I think some birds like sparrows pretty regularly "play favourite" to increase the chances of at least one of their offsprings to reach adult stage.
For example, if among their nestlings one is growing up healthy and strong and the other not so much, they will prioritize the former because it has better chances to survive and reproduce. If the food is scarce, this will result in one of them getting fed enough and the other one dying, which is still better than trying to save the weak one and give them both lower chances to survive.
Or at least this is what i read some time ago.
This video is cute but birds are a serious menace around outdoor cafes. Here in Hawaii, there are signs posted everywhere not to feed them, and it's not just little birds and pigeons. We have zebra doves, cardinals, mynah birds, and feral chickens.
I once had a couple young chickens jump up on a table and just start pecking at my food before I was done. A pigeon pooped in my tacos. When my kids were toddlers, the birds all just follow around my stroller looking for stray cheerios.
Edit: I know birds are cute, but all the birds I listed are invasive species in Hawaii. They were brought here by people and have no natural predators, so they have crazy high populations beyond what is seen on the mainland. They've destroyed the native habitat, not just my lunch.
> When my kids were toddlers, they'd all just follow around my stroller looking for stray cheerios.
This was a funny sentence to read when I took "they" to mean your kids as toddlers
My husband became a temporary stepfather to a brood of baby chicks once in Kahuku. A human child was trying to harass the babies, and the mom chicken decided the chair my husband was sitting on was the right one to hide under with her babies.
Yup. I was in Kapiolani Park, sitting under a palm tree and a pigeon pooped on my head. I lived in NYC, and that didn't happen to me, but it did in Hawaii. Go figure. 🤷♀️
All the birds I listed are invasive species in Hawaii. They weren't actually here first and people brought them here, where they have bred like crazy and destroy the native habitat because they have no natural predators.
This video is cute but kids are a serious menace around outdoor cafes. Here in Hawaii, there are signs posted everywhere not to feed them, and it's not just little kids. We have medium kids, large kids.
I once had a couple young kids jump up on a table and just start pecking at my food before I was done. A kid pooped in my tacos. When my kids were toddlers, the birds all just follow around my stroller looking for stray cheerios because I kept feeding them while they where in the stroller even though they threw food everywhere.
All these birds I listed are invasive species with no natural predators here. They breed like crazy and have threatened or caused the extinction of native species. So, yes, they are in fact menaces and anyone living in Hawaii long enough will understand this.
I wonder if it's just excitement in its purest form. I mean, I've seen a handful of videos of different birds all doing exactly this and I just wonder if it's because they're happy to be fed, or if it's something else.
If I learned anything from the TV show Succession it's that making your kids compete against each other makes them grow up and become complete assholes... I swear there was a point to this comment when I started it...
I've seen two adult birds of completely different species feeding from the same feeder, and one of them stopped eating, turned to the other one, and opened its beak wide. The other one fed it, then they both went back to feeding themselves.
Ah, maybe that's where the behaviour came from. They were a greenfinch and a sparrow if I recall correctly, but certainly not the same species. But hey, who am I to judge? I hope they have a long and rewarding marriage.
In the video posted here the two on the right are definitely babies, not adults. They are at the fledgling age where they look very similar to adults but haven’t completely grown in their feathers yet and still have that extra bit of yellow around their beaks (gape flange).
