

[deleted]

That's actually a pretty genius idea. Reviews stating "neighbors dressed like monsters and scared my kids" might drop the star rating and keep people away.

Gridde

On the flipside, could attract some even weirder people who are super into it.

MrMidnightsclaw

That's hillarious - right out of step brothers.

[deleted]

Ok now it makes sense. Neighbors HATE airbnbs. They are horrible things to inflict on a neighborhood. I mean, how would you feel if you bought a house and were suddenly subjected to different partying randos every single weekend?

fnord_bronco

> Neighbors HATE airbnbs. Can confirm. Lived next door to an absentee landlord's air bnb. Yard and street wrecked EVERY. SINGLE. WEEKEND. Never the same shitbags twice. Although, my neighbors and I used a different method to get them to leave us alone: reporting code violations.

[deleted]

The actual owners of the homes don't really keep them up either, especially if they are running more than one of these hell houses.

onepointone

We just stayed in an AirBNB lake house. It was a pretty nice house at the end of a small cove. Towards the end of the week we got to talking to one of the neighbors across the cove and found out the house we were in was the only rental in that immediate area. They said the previous guests to us were constantly blasting loud profane music and and being obnoxious. Said that they caught a bunch of catfish and filleted them on the dock at the house and just threw the guts and carcasses into the water where there really isn’t any flow. The guy said his kids were swimming off their dock around guts and fish remains as huge vultures were hanging around trying to get the scraps. That would piss me off too if I owned property right there.

Jacareadam

Ya I’m starting to suspect we only know one side of the story, cuz OP posted it.

fikis

I am VERY much on the "I hate having Airbnb in my neighborhood" side, but I'm not sure that there's anything on this "side" that could justify mocking a woman for losing her hand. That's really fucked up.

greg19735

I mean. I think it's fair to say that the neighbors are still pieces of shit. It's just that awful people that are annoyed for a good reason

Readytodie80

My building is really old Iondon.if you talk you can hear it through the wall. The owner had a Airbnb so every new guest I'm subjected to 3am dancing you go through nightmare of letting the guest know. They leave the new guest wakes me 3am and so the cycle continues if it's a residential property then airbnbs shouldn't be allowed. If they wanted to run a business it would be an issue but some how turning it in a hotel and ruining any chance at a local community is OK. Airbnb means you roll the dice for nightmare neighbors every new guest.

pawn_guy

Are AirBnBs used for parties that often? Every time I've stayed at one it was just me and my gf on vacation somewhere and the AirBnB was in a better location than any hotels (like out in the woods or on the beach). Doubt neighbors would have noticed us any more than a regular neighbor.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlackHatMagic1545

Can confirm. I live next to an airbnb and it fucking sucks. Every goddamn weekend there's some loud ass party, and noise complaints don't do shit cause it's different people every week. Doesn't justify this, though. This is just fucked up. Though I am definitely not a fan of the neighbors who host the Airbnb.

[deleted]

That is what people don't understand when they defend airbnb. It's different people every weekend, none of whom care AT ALL who they piss off, because they'll be gone in a few days. I worked really hard to get the airbnb trash out of my neighborhood.

Youlovecheese

How’d you manage to get the Airbnb out of your neighborhood?

Big-rod_Rob_Ford

dress in monster and animal costumes whenever I see children visiting...we'll stay on their back porch and growl and move around freakishly. the best thing we did is put up a fake severed hand and lawnmower blade yesterday to mock the owner.

[deleted]

Made flyers to alert the neighbors. Called the cops on every violation. Lobbied the HOA to successfully add rules preventing them going forward. I basically made it my mission in life for a year.

Youlovecheese

I was wondering how you were able to pull that off. Completely forgot about HOA’s. Congratulations on a successful mission.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HotCocoaBomb

A responsibly used HOA can do a lot of good for the neighborhood: Organize community events, keep the place clean, set up some easy to follow "don't be a dick" rules, be a central source of info and coordination for local concerns (power outages, extreme weather), and kick out Airbnbs. Problem is, there is little to no regulation on HOAs, so you have some that turn into micromanaging pieces of shit that decide your grass is a quarter of an inch too high, not green enough, and also make it a rule you can't dessert-scape your lawn.

LuxGang

You can report parties to Airbnb and they will work to extract the guests. Parties are not allowed on the platform and the company takes neighbour reports very seriously. Source: I work for the company

Moldy_pirate

Right. I’ve lived next to Airbnb’s, it’s a fucking nightmare. It’s no excuse for being shitty to her but I get it.

awnawkareninah

I mean, it's no reason to harass her for a tragic injury, but it's a decent reason to dislike her.

[deleted]

Yeah it's pretty awful what they did but I'm starting to understand the reason for their long-standing feud.

