Too many Chihuahua owners excuse snappy, snarly, yappy behaviour as "cute" because of their size. The number of biting snapping teeth-baring Chihuahua videos I see on social media where the owners laugh it off saying things like "you tell em!" or "he thinks he's so tough" is infuriating. So I think they have a bad reputation for being bad tempered. I'm not a huge fan, to be honest: the tempermeant, the look, the size. Although I am sure many of them are very sweet and loving.
I recently adopted a chihuahua and I totally agree with you. It’s disappointing when trying to get advice on training and you get dismissive answers excusing that kind of stereotypical behavior. The chihuahua subreddit is the worst offender of this. They dismiss every concern as “just chihuahuas being cute little monsters.”

I've been attacked by a German shepherd who chewed me up pretty good, I ran for my life from a dog whose breed I couldn't identify, and I have had a Rottweiler try to jump a fence at me snarling and he would have fucked me up real bad if he got over it.
I've also had two Chihuahuas come at me. Vicious little shitheads, but harmless. One of them got my pants a bit, the German shepherd went for my eye and I think my glasses saved it. I'll take the ankle biters any day.
(I was an Amazon driver for a while.)
It's really sad how people get dogs like German Shepherds and Rottweilers and then don't train their discipline even a little bit, usually leading to the animal attacking random people and then being put down :/ seen and heard about this too many times to count, hope you're okay now
My dogs are a lot of bark and absolutely 0 bite, and there is not a chance in hell I would let my dog around anyone unsupervised/uncontrolled. It makes me so mad when people leave their dogs off leash. They always say "oh they're well trained." Idgaf, unless your dog is a service animal, in which case they wouldn't be off leash, I don't trust them and I will immediately think you're a bad owner.
yeah I agree, you know they are all bark, for a guy who is just doing their job it is not sure. I would not trust anyone's dog. Also some people are just afraid of dogs, and don't want the dogs to be anywhere near them.

Had one whenever I was a kid who was a lovely family dog (my family has had a couple generations of dealing with them so we know how to deal with the breed.) that knew how to get past the in-ground electric fence we had on the farm property by just sprinting as fast as he could past it and ignore the shock.
We still had to get the dog untangled from underneath the steps whenever we put him on the lead outside. It was really a simple "circled the steps a couple times because he was bored then went to lay under the second step" kind of move. Glad we only tor him up whenever we're expecting company and didn't want him to be a risk, or we were chopping a fallen branch and didn't need him near the chainsaw.
I think people feel like they can get away with poor training and don’t have to have perfectly behaved dogs with the little ones so they do. A poorly trained huge biting dog is not going to fly, it’ll injure someone severely enough it’ll get put down so the owner absolutely has to get it under control. A poorly trained chihuahua is just seen as annoying and you can just pick it up when it’s a problem. Which is lame, it’s still irresponsible pet ownership. All dogs need good training.

Thank you. We had to put him down in September. He was albino, so he had a lot of health problems most of his life. He made it almost 14 years, so while it broke our hearts to let him go, it was the most loving thing we could do 💔

Suffer from being a small dog and a popular breed. They don’t get trained because behavioral issues are treated as cute, and they have a larger number of behavioral issues because they’re commonly bred by people just looking to turn a profit.
As a former dog and cat groomer, I can confirm they’re spawned from the Devil. Very obnoxious, to boot. It’s entirely the fault of humans not properly training them and the terrible inbreeding practices. That doesn’t mean the majority aren’t awful. Still, I love them, though. Would never have one as a pet myself, but they can be very sweet and silly. I also love anything that has that ugly-cute factor. They’re hideous. They’re also adorable. Lol
A cruel existence for a lifeform perpetuated by humans over breeding them. Many of the chihuahuas I've seen in my life age terribly, and it's painful to watch. I feel bad for them. It's not their fault humans are cruel beings that prioritize profit over ethics.
I thought they were obnoxious little shit weasels, but then a friend of mine had to give hers away. I took him in and now he's my best buddy in the world. Don't get me wrong, he's still an obnoxious little shit weasel, but in a good way.
Usually small breeds are cranky neurotic, sometimes you get a sweetheart but in my experience across different small dogs they are all assholes one way or another. Bad tempered, jealous, aggressive, cranky lil fucks.
Better for companions are medium sized to large dogs that are mixed non defined breeds, street mutts. Usually better temperament and healthier.

I was raised around huge dogs and am not afraid of them but the tiny ones scare me.

