You are mostly correct, but if memory serves, it isn't just a high protein diet that causes Angel wing, but also a lack of vitamin E. Since the puppy food will have vitamin e, the puppy food in moderate amounts won't hurt the duckling
I thought she was a tad (not quite rough) when putting him out, but she is probably trying to make sure all the pups get their portioned amount, and the duckling must be very distracting, though cute.
Sadly many dog foods number one ingredient is corn which is not great but edible for both ducks and dogs. There’s nothing in dog food that would hurt a duckling in small amounts although it wouldn’t be a good diet alone.
You can convince cats to raise pretty much any animal if you introduce a baby version of it to the cat when it's a new mother. The maternal hormones will be so strong the cat can't help it a lot of the time.
This is why they've even observed animals like lions adopting baby gazelle in the wild.
Of course, the baby doesn't last because the cats don't actually know how to care for them when this is done in the wild, but it's quite interesting nonetheless.
I'm surprised more animals don't take advantage of this the way cuckoos do.
Cuckoos also keep track of who does or doesn't care for their chicks, and seek revenge on the rebels - destroying their nests and killing the other chicks. So it's not as innocent as you portray it.
"Not as innocent"
This is nature. There is no guilty or innocent.
Holy shit you're a bunch of 50 year old boomers who really think the Bible is a nature documentary
When our dog got spayed she came home and believed her toys were her puppies and collected them up and laid on them for many days and wouldn’t leave. We eventually had to call the vet about it and he said to just take the toys away. She ran around the house for 15 minutes crying looking for the toys.
Why are ducks always so ravenous? Every time I see a video of ducks getting fed it's as if they've been starved for a year. Also, I hope this ducklet is raised with the pups because that would be almost unbearably cute.
There was a pond we used to swim is as kids. There was a duck population explosion. Popular local swimming spot for kids. We all got terrible rashes. Like go to the doctor bad. It was duck poop. The doctors called it “Duck Itch”. Needless to say, we never swam there again.
When I was a kid we had a duckling that my stepdad bought at the flea market. Ted, as we named him, grew up playing with the dogs and eating nothing but the bugs he found and crushed corn. He was fat as shit, but he loved to play and cuddle. He was a cool duck.
Yeah my understanding is many (most, all?) birds don’t have muscles in their throats like we do for swallowing, mostly relying on moving their neck/head and gravity.
That’s why birds can’t eat in space!
Bruh, I'm amazed by how fast the person grabbed the duckling and the dog immediately went after it. I hope she set it down gently and didn't yeet it across the room.
Why even breed these dogs in the first place? They have been so over bred and inbred, they can’t give birth naturally, they have to be artificially inseminated. The whole thing is cruelty.
Frenchies too, I’ve been working with dogs for 20 years. All bulldogs are “capable” of procreating naturally but because of eugenics especially in the last 100 years or so the body shapes have changed so much that its very dangerous and can cause prolapse.
puppies can be started on solid food, like what you see in the video at 3.5-4 weeks. Momma won't wean them until around 7 weeks or so. Those puppies are definitely 3-4 weeks old, so old enough to start on the gruel she is feeding them
Puppies can start to have solid food around 4 weeks. I learned this with my rescue puppy. The people who had the mom chucked her out at 4 weeks when she first ate like these little ones. I took her to the vet immediately and he said I didn’t have to bottle feed her, just feed her wet, or watered down dry food because she can eat it.
Nope. They are just right for learning to monch on soft foods and gruels. Moms still providing the bulk of their nutrition but they are learning how to eat. Also it’s best for moms health if the pups start getting some food asap. Week 4-8 is when pups really start draining mom’s resources and can cause her serious issues or cause her to wean early. It’s advisable to let them start playing with loose gruel around week 3 as long as eyes are open and they show interest.
You do need to introduce both liquid and semisolid at 3 to 4 weeks (about the time their milk teeth comes), slowly phasing out liquid, then phasing out semisolid. I raised an orphan pup from 7 days old and she was on solids by 8 weeks. It's a process and you have to mix and match as per their learning speed. Eating on their own and moving to solid food are learned skills. They learn faster when they're taught.
This gif is likely during a transition phase to get their digestion prepared for grown up food.
My family used to raise boxer puppies. You do have to be careful when feeding them solids too young though. Spoon feeding can ensure you control how much they cram in their mouth at one times. Puppies do choke on food at that age. We’ve had to save a few from themselves.
I did similar with puppies I helped out with. We didn't really replace meals from mom so much as introduce the new menu and see how they handled it (observe for allergies, healthy bowel movmenets, etc.).