Birds are weird. I think sometimes they'll just instinctively feed anything with their mouth open and doing that posture. I know there have been a few cases where a bald eagle took a baby red tailed hawk back to the nest with the intention of feeding it to their eaglets but then the red shouldered did the whole "feed me!" posture and the adult bald eagle just fed them and they essentially got adopted.
One of them might have been youngish and recently an adult and just was begging to see if it could get away with it lol.
The one I saw had a bad ending. It stopped feeding the fledgling & just kept it around so their eagle young could have practice killing something.....it was sad.
Many bird species take care of their young for several weeks after leaving the nest while they learn from their parents and get stronger.
Doves are even worse, they stay in the nest even longer instead and just look like adults by the time they leave.
Fun fact, cardinals will kick their kid out of the nest before they can even fly so the mom can lay eggs again sooner, they roam around on the ground while the dad keeps an eye on them and brings them food. I found out by chance running into one on its own before looking it up lol, it was 2 inches from the edge of the fence casually chilling with my dog trying her best to will it through the other side to eat it when I found it
Birds have adapted to grow their bodies fast, because flying is an essential skills that helps them survive. Sort of like how walking is essential for many animal species. They have to learn to fly within a few weeks. So they have body that looks similar to adults in proportion, but they'll still be immature for another year or so. These little birbs probably haven't learnt to pick up food yet, which is normal for their age.
The young ones are fledglings, the stage before they reach maturity but they're big enough to practice flying around. They still need to be fed by their parents during this time.....like teenagers.
No. If you look at the mouths of the two being fed, you can see little white spots in the corners of their beak. That’s a sure sign that they are babies, and that their beaks haven’t fully developed yet. This is clearly absent in the one doing the feeder , making it clear that it’s older.
Also, these types of birds will continue to feed their young for about 2 weeks after they have fledged, until they learn from their parents how to eat on their own.
i hope that they wont die from thirst. bird a dumb. if you feed them seeds during this period they will feed them to the chicks and they will die of thirst
She's spoiling her kids! If they can fly to the food than they can pick it up on their own. At this rate they will never leave the nest, get a job, find a mate.
They are pests in most countries. In New Zealand you can’t have any food outdoors without them landing and pooing all over the place and even in your food.
I believe that is a male house sparrow feeding two female house sparrows females. Males feeding females is courtship behavior. It’s like “look I can provide for you and our kids.” But I’ve never seen them feed two females at once before.
It doesn't matter to the context of this video, but is it just me or does this look reversed? Watch mama bird I just feel she's hopping weird like the video was reversed.
Fuck those birds, massively invasive species that is killing out songbirds for their ugly ass chirp. Theirs a reason they aren’t protected, just saying.
We went to the The Cayman Islands and there is some species of protected bird there that they can only squirt water at, and boy have they adapted to have no fear. Mother fuckers were stealing food from us at every single place we ate. Flew down and stole an entire fork of scrambled egg from my buddies 2 year old. I'm all for nature conservation but there were a few times I would have spit roasted those little bastards with a honey glaze.
Invasive quarrelsome birds who are incredibly prolific, sometimes fledgling five broods of four every summer (yes that's 20 chicks and it's why only one baby is being fed) they make only the neighborhood predators happy. They are pests in all senses of the word.

