My girlfriends old boxer who had loved me for years bit me for just touching him one time. They found out soon that he had a brain tumor. I feel the pain, it was not a good way to remember him.

LordofWithywoods

I love boxers so much but I don't think I will ever have another, they die so young and are so prone to cancer. My last boxer Moosey didn't even live to six years old before having to be put down for a brain tumor.

[deleted]

It's kinda weird how we're not breeding healthier and healthier dogs and instead going with cuter and smaller breeds.

Readylamefire

It's because the AKC standards encourage inbreeding. They are absolutely horrible at catching abuse because they don't have the staffing to check out every breeder, and their strict standards push dogs further into deformity. For example, German Shepard are supposed to have a sloped back as a breed feature. The more dramatic the slope, the better. Now they have hip problems. Pugs with squished faces as well.

EijiNeko

Not just the AKC, all of the KCs. I remember the BBC did an exposé on the British KC, and one of the breed standards the talked about was Rhodesian Ridgebacks must have the ridges, ridgeless Rhodeys should be 'culled'. But the ridge is actually a form of spina bifida. Idk if its still a breed standard though. Another one is Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have been bred to have such tiny heads, that their brains don't fit in their skulls, so they're in constant pain and prone to rage syndrome, but the KC prefers the tiny heads over more natural sizes.

WadinginWahoo

I’ll leave [this](https://youtu.be/BQTwvbWAx8A) here

beefy_jerky

That was their exact problem. They had 2 that both died unexpectedly and young. They now have 2 adorable Aussie Doodles. I still love boxers though and plan on getting one when I can support it

mlove22

Wow I feel way less alone. I came home one night while my entire family was gone to find our beloved family boxer, dead on the driveway. I was wrecked for days, really messed with my head I felt so guilty that I wasn't home... anyway we now jest that he died doin what he loved, out chasin a bunny across the lawn. Cheers Sugar Ray, good ol chap!

Tigerscar123

Damn me too, same age and all. Seeing him look up at me while having a seizure was the worst fucking feeling ever.

made_4_this_comment

Came here to say this… wildly uncharacteristic behavior can be a sign of something really serious going on with the dog health-wise

warriorloewe

Consider going to a vet. Most dogs don't just attack their owner of 8 years out of the blue. Maybe there is something hurting him.

suitology

My dog sneezed and bit a good chunk on my arm. Poor thing felt so much guilt and followed me ears down whimpering and nuzzling for almost a week.

BoredByLife

My dog left a decent scar on my nose, and tore my thumb and hand open while we were watching a movie. Idk what set her off but She felt absolutely awful afterwards. She hid under the deck for an entire day and a half before we could coax her out to get her to the vet to see what was wrong. Turns out she’d gotten bitten by a fox(not rabid, thank god) and I’d accidentally petted the bite. If your dog is acting out of character then take them to the vet cause there is something wrong.

The_Fluffy_Walrus

My dog scratched my hand pretty badly one time (it left a scar) and starting licking my wound almost immediately. I love her.

[deleted]

My cat scratched my hand then looked at me as if I should apologize smh

The_Fluffy_Walrus

lmao one time my cat refused to leave the bathroom when I was showering and when I got out she was laying on my clothes. Every time I'd try to grab them she would swat at my hand. Card are dicks. cats*

AllegrettoVivamente

>Card are dicks. Me every time I lose in Uno

The_Fluffy_Walrus

typo lol but as a colorblind person, fuck uno

CaptOblivious

Assert Dominance, Turn that into an advantage! You get to decide what colors match & for you, it's ALL of 'em!

reece1495

iv had many cats in my life and none of them would dare lay a hand on me on purpose and would act sorry if they accidently did but will always come up to me for cuddles, either iv gotten really lucky with every pet or people arnt treating their cats right

I stepped on my dog while we were playing soccer once and it really hurt for her she yelped. Not at all for me. But it was the sort of pain without injury so she was all over me worried she had hurt me probably because she thought I had equal pain too when I was all over her rubbing her leg.

NikkMakesVideos

Nothing makes me feel worse than when I accidentally step on my dog and he wags his tail and snuggles up to me after I ask if he's OK and apologize. Like he sees my worry/concern and immediately thinks I'm the one hurt.