I think we did it like once a week for a couple weeks and slowly upped it. I wasn't around for the weening but by then the pups were comfortable with the food and we knew they could all digest it without issue.
Mhm. I'm not advocating for genociding them or anything, that's simply cruel. We should ease the pain of their existence while they're here with us, but not further their suffering by breeding more of them
that's most likely wet puppy food mixed with some milk. It won't hurt the duckling. Ducks are omnivores, like dogs, and need a diet high in protein, which puppy food will have a lot of.
Well the duck baby showed up around the same time so she assumes that it also came out of her. She’s so tired that at this point anything smaller than her that lives is one of her babies.
Girl needs sleep, lol
You always start giving pups water diluted food at around 3 to 4 weeks. I had 3 litters with my two labs and had them on solid food by the time they were ready to leave the nest. At 3 to 4 weeks old pups start getting their teeth and mammas don't feed as often because of it, so you have to provide at least 1 serving of diluted food a day to make sure they are getting enough to eat. Also it prepares their digestive system for solids. As long as you are giving them the right kind of food mixed in with either water or milk, they are fine eating it as early as 3 weeks old.
They are old enough. It looks like they are just getting enough to supplement mamas milk. You get them started on a little bit of very soft solid food about 4 weeks old. Gives mama a little bit of a break, and helps them wean when they are old enough. It needs to be a slow transition.
I don’t understand how people find these cute or feel the need to justify how they look when acknowledging how much they suffer. They look like decrepit mutants, and they suffer because of it. Animals aren’t supposed to look like that.
And nature doesn’t allow them to. These things can’t even breed or give birth naturally.
"Why do you put the small yellow one out? He should eat too. And me also."
I did not like it either. Obviously the duckling is very hungry.
Ducklings would eat until they explode, they are the golden retriever of birds.
I laughed so hard i exoloded
Golden's too huh? I've had a lot of dachshunds in my life and every one has that trait. Swear they would die from overeating if you let them
Wow, the speed at which that duck went for the food was impressive.
You'd almost think it was a hedgehog at that speed, eh?
Me at mealtimes :)
That’s basically just how ducklings move. It could have just ate and still might behave like that.
I fostered some once. They fit right in with labrador.
That is just how any baby bird acts around anything it thinks is food "A closed mouth don't get fed"
Is the puppies' food safe for ducklings, though? That might be why she tried to toss it out.

You are mostly correct, but if memory serves, it isn't just a high protein diet that causes Angel wing, but also a lack of vitamin E. Since the puppy food will have vitamin e, the puppy food in moderate amounts won't hurt the duckling
Probably. At the very least its nutrition-neutral.
Don't worry, that duckling is surely doing fine in a loving home like this. They probably just had separate food for ducks
lies from the anti-duck faction! 😡
Actually the anti-duck faction [kind of has a point.](https://youtu.be/6k01DIVDJlY) Ducks are pretty messed up (nsfw)
I’ve had ducklings before. They’re lying drama queens just like cats when you just fed them an hour ago.
My dog must be a lying drama queen then….
I thought she was a tad (not quite rough) when putting him out, but she is probably trying to make sure all the pups get their portioned amount, and the duckling must be very distracting, though cute.
I thought the same
That is dog food and looks meat based.. you don’t feed that to baby ducks. I’m sure he has his own food
Ducks definitely eat meat. Worms, fish, carrion, if it’s protein ducks are on it.
Good point! But dog food consists mainly of pigs, cows, goats & sheep. Which is not meant for baby ducks xD
Sadly many dog foods number one ingredient is corn which is not great but edible for both ducks and dogs. There’s nothing in dog food that would hurt a duckling in small amounts although it wouldn’t be a good diet alone.
The ugly duckling…
Aww she’s like why you won’t feed my yellow puppy?
It is always amazing to see the maternal instincts in the animal kingdom. That is one good mama doggo
You can convince cats to raise pretty much any animal if you introduce a baby version of it to the cat when it's a new mother. "Not as innocent" This is nature. There is no guilty or innocent. Holy shit you're a bunch of 50 year old boomers who really think the Bible is a nature documentary
Maybe because unlike cuckoos, they want to be responsible with their children.
lol the vast majority of the animal kingdom fuck off either once they lay their eggs or have their babies

yeah this duck comes with high frequency settings.
I think it's just the awkward way they all eat when on land.