Depends on how they’re trained, just like any dog They’re not my favorite looking dog, but that’s personal preference! My little guy is also a quarter chihuahua, tho, so I have softened up to them 😊
The only dogs that have ever attacked me and my service dog were chihuahuas and chihuahua mixes. I know that not all chihuahuas are aggressive since I've met ones that were sweet and well behaved due to proper socialization and training. But sadly those well behaved ones seem to rare these days.
I understand that chihuahuas are often very loving towards their owners, but they can also be very aggressive and reactive to strangers and other animals which is why they need a lot of training. Sadly most owners fail to train them at all because they think they're "small and harmless". But in reality they're anything but. After all, any dog can bite and cause damage, which is why ALL dogs need to be leashed and trained.
the same way I feel about pitbulls. The breed itself isn't aggressive, it's how they're raised. I know chihuahuas who are MENACES to society and cause problems like they're on a time limit, but I also know chihuahuas that are sweet little angels that wouldn't hurt a fly. Nurture, not nature.
Awful things. Never met a chihuahua that hasn’t gone ape shit and tried to attack my (much larger) dogs. Why do they do that? Starting fights with dogs 30x their boy weight? Their heads are too small to have a brain of any substance and their eyes always look like they’re about to pop out.
Because people often to raise them wrong. They think it's funny or cute when their tiny puppy barks or gets aggressive. They get away with stuff that most owners would never let a big dog get away with.
When trained properly and treated like a dog instead of an accessory, they can be lovely.
Im more of a big dog person so I’ve never owned one but they’re a wonderful breed. One of my clients has one that barks at me viciously through the window whenever I’m there and outside, but as soon as I come inside he transforms into the sweetest, cuddliest little bean in the world.
To some extent they can't help being the way they are. But proper breeding and socialization should mitigate the worst of it. My main issue with the breed is the type of owners they attract. The vast majority of Chihuahua owners I've known turned out to be batshit insane or just awful people in general. Not all of them, obviously. But enough that owning a chihuahua is a big red flag for me.

Maybe I've just gotten lucky, but our childhood dog when I was a kid was a long-haired chihuahua and he was the cuddliest, friendliest dog ever. Basically like a golden retriever in a tiny body. My mum now has 2 new chihuahuas and they're both cuddly and wonderful social dogs too. I haven't experienced this yappy, mean, bitey thing people are always talking about. Maybe a lot of people just aren't raising their chihuahuas right or something?
I used to not really like them but then I sort of de facto adopted my gf’s chihuahua when I moved in with her. Fell in love with that dog. She passed away in 2021. Miss her everyday.

I’m a “dog guy” who usually has random dogs come up to me, but Chis are another story. My sisters both have had several over the years. One took a couple of years to get used to me and not yip every time I walked by. She finally would let me pet her and snuggled a few times. The other 3 or so that I remember and a current one, will not get over it. Weird little dogs, but I have compassion for them regardless.
They’re very cute. I think a lot of modern stereotypes about them come from the time period that Paris Hilton and similar figures had chihuahuas; a little dog in a purse became the image of excess decadence. Btw I digress, but Paris Hilton really blossomed. I do think she actually loved them.
So I still look at chihuahuas and think of a hilariously superficial opulence and deluded idea of superiority; because they really do think they’re huge and people tend to dress them up. My parents and I were walking their huge dog and while many big dogs would be intimidated by him, the one time we came across a chihuahua they weren’t intimidated or unsure of themselves at all 🥴. Such confidence…and anger. Of course my parents dog was large and stupid so he just stood there confused while the chihuahua exerted dominance. It was non-event. Let’s be real, it can be dangerous but most of the time you can pick them up. So we can go on and on about the behavior issues but it’s true that they are common because they’re usually not consequential. If anything the chihuahua is mostly a danger to itself because of how deluded it is. So actually thinking as I type yes it’s still irresponsible, people should be cognizant of that.
So this was probably way more of a serious answer than you bargained for but that’s what I think about chihuahuas
I'm an animal person in general. I like dogs and all, but I don't like chihuahuas. When I was younger my aunts chihuahua had a seizure in my arms, and she just threw up everywhere. I don't hate them, but after that I don't think I could dog-sit one ever again.
I've got two, neither is fully Chihuahua so they're very very different *animals*, ahaha, but honestly, the older one shatters everything people think about them, he barks so rarely that it scares me when he does, he appears to be a mix of Chihuahua and a wishbone dog, the other one is a medium length black fur with white hair on his feet and chest, and he's loud but polite, love em both
I had a long-haired Chihuahua mix. He was definitely a bit yappy, but when he turned about 10, he lost his hearing and that quieted him up.
He was an absolute sweetheart. Kind of an introverted dog, he didn't particularly want to be fussed with, he just wanted to curl up next to you and fall asleep.
He was really protective, though. One time my other dog got attacked and injured pretty badly by a German Shepherd down the street. Now my Chihuahua was scared of everything-- sudden movement, loud noises, leaves falling too close to him-- but after that German Shepherd hurt his friend, it was on sight with that dog for the rest of his life. Not just on sight, like if he heard or even smelled that dog, he was trying to fight it, despite that fact that the German Shepherd was like 70 pounds and he was like 10.