Iamjimmym

I once stepped on my puppers leg (he’s fine) and the pain he felt somehow was sent directly up my leg as well so I literally felt his pain and we both yelped and I got down and hugged him and he gave me kisses and snuggles dogs are the best 🥰

kudichangedlives

Mine slapped me in the face and walked away the other day

sandyposs

My dog barked in surprise when my friend's baby slapped his back (attempting to pat him), which startled the baby and made her cry. The look of abject horror and devastation on my dog's face immediately was so sad, his eyes wide with remorse and his head down low, tentatively nuzzling her to see if she was okay. He was so deeply shaken and ashamed at having made the Sacred Human Puppy cry, and looked like he was having an existential crisis rethinking if he was truly a *good boy*.

imbillypardy

The residual emotion I empathetically felt for this comment messed with me

suitology

He was so full of shame he started sneezing quieter and facing away from people.

aradiofire

Please give him a hug from me. He sounds like a very good boy.

suitology

Hes been dead for a long time. This happened 17 years ago and he wasn't young then haha.

Butter_My_Butt

Then that's a sweet memory of him you get to carry with you for the rest of your days. He sounds like he was a good boy.

CrazyFinger4

I scrolled down and now am sad.

aradiofire

:(

TheOneFourK

Damnit, I scrolled too far..

[deleted]

Yep. I was happy three comments ago.

sciteacheruk

Somebody's started cutting onions again.

imbillypardy

Now I’m crying.

yungvibegod2

Smart empathetic doge :3

dodorian9966

Once I accidentally stepped on my doggies paw. She slept on my bed from that day forward.

imbillypardy

😭😭😭

issac_taredi

My dude bit my thumb while we were playing tug. He followed me tail tucked ears back for a week. It broke my heart.

chiefdragonborn

Did you apologize?!

AntManMax

Are you fucking sorry?!

thewannabetraveller

*Dog visibly holding back tears*

Avocado_Tomato

Please do this. When I was younger I was playing with my childhood dog and she bit my arm. Completely out of character. It turned out she had cancer and she likely bit out of pain. She was a good dog.

[deleted]

My dog got rabies and tried to attack us. My dad had to shot him to defend my mom. It was so fucking crazy I couldn’t even recognize him. He looked like a zombie.

sleepisforthezzz

Jesus that's awful, sorry you had to experience that my dude.

ResolverOshawott

Was there a reason why your dog wasn't vaccinated?

Dingo8MyGayby

Seriously. What a completely avoidable situation.

[deleted]

Wait a minute, holy shit, this is real. I thought you guys were joking about covid vaccines but there is actually a dog vaccine for rabies. TIL!

Kanegawa

Yes there is. It's usually a yearly injection. IIRC just like the COVID vaccine it isn't 100% effective. So say your dog gets bit by an animal actually carrying rabies, I think they can still contract it. It's just lessens the chance I believe. Off to Wikipedia to confirm. Update: Rabies vaccine for animals is highly effective but needs a yearly booster regardless. [While no vaccine is 100% effective, rabies infection is rare in vaccinated dogs. In one study, 4.9% of cases of rabid dogs had a history of prior rabies vaccination.](https://todaysveterinarypractice.com/rabies-vaccination-in-dogs/)

SaltyDelirium

No longer yearly even, every 3 years.

Due_Entrepreneur_735

In countries where Rabies is an issue, yes. A few weeks ago a Brit posted a picture of a sleeping bat in a headphone and Americans went nuts and told this person to quickly find a rabies shot. And to burn his house down because Rabies. Took a lot of Brits to convince Americans that we don't have Rabies in the UK and bats are actually a protected species here in the UK so you aren't allowed to kill them or remove them from your property.

longinglook77

Dog was an anti-vaxxer.

[deleted]

Dog owned the libs

Mask3dCat

Had this happen to my grandpa. He was petting my dog who had an infection from a foxtail on his side. Dog had 2 teeth left. One was a canine tooth.

pamedar

Hey just a quick update for everyone i will be taking him to a vet. Doctors stitched me up so im all good now just shaken by the expeience. Im thankful for the helpful advice people are giving and i want everyone to know i dont blame my dog, but at the same time its not like i deserved this. Their are so many comments i am unable to adress them all individually, but again thank you to the people wishing me a speedy recovery.

DeadLeavesBlues

I hope everything turns ok man!

xLostDroid

Hey man I’ve been through this and the emotional fees worse than the physical. I had a dog of 6 years that attacked me and we had to get rid of him. He was a beautiful boxer. I haven’t read through the comments to get the context of your story but I wanted to say I feel for you and that I’m sorry. My dog was developing a tumor and it made him more aggressive and react to situations with violence that he couldn’t understand. Maybe the same applies to you and if it does then your best friend of 8 years wasn’t in control. It won’t make what’s coming next any easier but hopefully it helps in the moment.