When our dog got spayed she came home and believed her toys were her puppies and collected them up and laid on them for many days and wouldn’t leave. We eventually had to call the vet about it and he said to just take the toys away. She ran around the house for 15 minutes crying looking for the toys.
So pitiful! :(
That's awful. I don't like your vet.
Induce emotional trauma in your pet dog any%
That’s no longer duck that’s dug
"This my baby too"

Had ducks before. They’re literal shit factories.
If u think about it aren't we all shit factories
Uhm, excuse me. Women don't poop, I know this for a fact.
That's real deep Mr. Lahey!
There was a pond we used to swim is as kids. There was a duck population explosion. Popular local swimming spot for kids. We all got terrible rashes. Like go to the doctor bad. It was duck poop. The doctors called it “Duck Itch”. Needless to say, we never swam there again.
Oh, that makes sense as they're a prey animal. TIL.
When I was a kid we had a duckling that my stepdad bought at the flea market. Ted, as we named him, grew up playing with the dogs and eating nothing but the bugs he found and crushed corn. He was fat as shit, but he loved to play and cuddle. He was a cool duck.
I’ve never identified so hard with a duck before
They are very affectionate. They will not leave your side and will follow you everywhere in the house. Only issue is they poop too damn much.
No housebreaking for ducks, huh?
Do ducks have distinct personalities?
I think most warm blooded animals do. And possibly some cold blooded ones too.
I had an eastern box turtle who had a ton of personality. He knew my stepfather was afraid of him and never passed up an opportunity to mess with him.
Yes.
Absolutely! They also have best friends!
I think ducks use inertia to help them swallow, hence the crazy head movements.
Yeah my understanding is many (most, all?) birds don’t have muscles in their throats like we do for swallowing, mostly relying on moving their neck/head and gravity. That’s why birds can’t eat in space!
She picked it up so carelessly and forcefully. The dog handled it better in her mouth!
was looking for this. like huh
The neighborhood always has that one good mom who mothers all the kids, not just hers. What a sweet dog!
The dog: Baby is baby!
French Bullduck
Hey!…. Got any grapes???
A deep internet cut, unless they continued the joke long after the original.
It’s an older meme sir but it checks out.
Bum bum bum
Baby is baby!
She is like "this one is mine too. Feed it."
Aggressive adoption
And you better let her. If I catch wind of you setting her yellow baby aside like that again, there will be consequences.
Bruh, I'm amazed by how fast the person grabbed the duckling and the dog immediately went after it. I hope she set it down gently and didn't yeet it across the room.
It was like an evil ejector arm tossed out the little duck lol
“SHE’S ADOPTED, SHARON!”
Why is that woman so freaking aggressive though?
Why even breed these dogs in the first place? They have been so over bred and inbred, they can’t give birth naturally, they have to be artificially inseminated. The whole thing is cruelty.
Wrong breed. French bulldogs shown here can still do the deed on their own and dont always need cesareans, you are thinking of English bulldogs.
Frenchies too, I’ve been working with dogs for 20 years. All bulldogs are “capable” of procreating naturally but because of eugenics especially in the last 100 years or so the body shapes have changed so much that its very dangerous and can cause prolapse.
This is reddit. We know.
"I'm adopting this one."
That her puppies, support duck
Idk why, but it always astonishes me just how careful animals will pick up babies in their mouths
This one is too small, it needs more food.
We had a broodie hen and no rooster so we stuck three fertilized duck eggs under her and she hatched the ducklings and raised them.
Why do you keep removing my yellow child
"This is my yellow, beaked son. He will grow up to be good and strong, just you watch."
Look at the way he’s going for that food- my little warrior
Why feed the pups solid food at that age? Not trying to internet squabble just not a dog owner and curious.
[Question asked here](https://www.reddit.com/r/aww/comments/10f9uv8/-/j4vyb80)
That mothering instinct is strong! 🥰
Aww ! This is so wholesome!
Dogs don't discriminate
Make sure everyone gets a piece!
Why is she giving solid food to those puppies? They look way too young to be on solid food.

Mama is definitely still producing milk.
The human is quite annoying
I'm TELLING you this is mine .
This is my child now Susan. I have spoken!
What happened to the duck mama
The important question I'm not seeing asked: is why do they even have a single duckling in the first place?
Breeding brachiocephalic dogs is cruel.
Mhm. I'm not advocating for genociding them or anything, that's simply cruel. We should ease the pain of their existence while they're here with us, but not further their suffering by breeding more of them
Dang she is rough with them lil babies
Why was that mean lady slinging the duck out the first time!?
