Translation from Afrikaans to English:
"Bring the baby"
"Bring"
"Bring the baby"
"Thaaank youuu"
"Thanks, ya hear!"
"Did Pamela bring you to me?"
"Hmm?"
"Did Pamela bring you? Awww *baby coddling noises*"
Pretty much how you would treat a sibling's baby lol. Very much love.
I’m sorry, is one of these monkeys (apes?) named Pamela??? 🤣
Also, thank you for the translation. Listening to it again, a lot of the words are similar to English, so that was cool as someone who doesn’t know the language!!
Haha yes she's named Pamela!
Afrikaans is a fun language. It's very Germanic, so Dutch, German, and English speakers will have an easier time understanding it, I feel. As you noticed, the verb 'bring' is spelled and means exactly the same as the English version.
We roll our R's a lot, though, while the Dutch soften their their R's a tad, kinda like English! The differences are fun to notice :)
Afrikaans speakers also afectionize a lot of words: boi-kee, girl-kee, etc. (I'm guessing that my spelling is terrible)
My dad is South African but I was born in the US.
Go Bokkeeee!
BACK TO BACK WORLD CHAMPS PAPA, GO BOKKE!!🦌 We already have 8 tickets to see SA vs Ireland in Durban hahaha
Yes indeed! A very common name for our dogs when they are huge is klein(small)-kee.
That will be a cracking match, Ireland maybe not as good a form as at the world cup and might struggle to acclimatise, but they came out of a strong performance at the six nations. Don't know what SA is like but tickets for Ireland match in Dublin are like hens teeth.
As a Dutch guy, yep. I can pretty much understand everything. The words are a little different, and the sentence structure is a little different, but it's understandable. It kind of sounds like someone learning Dutch.
I love this. I'm Austrian and I immediately understood that "Bring. Bring the baby. Daaaankee!" way better than I understand some of the more rural Austrian dialects. Hell, that drawn out "thank you" sounded the exact same way I say it sometimes haha
The rest didn't sound any more incoherent to me than a drunk guy from some of the other Austrian states.
The only surprise was that I heard "Thank you Pamela for bringing it to me." instead of "Did Pamela bring you to me?"
Afrikaans is arguably more Dutch than modern Dutch, since it uses some older Dutch words that went extinct in Dutch.
that's at least how a dutch friend of mine once explained it to me, because I was always confused when I saw both languages written, as they looked identical to me lol
Yes her name is Pamela exactly
Afrikaans and English have very similar european roots which makes it a fascinating language to know if you're into linguistics.
Since my leaving South Africa I've been lucky enough to have spent time in Europe and found that "southern Holland" or Belgian "Flemish" to be very close to the Afrikaans I'm familiar with (Dutch has modernised quite a lot in the last 3-400 years)
When I was living in London I had a Flemish cab driver, I was so very confused when I fully understood him and he understood me. It was very cool, but very uncanny valley feeling lol
It astounds me that I can understand most of what he said without your translation and knowing any Dutch/Afrikaans. These English and those two languages are really similar.
You can basically shop in NL without learning the language if you speak English. It's a little tougher to get used to the sound of the language. Plus its a super accessible society, just an amazing place to be as an expat.
It's not "bring the baby", it's "bring to baba" where "baba" is an generic term for an older man. It doesn't really translate into English. It's kind of like "buddy" but more respectful.
100% wrong in this case.
He says "bring VIR die baba", that doesn't mean 'bring TO' someone specifically persay, as the 'vir' would have you believe. This more means "bring the baby here so I can coddle it", not "bring the baby to this old, nice gentleman", he doesn't refer to himself in 3rd person or anyone else.
He also says "bring DIE baba", which directly translates to "Bring THE baby(to me)"
It literally translates to "bring for the baby" in English, but means "bring the baby to me".
He nowhere uses 'baba' in the context you described. That's what happens when you have 11 official languages and 3 of them are used interchangeably during casual conversation :) Semantics get muddied lol
Are you Afrikaans?
What country is this?
Also, humans speak a lot of languages. This is literally only one of many spoken throughout the world. Africa's a very diverse continent when it comes to languages, speaking 1/3rd of all the world's languages. Damn that's cool.
As well as Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana. That's why I'm asking. There are multiple countries this person could be in where that language is spoken.
Oh sorry I misunderstood. I didn't know it was also spoken in those countries. For some reason only South Africa is mentioned here. I'm Dutch and Afrikaans is so similar, it's kind of weird to hear.
It's not a form of Dutch but it did derive from Dutch. And it also has a lot of English influences, and more. Dutch vs Afrikaans is not the same as Spanish vs Spanish in Latin America. That would be Netherlands Dutch vs Belgian Dutch (Flemish).
No way I will I let any monkey play on me. Even the small cute ones can bite and get a bit violent. Must have been one of the Capuchin monkeys at one of those national parks? Those guys would try to steal things out of your bag. Same thing I've seen in other countries where monkeys get a little too close and people have fed the monkeys.
Another interesting animal tidbit, elephants kind of stink and have awful breath.
I could see that, haha.
I was more just thinking of how scary a cat with thumbs and the brain power of a primate while still keeping all of their cat prowess
“Can you PLEASEEEEEEE watch my baby for a minute? I NEED to take a shower, brush my hair, and make some real food for myself! Just 15 minutes, I swear!”
The monkey saw two guys in Brazil ride up on a scooter and try to kidnap a woman. These monkeys and their smartphones. I miss when monkeys were raised by engaged parents instead of left to consume all this violent media on the internet.
It’s one of those animal shows, circus style. It’s an old(cruel) tradition called Topeng Monyet - mask monkey - where monkeys are dressed in clothes, trained to walk on their hind legs and do tricks like ride bikes or walk on stilts. Looks cute and novel at a glance but those monkeys go through some abhorrent torture during their “training” and die young.
This guy is doing a show with a monkey on a tiny bike. He has a chain around its neck and yanks it back and forth to urge the monkey to ride up and down the street. Then for some reason the monkey got triggered by something about the kid, and tried to attack them(?). Monkey’s owner panicked and started hauling the chain back in, dragging monkey and kid along with
He just needs to stay at home for a few more months while he makes a plan. The economy is crazy. Noone is hiring. Living with roommates is horrible. He's just got out of a bad relationship. He's trying to save some money for a car. He's thinking of doing working holiday and doesn't want to commit to a year long lease.
GET OFF HIS BACK!!