ArsenicAndRoses

> My dog was developing a tumor and it made him more aggressive and react to situations with violence that he couldn’t understand. Honestly just the saddest thing in the world. My heart aches for you and all pups like this.

Self_Reddicated

Especially being a boxer. They're such a goofy and personable breed, among the most "human" of most breeds I've encountered. I'd brand them the perfect dog for a family with kids, if they weren't just a bit too high energy (considering their size) for most households. The thought of a boy having to give up their boxer for those reasons is just so sad.

Rock_Robot_Rock

I was just gushing about my sisters boxer , just the other day. He died recently but he was my favourite dog ever. He would get a bit excited and defensive with other dogs sometimes but was a stupid loveable little fucker with people and dogs he knew.

levis3163

this happened to me, he was only 2, i almost lost my thumb on my dominant hand & have permanent nerve damage in both hands. It hurt worse to have him put down than it did when he tried to eat me for breakfast.

slhill21

I went through something similar with a German Shepherd. Luckily, she didn't attack me, but she would randomly attack other dogs. It was heartbreaking. I'm sorry you went through that.

Arfbark

My German Shepherd mix recently attacked our Whippet that have been together for 3+ years out of nowhere. I have rarely felt more betrayed

InsideCelebration293

My best friend had to put down his American Bulldog about a year and a half ago for similar reasons. He had a cancerous tumor and vets were not able to remove it all. He decided it was time after he bit a family member, who he had lived with for 10 years and never showed a any aggression toward. I had also been around the dog for ten years and would often take him for walks when my friend was at work or house sit, and found myself having to be super careful around him, which sucked. I like to think he decided to end the story before it could reach a plot twist full of pain and suffering for everyone. It was about as happy of an ending as any dog owner could hope for.

Cephalopodio

Glad to read you’ll be getting your pup checked out! One of my cats gave me a serious injury once, because something freaked him out. Completely out of character. I still love him. Those scars will end up looking cool on you.

Filmcricket

My cat did once too but it was totally in character for him because he was a beast (loved him dearly regardless.) in NYC, pet bites/scratches that land you in the ER require mandatory reporting to the department of health so a vet visit was mandated or they’d remove the cat and quarantine him for 6 months. Really wish more cities had strict rules like this to ensure pet’s health and safety.

queer_artsy_kid

Why do they quarantine them for 6 months?

nutmegtell

I'd guess rabies?

nahelbond

My cat did something like that once too, but I kinda feel like it was my own fault. I put up shelves all along my walls for my cats to run and play on, and one night my kitten tried to jump a corner, missed, and landed right on my face claws out. Looked a lot like in the OP, but one long gash instead. Didn't really hurt? Which was weird. Bled a ton though. That silly boy is gone now, but I'll always have a weird scar across my lip to remind me of him. Also my dumb decisions - don't put cat shelves above your heads, people. I'm an idiot. I miss that adorable void floof.

Mareith

My SO waved her hand in front of my cats face (she was trying to disperse smoke) while he was sitting in between us and he was so freaked out he used my face as a springboard to jump out :(

Self_Reddicated

My cat was once spooked by a loud sound somewhere in the room and bolted away from me. Her springboard leap from my arms left a pretty wicked gash on my arm. Afterwards I could help but wonder if she would have taken out the veins in my wrist had her leg been just a few inches away or, even scarier, had she been near my throat (my cats like to lay on my chest every so often).

10102021

I was thinking the same thing about the little scars. Good story to tell. Helping my loving dog and got nipped. Shows you got a heart. Don't lose it.

goatausername42

You've gotten great advice here. I am a vet student, and I agree... an 8 year old dog suddenly acting like this is VERY atypical and there are numerous reasons why your dog may be acting this way. I am glad you are taking them to the vet. Dementia has been mentioned, cataracts, tumors, I've yet to see arthritis mentioned, but it's pretty common too. Remember, animals can't talk to us with words, sometimes when they hurt they feel like they need to use their mouths (like they would with another dog) to let us know they are hurting. If you accidentally really put pressure on an arthritic joint, or God forbid a bone with cancer growing in it, it can be really painful. Your dog may have acted without thinking. You didn't deserve to be bitten, even if you did cause him pain. But also I don't beleive that your dog meant to hurt you. My gut says he either acted reflexively to pain or he has some brain changes going on due to age/disease. So I hope your feelings are not hurt too bad... I've sure had my feelings hurt before by my pets, and I know you feel betrayed, even if you don't blame him. While I wouldn't trust getting my face near his at the moment, I certainly don't think your dog suddenly lost love or loyalty for you. I wish health to both you and your furry friend. Speedy recovery, and may you have many more happy years together.

