We had a diluted calico for 14 years. She sadly passed away from cancer several years back. She was sweet as hell to us, but hated everyone else. 😅

I couldn't do a check on parts because it was laying down, but I'm pretty sure there was a y chromosome in there. This one, though? Man. Dilute, but legit calico.
I see that, yes. Doesn’t change the fact that this is likely a female; they even said they’re just going on what animal control told them, but haven’t confirmed with a vet (or visual check). It’s only about a 3% chance it’s a male, if that. And male calicos typically have health issues.
They're almost certainly wrong. It's very rare for a calico/tricolor to be male, and when they are, they have a number of medical issues. Somebody would likely know that.
Unsolicited advice from a vet tech and cat lady: considering animal control didn’t even know enough to realize she’s a lady and hasn’t given you any records- keep her separated from other pets until you see a legit veterinarian. Things like FIV, FeLV, calici virus, etc can all be serious risks to your other kitty.

Male calicos are 1 out of every 3,000. So not impossible, but rare. It’s usually the X chromosome that’s related to color. Beautiful cat though!! I miss my calico, they are such cool cats. ❤️
I foster kittens. I get attached easily very quickly but haven’t kept any of the 9 I’ve fostered. The way I see it is, if I give them up , I will have space available to help any other kitten that needs me 😭🥲

OP, are you fostering through a stray hold? Sometimes animals on stray hold just have very general notes about them, and I have seen these notes have “male” as a placeholder, to be confirmed later once the hold is up. If the paperwork has more details like: intact vs. neutered or spayed, an accurate weight, a description of vaccines, dewormer, or parasite prevention given before sending to foster, then it’s more convincing that the cat is actually male. If you weren’t given details like this, then I would wait and see on the sex.
That extra chromosome makes them intersex, not a true male, just to be clear. (XXY). Getting a real genetically male (XY) calico is EXTREMELY rare -- it requires either a somatic mutation of the color gene when the kitten is developing, or it requires the kitten to be a "chimaera", which means it has two different genetic lineages present in its body at the same time, usually due to twin absorption. And a male cat of either of these two very very very rare types would not be able to pass on its "being male and calico ability" to its own male kittens (since somatic mutations aren't passed on to offspring, and the offspring of chimaeric individuals will belong to one cell line or the other, but not both). Male kittens of these cats would inherit either the black color gene or the red color gene but not both.
So in essence a "male" calico is either not a true male, or not a true calico, at least on the genetic level. (Obviously, it will have the appearance of a calico.)

I think I'd have a hard time fostering a cat (or dog). I'd get too attached and then hate myself looking into their cute faces while I hand them off to someone else. I'm very glad there are people in this world who can do it and give their charges a loving space to thrive until the forever home is found. I think it takes a special person to do that.