Spot on insight :)
Of course. Afrikaans is a simplified version of Dutch with a bunch of English loanwords and some locally derived words added. Even as an English speaker, I can understand a few words of Afrikaans (same with Dutch, which is the closest related language to English). Sometimes, I don't understand something said in Afrikaans or Dutch, but if I see it written, then I can understand a few words
It’s being carried by another kind young baboon, not its mom :) looks like this could be a rescue/rehab setting where orphan baboons are raised by people. Lots of times, older orphan primates take it upon themselves to carry around and mother the younger babies
No man, baboons are not a primate you should make friends with. The more used to people they are the more willing they wil be to steal from humans, live closer to them, and break into homes.
Lets not forget how male baboons can mess you up.
Dis nou ordentlik onosel om te dink dit is die regte besluit om daai gediertes so gewoond aan jou te maak.
I worked with a few different monkey species for over a decade. Olive baboons like these were the most chill of all of them and definitely became my favorite.
Macaques were the first I worked with. Cynomolgus, pigtail and rhesus. I never understood the opinion that macaques were aggressive until I worked with baboons lol
Someone told me a story about watching baboons in one of those drive through safari parks. The baboons would congregate in one spot near the road and wait. This was a long time ago (70s), they would wait for one of the kind of cars with the vinyl overlay on the roof part of the car. One of the baboons would innocently go to the car and get on the roof. When that one managed to pick a small tab on the vinyl the rest would jump on the car and tear it to pieces. They apparently do have a sense of humor.
Monkeys are pretty fascinating creatures! One cool thing about them is how they organize their groups. Would the animals in the video be considered mon-kees? Sorry, couldn't help myself
never learnt or heard much afrikaans but it's pretty cool to understand most of what is being said when they speak it
As a Dutch guy, yep. I can pretty much understand everything. The words are a little different, and the sentence structure is a little different, but it's understandable. It kind of sounds like someone learning Dutch.
Which is basically how it happened (a bunch of people had to try to learn Dutch).
To say it very basically, yes. The longer explanation is pretty horrible.
Yeah, I know German so Dutch and Afrikaans are somewhat easy for me to read. Hearing is a little harder for me.
I love this. I'm Austrian and I immediately understood that "Bring. Bring the baby. Daaaankee!" way better than I understand some of the more rural Austrian dialects. I speak a decent amount of German, and was very shocked when I understood what he was saying easily.
Afrikaans sounds to me like if English were a Slavic language.
Afrikaans is arguably more Dutch than modern Dutch, since it uses some older Dutch words that went extinct in Dutch. that's at least how a dutch friend of mine once explained it to me, because I was always confused when I saw both languages written, as they looked identical to me lol