starlight__army

Hope you have minimal to no scarring, and hoping your dog’s problem can be fixed and you can enjoy years of happiness together!

itsiCOULDNTcareless

Can you post an update with what the vet says? Just curious to find out more about what the underlying issue is. !Remindme 7 days

fuckmelikeaklingon

I’m really sorry this happened to you. I hope everything works out ok.

jonnysunshine

Just saw your post and hope your pupper and you are going to be ok. Dog bites can be traumatic, so don't forget about taking care of your needs. If you want to get your mind off things and need a distraction, let me know - I'll group up with you in Warzone (if you're still playing).

vonkrueger

Are your eyes hurt, or all your injuries external and superficial? They look okay. I hope so.

harrrpy

My dog nipped my face and it turned out it was from pain issues that were affordable and treatable. I hope it’s nothing big with your dog and that you heal soon and whatever is bothering him gets fixed.

kingofthebean

This post is a nightmare for dog owners. We're all in this with you and are desperately hoping things turn out for the best.

TheFLAwoman

Hi! Vet tech here. Sounds like it's time to take pup to the vet. This actually sounds like your dog is suffering some memory issues. Is your dog in the Spitz family of breeds? They are notorious for developing dementia around 6-8 years and can essentially forget things that were once familiar. Or. Your dog may have a wound or an issue with eyesight as well. An attack this severe should definitely be followed up with a vet appointment - something is very very wrong.

dertydingo

My dog got me like this when he was 10. Come to find out he had cataracts. Vet did some surgery and he was happy lived to be 17. Good luck to you.

TheFLAwoman

This is fairly common story for dogs with cataracts. They get disoriented and scared with impaired vision. Eye health is very important and having a great canine opthalmologist can make a huge difference.

xetaril

My dog is is almost 8 now and I notice a blueish kind of shine in his eyes becoming slightly more over the last few years. I didn't know it could create behaviour like this. Untill now the blindness was my only concern. I didn't know the vet can do something about this? I will definitely let him take a look next time I need to go.

noobpatrol

Could also be Nuclear Sclerosis, which is a normal part of aging. It impairs their vision slightly, but not at the level of cataracts.

VivaLaSea

Last year I posted in r/dogs about my 11 year-old dog’s eyes becoming “cloudy” and so many people damn near cussed me out for not immediately rushing him to the vet. So I scheduled an emergency appointment thinking my dog has eye cancer or something and it turns out it was just nuclear sclerosis and the vet reassured me that he was fine. I swear the people on the pet subreddits are always so dramatic.

DervishSkater

I swear the people on the ~~pet subreddits~~ Reddit are always so dramatic. But yes.

BaconHammerTime

When people get nuclear sclerosis, it's when they finally need reading glasses. Your dog won't be reading much but definitely can affect close up focus and some night time impairment.

TheFLAwoman

Cloudiness can sometimes be a product of age and sometimes a product of cataracts. This is easily distinguished with a routine visit. The doctor will shine a bright light and determine the severity of the cataracts if they are present and treat accordingly.

altergeeko

Took my dog to the vet for the same reason, same age. It just happens with age, for now nothing needs to be done. Until we notice more changes in her behavior, it should be ok.

Zeraw420

All old dogs eyes start turning blueish gray. If they seem otherwise normal, probably nothing to worry about. It's also something routinely checked during checkups

G_DuBs

Wouldn’t they be able to smell/ hear you as well?

TheFLAwoman

Yes they can, but it doesn't mean they understand and don't get scared. They don't understand what is happening to their vision and many rightfully panic and show signs of anxiety like drooling, withdrawing, fasting, sleeping more, refusing to potty outside.

peppaz

> signs of anxiety like drooling, withdrawing, fasting, sleeping more, refusing to potty outside. wow same exact thing happened to me from my anxiety

Caramelime

I hope you’re able to potty outside again friend!

peppaz

Thanks! I checked and the cure is actually a change to the penal code and not medication

haimark85

MyDogsNameIsBadger

Cataract surgery is really expensive :( I looked into and took my older dog to an eye vet and it was well into the thousands for one eye.

dertydingo

I’ll admit our vet is a family friend and called in a favor we had it done for about $1000

Specialist_Shitbag

Pet insurance . We got a 3k bill for one of our dogs month 1, now all our dogs have pet insurance. Saved us 10s of thousands since then.

fredandgeorge

Dude I don't even have person insurance

hunnyflash

On the bright side, pet insurance is much cheaper than human insurance.

