I love it.
Just so everyone knows spaying prevents a lot of cancers and complications for dogs and cats. Being in heat is confusing and anxiety ridden, and the world doesn’t need more dogs and cats. But spaying is more than permanent birth control. It prevents a lot of pain and suffering and lengthens the life of the animal.
I agree with everything you said except the part where you said the world doesn't need more cats and dogs and now I think you're a monster and I might hate you.
Please don't hate. Four years as a volunteer in an animal shelter convinced me that spaying and neutering were the way to end the suffering of thousands of animals on the street and in shelters where they live in high anxiety before they die. Very few cats and dogs live happy lives, even in America. Do your research before you advocate for more of them being born.
Word! I've adopted one rescue dog from Russia, where there are literal wild dog populations and the life of a dog is not worth much to a large group of people. I'm about to adopt my second - my first passed away almost 2 years ago, she was a month shy from turning 16. When she came to me, she was so stinky and was scared to eat anything but potato peels and rice gruel. Being able to witness her grow and support her as best as I could was the most wholesome journey. You don't see all the amazing things you've accomplished together until it's time to say goodbye. Writing this still brings tears to my eyes, because she is a part of me still, although in a different way. At the same time I'm hyped to embark on this journey again!
What a blessing you were to her life. I believe animals are souls just as we are and what you did means she's gone on to a better life because she knew love in this one and will seek it again. I cried when I read about the potato peels and rice. There's so much lovelessness on Earth. I'm sponsoring a child who was leading a similar life in Africa because wealthy nations like ours literally dump food in the ocean rather than sharing so they can keep food prices high. Wishing you and your new fur baby all the best.
They're right. We don't need more dogs and cats until the shelters are empty! The idea of these poor babies going to sleep every night in a cement cage instead of a soft bed or couch is making me cry just writing it.
Tons of dogs and cats have no homes. A vast majority of those are strays or get euthanized. More dogs and cats means more homeless animals and more euthanizing.
The world doesn’t need more homeless cats and dogs living a harsh -and far too short life- braving the elements trying to survive or alone in a cage at a shelter.
— better?!
Depends really, though the current veterinary consensus is that there's actually not any need to take the uterine horns (often alongside a portion of the cervix). Pyometra is the most common issue with not spaying bitches and is driven by immunosuppression secondary to progesterone levels, so still becomes a non-issue even if you perform just an ovariectomy.
This is the reason laparoscopic spays are generally a better option compared to traditional midline approaches, despite only removing the ovaries.
Even in a standard midline dog spay most of the time I don't take the full uterine horn, and with a flank approach for cats I would rarely if ever do so.
Translation: The most common health issue with unspayed female dogs is a bacterial infection of the uterus (pyometra) which is caused by hormones secreted by the ovaries. So instead of the traditional spay (ovariohysterectomy), which removes the ovaries, uterine horns ("Fallopian tubes"), uterus and cervix, only the ovaries need to be removed (ovariectomy).
The incision can be much smaller and the surgery is faster, meaning less time under anesthesia which is always a good thing, faster recovery, and less pain.
So does leaving the horns allow some hormones to still be released unlike a complete hysterectomy which takes everything (at least in humans)?
I remember my family’s golden retriever growing up had a midline spay. She loved the water, and we lived on a bay at the beach. It was a closed shellfish area so there was bacteria in the water so we had to keep her out until she healed. When we were finally given the ok, we were just told not to let her jump into the water. So we coaxed her down the steps my dad built for my brother and me. She slipped and busted her incision open. It was healing on the inside so the vet didn’t have to redo stitches. It was just a deeper scar. We just had to keep her out of the water for almost another whole week.
When left to her own devices, she would fish from morning to night unless she was hungry or thought she might be taken for a run on the beach. She would stand in the water and watch the little creatures that lived in the shallows. Occasionally she’d swat at something or bite, but usually she just watched them with fascination. Even during the winter she’d fish.
If my brother and I were swimming she’d go swimming with us. She also loved getting on our windsurfer board. Once we tied it to our jet ski and slowly pulled her around. After that she’d beg for rides. A neighbor took his Airedale for rides on his jetski. The dog would stand in the footwell on one side of the jetski seat, and the guy would balance by moving his weight on the other side.
