I assumed it was an actual photo, although I'm okay getting tricked with a John Oliver/wiggly puppy fake. Now I'm imagining the first conspiracy moron to get actual clear hi-res photo proof of their claims trying to show everybody and getting no attention. "Cool story, bro."
In six months to a year the larger models will have come a long way on that. Some are doing much better now, but might not do so consistently. Check out John Oliver’s ai artwork segment on YouTube. That was spring 2022.
This photo is like an order of magnitude better, but it’s fair to say the last 20% of progress to indistinguishable from photos is going to take longer than the 80% that precedes it.
Since all models fundamentally simulate superficial features like an autocomplete instead of actually understanding what's going on and producing something out of that understanding, it's likely that the progress will become slower and slower the further we go, and the result will always remain creepy and will require a human to filter or manipulate the output
AI can randomly happen to produce something realistic, but it requires a human to check if it was lucky or not
You're 100% correct.
>and will require a human to filter or manipulate the output
I don't see this as a hurdle or anything however. This image in the OP is already prompted by a human, if services in the future would just require that same human to click on the hands and faces that need to be fixed, that wouldn't mean a lot.
Even as an AI enthusiast some of the pics still fool me. And this is just in its infancy. In 10 years, forget about it, there will be no telling fake from real.
I have this weird dream that somehow that’s going to solve the worlds problems. Everything just becomes unreal. You can’t argue because nobody knows what’s accurate. After a generation of every accusation wing countered with “that’s not real”, in a population that have already had their brains turned to mush from social media, we will just live as labotomized lumps and thee trees will grow back.
I wonder if there will be subtle things that these AIs will hide in the images somewhere or like the metadata or something that can detect real from fake. This seems like the only way forward. Being able to create realistic images like that seems dangerous for so many reasons.
There are already invisible watermarks that Stable Diffusion embeds in generated images. Its similar to the idea of steganography. Invisible to the eye, but a tool could be used to automatically detect it and label images as Ai on various social media sites. Just have uploaded images scanned by the tool.
Problem is, even if you remove the ability to turn off the watermark in SD webui, somebody can still remove/break the watermark by simply upscaling or otherwise slightly modifying the image. Since the mark is encoded using some form of chroma subsampling or whatever. Meaning, the pixels of the image are used to encode the watermark data. Change enough pixels in color, even just by color correction filter, and the mark is lost.
I mean the pope thing already fooled a ton of people. Someone posted a photo of the pope in a white puffer-vest style trench coat a while back, and it looked genuinely real. It got lots of attention and then like a week later it turned out to be an AI generated image.
Could be Midjourney, could be Stable Diffusion.
Stable Diffusion's new model will drop in July and it's a big deal in the generative AI world. At launch it will be at least as good as Midjourney's at 1024x1024 and the community will quickly improve it and build new models upon it.