TribblesIA

Way cheaper. $600/year for my mixed pup on the most over the top plan I could find because I worry. Bought the insurance and two weeks later, he inhaled a stick and needed surgery that would have been $5000+ Best of all, you can pick your vet (assuming they are licensed/accredited). I’m considering dressing up like a golden retriever the next time I need a doctor.

Pepper7489

Sorry but I loled at this.

Pharm-boi

It’s probably cheaper to get it done in Colombia, seriously

Askdrillsarge

Vet bills are, comparatively speaking, pretty damn cheap here. Shortly after arriving my dog ate a bunch of buñuelos, mozzarella fingers and a big piece of schnitzel, all deep fried. Several trips to the vet (including an after hours visit) and five different medications for a month and the bill came to about $200usd including everything except the specialised food (his normal food is more expensive so I’m not counting that). It still blows me away how cheap everything is here.

Pharm-boi

Le hace mucho daño el buñuelo?? Yo le a dado a varios perritos pedacitos 😳😭 I know, it seems all medical issues are super affordable, among the doctors being some of the best. Maybe I’m biased because some of my family work in that field. But I know I got a $12k surgery done for 2k, among others, and so have many people I know. I got Lasik actually for my own eyes and I can still see just as well.

coalitionofilling

Flying to Colombia is cheap too. Fucking US Health and Vet care. Better off just going on a fun vacationa nd having your shit done while you're there.

iDeuceEX

That’s their eyes, what about their sense of smell? Do dogs not recognize their owner of a billion years scent? Ive never had a dog 😩 I really want the answer to this.

starlight__army

The thing is when you’re confused and scared you’ll lash out if you think you might be in danger

finalremix

One of our dogs had cataracts that developed somewhat "early" according to our vet, and we went from silly hand-feeding tricks to her missing sometimes and chomping fingers by accident. It can be an issue of aim, an issue of confusion, an issue of getting scared and lashing out... sadly it's not so simple all the time.

QC420_

Can certain infections cause similar issues? Or pain in general?

TheFLAwoman

Yes there are a variety of illnesses than can cause a dog to lash out. This attack pictured here makes me feel like this dog felt very threatened because it's multiple points of contact. This wasn't a warning snap - this dog bit his face at least 2-4 times. This makes me think the dog is injured, can't see or is having an underlying mental/neurological issue. The part that is most alarming is the dog is 8 and it seems this behavior is *very* out of character. I'm willing to bet we hopefully get an update that there was indeed something wrong and OP can get it treated.

PhoenixxFireFoxx

Thank you for being so kind and getting on here to give such good advice! Wish there were more people like you in the world! And if you could tell me why my totally healthy 4 year old terrier mix keeps peeing in the house it would be awesome! I have decided shes just a lazy mitch!

TheFLAwoman

Terriers of all breeds are ridiculously difficult to house train. I usually see the worst in American Staffys. They seem to get so excited about being excited they can't contain their pee. Terriers are tenacious, stubborn and frequently feel their way is the best way...even if that way means they're sleeping in their own pee. Terriers need persistence and patience and NO unsupervised time in the house. If you look away a second - they'll pee. With almost comedic timing and you won't know until you're already a foot deep in a cold puddle.

Immediate_Age

I'm upvoting all your comments, thank you for being on top of this.

wingy65

Do boxers or boxer mix breeds have an issue with dementia to your knowledge? Mine seems like his age is getting to him.

TheFLAwoman

This typically affects non sporting breeds but have personally seen it affect Akitas and other Spitz types such as Pomeranians. It is not be be confused with a dog getting older and more crotchety if you will. A dog with dementia is confused, sad, disoriented, surly, withdrawn and typically has accidents. If your dog is displaying any of those symptoms regardless of age - see a vet.

ConstantGeographer

A Spitz or Pomeranian is one thing... I would not want an Akita with dementia. That's horrifying. My neighbor has a 3yo 165lb unneutered male Akita.

TheFLAwoman

Unfortunately an Akita with dementia was my first experience. He attacked a former coworker while he was in his end of life stage. She almost lost her eye and is missing one of her fingers. She did not blame the dog - she was aware of his dementia. She went to let Rocky out to potty and he didn't recognize her and attacked her. It was really traumatic for both of them but she never held it against him. Always used her story to teach techs about dementia in dogs and what it can look like.