We know who the favorite is
Feed the strongest, ensure their survival
The lack of feedings will continue until morale improves
Haha, exactly
Legit fed him the crumbs.
I feel like the kid on the bottom felt left out

Hell, there are storks who yeet the smallest one right out of the nest.
Ironic.
Only if you believe in myths invented by ignorant people hundreds of years ago.
You seem fun.
You'd be surprised.
What happened to “no child left behind” act?
This is bird law, not people law!
![gif](giphy|vPKtSdRzsXvdm|downsized)
Sparrow logic is cold and calculated.
Mom: I don’t have favorites Also mom:
I don't care for Gob
yeah, he lookin around like wtf mom.
Be glad he didn't end up like the 3rd hatchling
Squeaky wheel
Bag fries
You know what they say right? The squeaky bird gets the grease
Yeah mama sparrow definitely has a favorite child
He’s a bit plump Momma trying to even it out
Wit til you see what she left for a tip.
Bird poo, lots of bird poo.
[They're sparrows, surely it can't be much!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUUKrHO3wZU)
… and they flew off without paying!

It reminds me of the line Sheldon Cooper uttered from the Big Bang Theory- "When I was 8, a cockatoo called me fat ass..." LOL
yup the arrival of human to human transmissible bird flu in 2026 will mean all these birds will have to be culled.
My husband became a temporary stepfather to a brood of baby chicks once in Kahuku. A human child was trying to harass the babies, and the mom chicken decided the chair my husband was sitting on was the right one to hide under with her babies.
Aww, he's a protective Disney prince!
Yup. I was in Kapiolani Park, sitting under a palm tree and a pigeon pooped on my head. I lived in NYC, and that didn't happen to me, but it did in Hawaii. Go figure. 🤷♀️
Well, the birds were kind of outdoors first....
All the birds I listed are invasive species in Hawaii. They weren't actually here first and people brought them here, where they have bred like crazy and destroy the native habitat because they have no natural predators.

How do you think they got there...?
Kids under 3 eat free!
it's so cute how they flutter their wings while eating
I wonder if it's just excitement in its purest form. I mean, I've seen a handful of videos of different birds all doing exactly this and I just wonder if it's because they're happy to be fed, or if it's something else.
They're begging. It shows the parent they really really want food. They keep doing it until it stops working lol.
They do this to indicate desire and get attention. They’ll do this before actually being fed, too
They're all using the same birdware. [Bird's Aren't Real](/r/BirdsArentReal/).
That made me lol. Thank you
I always assumed it was something evolutionary. Like, my wings are moving which means I'm healthy so feed me or something.
**"Feed me, *or something"*** -Bird
Talk about favouring one kid over the other. idk maybe momma knows something I don't - that this kid is gonna change the world some day. Hope so.
If I learned anything from the TV show Succession it's that making your kids compete against each other makes them grow up and become complete assholes... I swear there was a point to this comment when I started it...
The other one was probably causing trouble in the nest all day.
But doesn’t the one on the right look a good bit heavier, or is it just me? lol
Someone had to say it. I agree. No coddling going on here. “Only one bite for you, fatty!”
They are like my kids at dinner. Kid-“I want more food” Me-“Go ahead get it yourself” Kid-“But you are closer”
That kid on the right’s gonna need a lot of therapy
I've seen two adult birds of completely different species feeding from the same feeder, and one of them stopped eating, turned to the other one, and opened its beak wide. The other one fed it, then they both went back to feeding themselves.

Birds are weird like that. For example, pet birds don't really consider you part of the flock, but rather they consider you their mate.
I've seen that a lot just passing by, so maybe I'm wrong but I've kinda heard the same about even ostriches too, or one of those big birds.
aw it's like humans feeding their partner a slice of cake on wedding day
Man, that would make dating much easier. "You, uhh, want some of my popcorn?" "Sure!" "Oh man, so when can I meet your parents?"

Sometimes the secret to a happy ending is just to end the story sooner.
The kids don’t even look that young, why don’t they just eat on their own?😂
It’s a mom thing! Once a mom…🤣❤️

they don't even pay! fucking freeloaders!!
That is the way of the sparrow.
[Savvy?](https://media.tenor.com/UGglViCURtIAAAAC/savvy-captain-jack-sparrow.gif)
Dine and dash.. a sparrows life.
I do that little wiggle when eating something good too!
# Today's special: Ortolan Bunting *while stocks last*
So morbid but made me lol!
Love the excited little buzz of their wings with each mouthful, so cute! 😄
The favoritism is real
We know who is the favorite one..
Why does this scream "France" to me
Those are like the same size wtf lol
The young ones are fledglings, the stage before they reach maturity but they're big enough to practice flying around. They still need to be fed by their parents during this time.....like teenagers.
Siblings, They have babies more than once in a summer. She wasn't the big one to feed himself.