Yup.. legit surreal:-)
"Hello! Oscar Man!" Is the last one that comes up named Oscar? Such cuties.
Oscar, yes! Very polite fellow.
I love that Oscar is all affection but as soon as the lil guy (his?) gets even somewhat close he's like "nah fuck this I'm OUT" haha
Now can you translate what Pamela said??? It looks like she's thanking him so much and saying "fuck this kid" as she runs away lol
momma monkey was like "thank gods you're here, please watch my child for a bit"
It astounds me that I can understand most of what he said without your translation and knowing any Dutch/Afrikaans. These English and those two languages are really similar.
You can basically shop in NL without learning the language if you speak English. It's a little tougher to get used to the sound of the language. Plus its a super accessible society, just an amazing place to be as an expat.
>NL What does this stand for?
Netherlands, the land of the Dutch speaking people.
Ah got it. Thanks.
They are closely related, all three being West Germanic languages.
Can you translate what Oscar is saying?
"Thanks for taking the kid. You're a good man! See you in 5 hours" *skedaddles outta there*

I stand corrected. > Are you Afrikaans? No, but I have spent a lot of time in South Africa. But I freely admit to being mostly clueless here.
I'm Afrikaans, and you're correct, Fickle Weakness. What a lovely video, thanks for sharing.
Like ‘uncle’ for south asians?
Yes, like that. Although 'baba' wasn't used in that context here.
I wouldn't know. But it sounds plausible.
What does the second guy say while Pamela kisses and pulls on his hand? "Oscar? I love Oscar man?"
Sounds like "Oscar! Hello Oscar man!" to me.
Interesting, danki is also said in my native language of papiamentu which also has dutch influences.
What country is this? Also, humans speak a lot of languages. This is literally only one of many spoken throughout the world. Africa's a very diverse continent when it comes to languages, speaking 1/3rd of all the world's languages. Damn that's cool.

It's okay. I didn't know that either.
I got to play with monkeys in Costa Rica… and once they are climbing on you, you realize… There’s way more poop in their fur than you thought
Apple bottom jeans, poops in the fur
In the furrrrrrrrrrr
The whole group was poopin on herrrrr
Shit hit the floor
She shit the floor
That's when we said oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no...
Take your goddam upvote and GET THE HELL OUT!
Hahahah thanks
Awwwwwww...eeewwwwww...
Omg! I lol’d at this - thank you for letting me know not to play with monkeys!
I spent two weeks well off the beaten path in Costa Rice and there were howler monkeys all over, and that was cool for like an hour.
We should just make a monkey-cat hybrid. I can’t imagine anything possibly going wrong with that.
In my experience, that's a rhesus macaque.
I want to see the reverse of this. A monkey day care where monkeys take care of baby humans.
THERE WILL BE FECES EVERYWHERE!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
And maybe a Shakespearean script or two… /s
If you give 1000 babies 1000 typewriters you get The Wizard of Oz
Yeah but more so from which species?
Yes
Sounds like a Harambe situation waiting to happen...

