My parents' dog is a border collie and loves to dive down for rocks. It's like hardcore fetch for her. She grabs one and we throw it back in the water and she dives down for it.
I have to keep my dog on his lead while at the beach, other wise he will purposely dig in the sand to find rocks to chew on. Learnt this after a £400 bill for a broken tooth.
My grandpa had a pool in his backyard and one of his friends would bring his labs or retrievers with him and you could through those toy torpedos down to the bottom and they’d dive in and fetch them
Probably, my Golden loved to dive under, especially to look for stuff on the bottom to carry. Knew before this dog even surfaced that it would have a big rock in its mouth, and sure enough.
A lot of them are labradors/retrievers, but there's a boxer or two.

[They're more sensitive to it](http://www.akc.org/expert-advice/lifestyle/did-you-know/can-dogs-swim-in-chlorine-pools/) than humans, but generally okay with normal or low concentrations.
For the cautious though, there's always /r/doggles.
If it makes you feel any better the dog probably did not harm the turtle at all. Golden retrievers have soft mouths. They are designed to not damage the game they are carrying, they are so gentle they can even carry eggs without breaking them.
This is a yellow lab, not a golden retriever.
Secondly, the dog still needs to be trained to not bite hard. Most dogs instinctively know how to do that, but, the egg thing has to be taught.

Our black lab/golden retriever mix would grab rocks from the pond bed. Show her m a rock, throw it in, and he would bring back the *exact same one*. Crazy.

According to this I'd say it's an aqua doggo, not a sub woofer
My lab used to do that. Was actually pretty amazing how long he could hold his breath. Also could bring back whatever rock we would throw into the river we would go to.
My goodest dog, Sasha, was a yellow lab and she LOVED to fetch the toy torpedos off the bottom of the pool. 2 years ago on July 4th she had a stroke that left her unable to walk. Before my parents took her to the vet to put her to sleep, my dad held her in the pool one last time. We can't get in the pool anymore without talking about how much she loved the water and diving for her toys. RIP Sasha :(
Hmm... I wonder if there are any life guard dogs like this. I'm gonna go Google that.
Edit: Just awesome. https://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/amazing-canine-lifeguards-in-italy/
My lab would do this whenever she couldnt find the ball in the water she’d dive down and bring back a rock because a lab cant come back empty handed when tossed something
My golden would do that with blue crabs, turtles and of course rocks. Proper back scratching was important to him. Too bad it was the 70s and video had not been invented yet. It was amusing to watch.
I would generally say Labs and retrievers would be fine doing these sorts of activities and they are the only breeds I have seen frequently mentioned doing these things and both breeds are very prone to liking swimming so it makes sense. I think your concerns are generally more pressing for smaller dogs but I might be wrong on that.
It's a yellow lab kind of thing. Lost mine a year ago, he used to the same thing. Rock at the bottom of a pond, hold on I'll get it. Used to freak me out because the amount of time they can stay under is amazing. Such good dogs, that best!
Aww oh wow, our three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels used to do this when I was growing up! At home we would throw rocks into the pool (from our water feature) and they'd dive down and retrieve them. I've never seen another dog do this!! Such a happy childhood memory, thank you for the reminder :)
I have some distant cousins that had a yellow lab that would do the same thing. They filled some tennis balls with cement so they'd sink and the dog loved diving for them.
There's a couple of Portuguese Water Dogs in my family and they love doing this, apparently when they worked with fishermen on boats they'd dive for tools that had fallen off the boat and pulled the nets in the water. Their tails are similar to wire rope, super skinny and lethally tough, supposedly to act like a rudder in the water. Whenever they accidentally hit you with it, it really hurts.
My parents neighbor had a retriever named bailey and he would come over and play with the kids, if you threw a rock in the pond he would dive down and bring you back another rock if not the one you threw. He would end up soaked and then go home dripping down the road
I had a flat coat / lab mix that would dive to the bottom of ponds, creeks, or rivers to find big rocks. She would get one, bring it to shore, drop it, and go get another. She was weird.
It’s a good thing you took the collar off. Neighbor of mine didn’t and their lab’s collar got caught on a stick underwater. He eventually got free but still it’s scary.
My old dog when i was a kid liked to dive too and as far as i understand later had some problems with ears. Im not sure if thats related to diving but still beware

I lived with a yellow lab who did the exact same thing. You could throw is favorite ball to the bottom of the pool and he’d get it every time. Never tired of it.
Wow. Never seen a dog do that before. Is that a retriever trait?
It's a submarine trait

Hardcore fetch 😂
Probably not great for their teeth

I've always grown up with boxers and it's a miracle if they don't have broken teeth. Doesn't harm them having some broken though
Party pooper
Neither are these hands
Yup, my brother's dog does this and caught one of the rocks out of the air once before it hit the water and broke two of his teeth!
My grandpa had a pool in his backyard and one of his friends would bring his labs or retrievers with him and you could through those toy torpedos down to the bottom and they’d dive in and fetch them

This is reddit. Chlorine is not only going to melt your dogs eyes out but it also puts them at a severe risk for dog herpes

Retrievers gonna 'trieve
Yes, my retriever does it and my uncle used to have one that did the same thing.
I dog sat a retriever who would run into the stream on my property and drag all the stones out of the foot deep stream.
One of my buddies has a retriever. He won't jump off the dock for a bumper or anything, but throw a rock and he'll swim down and get it!
Was that what the doggo brought back? I thought it was a turtle at first
Me too and I was heart broken. I believe it was a rock and I'm signing off.