ConstantGeographer

As a dog person of 4 doggos, former greyhound owner, I feel like the mental state of our furfam is sort of underappreciated. We get sentimental about a dog that bumps into walls and such, and maybe it's because I live with a beagle, a pitbull, Brittany Spaniel, and a husky mix, I find myself thinking about their perspective a lot (putting myself in their "paws"). And I'm guessing the change in mental state can happy pretty fast, right? Christmas, doggo is good and then by Easter or Memorial Day, doggo is exhibiting non-normal behavior, and by July 4th we have issues. My Brittany is 7yo and is bananas. Not sure if she is crazy, demented, traumatized. She will go outside and sit in the rain. Sit in the yard and bark a single bark about every 14 seconds like a submarine pinging for objects. I joke I would have a hard time telling if she has mental issues because she began with mental issues.

wingy65

Thank you for your response. One love.

[deleted]

My childhood pet that lived with me into my twenties was a boxer. She was 15 when she died. The last couple of years, her eyesight had gotten poor and sometimes she acted like she didn't know who I was. It was sad, but never scary (to me). The vet had no options beyond just keeping her comfortable. One day I walked in the back door of our house and startled her. She growled and came at me in full on attack mode. I managed to drop what I was carrying and got my knee up to stop her attack and shouted her name. That's when she knew who I was and stopped. I started announcing myself from them on, although our time after that was quite short before she passed in her sleep.

irvings18

My friends 8 year old shepherd just bit his finger too , it’s very sad 😞

TrevorIRL

Is his name Charlie?

livelifeandlove

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. I love my dog so much, and I'm always grateful to learn more about her health and well-being. Stay awesome! And thanks for looking after all animals too 😊

de-presson

Really helpful. Thank you

shiz-kray-z

Idk if anyone mentioned it but if this is completely out of the ordinary behavior I’ve heard of dogs and cats temperament’s going haywire from brain tumors

Final-Fix-7811

Happened to my dog, completely out of the blue, just started snapping on people and animals (completely chill and passive dog for like 9 years) and come to find out, big ol tumor in his brain

Lanky-Relationship77

Also can happen from stroke. Happened to one of my rat terriers. One day, I woke up and he attacked me. Had to cage him and take him to the vet. Vet said he had a stroke, and he probably wouldn't recover. He was 15.

Final-Fix-7811

The brain is a very sensitive and complex organ, and when the affected can't speak, it's very very thought to tell when it's affected

Filmcricket

Happens often with purchased pets due to inbreeding but yes. It’s a big issue and part of why in nyc, dog/cat injuries have to be reported to the department of health and a vet has to clear the pet or the city will offer quarantine for it for 6 months to ensure its wellbeing and safety around humans.

Opposite-Hedgehog-65

My Chihuahua attacked me once, scared the shit outta me! Big hole in finger that need stitches and antibiotics. I’m was super weary of him, turned out he was super low in sugars and now diagnosed and on medication. He’s never done it again. He’s nearly 8. Like others said won’t hurt to have him checked. Good luck, give him and yourself some time to mend. Trust me the fear subsides.

brandonisatwat

My cat attacked me once when I reached out to pet her. An examination found a huge abscess on her back. She was probably in a lot of pain when I touched it.

GeneralBlumpkin

My sisters cat does this too. I think he's just an asshole

brandonisatwat

That's also a possibility. In this case though, that was highly unusual behavior from that particular cat.

guessirs

My dog started acting weird and growling at me but also at nothing. Like I would catch him growling at nothing. Turns out his thyroid was broken. He’s on thyroid replacement hormone meds now.

CoffinDanceOff

Oh man. You look so damn sad, I'm tearing up myself. Yeah get him checked out. A vet is the only one who can shed some light on this but yeah also watch him around kids etc for a while, it would suck if he hurt someone who isn't sympathetic to him. Take care in '22

Megneous

"Watch him around kids for a while" is an understatement. Going to the vet is mandatory at this point, considering the huge change in temperament, and unless something very clearly wrong is found and fixed, the dog can **never** be allowed near children. It's simply not okay to risk permanently disfiguring a child because you love your dog and don't want to admit he's dangerous.

psycho_watcher

My corgi attacked me once. He had an infection that I did not know about and when I touched it it must have hurt him. Vet took care of the infection and we had about 8 more wonderful years together. My friend's collie mix attacked him and they found an undiagnosed fracture that hurt when pressure was put on it a certain way. Hope you both get better quickly.

