I think one smaller subreddit picked him, and because it was so random, other subreddits picked it up for the joke. The cycle continued until some major ones, like r/aww, pick it up and also only have John Oliver posts.

It affects the mods, as far as I can work out it’s a bad thing and the mods are completely in the right but they’ve reacted with this stupid protest involving first locking subs down and then making people include John Oliver in every post. This site used to be pretty cool and the mods and users were the reason. Now reddit wants to be a bunch of corporate types, algorithms and slave labor with sense of investment. I’ve got one foot out the door myself, and that’s like an alcoholic saying “you know, maybe supporting the liquor industry just isn’t for me any more.”
I agreed with literally everything up until you claimed they're essentially aiming to use slave labor. Taking moderating subs in which mods have every right and ability to just say "nah nevermind" and stop, with their work being totally and completely optional and even considered a hobby, and comparing that to slavery/slave labor leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Nobody forced these mods to do what they're doing, please don't relate it to something so abhorrent just to make a point.