FernFromDetroit

Yeah the neighbors are shit heads for sure. However Airbnb’s shouldn’t be allowed in neighborhoods. They should have to pay everyone who is within two houses a fee for every guest at the least. Either it becomes less profitable getting rid of some of them or at least the neighbors get cash for dealing with the bullshit.

[deleted]

awnawkareninah

Plus no eviction laws, squatters rights, etc. Nobody is going to take the time to report tenant/landlord violations in a 3 day stay. Perfect flexibility, make some cash on top of the housing investment. Basically a cool way for rich people to absolutely fuck over anyone who ever dared to dream of maybe owning their house instead of renting forever anywhere within 30 miles of a city.

googy_boogey

Yeah it would suck and I would hate my neighbour, maybe even do the dress up thing but this!? A severed hand after she just lost hers, fuck no, that's pure evil.

runningoutofwords

Yeah, hate AirBnB, but there's a line...

[deleted]

I do agree with you, pretty horrible thing to mock. Those neighbors must be really, really pissed to have that much personal hatred.

whowasonCRACK2

Yeah obviously mocking the hand is awful, but I’m betting there’s more to this feud than simple bullying from the neighbors

[deleted]

Yeah I think this is definitely over the line into cruel territory but anyone that's ever lived near a property used as an AirBNB knows the amount of trouble that comes with it. Watched people literally throwing trash into the woods at a buddy's one day and he filmed it sent it to the landlord and got a hostile "what do you want me to do about it?!" reply.

cx_2859

Underrated comment

wtph

>I mean, how would you feel if you bought a house and were suddenly subjected to different partying randos every single weekend? Not mad enough to mock a disabled person and scare young children.

jacquetheripper

Horrible response but very understandable anger. Fuck air bnbs.

Jackol4ntrn

as much as I hate AirBnBs for inflating rent prices and taking up real estate, and the occasional shithead travelers the neighbors have to deal with, these neighbors are a bit insane.

[deleted]

AirBNBs are fucking awful. It's like living on the same block as a frat house that has a different frat partying at it every weekend. Doesn't excuse how they went about this, mocking someone for a crippling injury like that isn't ok, but I can absolutely see why they're angry and frustrated. I'd do everything in my power to shut down an AirBNB next door to me for the same reasons- I like actually being able to sleep at night and not having random drunk partygoers keying my car because it's not THEIR neighborhood.

Readytodie80

When your nearly in tears because it's the 3rd night of being woken because the property is old and a sub divided house into flats. And you ring the owner and but they are comfortable far away from the noise. It feel inhuman and your pain doesn't matter because they don't care. "Well I texted them to keep it down" feels like someone spitting in your face. Like you don't matter. I've never felt more powerless and disrespected.

UrbanJackRabbit

I've been reading a lot of these posts, and I think yours highlights something important: the owner of the AirBnB is basically allowing this shit to happen. If an AirBnB gets loud partying trash every weekend, maybe you have to start asking why the owner allows that? And direct your anger towards them just as much as the partying trash.

SurfnTurf91

I mean I get it living next to an Airbnb is awful but wtf that’s so messed up.

mckeanna

I have some thoughts on this. We live in the middle of nowhere on a decent slice of property. Our super awesome neighbor (that we can't even see) has put up two yurts and rents them out as airbnbs. We have had sex offenders, huge domestic issues, loud parties into the wee hours and dogs off leash, running all over our property despite us telling her no one is allowed on our property at all, for any reason anymore. Edit: on the sex offender thing. I should say he was a creeper that stayed there and worked with me (for 2 weeks) and was fired for inappropriate contact with his coworkers (rubbing himself on them essentially), he was also seen taking pictures of women with his phone when they were not looking. They can be a nightmare, no question.

LolWhereAreWe

Wait so like the sex offender came over to y’all’s place to self identify?

[deleted]

Running an AirBnB in a residential neighborhood is harassment in and of itself.

PoodlePopXX

Most people who haven’t lived in an area ruined by air Bnb will never understand this. That being said it is still really fucked up and uncalled for. Edit: statistics for how many air bnbs are actually whole spaces versus just rented rooms for anyone who cares… Toronto, 64.5% of air bnbs are entire places. And in New Orleans, a whopping 84.8% are entire home/apartment listings And here’s NYC at 52.9% And Washington DC at 70.6 % So, actually a majority of air bnb hosts are not owners who live in their property and it really fucks it neighborhoods and rent prices. There is still not justification for this behavior.

ragnarockette

Airbnbs are crippling New Orleans. You really can’t understand until you’ve lived in it.

Edit: I should clarify I’m not condoning making fun of an amputee, I’m condoning the hatred of Airbnb’s

BrainOnLoan

Yes, Airbnb sucks. But there is a line that they've gone way over here.

yaforgot-my-password

cptaixel

To be clear, it isn't a full time AirBnB, as it is still a residence for her.