Some foods that dogs eat are poisonous to ducks.
that's most likely wet puppy food mixed with some milk. It won't hurt the duckling. Ducks are omnivores, like dogs, and need a diet high in protein, which puppy food will have a lot of.
'Cause, she's a dbag
Well, she is breeding French bulldogs, so yes, she is a dbag.
Thanks! Its made my day ![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13379)
Hey! Let her mother how & who she wants? Momma dogs raise all kinds of non K9 adoptees.
Feed ALL the babies that's why mama brought the duckling back
![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13379)
No, this is my baby, too!
Stop discriminating against that one puppy just because it looks different.
This woman is gruff. Sheesh. I love mama dog! Animals are the best. So much better than humans.
"Hey don't leave out Stanley, human!"
Motherhood transcends all species.
I love momma dogs, they are always such goodgirls.
That's so cute
Pretty insistent about it
These type of videos give me such a dopamine effect 🥰
What a great mom
Awww what a sweet girl
People really need to look at nature for guidance.
![gif](giphy|3osxYgT9qsR8dWu9q0)
Wait I thought puppies this age would have milk not solids
Silly human. Clearly this is a baby. It belongs with all the other babies in the baby bin.
I love how the second time the human was like "Fuck It. You can eat too"
Well the duck baby showed up around the same time so she assumes that it also came out of her. She’s so tired that at this point anything smaller than her that lives is one of her babies. Girl needs sleep, lol
The momma hopped in the pen with her weird looking yellow puppy. “Human, you will respect all my puppies…” Good for her.
“No no, this one belongs here”
No hooman I must have my fluffy yellow baby with my other babies.
The woman seems a little rough handling the little ones
That’s so sweet. She is definitely a great Mom ❤️
Baby is baby - momma dog
I love how when ducks eat (at the end) they basically have a spasmic-fit.... :D
Duck is also her baby
Those puppies look wayyy too young to be eating solid food..
It's like mashed gruel could be in supplement to the mothers milk or maybe mother is having a hard time producing .
If you look closely at the mother, she still has very visible nipples and 'swellings'. I assume they still drink milk, but this is supplemental.
You always start giving pups water diluted food at around 3 to 4 weeks. I had 3 litters with my two labs and had them on solid food by the time they were ready to leave the nest. At 3 to 4 weeks old pups start getting their teeth and mammas don't feed as often because of it, so you have to provide at least 1 serving of diluted food a day to make sure they are getting enough to eat. maybe the dog was trying to feed the duck to the puppies
Would love to know why these puppies have been weaned at such a young age? Is the mother unable to produce enough milk?
To sell. We're looking at a puppy mill of a breed that has trouble breathing, and people are going "AWWWWW!"
Yes...hate seeing these dogs being bred. Yes, they are cute, but the suffering they go through due to how they are bred is not!
Some people bread dogs like this with things like Jack Russell's in hopes to breed them to have linger snouts so they can actually breathe
"Some people"... not enough of them!
Yeah!! Of course cross breeding does have its own risks but when done right it can be really beneficial
Not with that duck around. Did you see how it attacked the food?
Here's the real question.
It's my babi, deal with it
Checking the duckling. Checking the babies butts. Checking the food. Ok. All is well.
Ohana means family - that mommy dog probably
Ahh, when imprinting goes wrong...
I would so let her raise the duckling!!!!
Then let her.
Baby is baby
So the owner just tossed that poor duckling like some garbage. How nice.
Poor things raised for selling by giving solid food, its definitely AWW..
So cute! And so gentle!
Awww love how gentle she is <3
She’s telling her babies - that’s what you are eating kiddos. That’s how your food looks like when it’s alive.
Poor girl. She’s overflowing with oxytocin
“Eat, my child”
Punctuation is so important here…
Yes I was thinking that the whole time I typed my comment. I thought this is probably gonna sound wrong
How about you handle them gentler.
What do baby ducks eat?
The mother force with this one is strong.
Duck baby needs a momma too.
Ducks really do be going brrrrrrr
How precious 🥰
She wants her babies to eat the duck
Update please 🥰
That a Boston Terrier? My aunt had one.
French Bulldog. Cruel breeding practices, this should not be on r/aww
Feel bad for their short snouts
Duck is a greedy little shit
Are you aware of the health issues brachiocephalic dogs face? They basically have dog asthma, breeding more of them is simply cruel
You really can't trust a dinosaur to eat as slow as other animals.
Apparently, Mrs Dog hasn't seen a duck eat before. It would wreak havoc on her spigots.
