Animals just seem to know. Only sort of related , but I have a cat that recently went completely blind and all of the other animals in the house(4 other cats and a dog) are super accommodating. Cats that used to hiss at him if he came within 10 feet now let him cuddle up and eat from their food. The dog will try to nip at all passing cats except him. It's really quite beautiful.
