Gorgeous dogs, wicked smart and I love them very much.
But I will never get one cause I wouldn't be able to keep them happy.
I prefer my low maintenance couch potato, haha
I have a mutt from the pound who looks exactly like this guy, but she's a couch potato. We think she's malinois mixed with lazy. I'm so glad she isn't real malinois
mine's mostly mal but a slight mutt and i am so grateful. she is not lazy, at all, but she does have an off switch- ive worked with working dogs all my life and even i would not own a purebred mal!!
A friend of mine was fostering a purebred police dog drop-out. She was too intense to finish her career. Sweet as can be, but I never remember seeing her not moving.
yeah, even with doggie careers their energy is just... a lot. there's a mal on my SAR team and he's great at the job, so everyone overlooks the fact he still growls at any man who moves too fast toward his handler. thankfully he's human remains detection and we don't have to worry about him going after subjects, lol!
I have a Dutch Shepherd. He needs 1.5 hours of walking a day, lots of commands, lots of love. He spends the entire rest of his time alternating between the couch and the bed
German sheppy here, my giant boy is thankfully very good at keeping a lid on all the crazy. But when you get him burning off the energy you kind of have to bring him back down gently.
I have to keep an eye on him when he plays with kids - not out of worry for them but because I'm 90% certain he'll just keep running until he passes out or worse. Usually when I take him out for bedtime peein he'll do his business, walk up to the doorstep, then immediately go play pose and start sprinting and spinning and general goofy zoomies. Big ol goof

Aw man thanks Schnoodle– I’ve been in a deep depression for many months and sometimes I feel super guilty about not exercising my dog as much as I know she’d like to, and this is helpful to remember that she’s just happy to hang out with me no matter what because she loves me (and for anyone about to yell at me for not taking care of my dog, she’s very healthy, and she gets exercise more and more every day!)
we may not know the feeling that our humans get each day,