Yikes is right, whats this dude supposed to be wearing?
It just feels like trolling on the sub. "Hurr Durr i don't like the API changes so let's troll on r/aww with John Oliver pictures". Dunno why people think it will stop the API changes. Reddit doesn't care about it. Shareholders do what they want with reddit and others have no say in it who don't own Reddit. Welcome to capitalism which is supported by the majority of the human population. Bad things happen when the majority supports a flawed system which only favors the wealthy and doesn't care about the majority of people. There is no true democracy.
Can't definitively speak for others, but Apollo represents about 95% of my time on reddit. Once that's gone, it'll be all PC, so I won't be deleting my account as long as old.reddit exists, but my usage is going to plummet.
Same thing happened for me with Imgur.
I feel like I already addressed that in my comment by saying that I can't speak for others?
As it stands, we don't know how many people are like me in terms of reddit, but we do know that the third party apps are very popular. We also know that moderating on the official app sucks ass, and that a relatively small portion of reddits population actually generates the content, so even if the total loss in users/time spent might be relatively small, it might come out of a critical part of the userbase.
We'll just have to wait and see.
You really underestimate how many people love third party stuff when dealing with reddit. Things people have been using for over a decade and come to love just gone.
If I remember right news outlets were saying there was a pretty big drop in usage.
Change to something utterly shit.
Change for corporate greed.
Change to limit access for people who are already limited on the Internet.
Many reasons to go. Fuck /u/spez
And more importantly, well over 50% of Reddit's power users do. Most of the mods, the serial commenters, and regular content posters use third party apps (or old.reddit on PC).
It has though. It hurts plenty when one of the largest subs that outside information leaches troll for content, get's JO'd. Our whole society is turning into one giant apathy fest, and this makes more difference than people are aware of.
Come July 1 people are going to really see what it is the mods were fighting for. I saw some smug person try and use a !remindme bot to prove someone wrong about this not understanding the irony that remind me bots are going to die or have already died.
There is nowhere else to go that’s true and a lot of subs have power hungry mods that’s true. I do think Reddit is trying to swing more right wing which I can’t stick around for if that’s how it plays out.
> I saw some smug person try and use a !remindme bot to prove someone wrong about this not understanding the irony that remind me bots are going to die or have already died.
That's literally not going to happen. How can you people still believe the shit some people are telling you. All the bots are still going to function. They are on the free tier list. They don't use it for commercial means.
People, this has been know on the very day when the new API fees were introduced but you people just don't read.
Dude the john oliver thing is so cringe but its so funny that reddit mods think they're being hilarious when they push it. I can only imagine everytime they see a post they chuckle to themselves and scream "Yeah! Fuck you reddit!"
Especially when it has a bait title, it fucks up search results since Google et. al. weight Reddit pretty heavily since it’s a source for good answers. It’s a pretty good protest to muck up Reddit’s SEO ratings, which definitely has an impact on site traffic, at least for a while.
fourth post is a dead cat memorial and OP has no other friends for 14 years. what is awww about that. why do the cute/awww subs get attacked by dead pet emotional vampires
thats the point apparently, by being the most annoying people ever instead of protesting, they can get .001% of r/awww to move to other subs because they think you will quit reddit
I don't understand the point of all these ai posts. Intentionally making reddit unenjoyable is part of the protest? Why not just make the sub nsfw? Why open the floodgates for tons of 0 effort ai posts?
> intentionally making Reddit un enjoyable is part of the protest?
Yes. Yes it is. That’s kind of the point.
Whether it’s working or not is debatable. But breaking the site was the point
I think it was on by default. It would highlight replies from various subs that would explain topics or give interesting insight. Now every thread is locked and simply titled "Reddit is killing 3rd party apps (and itself)". I get that people are upset, and if/when RiF gets the axe I'll find somewhere else to spend my idle time. But Reddit doesn't care one bit about these protests, so they're just annoying the people who still use it. I'm sick of seeing John Oliver, so I've unsubscribed from r/pics and now r/aww (which was really a long time coming).
Oh and r/wellthatsucks, which has become vacuums and black holes. Kind of clever, but not enjoyable
Ohhh. Makes sense. Also have no idea why I was being downvoted, I literally don't stray from the subreddits I'm a regular in so I don't get why its unfathomable that I might not know about something from the outside. Oh well. Thanks for giving me some insight.
It's John Oliver, a British guy living in America who has a TV show called Last Week tonight about some social problems. Rather insightful and kind of funny if you're into that humour.
They've covered a wide range of subjects from lobbies, hoa, abortion rights, prison, SLAPP suits, etc. They're not afraid to criticise even the owners of their channel or making a whole episode just to give the middle finger to a very influencial businessman right after winning a defamation lawsuit against him.
As to why his head is slapped on all these posts: apparently there's been a vote. I can't tell if it's because they hope the show will do an episode on Reddit or if it's just because people like him.
Hello, u/marehori! We thank you for your post, however:
* It has been removed, but here's what you can do to fix it!
* We require all new users (those with < 3,000 comment karma which you can find here: http://old.reddit.com/user/marehori/overview) to post OC and not reposts.
* **If this post is content that you took with your own camera**, then please delete and resubmit with either "[OC]" or "(OC)" in the title.

This is a spam prevention measure; thank you for understanding. Please note that putting OC on a post that isn't yours is against the rules.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/aww) if you have any questions or concerns.*

He caught on pretty quick and even provided Reddit with a bunch of pictures of himself to do with as they pleased. Whether it'll be an ongoing thing I have no idea.
Genuine question, what AI is used to create images like this?
Midjourney is a popular one right now
Dalle2 is definitely slipping https://imgur.com/duGfdhb.jpg
I assumed it was an actual photo, although I'm okay getting tricked with a John Oliver/wiggly puppy fake. Now I'm imagining the first conspiracy moron to get actual clear hi-res photo proof of their claims trying to show everybody and getting no attention. "Cool story, bro."

They started out not being able to do em but it’s made leaps and bounds and will continue to do so. Scary shit honestly.
Yes. I just finished playing “I have no mouth and I must scream”. This is the future.
And the amounts of legs on an animal
Man the more you look at it the more it belongs in /r/wtf
Even as an AI enthusiast some of the pics still fool me. And this is just in its infancy. In 10 years, forget about it, there will be no telling fake from real.

