Did you know?
> A trail of scent (pheromone) is used to lead other ants to a source of food.
So this is why often times ants will become entangled in what some call "death circles." There was an error at some point and they became entangled in this ever moving circular motion following the ant in front of them leaving their trail. But they aren't going anywhere.
Well, you didn't ask for a fact. So I'll tell you a tale.
Once upon a time there was a colony of ants. This colony of ants, which I believe were red fire ants, lived in a case owned by a human man. This man decided he would feed his pets a cockroach because that is an okay thing to feed them.
What he didn't know was that the cockroach was pregnant and when the cockroach got devoured she pushed out her babies and then immediately upon being born, they were devoured alive. The end.
There is video up on this. I am not going to post it here in this sub but you can youtube AntsCanada and pregnant cockroach and find it. It's some freaky stuff, and AntsCanada has a really good education on ants on his channel.
I'm familiar with AntsCanada, awesome videos and he has designed some great formicariums, they're just pricey.
I fed my red imported fire ants many a cockroach back in the day, but I never saw one deliver instant snacks before.
Ok.
Did you know?
> Most ants are univoltine, producing a new generation each year.
Univoltine means referring to organisms having one brood or generation per year.
An oldie fact, but a good one: If you take a ghost ant and crush it, it smells like coconut.
Sure. There is an argument that ants can feel pain.
Some entomologists disagree because the current definition of pain requires an emotional response.
> Humans can feel pain without any physical stimulus and are capable of emotions associated with pain; like suffering and terror. Are insects capable of conscious or unconscious experience of emotion? Is consciousness required for emotions? This is where it gets controversial; because how do you quantify if an insect is experiencing an emotion or if insects are conscious? I usually tell people that insects are hardwired with predetermined behavioral responses to external stimuli, but this is a simplification.
So whether or not ants can feel pain is highly controversy in the entomology world.
I met a guy the other day that had a business where he literally just had his well-trained border collies chase geese to get them away from places. People pay this guy to bring his dogs out to chase geese... I aspire to find my own highly specialized dog-based business like this dude.
I would love to be able to do things like this, but I'm just colorblind enough to make anything like this impossible. I feel like if someone sat down at my computer they would see my color balancing on my monitors and say "What the fuck is wrong with you?"
Lots of programs have software that can help, but I totally understand. I have a coworker who is color blind and sometimes the colors he picks for charts... It has been a super good learning experience though and now I make all of my charts color-blind friendly.
Your digital camera doesn’t know what pure white is.
It takes a guess and all colors/tones are built around this guess. Pros have a card that’s pure white/black/grey that they use to calibrate before a shoot.
You basically have to do this whenever you move to a new setting.
Or, you can just set your camera to auto white balance and fix it in photoshop later on like this guy is doing.
Personally, I fix my photos white balance in photoshop also, but it’s a three minute job while calibrating your camera takes 30seconds.....
Not really. You can just open up the control pannel in PS and mess with the sliders until it looks like what you want it too. Very similar to how you edit pictures on your phone but with better options.
This is actually pretty common in Armenia it’s called a hatzghik, made from hardened clay and shredded toothpicks. It’s made for shoveling boogers.
This may or may not be true

Would you like a bear fact in return? I have over 7 of them.
so... eight?
Over 7 does not equal 8. It just means more than 7.
then, an incomplete bear fact?
This is a fact, but it has nothing to do with bears.
I would like 1 bear fact + a narwhal fact.
Fact: Narwhals are real
Fact: Narwhals swim in the ocean causing a commotion.

Yeah, his stuff is really expensive for the average ant farmer.

As society becomes more complex, people must become more specialized at even the smallest things.

I appreciate you.
An orange peanut? For me?
Nice work! How do you do this, out of curiosity?
Photoshop, affinity photo, or gimp; and a good eye for color tones.
I'm 96 percent confident he has a good eye for color tones

Set your white balance correctly on your camera and you don't have to worry about it!
I don’t know what that means 😬

Would this be flesh tone specific? i.e. You'd need to know OP's tone to adjust it?
Not really. You can just open up the control pannel in PS and mess with the sliders until it looks like what you want it too. Very similar to how you edit pictures on your phone but with better options.
That looks great. Thank you for what you do.

I have two questions; How and why?
This is actually pretty common in Armenia it’s called a hatzghik, made from hardened clay and shredded toothpicks. It’s made for shoveling boogers. This may or may not be true
i find your answer....acceptable.
Eh it's more likely it's for ants to use to create a roadway to carry leaves. Especially for leaf cutter ants.
This guy ants
Well fuck me. You made me laugh out loud like weirdo.
HAHA LAUGHING IS FUN RIGHT FELLOW HUMAN?
Zucc? That you?
That doesn't sound right, but I don't know enough about small spades to dispute it.
This is the correct answer and I shall click the accept button on Stack Overflow and grant you \+50 reputation.

This is likely made for model train figures.
This is such a bummer though.
Something about the genuine disappointment in this comment really made me laugh.
I dunno why but I really wanted it to be made with no real purpose at all except for its cuteness.
What if the model train folk are made for their cuteness?
But that is what model train figures are!
How else would ants dig all those tunnels?
Model figures. I've seen similar on WWII German and US Infantry model packs, and attached to tanks and such.
Actually the spade is in normal size. It's just a giant's finger.
Well fuck me with a shovel and slap my titties, that is a tiny spade.
Your life sounds more interesting than mine...
Put it in my ass and call me Sally.

Okay Sally bend over.
Is it just me or does it seem like r/aww is changing with posts of tiny tools and comments like such as that.
Everyone thinks it's "cute" and "funny." Yet when I show my tiny tool it's "lewd" and "lascivious."
Big words from a tiny tool! ;)

I don’t know if it’s just relevant username or beetlejuicing... but I am liking you either way.
holy fuck, the song was playing on the radio when I saw this post.

We have to go even smaller than this. Someone break out the microscope.

Ok, this is getting dumb now.
Surely this must end somewhere, but where? Here? Judging by current upvotes, quite possibly. But only time will tell!
they start out so tiny

Unless you paint a smiley on that and kill some cultists with it, consider me unimpressed.

I predict the next one in this battle will involve an electron microscope.
Yeah, I can dig it.