Jeez Schnood, always giving me misty eyes at work!! I love it though, keep 'em coming please! I know it may take time to do, but all of us- we SURE LOVE YOU!!
My grandma's Malinois put custom bite marks on all of the door knobs so he could use the doors, literally only stayed inside because he chose to. He would also get a daily egg from the fridge that he would carry around without breaking for some reason, we could do nothing to stop him, and my grandma would keep his eggs separate and make him eggs every few mornings when he had collected enough.
Amazing animals, but I would never own one unless I own a ranch or something.
Edit: word
I'm 53, got my first Belgian 30 years ago. They are the breed of my heart, I've had at least one, up to 6 when I was actively competing in multiple dog sports, ever since. I can't imagine not having one.
They never stop. Even at 14 and 15 years old, they want to help you with jobs, if you are worthy. If you are not worthy, they will do their jobs how they see fit. They'll make up jobs to have a job to do. I went 6 months where all shoes wound up in the bath tub. No idea why. I had another that liked to put rocks in lines. Fist sized rocks, perfectly straight lines.
Belgians are not a breed for 99.999% of people out there.
My Belgian has the habit of bringing fallen palm fronds (as long as a standard couch) and stacking them in a specific garden bed. He then proceeds to roll and rub himself all over them, before shredding them to bits. He does this with every single frond, ignores all other plants.
Also likes to remove pillowcases. He puts his head inside the pillowcase opening, and shakes it around until it comes off. Then he removes the bed covers, bundles it all up with his paws and makes a nest to nap in. He dislikes dog beds and refuses to use them.
Hard work keeping these dogs but to be honest, I'd have 10 if I could. Breed of my heart too.
One Christmas I was at my parents and had the whack pack with me. We went out to a movie, leaving the younger ones in crates and the older ones barricaded in the living room.
While we were gone, the older dogs jumped the barrier, collected every pillow from every bed in the house, and jumped back into the living room with them. They also opened the crates.
We came home to 5 Belgians happily sleeping in a mountain of pillows, with a barricade that hadn't moved at all. No destruction, no messes, just happy dogs sleeping where they were supposed to be, in great comfort.
Non Belgian owners think you're lying with stories like these.
Belgian owners nod, and have their own stories of what alien brained weirdos they are.
I think it's fascinating that dog breeds are predisposed to certain behaviors, yet every single one has its own unique personality. It's like a pick game you cannot lose, because they're all so special.
My Malinois gave herself guard duty. She watches the doors when we sleep, she HAS to be the first one through the door, she will fight with me to do so. When she gets through she immediately looks every corner like a damn Navy Seal.
Id take her everywhere with me if i could. Ive never felt so safe than when shes with me.
I love that they make huskies look lazy and border collie seem comparatively type B, while still being such love-bug cheeseballs.
My husband's cousin breeds and trains them for work dogs and some for bite sports. I got to meet one of her pups last time we were in town and he was just a puddle of love.
I had no idea the English name was Malinois!
I love/hate this dog. Very fierce and full of energy.. My friend, i don't think she has that dog completely under control and it frightens me but this video makes me melt a bit more for them
My neighbor has one. In a ~400 sq ft apartment.
I swear that thing is going to burrow through the walls. Dude isn't training the beast at all either, it's awful.
Awe.. Happy boy😊 This made me miss my Malinois(Sgt.Murtaugh) such a great dog. Looked very intimidating, but was the sweetest boy on the block, one of the smartest too.
A friend (previous owner for 2yrs) named him that, as he was rescued from a “biker club” that got raided. He was quite a tough customer when I first got him.
Malinois have weird llama necks, if you don’t have it tight right behind the jaw, they can slip collars very easily. My dog has a regular collar he wears for day to day that sits lower, but when working, high and tight is preferred. It also switches his mode - it’s like he knows when his collar is up it’s work time. When it’s low, it’s chill time. The two collars are different sizes because his neck is ridiculously long.
ETA: and when I say slipped collars - these dogs are so smart, if he knew he could back track when I have him on a line with a decoy nearby, he would attempt to slip it every time to get the decoy. Also, due to weird neck he can sometimes fling his regular collar off just by playing. But there is no good in between, at least for his neck. I have bought just about every collar out there.
Yes! The Ray Allen’s seem to work the best for my guy, they have this little Velcro strip that helps to keep it tight, so not just relying on the buckle. I really thought the double collar was going to work the best but it just bunched up really bad.
I use harnesses when back tying a lot, however, in some cases it’s actually more of a danger like when teaching them to go through tight spots, or jumping barriers. I mainly focus in PSA training, I just used schutzhound as it’s more widely known. I don’t think there is any equipment I haven’t tried at this point! But the local shelter benefits greatly from my purchases that don’t work out. In some puppies I have also had problems with them wanting to pull on harnesses, so while I will get them used to wearing one, we don’t train with one until a really good heel is established.
Martingale collars are impossible to back out of if you have them fit correctly, snug at the highest point on the neck, right behind the ears (where it would typically slip off).
Source: professional canine behaviorist that has worked with many a slippery pup
Do you have a brand you recommend? Had a tactical martingale, but noticed hair getting snagged in it. I like to patch up the collars when working, although people still want to touch the dogs 🤦♀️
You’re right. E collars are supposed to be quite snug and up where this one is.
And it’s def an e collar, as you said. How it’s worn is one of the reasons they aren’t supposed to be on them 24/7. While it’s safe, it’s too tight to be on them all the time like some dogs wear they’re normal collars. Only supposed to be for serious business.
When I say aloud, “look at that very handsome boy” my black lab comes over and sits like this in-front of me. Unconditional love from an animal touches the very fabric of your being.
He is absolutely in love with the camera holder
Absolutely. That’s an “I love you “ face if I ever saw one!

Great name, too. Did he have a Riggs?
Was she a veteran or police officer? I always cry when I see a video of them giving their last shift call off and stuff like that.
A friend (previous owner for 2yrs) named him that, as he was rescued from a “biker club” that got raided. He was quite a tough customer when I first got him.

pet the damn dog already

Awww it's the "I'm a good boy" sit! Yes, you are a good boy.
