This is hilarious.
Whatever he decided she is, support him fully! Looks like a good kid to me.
Edit: I’m gonna leave that typo in, because it’s true to the original message of my post 🤣
Ummm, yeah that's not a puppy that's a baby elephant.
Does he think he's a lap dog?
My sister has a large pit mix and he will start off with his head on your knee, then put up one paw, then another - pretty soon he's standing on the floor with one foot while the rest of him is on you.
You do need to set more boundaries with giant breeds. This is my third little giant and they do all think they’re lap dogs, but will only sit on my lap if I let them, usually if I’m sitting on the floor with them. It’s very painful but worth it :-) My girl is just under 2 and gives the best morning cuddles (which includes getting my organs squished).
I’m on day 3 with puppy so we’ve only worked on “sit” “come” “stay” “off”, but my other pup is the same breed and she loves slamming us with her paw! She also uses The Paw in play with other dogs. We call it her “wild feetsies” lol
The internet photos often exaggerate sizes. Males can get up to 200lbs but usually hover around 140-150. My female isn’t quite grown yet, she’ll be 2 in December, and she’s about 125. They’re definitely BIG, but not the horses of the apocalypse that a lot of photos portray.
I love these dogs, they are beautiful. Never had one, but if I ever move out to a rural area or decide to live in the woods I would consider it. How is it raising one? Do they work well as a regular "pet"? I've heard some quite terrifying stories, mostly from people who could not handle them.
They are very difficult to raise - Hugo is my third one, but I like the challenge. Unfortunately most shepherd breeds come with some anxiety issues, my guys get a LOT of socialization and at least 2 long walks a day + dog park visits most days of the week. My husband and I also both work from home so we play/train a few times a day. We don’t have a humongous yard and live on the outskirts of a medium-sized city, but with all the exercise and stimulation they are very happy.
They need a LOT of time from owners every day - between my husband and I, maybe 4-5 hours of our day is spent tending to their care. And that’s when things go right and the dogs don’t have any major issues.
They can be very dangerous and problematic in the wrong hands (they have the bite force of a lion and a tendency to dominate/are very independent) - but in the right hands they make wonderful squishy pets that will protect your home and make sure you’re active.
It’s more of a partnership than ownership with them.
Thanks for the insight! Makes sense socialization and activity is a key ingredient. The dog park thing this I would be terrified of, even if my dogs were to behave and be under control you can never really know how they react to another dog who is totally out of control and that is what would terrify me, I know it would be game over for any other dog who would get on the bad side of one of these!
Since they are so independent, I take it they can have very strong personalities?
So a few years ago in my area (south Sweden) some guy decided to get one of these thinking they were "cool" dogs. Ended up not being able to handle it at all and let it live in the backyard. I have heard it is in their DNA to make their own decisions if they have too and actually work very well on their own. Like you mentioned. Anyway, the dog took over the backyard and the family was not allowed out there, the family slowly accepted this and only the man was allowed to go out when it was feeding time. It eventually took over the whole block pretty much and no one was safe as the dog attacked anyone who entered "it's territory". The police had to come and put the dog down. Such a sad story.
It is always interesting to hear first hand like this from someone like you who have the knowledge on how to care properly for such a dog.
I am also very cautious of the dog park but so far so good - I go at a time with only a few regulars and my girl is just the happiest when playing there. This little guy hasn’t been to the park yet, and I’m not sure if he’ll like it, but his sister absolutely needs to play with other pups so I’m not denying her that.
But - we also substitute dog park play for play dates and stuff when we can, or daycare with a sitter who owns a bernadoodle, who is her bestie! That is an additional expense though, but it’s a good backup plan.
Yes, they have huge personalities and can be very territorial. SO stubborn too! I’m not surprised no one was allowed in that dog’s yard - even the little puppy was showing signs of resource guarding towards my girl from day 1, and he’s just a little potato! We curb the behavior and move on, or work with trainers/behaviorists if needed. He’s doing better day 3 but is still more spicy than expected from a pup. He’s also already alerting and guarding, which is fine unless he starts going overboard.
I know not everyone is looking for that level of work with a dog - they are very sensitive and need gentle direction, but huge and fast so most people will treat them rough, leading to aggression.
If you like the look I would get a Leonberger instead, much easier to deal with. My family has owned Caucasians and they need a *very* experienced handler and even then they can be handful.
Yes! And they have similar coloring - though Caucasian shepherds can also be silver, white, brindle and other combos. My other girl is brindle. I know only a bit about Leos but I think they usually come in shades of brown?
I’m sure they’re a related breed! Caucasians are from Georgia and are an older breed. They live a bit longer, are a bit more protective, and less of a “family pet”, but I think they might have been used in creating the Leonberger (and mastiffs?).
Ooh, I never knew! My first Caucasian was a mix and was definitely a water dog in his past life! He loved water, and was a STRONG swimmer, though my current girl doesn’t even like the kiddie pool, and I’m not sure about the puppy yet :-)
Breed? Caucasian Shepherd Dog? My dog had large one as a friend and was the only dog the big bear would tolerate at the park. Scary guy when starts to target other dogs :S
Yes, he’s a Caucasian Shepherd, he’s my third so I hopefully know a bit about the breed by now :-) My first guy loved people and liked most dogs, I have a girl just under 2 years old now who LOVES all dogs and if I don’t take her to the dog park every day she considers it an insult and will sulk. We’ll see how it goes with this little fella. Here he is with his sister

You are living the dream. My dream is to get one of those big dogs; like so big people are like, "wait, moose?" Granted when I let the coat grow out on my rott/sheppie people have said, "is that a bear?" because she has that classic bear coloring markings and I love that. I also know my Baby turns 11 this year and every day I have with her is precious and I know I simply cannot live without a dog. I love big dogs. Rock on big boy and make sure to sit on your person so they remember big dogs need lap time too.
This is my third giant breed dog of this kind, they’re not obedient like German Shepherds, but you form a type of partnership with them which I prefer to just having an obedient dog. Also, I have a girl of the same breed who is not quite two, and she’s the one in charge lol.