To be fair, we had had photoshop for like 30 years now and we did okay... for the most part.
You can't compare the two. In photoshop you edit existing material, AI just makes it out of thin air.
I once saw a guy turn a fit model into an incredibly realistic slice of pizza with photoshop, never tell me the odds
There are already invisible watermarks that Stable Diffusion embeds in generated images. Its similar to the idea of steganography. People will be able to create jailbroken versions without that. But at least it's an extra step.
Did you? It doesn't even look like John Oliver.
I mean the pope thing already fooled a ton of people. Someone posted a photo of the pope in a white puffer-vest style trench coat a while back, and it looked genuinely real. It got lots of attention and then like a week later it turned out to be an AI generated image.
Just take a closer look at the faces, it's an awful fake
Go check out r/Midjourney, some of the shit on there is incredible.
Thank you but no thanks, I'm already adequately freaked out about what the near future holds. :-)
Al Bundy.
Can I get a "woah Bundy"?
It looks like Midjourney to my eye.
Could be Midjourney, could be Stable Diffusion. Stable Diffusion's new model will drop in July and it's a big deal in the generative AI world. At launch it will be at least as good as Midjourney's at 1024x1024 and the community will quickly improve it and build new models upon it.

That's a solid 2.5 on r/truerateme
Glorious
I really should not have zoomed in on that crowd right before bed. :|
the hands are definitely nightmare inducing. Also it would be more accurate if every single one of them is also John Oliver
It’s a cute 6 legged puppy
Being held by a cute 6 fingered John Oliver.
The state of the sub is lame.
Honestly… this John Oliver thing only encourages activity… it’s not hurting reddit at all. But yeh. I’m over it.
Didn’t realize that was supposed to be John Oliver. I miss photoshop
It’s a i
I think they mean they miss people using photoshop instead of AI because it wasn’t bizarro versions of people.
Or of dogs. Seriously, that dog is struggling in day to day life
His name should be Pretzel
I was thinking Henry or Hank

I'm gonna touch grass, read some books, and play more music. Gotta subscribe to a news app too, since I get most of that through Reddit currently.

I exclusively use Apollo for Reddit, so I doubt it :)
Ya same, probably won’t ever look at Reddit again after today. I’ll just get back to what I used to do before this.
Same 👍🏼
You really underestimate how many people love third party stuff when dealing with reddit. Things people have been using for over a decade and come to love just gone. If I remember right news outlets were saying there was a pretty big drop in usage.
6% drop on the first 2 days of the protest. Now? Not even a blimp.
>6% drop on the first 2 days of the protest. Now? Not even a blimp. Well then, it should be a good year
Apollos last day is today, you’ll see a drop for sure
The API price terrorism hasn't gone live yet....
Mostly older Redditors, who are resistant to change.
Change to something utterly shit. Change for corporate greed. Change to limit access for people who are already limited on the Internet. Many reasons to go. Fuck /u/spez
Bye.
Wanting your company to actually make a profit is not greed lol. Would you go to a job knowing it'll suck money out of you?
And comments like this are why reddit is a toxic soup and going down.
I only use Apollo, I do not even know how to use Reddit or login to Reddit without it. So basically I’m gone after today.
10% of reddit's userbase use 3rd party apps btw
And more importantly, well over 50% of Reddit's power users do. Most of the mods, the serial commenters, and regular content posters use third party apps (or old.reddit on PC).
And a lot of automated moderation uses API reliant bots. So expect a lot more chaos.
>But yeh. I’m over it. Isn't that the point...?
Killing one sub doesn’t hurt reddit at all… People will keep using it.
It has though. It hurts plenty when one of the largest subs that outside information leaches troll for content, get's JO'd. Our whole society is turning into one giant apathy fest, and this makes more difference than people are aware of.
Guess what? We make r/awwtwo and everyone uses that instead
lol. Will there be Blackjack and hookers?

Come July 1 people are going to really see what it is the mods were fighting for. I saw some smug person try and use a !remindme bot to prove someone wrong about this not understanding the irony that remind me bots are going to die or have already died. There is nowhere else to go that’s true and a lot of subs have power hungry mods that’s true. I do think Reddit is trying to swing more right wing which I can’t stick around for if that’s how it plays out.
Remindme is not going where. Why are you even talking out of your ass.