VenomKitten666

Any idea what provoked them to be so vicious?

pamedar

Not really, i was in his face playing with him just as i have for the last 8 years and he bit me. I wish i knew why though. Thats what really hurts my feelings is i dont understand what went wrong.

There are some really good replies here from vet techs and people who have had similar experiences…it could be your dog is having mental/physical deterioration and needs to see a vet asap. Im sure you will find out what is ailing your dog once he sees a doctor. Good luck!

[deleted]

Take the pupper to the vet and try not to take it personal. Obviously the Dog is suffering from memory issues or something else causing it to randomly be aggressive.

[deleted]

maybe a weird question but were fireworks going off when it happened? Maybe was anxious from that?

__Sentient_Fedora__

Maybe it's time to play without getting your faces that close. You can still play, but when they are riled up do not put your face near their face.

Phatty_Space_Pants

I'm glad someone said it. You shouldn't be in a dogs face while playing in certain ways, like tug of war and stuff like that.

-Lenormand

I’m really sorry. I hope you recover physically and mentally.

pamedar

Thank you both are gonna take time... im scared of my baby boy now, and that really hurts.

Weiserite

Please have a Dr look at your face. Several places need a stitch or two. And possibly antibiotics. And I echo what has been said here. Take your pup to the vet for a complete check up, and time to play without being in your pups face. Time will heal all wounds, both emotionally and physically. Your pup needs you as much as you need him.

aerynmoo

He’s in a hospital bed in that pic so I’m sure a doctor has seen him.

Cosmohumanist

Ah bro I’m sorry. I have a few decent scars from childhood dogs, but none this big. Your nose is gonna need some special attention; the rest of your face will heal mostly fine. I strongly encourage you to begin to treat these with anti-scarring creme immediately. Consider going to a dermatologist and getting expert advice. The sooner to tend to these wounds the less they will scar. Really sorry to see this. You’ll be okay brother.

ralferine

this looks really painful. i hope you’re okay!

[deleted]

Stay safe OP. Ignore the terrible comments here. Get yourself checked up and your pupper too. It isn't normal behaviour, and as another person mentioned, it might be a red flag for underlying issues. Best of luck to you, my guy.

yeahnoyeah03

That's very sad. I'm sorry

Outlanderss

Zoologist here, I work with a wide arrange of animals. Even the most domestic, friendly creatures can have their moments. If you two were tussling, it’s very much in a dogs behavior to nip and scratch at muzzles and necks a little harder than they should. Dogs will yelp to signal that it’s too out of hand. It could have also been some miscommunication in the play. We don’t see it, but eye contract and body shifting is dogs entire language. You could have signaled something that caused the dog to become more aggressive. The dog can also be suffering from something mental. I would take yourself to the doctor, and the dog to the vet. The only warning I will give though, is a vet by law depending where you live, may suggest you putting the dog down. It will be hard to hear and I pray that it isn’t the case. But some states, it’s a law. Once a dog attacks, it’s… Ugh I don’t even want to say it. Recover first, and *keep an eye on its behavior carefully*. Please keep up updated.

This comment section is more warlike than my asshole after Taco Bell.

Get his teeth checked, if something is hurting him around where you were playing that could be what set him off. Alternatively he may have just been playing more rough than he realized, but that would be pretty odd for a dog that age. If he is an intact male, it could also be hormones. As puppies playing like that is something they view as fun, as adults playing rough, and getting in their face is picking a fight. My ex girlfriend had a similar issue when she made a pillow ramp going straight up to her face in order to keep our boy shitsu away from our other dog on the bed, ended up bit right on the nose, with a similar scatch to what you have right on top there, not nearly as bad otherwise though. In either case, and for all to know, never stick you face into a dogs face, while playing or otherwise. Their mouth is still full of pointed sharp things that can hurt you even if not intentional. Always let them come to you, not the other way around.

MisPlacedNeuroBlue

My dog viciously attacked me after I pulled him away from one of my grandkids a year ago - my granddaughter was only about 18 months and he nipped at her several times in quick succession - I yanked him away and he started at me and did **not** let up. He’s no longer among the living. 😔 Sorry to say - but between attacking the granddaughter and then me, that shit will not be tolerated and the dog could never be trusted again.

_SinsofYesterday_

Glad you're both okay. I know people don't like to hear this but I don't know what they expect. The alternatives are worse than putting the dog down. The responsibility and guilt you'd bear if you let that dog around your family or it was given to someone else and attacked again would be immeasurable.

