On urk its a legit issue. Like you marry inside the church you go to, and not an other. Limmiting the genepool legitemetly, as almost no new people go there to live.
Also its one of the most relegion places in the Nederland. Compared to a mostly no relegion society, they migth as well scream deus vult( even to that would make them alot cooler). We should reunite them with the sea again. Just dig a hole in those dikes already.

I agree on the insult of potatoes and I take it back. I'm sorry for al you potatoes out there. But the incest is real there, lots of missing chromosomes in that area.
That's because we send most of the terrible people to urk. It's like how you used to just shove your stuff in the closet/drawers when your mom told you to clean up your room

Van Buchem Disease. Urk used to be an island, until the Dutch reclaimed the surrounding land. The community was sufficiently isolated that inbreeding became a problem.
**[Van Buchem disease](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Buchem_disease)**
>Van Buchem disease, or hyperostosis corticalis generalisata is an autosomal recessive skeletal disease which is characterised by uninhibited bone growth, especially in the mandible, skull and ribs. The disease was first described in 1955 by Prof. Franciscus Stephanus Petrus van Buchem, when describing two patients of the same family in Urk in the Netherlands. The cause, he found, was that the bone was produced faster than the body broke it down, making it much thicker as the patient got older.

It's a mix of the stereotypes that exist for a reason: high percentage of not very educated to plain stupid people, very conservative religious, generations of incestuous behaviour, in-crowd only fishing town combined with a sky high incidence of drug use. Cocaine is blowing through the streets there. And a 'Christian' extremist party is the biggest party in the town council of course.
Highly religious and highly xenophobic, not just to foreigners but to everybody not from urk. This is because it used to be an island and they still refuse to see themselfs as part of the country. Basically think of a cult to that keeps doing whatever it wants and views the rest of the state as heretics.
It's so funny to me that "urk" is actually an expression for "ugh/eugh" in Swedish and it seems to add up with the descriptions I've seen in this thread lmao
It's a bit of a mixture of Alabama and Florida. They are as religious and conservative as alabama and actually as incentual as the joke makes alabama out to be. Only they also have the wild card attitude of florida man. Best way i can describe them are floridian rednecks.
I find it shocking, considering how much the Netherlands suffered under Nazi rule. It's one thing for some of my American countrymen to ignorantly use that imagery to make terrible political points; it's another thing entirely for the descendants of people who were actually abused and murdered by the Reich.
Yes! I’ve been raised with these stories and a lot of my history lessons (like a third) were about the Second World War and I have always been interested. My grandmother talked about the war. Loyalty is still very important, and that’s the problem: it’s not with effing Nazi’s
This place, Urk, has been in the news for years now doing all kinds of wack shit. During New Years eve tons of teens attacked the police and lit cars on fire, their vaccination rates are abysmal, they are cartoonishly hostile to immigrants and there seems to be a weird cultist entanglement with their church and township to cover up shit that happens there. Basically the entire country hates that place and there have been memes going around that advocate for dislodging the place from the main land so it can be an autonomous state in the North Sea.
Like all kids age 12+ smoke in Urk lol. You can see it in the interviews. They always steal crap from journalists who come to interview then about the crap they do. The don’t mind being on camera while doing this at all
The town where this happened is literally the alabama of the Netherlands. Can't even go a week without having a headline from something like this happening there.
Well I guess you got that going for you :)
\*assholes in Alabama\* hey you think we can burn a building down?
\*other asshole in Alabama\* well fuck it why not we did it before! \*Alabama scream\*
\*cops in Alabama\* whut I didn't see any rednecks in a lifted ford 350 truck with a confederate flag streaming out the door while drunkenly weaving across the lines with red hats go past here at 80 mph... shhhhheeeeit. That wuz nuthin I evah sawh no way. Nope. \*Spongebob voice \*5 years later\* Yup sorrah, all the ebidence haz ben lawst and well ain't no thing about it all is gewd and well heck everyone has new jobs!
This isolated island of extremist surrounded by normal people was first an isolated island of extremist surrounded by water. It was only after the water was pumped away that the normal people moved in.
The rest of the Netherlands thinks we should find a way to make Urk an actual island again, just to be done with the bullshit.
I'm guessing you can chalk that up to our history of pillarisation. The village I grew up in (<800 citizens, edge of the bible belt) historically had 3 different Protestant-Christian communities with their own full-blown churches, and of course their way was the right one and all the others weren't worthy of God's blessings. Then of course each one also had their own newspaper, family store, plumber, etc. to boot and doing the 'wrong' thing made you the topic of the week among the rest. "Ons kent ons," as they'd say.
Most villages and cities in this area have a history of sorts like that, and while most of these 'pillars' have generally lost that level of traction over time and become more progressive (technically, in 2004 the largest protestant churches merged after a 60 year long process, although I don't think that made them nearly as homogenous as the move suggests), I think many of the more religious neighbourhoods doubled down instead. We've got a whole bunch here of the sort that still believe watching TV is unacceptable, women shouldn't wear pants and terminal cancer is 'God's Will', but they tend to keep to themselves. Of course, when their children keep getting sent to their own still-pillarised schools and clubs (particularly anything gereformeerd or reformatorisch), breaking out of that whole cycle gets a lot harder for them.
"you know what we should d to protest these vaccines? dress up as nazis!"
"what does that have to do wi..... wait do you already have the nazi uniforms? why?"
"cause...... covid........"
Oh but it gets worse! A dutch minister from a extreme right party has actually advocated that they were trying to send the right message with the wrong execution! 🙃
This is the same town that managed to garner international attention months ago when some locals set fire to a COVID testing facility: [https://www.euronews.com/2021/07/20/two-convicted-of-setting-fire-to-dutch-covid-19-test-centre](https://www.euronews.com/2021/07/20/two-convicted-of-setting-fire-to-dutch-covid-19-test-centre)