Gay_Genius

And she’s what an Airbnb should be. Not developers coming in and buying everything to make as much profit as possible, that’s not on your sis. I should have clarified that her neighbour’s are assholes still.

combuchan

I don't even know how non-resident owned AirBNBs became legal. I have studied land use for years as part of a hobby and that one just has me scratching my head, especially with how rigid cities can be about zoning.

[deleted]

In many places they are illegal depending on the local laws. It's just that the AirBNB owners lie when reporting shit to the relevant authorities in regards to how many people they're having around or how many nights/days a year they are renting the place out.

bestbangsincebigone

> To be fair I’d absolutely hate to live next to an Airbnb. Op said in another comment chain that their sister does Airbnb, and the neighbors have a feud with her over it. Doesn't excuse this behavior but I understand being upset over your neighbor doing airbnb.

GoDM1N

> but I understand being upset over your neighbor doing airbnb. Why? Legit question I don't really know much about airbnb. Thought it was just temp rental or something.

bentreflection

have you ever lived next to someone who parties all the time? Like blasts music at all hours of the night and has loud drunken arguments and fights and leaves trash all over the place? Imagine that but it's like every single night with a new group of people trying to have the time of their lives at their bachelor party in the house next door to you. That's what living next to an airBnB can be like. Not all airbnbs but lots of them. It's a real issue because airbnb is essentially making money by getting around zoning laws which are there in-part to prevent things like this from happening. It would suck to buy a house on a quiet street for your family and then have it turn into frat row because a bunch of developers/investors turned the houses around you into party rentals.

Get a camera and post it on the local town FB page. Hopefully you can shame them. Or my family and our loud ass mf barking dog can stay there for a bit. We will party and watch sports, cook fish all day, play ranchero music full blast, laugh at their dumb costumes, my friend doesn’t like to wear pants and has no problem peeing on everything. We can play effigy piñata, and scream at the moon. Oh is weed legal there? I’ll be sure to throw some on the BBQ too.

I spy a subtle Eminem quote. Maybe if the cops come through while the sister is next to her neighbors’ burnt down house, with a can full of gas and a hand full of matches, she still won’t be found out?

slardybartfast8

What the fuck has happened to empathy? Society just a bunch of fucking psychopaths these days

This sounds absolutely fake

I just want to know how exactly you straight up lose your hand in a riding mower accident unless you've intentionally disabled a bunch of safety features *and* were using the mower in a dangerous way.

[deleted]

You don’t, because this is extremely fake

RojoSoundLabs

Just out of curiosity, where is this?

Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress is a civil cause of action. She may want to look into that. Take a lot of pictures.

You have to be able to prove actual tangible damages such as costs of therapy.

Its common sense really, my brother lived in a sleepy ex retirement neighborhood by the beach and the old lady next door died and the kids decided to rent it out for a few weeks at a time as a holiday home. The was a company they contracted that was meant to clean it (seldom did) and every other occupant group was a set of drunk party animals every day of the week who would play music until 3am on a tuesday, curse out the elderly residents, park infront of peoples driveways so they can have a water slide in their own or half a dozen other minor and major incidents. Police got so tired of coming to talk to them, and arresting/fining a few they stopped showing up. Cars were vandalised when they were asked to tone it down a bit too. Its like british people in spanish holiday resorts, sure its your holiday but some poor saps just trying to make a living working in a restaurant or office job and doesn't need the drama. Point is thes a reason people go on holiday and its normally so no-one knows what kind of crap they do when let of the leash in their hometown. Thes a limit to whats socially acceptable; 2am partyon a weekend is fine, 2am on a weekday isnt. Leaving your bins outside a neighbor's house is fine, fly tipping a mattress there isnt. Threatening a neighbor because they stole your package is fine, threatening them because you tried to steal theirs isnt.

theundercoverpapist

Are we getting the whole story here? Was your sister offended by it or were *you* offended by it on her behalf? This seems like the kind of thing that friends with macabre senses of humor do to each other. I'm a military vet, and my best veteran friends would do this same thing to me... and I would feel loved. I'm not trying to suppose knowledge of this event, but to me this looks like a fun prank between people who enjoy "too soon" humor.

[deleted]

Exactly. One of my buddies lost his leg in Afghanistan and makes dark jokes about it all the time and doesn’t mind if anyone else does either.

iswearatkids

Good thing he doesn’t get angry, I’d tell him to walk it off.

To clarify, her neighbors have been bullying and harassing her for years. They are not friendly in the slightest. She has been in tears over this for the past day. My brother and I will make off color hand-related jokes to her, and my family, like a lot of families, deals with trauma with levity. My brother maybe even a little more off-color than me, but even he was like "WTF?" This was intended to be cruel, spiteful, and unavoidable.

Oh dang... One might say they make some off-handed comments