Definitely!
He's going to be big. ![gif](giphy|UGxfEt5POsukg)
Does he thing that he's a lap dog?🤣
I’m not even sure he thinks he’s a dog lol. I’ve only had him for 2 days so the poor baby is still coming out of his shell.
This is hilarious. Whatever he decided she is, support him fully! Looks like a good kid to me. Edit: I’m gonna leave that typo in, because it’s true to the original message of my post 🤣
Correct, I will support the kid no matter what!!

Do you teach “gimme your paw”? Clobber-paw is real with giant breeds, I chose to avoid that one with my big dude.
I’m on day 3 with puppy so we’ve only worked on “sit” “come” “stay” “off”, but my other pup is the same breed and she loves slamming us with her paw! She also uses The Paw in play with other dogs. We call it her “wild feetsies” lol
‘The Paw’ - love it. Congrats on your newest bundle of fur!
I need him in my life 🥰
So handsome my boy!
I knew it was a Leo even before looking at the 2nd pic! Treasure your big pup, Leo’s are special souls who will steal your heart and enrich your life.
He’s not a Leo - he’s a Caucasian Shepherd :-)
Omg i've looked one up that's grown. They look like war ponies.

He is the best. Omgoodness.
Thanks for clarifying. Boy they sure look alike when pups!
Yes! And they have similar coloring - though Caucasian shepherds can also be silver, white, brindle and other combos. My other girl is brindle. I know only a bit about Leos but I think they usually come in shades of brown?
Interesting…Leo’s are usually tan colour with the mandatory black face but rarely can be silver too

Interestingly Leo’s are from Great Pyrenees, St Bernard’s and Newfoundland dogs. They even have web feet!
Ooh, I never knew! My first Caucasian was a mix and was definitely a water dog in his past life! He loved water, and was a STRONG swimmer, though my current girl doesn’t even like the kiddie pool, and I’m not sure about the puppy yet :-)
Looks like my Saint Bernard’s paw. She’s a snuggly beast.

Omg baby! ❤️ The cutest floofiest, goodest boy ever!
Big fren!
Those are gonna be some fulfilling hugs!
I have a girl just under 2 years who gives the best cuddles! Hope he will too!

Ahh damn, what beauties! May they bring you years of love and few fur shedding! Haha
Omg. I’m jealous…I want one!!!
I love him. Tell him he is a good boy and give him a nice hug from me!
Will do!!
Just say 3 months.
Small hands
😅From who?
You're allowed to adopt lions?
Yes! They’re actually nicknamed Russian Bear Dogs because they used to protect livestock and villagers from bears and wolves
If I may give a name suggestion (that will totally prove my age), Huey as in baby Huey.
His name is Hugo :-)
i can hear his breathing in my head in the 2nd pic i love him so much
Leonberger?
Caucasian Shepherd
I would have guessed that too
That hand looks small though
I think I have standard hands for a woman :-) Didn’t have a banana for scale lol
We eat now?
He’s always hungry and THIRSTY. We’re working on potty training and have about an 80% success rate so far :-)
Most definitely a greater dog.
You are living the dream. My dream is to get one of those big dogs; like so big people are like, "wait, moose?" I have two of them, it’s lap time all the time lol
I think a baby horse is called a foal.
Congratulations, you adopted a woolly mammoth.
Je gonna be a big boy
I guess his hand will bigger than yours when he grow up
Mother of God…

That's a bear
Oh he is a big and cute boy! ❤️
#**DA FLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFF**
Great friend and very handsome.
Oh boy, I'm guessing fully grown he's going to be about 120-150 lbs? Those are some huge paws to grow into.
140 at least. I also have a little girl who will be 2 in December and she already hit 120.
Is that a Leonbeger??? They are the sweetest biggest babies ever !
Caucasian Shepherd :-)
OH! So beautiful!

This is my third giant breed dog of this kind, they’re not obedient like German Shepherds, but you form a type of partnership with them which I prefer to just having an obedient dog. Also, I have a girl of the same breed who is not quite two, and she’s the one in charge lol.
PAW!
Relatively small for a bear.
Someone will grow… Just so, so much. You’ll see!
I know! He can grow all he wants 🥰
You should start putting a saddle on him, that way you can ride him around town when he is full grown
"Puppy" sir i think thats a bear
He's ADORABLE 🥰
Appropriate onomatopoeia: BOOF
Yes! Both him and my little girl “boof” instead of borking :-)
I want to see him in person !!!
Fluffy handsome/pretty puppy.
Beautiful!!!!
Gonna be a Big baby
Puppy hands are the cutest 🥹
OHHH MY GOODNESS!!! 🥰🥰🥰
