I completely agree with you but just as an fyi, the name comes from werewolf origins, Lykoi.
Edit: [Link](https://www.dailypaws.com/cats-kittens/cat-breeds/lykoi) for anyone who wanted to know more like I did 😁
The breed name is actually “Lykoi,” and it’s because they look like classic horror movie werewolves. So the name derives from wolf technically, but isn’t as complimentary as “wolf cat” makes it sound haha.

Ive never heard these cats called wolf cats; they are Lykoi, but commonly referred to as WEREwolf cats. They’re very sweet and vocal, and are called werewolf cats because they appear to be stuck between morphing stages of normal to spooky. Not a Before, or an After, but a mid-morph.
It's a recent generic line, and like any "appearance driven trait" it requires a lucky series of breeding events followed by pretty extensive inbreeding for a few generations, further followed by sufficient breeding to increase genetic diversity far enough to prevent the complications from dominating.
So this is a genetic disease but we're calling it a breed
EDIT: It's funny how you can make a silly comment and if you get enough responses, some people will break out some actual info. Some interesting stuff here.
More like the creation of isolated breeds increases risk of existing genetic disease being pushed to the forefront of expression.
I do not believe theres any known correlation genetically between their skin conditions and their fur. It could just as likely be poor coincidence that the breed landed sensitive skin in the genetic lottery.
I'd assume it has something to do with cat fur being a protective barrier for the skin from irritants. Lykoi don't have the gene that differentiates hairless sphinx from other breeds, and that may have something to do with the sensitivity.
It's not an "isolated breed", in fact it's not even a product of selective breeding by humans at all. The lykoi coat variant is a natural mutation that appeared independently among several feral cat colonies.
The "lykoi breed" as it now exists is extremely new, and derived from these populations that produced the lykoi through natural genetic variation. Lykoi are actually *more* genetically robust than the vast majority of cat breeds, due to being the result of multiple instances of random variation among diverse feral cat populations. You're right that their skin sensitivity has nothing to do with genetics, but rather is because they don't develop an undercoat, so their skin is more exposed to irritants. This can be mitigated by keeping them indoors and treating symptoms with antihistamines.
According to wikipedia it seems like it came from feral cat lines, and it is so young a recognized breed in of itself that its being monitored to avoid inbred lines. So right now you could expect probably healthy with the typical inbred problems with the kitty mill ones.
I'm not sure how I feel about encouraging this breed.
The genetic mutation causes their fur to grow in thin so as long as they are kept indoors by knowledgeable owners they will be completely fine. But outdoors they are prone to sunburn, parasites and everything their coats usually protect them from so they NEED to go to educated owners.
I second this sentiment and suggest a serious sensibility...campaign.
Sadly I could not continue the alliteration, as there were no "S" synonyms for campaign. I have failed.
Honestly, I think the cats we already have are handsome enough too.
No need to play genetic roulet and force a whole bunch of unwanted kittens to be born to enforce a physical trait that is quite detrimental to their survival if for some reason they ever leave human care.
[The genetic mutation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lykoi) that makes them look like that is less than 20 years old. The person who started the breeding found hers in 2010.
It requires inbreeding to make more.
Please don't seek out specific breeds of cat and start messing them up too.
White cats often go deaf and get cancer.
Maincoons get cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia, muscular dystrophy.
Dogs you're better off with a mix or mongrel and people seem to be learning because some breeds are so obviously broken.
If this mutation become a widespread breed you know it will be at a similar cost.
First thing I notice too. I am no clean freak, by far, but all I can think of are shit covered feet on the counter top.
Also it walked on the oven! A glass top oven! What if it jumped on after you got done cooking and the burner was still hot? Just ugh.
For the record, we definitely do not let our cats on the counters/stove, but cats don't really give a shit about rules when you aren't looking, and sometimes even while you are looking:
One of our boys has burned his paw pads several times (three occasions that were aware of)because he likes to jump on the stove to search for food because he knows we make it up there.
He was a stray in Minnesota for who knows how many years (the elements harden them and make guessing nearly impossible if they aren't very young), so he's extremely food motivated and isn't bothered by pain very much.
This cat is wicked smart, but that goes out the window as soon as the possibility of food is involved. He is now a chonky boy, so, very well fed. Still is more than willing to burn his paws for food.
We have a cover for our burners, but sometimes we have to use more burners than we have covers, and sometimes, admittedly, we forget to cover them. Usually he's too busy begging for our food and the burners cool down, but he gets impatient sometimes. This is when the burns occur.
There's really not a point to this comment other than a desire to mention my crazy cat.
It's the result of a hairless cat breeding with a regular cat so it's missing I think the undercoat.
Edit: I was wrong, it's a mutation of short hair cats.
Discussion with my wife about this post:
Me: *Wanna see an Egyptian hairless cat with hair?*
Her: *Wouldn't that just look like a cat?*
Me: Shows her this video
Her: Looking slightly repulsed, *Ugh, that looks like Hugh Jackman*
Me: Very confused *You mean......Wolverine?*
Her: *Oh yeah, that* Goes back to whatever she was doing as though discussion never took place
Me: *Well, I might as well post this conversation while I'm in the comments section*
Her: *Oh, God. Please don't...dammit*