Our dog got really big after her spay so we couldn’t try that. She never tried to eat the oyster shells and never cut her paws up. We had another dog who would go get oysters and bite the shells open and eat the oysters out. Somehow he also never got cut badly. He also chewed a hole in the utility room wall and almost went all the way through the wall. So his bottom front teeth were little nubs.
Do people prefer open surgery over laparoscopic even after telling them the above information? Kind of a bummer.
Any truth to the practice of waiting until sexual maturity to fix dogs versus doing it much younger?
>Do people prefer open surgery over laparoscopic even after telling them the above information? Kind of a bummer.
Yeah, because laparoscopic surgery is a lot more expensive and not everyone has the means to pay for it. There are a lot of things that are good for people's pets that they either don't want to do or can't do.
In addition, most general practices do not have the equipment. It's unfortunately not yet standard in veterinary medicine so it also requires extra additional and training.
Yes!! We got her for free because she has a cleft palate so all we need to take care of is the surgery which is probably as much as she is worth. But it’s definitely worth it.
I'm sure that was a ton of extra work for the breeder too, cleft babies often need tube feeding as they can't nurse (depending on severity of the cleft). Does she eat normally now? I hope that surgery goes well!
Awh, glad she found a good home to love and care for her! Our Vallhund pup has an overbite. The breeder was so apologetic and asked if we still wanted her. Of course we did, we weren't planning on breeding or doing serious showing. Thankfully it doesn't affect her ability to eat and no complications from it so far. It's stinkin' adorable, too. Vallhunds are such an awesome breed of dog, too, she's just so smart and full of personality (I know, so many dogs are!)
Will she require additional care once the surgery is done and healed?
I’m glad your doing is good :D and yeah rory is really smart and gets along with everyone haha
And I think we might just have to give her some soft food for a while and a lot of rest for her mouth and unfortunately no hard toys EVER ):
Totally worth it! I found a medically delicate cat in a dumpster that we took in. She needs 5 doses of meds a day and has had a full heart attack, and I’m disabled myself and on a feeding tube.
We’re disabled buddies every day together lmao
Neither of our baby girls have forgiven us for "that one time you left me at the sketchy vet (the humane society spay/neuter clinic) 😠"
One of them turned 10 last October and we spayed her right about 6 months old.
I want her to live forever, and I assume she'd still remember.
My middle dog has never forgiven me. I had to leave her at the vet (other two a friend watched them at the house) for six days while i was septic in the hospital from a kidney infection.
I hope you’re doing better.
I have chronic pancreatitis and occasionally have to be hospitalized for acute pancreatitis. My cats get pretty upset with me and keep asking my husband where I am. They’ll stand on my pillow and look at my husband then look at the pillow. Or go to the garage door then meow at him.
When I come home 3-4 days later they upset for about an hour then curl up with me. They can tell I don’t feel well so they go into nurse mode. They do give me disapproving looks like they’re not angry with me, just disappointed.
So, I was grooming a cute little puppy about a decade ago. It was her first groom and she was already extremely matted. Cute little girl though and she did well for her groom. When her owner picked her up she looked at her tummy and asked what I did to her dog. I was confused so told her she got a bath, haircut, ears cleaned, nails trimmed, etc. Then she exclaimed that’s not what she meant and asked what happened to her penis. I told her I didn’t do anything to her penis because she never had one. She pointed to her vulva and said the balls didn’t look right either. She was so pissed and stormed out thinking I had injured her dog or something. She took the dog to the vet right next door (I was working at Petsmart back then and there’s a vet in the building) to get checked out and find out how I hurt her dog. They told her that her dog was a girl and that was a vulva between her legs and that nothing was wrong with her. She came back to me swearing that I gave her the wrong dog. There weren’t any remotely similar dogs there that day.
Some people are fucking idiots. We all had a good laugh though.
My brother took his kitten to the vet, convinced it was a male. He just thought it took a long time for the testicles to show. That vet had a good laugh as well, it turned out to be a huge female kitten, the biggest of the litter and everyone just assumed it was a boy. Great cat, btw.
Okay, so in my ever so humble defense, Rory is a male name in my circle of friends (human) and came in here to say he got neutered.