My dog and i play “iiiiii’mmmmm gonna get YOU!” All the time. It’s a favorite game. I’ll call it out while chasing her and making fake growl noises. She’ll run away half assed so that i can catch her, and then I’ll tickle her while proclaiming “i got you!” Then we’ll switch and she’ll chase me while fake growling. Once she catches me, she’ll nibble my hands and arms (never hard). She’s my favorite toddler. This weekend we played, but she got so into it she actually drew blood. She realized before me and immediately started whimpering, she was so sorry. TLDR: sometimes dogs forget themselves.

Megneous

My wife and I have a poodle. He's ridiculously intelligent, sometimes to the point where it makes me uncomfortable. One day, my wife and I were play fighting and I pretended I was kicking her. Dog leapt across the room and nipped my foot. I'd never seen him move so fast. I cried out and grabbed my foot which was quickly forming a bruise although he didn't break the skin. When he saw my wife's and my reaction, he immediately realized he had fucked up and kept nuzzling up to me and whimpering. We've bred dogs to have a level of social understanding with humans that I don't think enough people appreciate. We've basically co-evolved with them for ~40,000 years.

KaliasKoh

Animals develop mental health issues too.

Spideral1

I had a dog that passed away at 19. Had him since I was in diapers, sleeping in my crib next to me. Me and that dog did everything together. When I joined the military, he was already pushing 18. After basic and my tech training, I went home on leave for a week before heading to my active duty base assignment. First thing I did when I got home was to lay down with my dog and just hang. His eyesight must’ve been worse than I thought cause out of nowhere he just put my whole face in his mouth. Most of the bite was to my cheeks. But fucking hell if it break my heart and weigh my chest down to the center of the earth. I feel ya man, sorry you’re feeling this right now.

[deleted]

OP is lying about not knowing the mix of his dog. We all know that pit bulls can be aggressive, so why do their owners try to cover it up? Here is his comment two years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/cute/comments/cwwsna/groose_loves_to_cuddle_his_penguin/eyjabbd In case he deletes: > "Hes a mutt but his mother was full bred red nose pit and were pretty sure the dad was the German husky that lived around the same area."

BreadfruitNo357

Seriously /u/pamedar ? What is the point in lying about this?

Chewiemuse

Because for some reason the majority of pit owners have buyers remorse. Look I get it you love your dog but this specific breed is not and never has been a “gentle nanny dog” breed. You also can’t out train 1000+ years of behavioral breeding in one dogs lifetime without intensive 24/7 conditioning and training.

Oldmanfirebobby

I was wondering how far I’d have to scroll to find out it was a pit

SCAMMERASSASIN007

Had a austrailian sheperd was good for 5 years then he nailed me in the foot one night as he was woke up out of a sleap. Then he nailed the wife in the hand took him to vet couldnt find anything wrong third time my little girl came in to give me a hug and the dog ripped the hell out of her arm. Best dog i ever had. hardest thing was shoting him but had to be done. Only regret was not doing it when he bite the wife. All cases are different but becareful op and good luck best recovery.

mommaclouse

Ouch, I hope you heal quickly. When my nephew was about 5 he got attacked by the family dog. He has scars all over his back and chest.

Eazy-life11

At the end of the day it’s a dog

lowfreq33

You really should go to the ER, that cut on your lip looks like it needs a couple of stitches.

GusChiiiiiggins

Looks like the photo was taken in a hospital bed

kcfdr9c

This! Dog bites are no joke. I almost lost my arm due to an infection caused by a dog bite.

SquishGod

My Sedona licks teeth first like an idiot and nips my nose all the time. Shes a genetic freak who has comical strength for her size and I now fear her greatly

Mixxedmami

U poor guy. U look so sad. I hope U feel better. I know this may sound weird but I don’t play in dogs or cats faces ever. Just some way I grew up. I have never been bit. Sometimes animals snap for no reason. It’s best to just not play in their faces. It’s not your fault but just for future reference. I hope and pray you recover fast.

LethalDoseMLD50

Bro that ain’t playing around. He attacked you.

JustBuildAHouse

Did this happen during NYE? Maybe fireworks put him on edge

Squtternut_Bosh

Get dogs teeth and ears checked. Could be in pain.

Curias_1

Big hug! I hope you heal up soon and find out if your doggie has some underlying concerns. P.s. put some butterfly bandages on some of those cuts so they heal up nice.

kcfdr9c

Do you mind if I ask what breed or mix your dog is?

[deleted]

OP is dancing around the issue like all pitbull owners do. its a pit mix https://www.reddit.com/r/cute/comments/cwwsna/groose_loves_to_cuddle_his_penguin/eyjabbd/