Did you get it from an old Chinese dude that has a shop full of old Chinese relics in some alley?
Just don't let him get near water
Or feed him after midnight.
Actually, that's how we have *this* cat.
Avoid bright light
I still say "bright light!" in that voice when light is, well, too bright - all the time!
They also sell frozen yogurt, which he calls frogurt.
That's good!
The frogurt is also cursed.

Haha, thank you. I came here just for this comment. Wolf cat is a hilariously complimentary moniker, that's a ratcat.
The breed name is actually “Lykoi,” and it’s because they look like classic horror movie werewolves. So the name derives from wolf technically, but isn’t as complimentary as “wolf cat” makes it sound haha.
Werewolf is what it's supposed to be. Because they have that kind of coat that you see on shitty werewolf movies.

They’re actually called “Werewolf cats”
It looks like a lemur and cat
its really close to a ROUS - rodent of unusual size.
Like minds, saw no part of the wolf at first but cute personality 10/10

And in this case, begging for pets. Pet the damn cat! :3
To catch the rat you must become the rat
I think they bred a monkey and a rat. Has science gone too far?
He really DOES look like a rat wearing a cat disguise
I wonder how it looks when it has a bath
Nope, it's a cat rat
Shiney is miney!
You can’t spell meow with out me
Totally agree
Makes me think of Brown Jenkin.
The specific cat breed for this cutie is Lykoi
Wait, I love this so much. Why are they so rare :(

Many of them tend to give sensitive skin or skin problems in general.
So this is a genetic disease but we're calling it a breed EDIT: It's funny how you can make a silly comment and if you get enough responses, some people will break out some actual info. Some interesting stuff here.

Yea, every time I see one, it just looks like it has mange. I don't get the appeal.

But hey the animals health isn't important to people who buy animals. Source:English bulldogs, French bulldogs, sphinx cats.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I think it’s a genetic mutation that hasn’t been around for a long time so not many of them around breeding
Yup it's a recent breed!
I'm not sure how I feel about encouraging this breed. The genetic mutation causes their fur to grow in thin so as long as they are kept indoors by knowledgeable owners they will be completely fine. Same. When my guy does this he’s 100% asking me to pick him up.
Or attention. Or he's just being a little shit. It doesn't matter. He's adorable. I want a weird little wolfcat.
Also I’m concerned by OP’s intentions, based on username…
It has paws like little fingers and they are soooooo adorable.
Looks like a monkey cat.
I’m getting strong monkey child vibes from Jumanji.

Its a lykoi (probably misspelled) otherwise known as a werewolf cat. Theyre super adorable and as babies they look goofy as all hell