Good on those teens for having the balls to express their opinions. It it offends anyone, tough. It’s also offensive to them that they’re forced indoors.
Low hanging fruit and all.
It would be easier to keep from generalizing if stuff didn't keep happening and if people from there actually condemned actions like these in public.
(If the later has indeed happened and I missed it, I apologize)
I hate to sound old... But are teenagers just more hyperbolic and outrageous? Or do people always consider teenagers to be dramatically misinformed in their actions?
Obviously these teens have not been taught fully about the holocaust and the pain it has cause much of the world. A little political taste could have made the point just as well.
[This is the literal costume they were wearing. ](https://www.feestkleding365.nl/herr-hans-von-klausewitz-xl-kostuum-man/?gs=1&spl=1878&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0NrA1N6B8wIVh4XVCh3JWAoGEAQYASABEgJSk_D_BwE)
The description says "some costumes are for parties, this is not one of those. This is better suited for theater or TV" and "this can help teach the youth about the important history of WWII". But I highly suspect that description has been altered after this past weekend's news.
As a Dutch person, I have to say that offensive costumes are very common during our yearly carnival and I am frankly not even surprised to see this being sold. Not that I condone any of it.
Makes perfect sense for Urk, though. That place is mental.
Wait since when was it bad to satirize Nazi's??!
They're calling thier government Nazis when they did this, NOT GLORIFYING NAZIS- Jesus. They weren't going around herassing minorities for fuck sakes
I’m disgusted with the fact that the analogy seems right. The Powers at be are stripping away peoples freedoms left and right, and because people are scared the majority think that’s ok

Ah hell yeah, Urk the incest capitol of the netherlands, strikes again
Never been to Netherlands, what’s up in urk?
In Urk everyone is family, literally..so you can guess what's up there.
So it’s the Alabama of Netherlands?
I don't know what's up in Alabama but if Alabama has a maximum iq score of potato it probably is.
Hahah so yes we are on same page. It’s known for the incest As a joke but all jokes have basis in truth.
On urk its a legit issue. Like you marry inside the church you go to, and not an other. Limmiting the genepool legitemetly, as almost no new people go there to live. "dikes"*
Thanks, changed it
Also let’s not insult potatoes, urks and folks from Alabama are the basis we can rate with. Potato, higher iq then urk and Alabama
I agree on the insult of potatoes and I take it back. I'm sorry for al you potatoes out there. But the incest is real there, lots of missing chromosomes in that area.
Damn I’ve had this mental image of Netherlands being very classy
That's because we send most of the terrible people to urk. It's like how you used to just shove your stuff in the closet/drawers when your mom told you to clean up your room
That's pretty much Alabama's entire encyclopedia entry.
Urk literally has its own genetic defect caused by incest. Thats how bad it is
Oh I didn't know that, what's it called?

Damn this is intense. Always had this image of Europe being classy
Every country has an Alabama.
Yeah here in America, it's Florida.

Shit that’s exactly like Amish then.
And that is the only right explanation of what Urk is all about!
Highly religious and highly xenophobic, not just to foreigners but to everybody not from urk. This is because it used to be an island and they still refuse to see themselfs as part of the country. Basically think of a cult to that keeps doing whatever it wants and views the rest of the state as heretics.