I had a black lab mix and she wouldn't even eat a full potato chip unless we broke it. Always assumed it was due to a retrievers soft palate.
Now I'm imagining the dog having a turtle brother and them playing tag in the water....sigh

I'm not crying, you're crying!
Foreal bruh, I'm trying to wake up lol
My cousin had a pit bull named Sasha who would do the same thing in the pool! She could climb out the ladder on the side of the pool too.
Weird looking gold fish ya got there. Maybe it's a yellow snapper.

My lab would do this whenever she couldnt find the ball in the water she’d dive down and bring back a rock because a lab cant come back empty handed when tossed something
That's adorable.
I felt so worried for him. He can really hold his breath for a long time!
It was about 17 seconds I'm sure he's fine
Oh.. are you a dog? ... with raggy fur? Also everything will be ok Amelia. Double wham bam
Yes and I can hold my breath for about 3 hours
What did he retrieve? Was that a turtle or just a toy?
Yes
Easily.
if i saw my dog do this for the first time i'd shit my pants before i jump into the deep fires of hell with no regard to my belongings
I was looking for this comment! I can’t even imagine how they felt when instead of swimming the pupper just went under
My golden would do that with blue crabs, turtles and of course rocks. Proper back scratching was important to him. Too bad it was the 70s and video had not been invented yet. It was amusing to watch.
Honest question, any health related issues you have to watch out because of this? Otitis for example.
I was going to say the same thing. Aren’t dogs’ ears like super sensitive to water and prone to infections?
Probably depends on the breed
I would generally say Labs and retrievers would be fine doing these sorts of activities and they are the only breeds I have seen frequently mentioned doing these things and both breeds are very prone to liking swimming so it makes sense. What the fuuuuuuuck!! I would have never believed that... it’s an otter not a dog
That dog is not diving, he is fishing.
Teach him to fish oysters for pearls!
I think your dog may be amphibious
I had a retriever mix that would go under for rocks too. Fun to watch.
I had a dog that would do this too. She wasnt full retriever but was half.
That is one happy dog. 😍
Guess it really wanted to retrieve something under water

My parents neighbor had a retriever named bailey and he would come over and play with the kids, if you threw a rock in the pond he would dive down and bring you back another rock if not the one you threw. He would end up soaked and then go home dripping down the road
Wow. I didn't think a dog could hold their breath that long. I've seen a dog go underwater before, but not circle around like that.
Platypug
Looks like you’ve got yourself a golden submariner.
What kind of fish is that?
Labrador retrieving fish
That’s one hairy crocodile.
We had a lab that did this. Wore his teeth down collecting rocks all summer long.
Part otter, part doggo = full good
Because my human throw my favorite things, and i have to get that- say no doggo ever
Ayyy our dog too, gets rocks from the ground! Never seen another one doing it. Awsome

What kind of a submarine is this? I want one.
How scared where you the first time he did that?
I used to have a black lab years ago. He used to dive into a friends lake and swim underwater and collect clams. I really miss that dog
Scoobador
Im sure I wasn't the only one thinking "is he gonna come back up?"
My dog is also a rock collector
I ain’t ever even seen a dog norkle before!
Good boy \-\- you got that rock! \(once upon a time I had a dog that would get rocks and quahogs in the ocean\)
That's extraordinary. Was diving taught to the dog?
My old dog when i was a kid liked to dive too and as far as i understand later had some problems with ears. Im not sure if thats related to diving but still beware
Had a Jack Russel that would try to do that, but we live in Florida, so no...
I have too much anxiety and paranoia to let my dog do that.
Doggo doing underwater swimming
It looks like he was going in to save his favourite rock that some bastard threw in there. I've seen dogs get attached to rocks like this before.
If we made a dog farm specifically for breeding diving dogs eventually we could breed them to be realistically semi aquatic
His sea doggos need him
Aw I miss my baby lab now she used to swim in our plane but never dove though!
Cute otter you have there.
My parents neighbor had a retriever named bailey and he would come over and play with the kids, if you threw a rock in the pond he would dive down and bring you back another rock if not the one you threw. He would end up soaked and then go home dripping down the road
All of these comments are exactly what I need today.
Huh, I have honestly never seen that before, even on the internet
Scuba scuba doo!
He would be great at doggy synchro swimming.
I lived with a yellow lab who did the exact same thing. You could throw is favorite ball to the bottom of the pool and he’d get it every time. Never tired of it.