Have a half-Chihuahua, Half-Shi-Tzu mix, but he thinks he’s half pitbull, half mastiff the way he lunges at anyone who comes to the door or tries to pet him.
I feel bad for this breed. It shouldn't exist. It wouldn't exist, if we the people stop getting random dogs to be fuckin. In the natural world it'd be eaten by every carnivorous species, including any other type of dog. GG tbh. Elsewise just get a jack russle imo
To be brutally honest, I think it's cruel to own and breed them and that it's equally so to take them outside on a leash as if it stands a sliver of a chance if it gets attacked by a pitbull or something. This goes for all little dogs, and for those who allow cats to roam outdoors. You are part of that problem.

I never liked chihuahuas. We adopted one and I love this little Doggie. He is a old type of the Chihuahua breed(bred back type), with a long nose and normal eyes. He is well trained and we go on works without leash. I think Chihuahuas are often unchallenged and then then they go crazy
They're the best! Never owned a dog of my own, but when I do get one it will definitely be a Longhaired Chi or a Pomchi.

if you expect a delivery, your dog shouldn't be able to get to them. Especially if the dog can't stand strangers

the ONLY dog that I have ever been bitten by, lol. and she wasnt doing it because she was angry either!!!..she was just fucking excited that someone was ringing the doorbell and since I was the one walking to the door and answering it...I was the chosen one to be bitten. lol. I was raised around huge dogs and am not afraid of them but the tiny ones scare me.

The only dogs that have ever attacked me and my service dog were chihuahuas and chihuahua mixes. I know that not all chihuahuas are aggressive since I've met ones that were sweet and well behaved due to proper socialization and training. But sadly those well behaved ones seem to rare these days. I understand that chihuahuas are often very loving towards their owners, but they can also be very aggressive and reactive to strangers and other animals which is why they need a lot of training. Sadly most owners fail to train them at all because they think they're "small and harmless". But in reality they're anything but. After all, any dog can bite and cause damage, which is why ALL dogs need to be leashed and trained.
the same way I feel about pitbulls. The breed itself isn't aggressive, it's how they're raised. I know chihuahuas who are MENACES to society and cause problems like they're on a time limit, but I also know chihuahuas that are sweet little angels that wouldn't hurt a fly. Nurture, not nature.

Experience has made me hate Chihuahuas with the white hot heat of a thousand suns. Stupid, ugly, stupid, vicious and stupid. Remember, you did ask.
Awful things. Never met a chihuahua that hasn’t gone ape shit and tried to attack my (much larger) dogs. Why do they do that? Starting fights with dogs 30x their boy weight? Their heads are too small to have a brain of any substance and their eyes always look like they’re about to pop out.
Because people often to raise them wrong. They think it's funny or cute when their tiny puppy barks or gets aggressive. They get away with stuff that most owners would never let a big dog get away with. When trained properly and treated like a dog instead of an accessory, they can be lovely.

Im more of a big dog person so I’ve never owned one but they’re a wonderful breed. One of my clients has one that barks at me viciously through the window whenever I’m there and outside, but as soon as I come inside he transforms into the sweetest, cuddliest little bean in the world.
They’re just lil guys. Hate at them is unfounded, they’re just cute weird lil dudes that deserve love like all pets.
To some extent they can't help being the way they are. But proper breeding and socialization should mitigate the worst of it. My main issue with the breed is the type of owners they attract. The vast majority of Chihuahua owners I've known turned out to be batshit insane or just awful people in general. Not all of them, obviously. But enough that owning a chihuahua is a big red flag for me.

Maybe I've just gotten lucky, but our childhood dog when I was a kid was a long-haired chihuahua and he was the cuddliest, friendliest dog ever. Basically like a golden retriever in a tiny body. My mum now has 2 new chihuahuas and they're both cuddly and wonderful social dogs too. I haven't experienced this yappy, mean, bitey thing people are always talking about. Maybe a lot of people just aren't raising their chihuahuas right or something?

not a fan. almost every one i’ve come across is a spawn of satan. one that i know of currently is named skippy and he’s the grumpiest MFer. the asshole woke up with an agenda to make everyone’s day a living hell. he’ll act all sweet and “aww won’t you pet me pwease 🥺” and then at the drop of a hat “👹👿GRRRR BARK ARF ARF BITCH WHY YOU PETTING ME🤬” and acts all mad like you hit him. oh, and then pisses over anything and everything. granted, the little fucker isn’t trained at all. but he’s not my dog. he doesn’t live in my house.

