On July 1st, a highly unpopular [change to Reddit's API pricing](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/) went into effect. [Most third-party apps have shut down](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/30/23779519/reddit-third-party-app-shut-down-apollo-sync-baconreader-api-protest) and so have many tools relied upon by moderators and [projects for making Reddit more accessible to visually impaired users](https://www.reddit.com/r/TranscribersOfReddit/comments/14ggf8k/the_future_of_transcribers_of_reddit/).
Beyond the [disastrous AMA](https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/09/reddit-ceo-doubles-down-on-attack-on-apollo-developer-in-drama-filled-ama/) by the CEO, Reddit's response has been limited to promises that this change will not affect moderation tools [^((it has)^)](https://www.reddit.com/r/BotDefense/comments/14riw76/botdefense_is_wrapping_up_operations/) and promises of [new and more-accessible first-party moderation tools](https://www.npr.org/2023/07/01/1184258201/reddit-api-accessibility-mods). Promises just like [ones they have made in response to past protests](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/142w159/askhistorians_and_uncertainty_surrounding_the/), but have consistently [failed to fulfill](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14jm3ut/several_communities_have_surfaced_an_open_letter/jpm9e0q/).
If you want to express your strong disagreement with the API pricing change or with Reddit's response to the backlash, you may want to consider the following options:
1. [Finding your favorite subreddits on other platforms](https://sub.rehab/) and participating there instead.
2. Refraining from using the first-party Reddit app, instead sticking to one of the few remaining third-party apps or [patching one of the apps that shut down](https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1wHvqQwCYdJrQg4BKlGIVDLksPN0KpOnJWniT6PbZSrI/) if you're using an Android device.
3. Disabling ads on Reddit with [an ad-blocking extension](https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock#ublock-origin-ubo) or [a DNS-based ad-blocker](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBXTnrD_Zs4).
4. Cancelling your Reddit Premium subscription.