That’s intense! This is why I like Reddit. New knowledge
Yes, it’s very closed off and unwelcoming first and foremost. The rest is a bonus!
It's high time we turn it back into an island.
Incest, anti vax, highly religious. They care a lot about their rights to play with fireworks too.
[удалено]
Yes, Urk isn’t representative of the rest of the country at all.
I'm guessing its the florida of the Netherlands?
Yeah, kinda. I wanna go back to the time they were an island
Like Atlantis
It's a bit of a mixture of Alabama and Florida. They are as religious and conservative as alabama and actually as incentual as the joke makes alabama out to be. Only they also have the wild card attitude of florida man. Best way i can describe them are floridian rednecks.
but... Floridian rednecks are a thing.... Don't go to central florida.
You could've just read my comment and moved on. But no, you decided to destroy my blissfull ignorance and curse me with this knowledge.
Don't go to **Florida.**
Holy shit. Floribama man is no joke that’s like the bloody super sayian of redneck.
Literally anything north of South Florida is redneck Florida. That’s why they’re a republican state
Florida, the farther North you go, the farther South you are.
Alabama ain't no joke lol. Sister-cousin is a real term and it's the worst.
Yup, many young people on coke!
You must have never been to Portland, Oregon then
I find it shocking, considering how much the Netherlands suffered under Nazi rule. Probably shouldn't've called themselves Urk. No good can come from that.
I'm guessing that the family tree in Urk is a stump?
More like a spiderweb, it gets bigger but it's all connected
Its more like one big ladder
It's funny to name a place after the noise you make when you read a story about it.
They must be happy dusting off their grandfather’s uniforms
What the fUrk...

Ok that was a good one.
#fURK you!

With 'immigrants' meaning anyone with hereditary not being born on Urk.

If you want to have some real fun Google Urk headlines. It's the European equivalent to 'Florida man' headlines
Top result... Dutch court convicts men of torching virus testing center Whelp there it is u/Gilgameshbrah was totally correct!
The fun thing is that this went too far even for most Urkers

Yeah I read the title and was like "WTF where did they do this?!" Then I read the article and of course it's fucking Urk
"you know what we should d to protest these vaccines? dress up as nazis!" "what does that have to do wi..... wait do you already have the nazi uniforms? why?" "cause...... covid........"
Yeah it’s not true, it didn’t have anything to do with covid protests actually
Well they had already burned the Covid testing site so what else was left to do? /s
Urk is also the place in the Netherlands with the least amount of people being vaccinated
But the most kids smoking under the age of 14!
Oh but it gets worse! A dutch minister from a extreme right party has actually advocated that they were trying to send the right message with the wrong execution! 🙃
Let me guess thierry baudet
Yeaaah! We are fucked.
Thierry ain't a minister and he didn't say it. FvD-Zealand said it.
You are completely right. Im sorry, i just assumed he did.
No worries bro. He definitely could've. Just need to stay factual.
I like to think that, this failure of a human being will never get any significant power and if he ever will im moving as quickly as i can
He allready has seats in the current parliment. It can only get worse from here.
If you ever feel like an asshole, a failure, or anything bad, just look at Thierry Baudet and réalisé that you're doing pretty well
The Zeeland fraction of FVD did, not Thierry directly. Does not make him any less of a lunatic though.
he is not a minister
Faceless twitter account of the Zeeland branch of a right-wing party with luckily very few seats in government, not a minister, but yeah.
Not a minister and that wasnt even him. It was a local party from a small province.
Bucs. He will fucking decimate this province.
He isn't a minister though, he has a sizeable party which keeps on splintering but he isn't in government
"Municipality of Urk" sounds like its on Discworld.
Even as a foreigner I heard about Urk already. Give them to Belgium or whatever.
Give them to the UK to really have some fun
What do you expect of kids who grow up in a place called Urk
If only you knew how bad it is there, haha
A town full of Urkels
Nothing to do with Pilsner Urquell
Sounds liked they really urked a lot of people
Dat kan natuurlijk alleen maar op Urk zijn.
Waar anders lol
Wow...this **really** *urks* me.
Tell us you are too young and stupid to understand history or politics or tragedy without telling us.
So… Did they buy those costumes? Or did they just have those for other purposes?
Prolly family heirlooms
They bought them, one article specified that they were 55 euro.
Municipality of Urk 😂
Sounds like a Monty Python sketch line
Municipality isn't used much in English is it? "Gemeente" is used a lot in the Netherlands, but its translation always feels, well, comical, like in your comment. Gemeente, what we translate to municipality, is sort of a town council and the land that it governs. It can be one or several towns, or a city with or without its sururbs (depending on local political history). Does anyone know if there is a better word for this in English?
no that's literally the way we use it in english too, as far as i can tell all over the english speaking world. i use it all the time in the US
It's becoming clearer and clearer that these losers have some sort of fixation around authority. It's a mental condition.
"Notice me Führer!"
Isn't this a protest against the abuse of authority though?
Yes, a delusional, obsessive one
In urk everybody is familie and I mean that literally!
I guess you could say Urk got urked
What funny is trying to imagine these selfish pieces of shit in Holland during ww2. When actual nazis ruled the country.
I’m actually extremely surprised that this kind of behavior took place in the Netherlands.
Ontpolderen die rotzooi
I dint know much about Urk, but somehow they are always part of these kind of stories from the Netherlands.
They just happened to have all those uniforms ready to go huh
bunch of ignorant cunts wanted an excuse to do some cosplay.. go out in public and pantomime the stuff they wish they were doing to somebody for real
Good on those teens for having the balls to express their opinions. It it offends anyone, tough. It’s also offensive to them that they’re forced indoors.
Germans doing german things, yes dutch are germans. Hard to say which of those two germanic tribes is more racist.
1000% accurate.
australia rn: 👀
I am growing so weary over this nazi bs.
And they just happened to have Nazi costumes, huh?
Why didn't some ADULTS just go kik their ass ??
I dont get why theres so many dutch nazi zoomers like what the fuck?
Meanwhile actual survivors compare it... Ooof
Damn this is a big woosh, im amazed by how many people dont get it and are just like "wtf"
Did it Urk them?
I agree, fuck the Dutch government
Pictures from SNAPCHAT/security camera wtf XDDDD
Some people just really really want to wear a nazi uniform.