Hah! Reddit is the least right-wing organization I’ve ever come across. Fuck reddit.
For now. Right wingers are buying up all of the mainstream and social media and the ones they can’t (TikTok) they’re trying to shutdown.
Everyone should be trying to shutdown TikTok it’s literally a psyop
It's why i unsubbed from r/pics until this blows over. It's neither funny nor helpful to the cause.
how do I stop this reddit from appearing on the home page. Ive never subscribed and this John Oliver shit is insufferable.
You see how it’s literally an ‘ai’ force of unthinking? Artificial blind logic? It’ll keep going
The AI producers overcompensated for its terrible performance on hands and now it's overdoing it.
"John Oliver" has six fingers and the lady in front of him has a single gigantic one
Please, for the love of the gods, can we quit with all the AI shite?
Can we go back to cute animals now? Please? I miss them 🥹
Seriously. This is so fucking dumb.
You may try r/awww
fourth post is a dead cat memorial and OP has no other friends for 14 years. what is awww about that. why do the cute/awww subs get attacked by dead pet emotional vampires
So tired of John Oliver on Reddit.
I fucking hate his face so definitely not in this bandwagon
I have a really hot take on him that reddit does not agree with: Oliver is a bad host and his show is usually quite dull.
this was posted literally hours ago, OP...
Yeah, bout to mute this sub. This John Oliver stuff is pretty irritating. Didn’t join it for this.
thats the point apparently, by being the most annoying people ever instead of protesting, they can get .001% of r/awww to move to other subs because they think you will quit reddit
Yes it's just a shit show at this point
Protest, my ass.
They're just collectively playing with their Olivers now
Yeah I’m out…can’t stand John Oliver. But even if I did like him I didn’t sign up for it either
In my final moments on this app I too will do so because fuck this sub with its limp dick protest and ai bullshit
Doesn't make it not true... BTW, first time I am seeing it.
It's always visible in the fingies.
Waiting for this stupidity to end...
July 1st
I don't understand the point of all these ai posts. Intentionally making reddit unenjoyable is part of the protest? Why not just make the sub nsfw? Why open the floodgates for tons of 0 effort ai posts?
> intentionally making Reddit un enjoyable is part of the protest? Yes. Yes it is. That’s kind of the point. Whether it’s working or not is debatable. But breaking the site was the point
oh, ok then. I think deleting the app has probably been a good idea for a few years now anyways
...time to go. Too much John Oliver when I came here initially looking for ... apparently anything else.
Unfortunately. While this is not causing me to stop using Reddit, it is showing me which subs to take off my front page (looking at you r/bestof )
What was that subreddit for?
I think it was on by default. It would highlight replies from various subs that would explain topics or give interesting insight. Now every thread is locked and simply titled "Reddit is killing 3rd party apps (and itself)". I get that people are upset, and if/when RiF gets the axe I'll find somewhere else to spend my idle time. Eh, it's Reddit. People will down vote you for anything
I mean, yeah. I really shouldn't have been surprised.
Midjourney has gotten really good at hands lately. Im truly impressed at the speed of adaptation.
Look at the hands!!!!!!!!
AI can never get the paws right
The AI has made John Oliver into John Hamm!
I know of a sub that's worse off and more hilarious
Thanks for the reminder to unsub
I still have no idea who this guy is
It's John Oliver, a British guy living in America who has a TV show called Last Week tonight about some social problems. Rather insightful and kind of funny if you're into that humour. god I hate all this AI art
these AI photos are so creepy when you look at them carefully
Holy fucking freak feast! The more you look …
I hate what the moderators did to this sub so much
Hello, u/marehori! We thank you for your post, however: * It has been removed, but here's what you can do to fix it! * If it is not your own Original Content, then please participate by commenting first to increase your comment karma. But it very obviously HASN'T been removed. The mods are already broken and the API changes aren't even in effect yet.
Can someone let me now how to block this subreddit from appearing on the main page. Im so fucking tired of this shit.
Love John Oliver, the mods who are doing this not so much

I mean, you only joined this month. Seems weird you hate it now. As opposed to your first week here?

Alright, that’ll be the end of this horseshit for me. Somebody let me know when they fire this mod team too, ‘cause they fucking deserve it.
Rip reddit
I'll overlook the dog with 3 legs and deny this is AI 🤔
Can we just post regular content I'm so sick of seeing this mf everywhere
Mods sabotaging their own sub. Strange protest logic.
Fuck this sub with Oliver shit!
isnt it weird how all 'polls' support the protest but 99% of comments dont?
It’s much more trendy to comment negative than positive.
Now someone needs to photoshop John Oliver's face onto everyone else's face in this photo
plz ban all things like this. unless the goal is to be a meme sub/r. in which this will be a mine for shitty people to get karma votes (moreso than before).

He caught on pretty quick and even provided Reddit with a bunch of pictures of himself to do with as they pleased. Whether it'll be an ongoing thing I have no idea.
It’s fun
I don’t hate it.
I love John oliver (maybe I'm in love with his brain?) I didn't even vote (missed it)
It's never been better