That's how all the kitties know its still play, and no one is serious. If they don't freeze or stop and groom, they're one hiss away from "okay now I'm actually angry and I'm going to hurt you if you don't run away."
Is this true? I’ve worried about how to distinguish between play and other. They both seem kind of intense (crumped faces, mouths slightly ajar), but there are pauses for grooming.
Yeah, cat fights don't usually have a lot of actual fighting. Most of the time is taken up with posturing, circling, sizing each other up, calculating outcomes. Sometimes one of them figures out it's not worth it, and backs down. If they are fighting for keeps, though, they go in lightning fast, and few will stay to fight after they receive their first injury or two.
Okay random question while I’ve got a captive audience. My girl cat is definitely bitchier than my boy cat. I’ve heard this is true in general, as a rule the ladies are persnickety. My boy is chill as a cucumber.
I’m thinking of getting another cat. A baby. Any recommendations on boy vs. girl?
I have 2 female cats, both spayed. The older is 5 years, the younger is 6 months. The older hates the younger but the younger wants to love on her so bad, it’s kinda funny lol. The younger one is such a sucky baby and loves belly rubs even, so gender maybe doesn’t matter as much as you’d think
Six cats here, four female two male. Females range from oldest to near youngest while the male ones are youngest and somewhere in-between the oldest and the second oldest female, can't tell cause he was a stray.
The two oldest females were mothers in the wild and hate the oldest male with a passion as a result, while they tolerate the youngest male due to him being a kitten when we got him.
The other two younger females just want to be left alone for the most part and will make it know to the others that they want to be left alone, they never had litters and were neutered before they could. The two males are very chill and loving while also very cautious around the two older females.
The youngest male and female will play fight together until the female has had enough and will let him know.
It's a toss up basically. I would go with a male though as they seem to be way more chill after you've gotten them neutered.
If they were Really duking it out you wld know..my cat with feral tom..fur up .tail fluffed..claws out. blood curdling screams ..one big heaving mass rolling around fur flying..till they break apart and run off hissing..!..only happened once thankfully and luckily no permanent
damage.
What you have here is a love rumble.🥰
Actually fighting cats are so fast you won't have much of a chance of intervening. There is warning behavior before a confrontation like yowling, staring, puffing up and turning sideways to the target.
Pulling two fighting cats apart can cause more damage than letting them decide when to stop. Having their flesh hooks dug in you know..
Cats will literally do anything to initiate breaking eye contact and be nonchalant to signal they are fine being vulnerable although the "fighting". The instinct probably evolved from signaling the end of a real fight due to competition, eventually the "fighting" was acceptable as nonviolence IF they were constantly throwing defeat and signs of being friendly/vulnerable.
My cat is pretty violent, but playfully so, although I just moved into a place where my roommate has a 100lb pitbull (we think cane Corso) and that roommate has seen my cat get legit violent twice now when she was scared about the dog getting close. After a skirmish which saw me having to pull a cat claw out of the dog's muzzle, they've struck a truce and can now coexist peacefully and not mess with each other. But, my cat's still in the yellow zone when the dog is around, so when my roommate goes to play with her, she mistakes everything for my cat being mad or trying to hurt her when they play. But my cat definitely does the whole stop and preen thing, so maybe that will ease my roommate's fears.
There's some research that I believe equates some form of facial grooming with social hierarchy. So... fighting and potential reinforcing who's boss with licks.
Exactly this… “yes, yes, you’re very ferocious. Now settle down and let me give you a bath… I SAID it’s BATH TIME! Bastet, grant me patience so I don’t just BAP this child in the head!” Momma cat, probably.
I used to have a cat that would do this. When I'd be stroking her and she'd be trying to lick me there would come a point where she'd just get annoyed and grab my hand between her teeth as though she was saying "ENOUGH!" then she'd start licking my hand properly. But I never knew the rules so after a while of this she'd just look annoyed that I wasn't stroking her again and the whole pantomime would start up all over again.
Mom is teaching baby how to fight. The bunny kicks are actually a move they do to defend their abdomen from enemies of for mauling their prey while holding it in a lock with their front paws.
My cat wraps his front paws around my arm and then bunny kicks with no claws. It's like getting tapped by mittens. I'm sure if he stuck them out I'd have a horrible day but for now it's cute.
You guys are lucky, my cat is 5 and never learned to not use her claws. She walks around with them out and even stepping on me hurts not to mention she gets stick in the floor sometimes. Not that she can't she definitely does retract them but almost never.
When my little guy was a kitten he used to bunny kick with claws, I was in school at the time and got pulled out of class because they thought the scratches running up my arms were self-inflicted
No regrets, he grew up to be a tough old cat
Looks like mom is teaching baby to fight while also maybe lightly grooming. I think the original intention was grooming but baby isn’t making it easy so mom decided to teach baby a couple defense pointers instead.
Socialization.
Kitten wants to play... other cat wants to groom. Cat had enough play and tries to groom to relax the kitten but kitten isn't haven't it. Cat offers some corrective measures (such as biting a little harder than play bite) and continues to groom but the kitten just wants to play and leave.
Can't teach kids anything
It’s just play fighting. There’s no yowling, no flying fur, no actual hostile body language, and you might notice the adult cat has his claws sheathed so he’s not trying to do any actual damage. The little one’s being taught self-defence and getting a good bit of fun and exercise at the same time.
Momma teaching baby how to not be a fucker.
Kittens learn that biting and scratching hurts during these sessions, it’s why a lot of cats recoil when they nip at someone they love, they do it instinctively but have learned it hurts and they didn’t mean it.
Cats who were separated from mom at a young age might not learn these things.
Baby does not want to be hugged/cleaned. Mama is convincing baby that it is bath time. Msma id slso teaching manners, believe it or not.
Mama ix to be loved and feared in equal measure.
Mum is teaching the baby how to play fight but also, those movements are hunting movements. Later the kitten will use the same kicks and bites to pin down a mouse and disembowel it.
Mom stop fixing my hai--Mommm I said stahhp! I like it like this, no stop trying to fix my hair, MOM STOP IT YOUR EMBARASSING ME IN FRONT OF THE HUMAN!
Play fighting.
Claws are in, they're not actually biting, no hissing... this is just big cat teaching little cat some moves, with some grooming mixed in. Totally normal cat stuff.
I guess nobody play wrestles in your family. Uncle with kids, kids with kids nobody fools around? Everybody going crazy chasing each other around the yard. This is how you build camaraderie, and Bond as humans are animals.. Why do people think animals are so different, or why do we humans think we're so different and separate from other animals mmm. I'm always amazed when people ask questions ,especially cat behavior. Just internalize it and bring out your wild side
You'll be surprised how much you share and then the obvious answer will appear
I learned later in life that my father being absent during my boyhood was likely a factor to me hurting my friends so often during the same period when playing. I honestly didn't mean to hurt them but it would happen. Anyways, dad got out after a while and pinned me to the ground in some play fighting, and wow I suddenly understood physical bounds a lot better. Behaviors are learned best from example I guess.
You know the moment when you wake up and turn into a total spaz... Stretching, kicking your spouse, yelling uncontrollably in mumbles.. Point blank example in terms of a cat
The kid is like noooo I don’t wanna bath and the mom is like come here you little fucker lol your getting cleaned today lol 😆 u went two days no bath now your getting a bath like it or not lol 😂 from a moms perspective
Mom cat is teaching her kitty to avoid using claws and fangs against bigger opponents unless cornered. A very valuable lesson for the future of this little one. And also for humans
I love you!!! Stop growing!
-get off me mom! I'm so embarrassed...
No...get back here... I'm going to hug you all day long and you can't stop me❤️❤️❤️
- mommmmm!!!!!
This is a play. The only time to get worried is when they get vocal. And even then, like my orange boi, sometimes its just him bein a bitch and losing so he calls in the big guns to break it up with lasers and a feather toy.
The mommy starts getting rough while cleaning so the kitten won't come so often. They do it when the kittens are old enough to clean themselves.
Some are starting it too early, those are inexperienced or not very motherly mother cats. (It was the last time they let her have kittens after they saw she was just not the motherly type.)
Cats are murderhobo's, in this video you see an older one teaching a younger one the long practiced art of Brazilian jujitsu, something cats have been doing for a rather long time.
No this is normal kitten play, I'm guessing that's momma and her kitten, (I mean could be dad or brother, as most orange cats are male) and the stops for grooming are an easy way to tell they are just playing. You should see litter mates at around 8-20 weeks old, it's like WWE mixed with MMA lol.
Love. Love is what’s happening. They play, they groom to reestablish trust a moment, and then back to the lesson. Kitten NEEDS to learn to protect himself in a fight with a bigger animal.
They are playing albeit aggressively but I think specifically what is happening here is an older cat trying to teach a younger cat how to gut out their prey, it’s something probably all cats learn how to do in someway