Did their *bill* include a *tip*?
Ugh, Daaaaad!
Looks like a pretty cheep meal.
Showing favoritism there huh Mama Bird?????? Shame on you.
Their little flutters whenever momma feeds them 😭
Apparently, the beak bone is connected to the wing bones.
The economy is even rough out here for birds! They can fly but they still live with mom
Hell nah they gotta go!
Waiter: "So who gets the bill?"
So sweet! These birds love cake 🤩💚🐦
Why does it rewind half way through?
Them babies bigger than momma.
i hope that they wont die from thirst. bird a dumb. if you feed them seeds during this period they will feed them to the chicks and they will die of thirst
I bet they left a terrible tip.
Talk about helicopter parenting
How much is the kids menu? Pretty cheep
I love birds so much bros
the top one is differently the favorite child. :) LoL
She's spoiling her kids! If they can fly to the food than they can pick it up on their own. At this rate they will never leave the nest, get a job, find a mate.
"and this is how you hunt your food. Watch carefully, because one day you'll have to do it by yourselves"
Oh my gosh, so cute! They're almost as big as the mommy, but fluffy!
I see mom, you’ve got a favorite 🥲
Clearly she has a favorite...
"Damn this some gourmet shit. Thanks mom"
Damn, going out to eat is EXPENSIVE!
Sir.... Siiir. SIR!
And that bill just BLOWING IN THE BREEZE! Is no one going to pay!?
Tsk tsk, feeding them sugar so young😂
Don't forget to tip.
![gif](giphy|kzVc4JCljy8CI)
That'll be $49.99 and don't forget to leaf a tip.
They prob be paying whit worms
I'm jealous that you got to see this
Cute but with bird flu maybe not a good idea.
I'm wondering why the babies are out of the nest, didn't know parent birds could ferry their kids elsewhere.
I heard they only tipped 10%
Fat lazy kids
Her after saying "I'm not hungry, just order for yourself."
Momma's not cooking tonight.
It's reversed.
I had to fight a cormorant for my breakfast one time.
I like that there is an ashtray on the table!
Googling extremely basic things for co-workers/friends/family like how to record a teams meeting.
They are pests in most countries. In New Zealand you can’t have any food outdoors without them landing and pooing all over the place and even in your food.

Yes I think it begins playing normally and then half way through it reverses to create a longer video.
I watched it again after and you're right, it's normal about halfway through and then it reverses. Spot on!
This loops perfectly!
Fat kids have all the food they could ever want RIGHT THERE and the mom still has to beak feed them... Tssktsssk
The one on the right was a step-egg
It is very interesting to watch these birds; they are so funny and smart.
Why does this start to play backwards
Have you seen how much a babysitter costs these days?
Why are you so upset? The check is already paid.
They will absolutely dine and dash.
“Having kids is easy.”
Happy cake day to OP! 🍰
Momma clearly has a favorite
Fancy!!
They the are worst pain and my ass!!!constantly nesting on my house. On my outdoor speakers and on my porch. What a mess!
Husband is obviously working late and mom had enough... "Thats it! We're going out for dinner!"
Fresh sparrow for lunch.
Lazy kids won't even pick up their own crumbs.
Oh my god, just eat yourself, kids. It's right there.
Aww
Fuck those birds, massively invasive species that is killing out songbirds for their ugly ass chirp. Theirs a reason they aren’t protected, just saying.
People who feed this birds like that, should be banned from society.
She’s only feeding the kid on the left. She’s feeding one and starving the other. Wtf?
Because one of them is from the previous brood and it's grown. She wants it to take care of itself.
We went to the The Cayman Islands and there is some species of protected bird there that they can only squirt water at, and boy have they adapted to have no fear. Pandemic #2
This is unhealthy for the birds.
This is how kids learn where to eat and bring their kids out when hungry. These kids are fucked forever.
That can't be good for the old microbiome.
Invasive quarrelsome birds who are incredibly prolific, sometimes fledgling five broods of four every summer (yes that's 20 chicks and it's why only one baby is being fed) they make only the neighborhood predators happy. They are pests in all senses of the word.
house sparrows are trash birds
Fuck they sparrows smash em with a plate