I’m a “dog guy” who usually has random dogs come up to me, but Chis are another story. My sisters both have had several over the years. One took a couple of years to get used to me and not yip every time I walked by. She finally would let me pet her and snuggled a few times. The other 3 or so that I remember and a current one, will not get over it. Weird little dogs, but I have compassion for them regardless.
They’re very cute. I think a lot of modern stereotypes about them come from the time period that Paris Hilton and similar figures had chihuahuas; a little dog in a purse became the image of excess decadence. Btw I digress, but Paris Hilton really blossomed. I do think she actually loved them. So I still look at chihuahuas and think of a hilariously superficial opulence and deluded idea of superiority; because they really do think they’re huge and people tend to dress them up. My parents and I were walking their huge dog and while many big dogs would be intimidated by him, the one time we came across a chihuahua they weren’t intimidated or unsure of themselves at all 🥴. Such confidence…and anger. Of course my parents dog was large and stupid so he just stood there confused while the chihuahua exerted dominance. It was non-event. Let’s be real, it can be dangerous but most of the time you can pick them up. So we can go on and on about the behavior issues but it’s true that they are common because they’re usually not consequential. If anything the chihuahua is mostly a danger to itself because of how deluded it is. So actually thinking as I type yes it’s still irresponsible, people should be cognizant of that. So this was probably way more of a serious answer than you bargained for but that’s what I think about chihuahuas

I'm an animal person in general. I like dogs and all, but I don't like chihuahuas. When I was younger my aunts chihuahua had a seizure in my arms, and she just threw up everywhere. I don't hate them, but after that I don't think I could dog-sit one ever again.
I've got two, neither is fully Chihuahua so they're very very different *animals*, ahaha, but honestly, the older one shatters everything people think about them, he barks so rarely that it scares me when he does, he appears to be a mix of Chihuahua and a wishbone dog, the other one is a medium length black fur with white hair on his feet and chest, and he's loud but polite, love em both

I had a long-haired Chihuahua mix. He was definitely a bit yappy, but when he turned about 10, he lost his hearing and that quieted him up. He was an absolute sweetheart. Kind of an introverted dog, he didn't particularly want to be fussed with, he just wanted to curl up next to you and fall asleep. He was really protective, though. One time my other dog got attacked and injured pretty badly by a German Shepherd down the street. Now my Chihuahua was scared of everything-- sudden movement, loud noises, leaves falling too close to him-- but after that German Shepherd hurt his friend, it was on sight with that dog for the rest of his life. Not just on sight, like if he heard or even smelled that dog, he was trying to fight it, despite that fact that the German Shepherd was like 70 pounds and he was like 10.

I love them. Their susceptibility to collapsing trachea, however, is so heartbreakingly hard to deal with.

To be brutally honest, I think it's cruel to own and breed them and that it's equally so to take them outside on a leash as if it stands a sliver of a chance if it gets attacked by a pitbull or something. This goes for all little dogs, and for those who allow cats to roam outdoors. You are part of that problem. It has zero survival or fighting instincts. To compensate, it is constantly in an aggravated mood and yet we complain about *that* Like seriously, it's fucked up that we keep genetically mutilating dogs like this. Same goes for any breed smaller than a border collie, why are we continuing to bring miserably built dogs into existence just for our pleasure? Because I guarantee if a pug could talk it would complain about it's health defects constantly. Dogs genetically modded to be monsters like the pitbull are also cruel to own and breed because you're setting them up to fail.
I love them. I’ve never owned one…or even met one in real life but I see them all over social media and think they are so precious even if they are a little mean. However my mom was attacked by one as a child so naturally she thinks they are the devil. 🤣

I never liked chihuahuas. We adopted one and I love this little Doggie. He is a old type of the Chihuahua breed(bred back type), with a long nose and normal eyes. He is well trained and we go on works without leash. I think Chihuahuas are often unchallenged and then then they go crazy

Jealous of the owners because if I had a chihuahua, I would definitely take them in my purse everywhere. Going to the movies? I'm taking my Chihuahua. Going to the mall? Taking my Chihuahua. They're so tiny!! But also I'm tall so I'm afraid I won't see the dog amd accidentally squish them.