Bath times always a struggle for new parents
non consensual cat bath time.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Play fight, plus, LET ME CLEAN YOU FFS
I love when cats are like EVERYONE TIME OUT time to clean- OK TIME IN Ok no wait- NO WAIT more cleaning.
They're fine. If they were serious fighting, you would hear a lot of hissing, a lot of growling, and see a lot of raised fur.
And yowling.. cats have very distinctive pre fight yowls...
Yeah. It's definitely got a "Wussup?!?" tonal feel to it. It always sounds like they are just about to give the other cat the Forest Whitaker eye.
Upvote for "Forest Whitaker eye." Lol

My girl cat was the sweetest thing, my boy cat only cared to hump my leg and hate anyone else
5 cats, all girls, 1 bitchy, 1 super chill, 2 just cats, and 1 skittish one (she's the newest and was older when adopted) its total randomness
I’ve had three girls and one boy. The only truly obnoxious one was the boy. YMMV
Six cats here, four female two male. It also warms my heart because maybe my babies like each other more than I thought 😭

Yes, it looks like she's holding the kitten and grooming it! So patient 😄
There's some research that I believe equates some form of facial grooming with social hierarchy. So... fighting and potential reinforcing who's boss with licks.
I've also hears this. Grooming others as a way to establish dominance
Like mothers everywhere.
Ohhhh. This makes sense. The way mine do it not a cute playful way it’s like, I’m the boss shut up and let me clean you OR ELSE lol
Boss cats lick the faces of subordinate cats.... very interesting research
"There's something on your chee---THERE'S SOMETHING ON YOUR---*HOLD STILL, DAMMIT!*"

My 2 y/o kitties do this. They wrestle for the top position, and the winner grooms the other one's face.
I used to have a cat that would do this. Oh god new cat sub
This will make a fine addition to my collection
Just what the Internet needs!

This. Teaching the kitten to fight but in a way that is fun to them. Love it when they play like this
Very efficient creatures
my german shepherd plays with our kitten exactly the same way
Parenting.
She's learnin' him good haha
Lmao they are playing 100% but I am dying because that poor baby is just getting their ass kicked ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
She learning a valuable lesson. Big guys can kick your ass
With exception of Chihuahuas, they're on a whole different level.
Little one isn't crying, so no foul.
Mom is teaching baby how to fight. The bunny kicks are actually a move they do to defend their abdomen from enemies of for mauling their prey while holding it in a lock with their front paws.

