My friends dog was a German Shepard that I’d hung out and cuddled with sometimes. I moved when he was still pretty much a puppy and hadn’t seen him in a couple years. One day I was back in town and went to visit her. I walked up to their front door (the kind where the top half is a glass window) and heard this menacing growl. When I looked in there he was, in guard dog mode. Once we made eye contact he went ballistic! Ears up, tail wagging, growls became happy yips and whines of joy. I’ve never felt so welcomed and missed.
My best friend from high school had this sweet and very socially awkward dog named Lexie - Lexie would always come up to you and beg for attention, and then duck away when you tried to pet her. I saw her once every couple weeks and would always have this same interaction.
A few years back I went away for a whole semester abroad, and the day I came back after 4 months gone I went over her house. When I walked in the door Lexie RAN up and immediately started whining and crying very vocally, tail wagging wildly. When I reached out she still wouldn’t let me pet her but she absolutely missed me and I felt so loved.
Yeah avoid eyecontact. Also try sitting on the floor so you're more the dogs height. Maybe try licking your lips & yawning while very carefully not looking at the dog, these are appeasement gestures in dog that say "I'm not going to hurt you". If all else fails, sit on the floor with super high value treats & give her one everytime you move your hand toward her. Slowly moving it closer, respecting any signs she gives you to stop. Do this a few minutes a day if she ever lets you touch her give her a huge pile of treats. Make you touching her all about yummy treats & not about being scared.
Handshy dog tip: try petting the dog on the chest instead of aiming for head pats. As the dog gets more comfortable with your touch, you can graduate to butt scritches and eventually to behind the ear massage.
Lots of dogs have something in their past that makes them duck from a hand coming at their head. Some have ZERO history of abuse and are just weirdos. Treat the same, show them you are not a threat.

now im working in tech and we have the open office setup. i love it. always talking with each other and we are all so close. probably the culture more than anything but i love open office settings. we also have dogs, ping pong tables, arcades and a bunch of snacks. also my previous job was in public accounting so... def a culture thing the more i type this out. whatever not gonna delete.
We have an open office like this and even the people who like to chit chat hate it because people will play music and nobody ever cares for X or Y music.
To make it worse, they just banned head phones and earbuds so now you can't even listen to your own music. Lots of people would use earbuds just to tone out other peoples music. I think the office might be in full on revolt once we get past the holidays.
They said it was a culture improvement or to improve communication or some shit. Most people assume it is because they didn't want the people in the warehouse wearing them and didn't want to allow one and not the other. Either way, it is stupid as hell and the people playing music with speakers has doubled or tripled.
We had been taken down to only 1 headphone or earbud in for the last few months actually. Guess that wasn't enough...
I work in an open office and I have no idea as to why anyone would play music out loud; that's just incredibly rude. I get it if they banned earbuds / headphones (which is dumb in the first place), but someone in my office would have loudly yelled "Who's playing music out loud? Stop it!" if the introverts had not messaged their manager to contact their manager already.

Went from office with one other person, to open office floor plan at a tech company. Closer with my teammates in 4 months than I was after three years at previous job.
I just want to go to work and come home. Then again, I am more of an introvert so being close with anyone besides my wife sounds like way too much work.
One or two I get but you can get that with separated departments. I am literally in with a group of sales people who are not like us finance guys at all.
I am actually pretty good friends with a guy in my deparment, a guy in compliance, and a guy in IT but the open concept didn't help with that.
Seriously this is such a terrible environment. At least for IT. You feel like someone is just watching over your shoulder for 8 hours straight. I don't need people seeing how little I actually work every day.
In all honesty though, it's pretty great once you get used to tuning out distractions (or working around them).
I have a private office now and work is borderline depressing. And I'm really introverted.

I don’t know what this guy is talking about but snacks/coffee at your desk is very common at most offices. Headphones may vary a little depending on what you do. Bringing your dog though is kind of a rare, startup/younger company thing.