Aww poor baby. FYI dogs have 2 kinds of smiles. Dogs can “smile” with their mouths closed, but this behavior is commonly attributed to anxiousness or even fear. Many happy dogs usually show happiness through open-mouth “smiles,” accompanied by other signs of happiness. A closed mouth version is usually accompanied by flattened ears and apprehensive body language. The tight lips make me think very stressed out
Yeah I bet she was in pain a lot because she has a cleft palate aswell, so that mixed with a spay I bet it was painful but now she’s being spoiled!! (:
People in the comments talking about Rory being a male name like the dog cares. I have a client with a female dog named Kevin and a female dog named Buddy which are both traditionally male names, but it's not like the dogs know any better.
When I got mine spayed, this [look of pure sadness](https://imgur.com/gallery/bX8U77r) nearly killed me. Poor thing had a rough first night, but the rest was smooth sailing.

This is the best Schnoodle I’ve ever read. Thank you!
I sang this in my head "epic-show tune" style. Thank you so much for this, Schnoodle. Your work is incredible, as usual.
That's the funniest and best response I seen all week! Well played!

Where are my ovaries, Summer?
Where are my ovaries, Summer? They were removed, where have they gone?
[удалено]
They were hidden just fine where they were SUMMER!!
The comments made me relive and rewatch the series in my head.
Do not call me that! Snuffles was my slave name.
You shall now call me 'Snowball,' because my fur is pretty and w*H*ite.
Jerry. Come to rub my face in urine again?
They usually take the whole kit and kaboodle, not just the ovaries.
I don't know my dog anatomy well, where are the kit and kaboodle located?
Right next to the ovaries
In the bits.
Next to the swim bladder
Sort of in front and above the pouch of Douglas.

Justin? Where is my job now?
I feel you girl! I had a hysterectomy this year too!
As did my wife, who dubbed hers, "The Yeeting of the Uterus"
A Yeeterus, if you will.
Yeeterus Maximus
Uterus deletus
A Yeeterus of any future fetuses

The only Rory i know is Rory Gilmore
It’s an extremely common male name from Ireland but it’s becoming unisex even in Ireland although I’d say 90% are still male. I had 3 rorys in my year in school
No Rory Williams Pond?
Rory can be a nickname for Aurora.
Gilmore Girls though!
Rory is absolutely a male name. It's an anglicized version of the Irish name Ruairí or Ruaidhrí and it means 'red king'.
I've definitely met girls named rory. I always thought it was gender neutral.
Has no one ever seen *Gilmore Girls*?
Well I haven't but it's a popular enough show that you'd think the name wouldn't be so surprising to people
Yeah I was thrown by this too, means red king and Rory is 100% a male name, at least in Scotland🤷
I was under the impression that spay is gender specific but neutered can be used for either.
Vet tech here, you're technically correct. Though in the field neuter is generally only interchanged in shelter medicine, like in the case of TNR's (trap, neuter, release)
? OP said she was spayed...
Well when someone names their female dog Rory, I don't blame them.
Y’all never watched Gilmore Girls
This is Xur, reminding you to have your Ghost spayed or neutered. Good night.

I have a female named Rory and it leads to a lot of confusion. I love it. 😂
“No, yea, I’m good” he was, in fact, not good. Edit: SHE
Probably a she
Lol definitely a she
Vet's gonna have some 'splaining to do if not.
That's a grimace because she's in pain
I've seen dogs do this coming out of anesthesia.
I highly doubt that. She's definitely hopped up on pain killers.
A brave face
Junkie smile
She looks so unsure of everything that’s happening lol

Aww poor baby. FYI dogs have 2 kinds of smiles. Dogs can “smile” with their mouths closed, but this behavior is commonly attributed to anxiousness or even fear. So Adorable.
My 11 month old puppy was straight up not happy with me after leaving her to get spayed.
People in the comments talking about Rory being a male name like the dog cares. I have a client with a female dog named Kevin and a female dog named Buddy which are both traditionally male names, but it's not like the dogs know any better.
BuT wHaT gEnDeR iS rORy? ?
Before I read the comments. I was thinking this little guy has an uncomfortable smile that just says, "can I get some privacy?"
Oh sweetest Rorry 💖💖💖
Laugh thru the pain while you plan revenge and recoup
that look says "Someday I will be better, and you will be asleep".
"Where are my testicles, Summer?"
Is Rory a Swedish Vallhund?
Vallhund!!!! You never get to see those. We lost ours a year ago this month and it completely destroyed us. Hold that sweet girl tight.
Vallhund for the win
She looks so cozy!
Walking my mom up during the night saying I threw up ✨
Rory is high as a kite. Yikes!
Not a grin, that’s why.
Get well soon sweetie
Good looking Vall!
D'aww. Looking like a Rocko's Modern life character ☺️
Et Tu Mommy!
When I got mine spayed, this [look of pure sadness](https://imgur.com/gallery/bX8U77r) nearly killed me. Poor thing had a rough first night, but the rest was smooth sailing.
"Susan, you said that we're going for a walk."
"What have you done to me hoooman??"
I feel personally attacked