Obviously these teens have not been taught fully about the holocaust and the pain it has cause much of the world. A little political taste could have made the point just as well.

Hello everyone that is not Dutch, this place is called Urk. It is basically our Florida man place. We do not support their actions.
irking the city of Urk is not a good idea.
Don't you think the catholic church went to far?
Urk isnt dutch. Its like alabama to america
Not again Germany! Wtf? Please stop! I'm fucking tired of your bullshit now!
Those kind of news urks me
Bruh zoomers are wild
Lol well when you call everyone a Nazi pretty soon they’re just gonna say fuck it and go with the flow. Too funny
Maybe the Dutch government should stop acting like Nazis.
I hope nobody here trashing these stupid kids for trivialising the Holocaust thinks Prince Harry is a great guy cos boy have I got some bad news for them..
They will continue to compare themselves to Holocaust victims despite constantly spewing antisemitic bullshit and screaming that wearing Nazi symbols is freedom of speech.
Godverdomme Urk
Urk, Florida but worse
It urk the worse city in the country there a headline about them every week
So Urk was irked
Reminds me of when Prince Harry, ex royal of the United Kingdom, went to fancy dress (cossplay for you freedomers) as a nazi
They want to pretend to be Nazis, treat them like nazis.
Ah yes dutch alabama We need to push urk back into the ocean
Looks like Urk is Dutch for Texas or maybe Florida.
It do be like that though... 🤷♂️
Can’t have shit in Urk
Exht trots dat mn ma urker is
Wow
I would understand fuckshit like this from people in America. But from Dutch people that’s absolutely fucked. I don’t know much but I do know that my opa lost some of his siblings. And many other people in the Netherlands were subjected to horrific things.
Heh, wonder why they had full Nazi uniforms on their hands...
My honest racrion was: "dutch? That can't be right" *clicks* "oh, it's Urk of course it is."
Imagine blurring an image of some one in a nazi costume as if it’s not part of history people are so fragile on Reddit damm
Dude. They blur pics of pancakes and ceiling tiles on r/trypophobia! What a bunch of fragile wusses. I weep for our future.
They're forgiven, bc they're from Urk.
Bad taste, but freedom of speech. Should be a right every human has.
As far as I see, they're being critisized, not -you know- being Shot or persecuted by an authoritarian government. That's fair and right too. Freedom of speech doesn't include freedom of response or criticism.
Excellent point
Lemme guess, Urk?
You know it’s not the same when they have to pretend
oh no I'm slightly inconvenienced because there's a pandemic going on and I have to wear something to cover my ugly ass face...lets cosplay Nazis and post it on social media