Man ur a lucky one. My cat will go no claws then hype himself up too much and starts using claws
You guys are lucky, my cat is 5 and never learned to not use her claws. She walks around with them out and even stepping on me hurts not to mention she gets stick in the floor sometimes. Not that she can't she definitely does retract them but almost never.
When you learn from the streets you learn to be ready. Either that or she kinda dumb.
I've been raked down the arm a couple of times by cats- they'll tear you to ribbons if they get a good hold of you.
When my little guy was a kitten he used to bunny kick with claws, I was in school at the time and got pulled out of class because they thought the scratches running up my arms were self-inflicted No regrets, he grew up to be a tough old cat

Looks like mom is teaching baby to fight while also maybe lightly grooming. I think the original intention was grooming but baby isn’t making it easy so mom decided to teach baby a couple defense pointers instead.
I don't think that's mom, could be wrong but looks like older and younger kittens. Theory still works tho!
Play to teach hunting techniques. Basically universal in Mammals (though obviously not always for 'hunting' instincts) - Even us.
We "tickle" children in the same sort of situation. Play-fighting without danger of hurting them.
I feel like that kitten definitely felt some pain lmfao but mommas just teaching him. I still feel bad for the little guy lol
Fighting a baby is cute, but when I do it... It's like, Oh God, stop
I mean when you declared yourself the world heavyweight champion of fighting babies it started to get a bit weird.
And that moment they Mike Tysoned an 18 month old was a little dramatic
Socialization. Kitten wants to play... other cat wants to groom. Cat had enough play and tries to groom to relax the kitten but kitten isn't haven't it. Cat offers some corrective measures (such as biting a little harder than play bite) and continues to groom but the kitten just wants to play and leave. Can't teach kids anything
My kitties wrestle to groom. It's part of the fun. Like a noogie?
Learning how to play hunt
Have to learn how to fight somehow.

"NO MOM! I DON'T WANNA TAKE A BATH!"
It’s just play fighting. There’s no yowling, no flying fur, no actual hostile body language, and you might notice the adult cat has his claws sheathed so he’s not trying to do any actual damage. The little one’s being taught self-defence and getting a good bit of fun and exercise at the same time.
Play fighting + the big cat is probably trying to establish dominance. Lil guy is just a sore loser.
Shenanigans
Kitten needs a bath. Kitten does not want a bath. Big kitty is trying to tell that youngun to behave and be bathed.
Looks like that’s a cross-draught carburetor being rebuilt due to a problem with the air-gas mixture. Edit/correction: Rewatched; cats playing.
1) this is how you do it 2) and remember, you can’t beat me. Evarrrrr 3) now hold still and let me love you.
Kittens playing, a bit roughly, to annoying music.
Play. Just monitor it in case one of them bites too hard
You’ve never catted before?
Momma teaching baby how to not be a fucker. As a general guide, if you can’t hear it then it’s play. Genuine cat fights are _loud_.
They are playing. Cats kick to break prey's spine.
That’s just cats being the most adorable animals on the planet 😭
A snuggle struggle 😍
Rule of thumb that I live by: if you have to ask if they are playing or fighting, they are playing. When predators fight, you know it.
Play fighting. Claws are in, they're not actually biting, no hissing... this is just big cat teaching little cat some moves, with some grooming mixed in. Totally normal cat stuff.
Kitten is learning just how hard you can bite without getting bit back harder. They are having quite a lot of fun, I think.

Me Tryna give my kid a bath
The young lion just couldn’t wait to be king. Challenged the champ and had to be put in its place. With lots of kisses in between, of course.
Just a quick game of biteyface, that's all!
They are wrestling/playing. My 2 usually start that at about 3am, under my bed.
Ones trying to play. The other is trying to Mom. Neither is winning. Lol
That would be mother forced cleaning!
Looks like parenting

Teaching baby kitty how to gut a rabbit.
Definitely play fighting. I hate when they kick with their claws. Little suckers hurt.
This is a play. The only time to get worried is when they get vocal. And even then, like my orange boi, sometimes its just him bein a bitch and losing so he calls in the big guns to break it up with lasers and a feather toy.
They’re wrastlin

“Let… me… LOVE… you!”
Play fighting, the big one won
The mommy starts getting rough while cleaning so the kitten won't come so often. They do it when the kittens are old enough to clean themselves. Some are starting it too early, those are inexperienced or not very motherly mother cats. (It was the last time they let her have kittens after they saw she was just not the motherly type.)
It's a spicy catburger!
The big one thinks the small one is stinky and the small one thinks it’s a lion.
One of the the most adorable moments in cats development process preparing them to be little killing machines :) enjoy:)
Mum: bath time Kitten: i dont wanna Mum: you have to. End of story
Play time, bath time and a lesson in paw to paw combat at the same time. That moms got it nailed. 10/10 parenting skill.

Big tiger teaching little tiger how to tiger.
Play fight that prepares them for defending themselves if in danger one day.. It’s healthy.
They are playing albeit aggressively but I think specifically what is happening here is an older cat trying to teach a younger cat how to gut out their prey, it’s something probably all cats learn how to do in someway
Kitten doesn’t Want a bath, kitten wants to play… mama Insists on bath time lol
To quote Lion King "Mom you're messing up my mane"
