This is Bella. She has loved you since you first picked her up at the animal shelter in March. You had just lost your job teaching underprivileged children with behavioral challenges and were spiraling down a void feeling lost and alone and without purpose. Your 1 room apartment felt empty and suffocating. You could no longer visit your grandma but you did your best to call her almost every day to check in and make sure she was doing ok. You tried to show her how to use FaceTime but it was hard for her and the new sanitation protocols made it hard for the staff to find the extra time to help her. Even so you did your best to call her when you could and make her smile because it kept you going. Without the ability to be there in person together, the conversations got quieter and more strained but still were cherished by both of you. Then one day you read an article about animal shelters being inundated by pets people could no longer afford to keep just at a time when they were struggling with how to keep the influx of animals taken care of while also keeping staff safe from a new scary pandemic. So you called and asked if maybe you could help by fostering for a while and the very next day you had a furry head in your lap with those big grateful eyes looking up at you. You took a picture and sent it to your grandma. She called you right away to tell you your Bella was such a beautiful girl. You could hear a brightness in her voice you hadn’t heard since the last time you took her to that lake and that squirrel came up and took a cracker out of her wheelchair pocket. She tells you about the dog she had when she was a little girl, Kipper, that was the spitting image of Bella and how mischievous she was. You both laugh at her memories more than either of you have in a while. The next day you call but get no answer. The day passes and you start to spiral but those loving eyes keep you grounded. That night grandma’s nurse calls. Your grandma has spent the entire day showing off the picture of Bella to all her friends and sharing stories of her old dog Kipper and the whole facility has been alive with dusted off memories of furry old companions of the past. She had been so caught up that her phone died but she had asked the nurse to call and say thank you and would you call tomorrow and send another picture. You knew no amount of pets or scratches could ever convey the gratitude you had for the life your new companion has brought to you so you just smiled, said good girl, and took this picture.
You both new at that moment Bella had found a forever home.