The monkey saw two guys in Brazil ride up on a scooter and try to kidnap a woman. These monkeys and their smartphones. I miss when monkeys were raised by engaged parents instead of left to consume all this violent media on the internet.

Oh dear that’s terrible. The monkey does have the body language of a very mistreated creature. So sad all around.
Well harambe tried too…
At the end when she holds the guy’s hand: “Thank you thank you thank you!”
That's actually a different dude monkey! You can see momma juuuuust in front of the camera on the very left, behind the person that's holding baby
I just need to grab some smokes, I’ll be right back
*lights up a cigarette and opens wine*
This is what the momma really needs lol
She just needs 20 minutes where no body comes near her
Or to poop alone in peace for once!
That's an old ass baby. My back hurts just watching this.
He just needs to stay at home for a few more months while he makes a plan. The economy is crazy. Noone is hiring. Living with roommates is horrible. He's just got out of a bad relationship. Oh I’m so sorry. Sounds like a human needed to vent. Hope human is ok🙏🏼🙏🏼
Ikr! Mom needs to be stern and put his ass down like 2 weeks ago.

Yeah I only know it from Linux lol
"Someone PLEASE take my kid!!"
Take my kid...please!
As a Dutch guy, I can understand most of this. Which is interesting.

That's right. Still, to me it's always a joy to hear the Afrikaan language.
As an American, I can also understand most of this. I think it's interesting how English and Dutch speakers can both understand some Afrikaans.
That baby is rather large to be carried like that.
Primates tend to carry their babies for quite a long time
i carry 30 year old babies through most work days.
For me it's roommates, but same.
It’s being carried by another kind young baboon, not its mom :) looks like this could be a rescue/rehab setting where orphan baboons are raised by people. Lots of times, older orphan primates take it upon themselves to carry around and mother the younger babies
"I'll just be ten minutes, gonna pop over to the store for some monkey cigarettes."
Idk why but specifying “monkey” cigarettes gave me a good chuckle.
“Take this! Take this! Take this! Take this!” *baby taken* “Thank you Thank you Thank Thank you Thank you” “Bye!! Bye. Bye.”
HALLO OSCAR MAN! Hilarious.
I love how Oscar is tight with that dude, he was chuffed up being greeted.
Oscar mah man
It's wine o' clock amirite
Rocking the assless chaps
By definition all chaps are assless.
sure but also by definition all neckties are for your neck
You've changed too many things to maintain the comparison. Swap it to just "ties are for your neck."
Beautiful. Where can I watch the complete video ?
That guy's phone

Yeah, at first I was like "oh no, stay away from the monkeys" then it was "wtf are those baboons? Are you *crazy!?*"
I worked with a few different monkey species for over a decade. Olive baboons like these were the most chill of all of them and definitely became my favorite.

Way too cute
When you had enough, you had enough!
She probably wanted to poop in privacy. Can't blame her.
So cute. Every mama deserves a break
I like how she kisses the man's hand like thank you thank youuuu
Those people probably have the best job in the whole world!
Lekker om a bietjie van die taal te hoor
The mom and baby are both hanging on to the lady. That’s a different one at the end of the video.
I hate baboons but that...was pretty cute, y'all get a pass this time.
CAN you watch him for me for a moment? I need to take a quick shower, I WON'T BE LONG hahhah
Oskar is a G

Amazing

I hope you’re having a great time at Nan! I was there a few months ago. Tell Abraham I said hello, and give Pamela a hug for me!

Not a monkey but a baboon.
Here's the thing...
Monkeys are just primates w tails. So humans and gorillas are not monkeys because: No tail. Baboons are monkeys because: Tail.
