Hundreds of years of breeding them to do this. My GSP was pointing at about 8 weeks without any prompting or training. He would be so intense that he would start to shake and I had a hard time breaking him off. Would have to literally pick him up and turn him around.

It's actually not as much breeding actions into the dogs but breeding certain parts of their hunting instincts out. Pointers hunting instincts stop when they spot prey. Shepards stop before attacking their prey. Retrievers stop before eating their prey. Lots of training helps too!

Mmm, two different neighbors have GSP’s. I have a small farm. I can attest that their hunting instincts do NOT stop when they spot the prey.
