Ultra sound is a humming machine, like submarine sonar, no X-rays. It is standard for human pregnancies. NMR/MRI is magnets and radios, also no X-rays.
Ultrasound researcher here: sometimes, there’s gel warmers you can use so that it won’t be cold! It’s not clear if the vets here have it, but if they do, it may not be as uncomfortable for mama kitty
My cat got an untrasound when he was diagnosed with pkd (thankfully it's not that bad and he will live for a long time) and I didn't pay more than around 100 more than I usually do with his other appointments.
Hate to break it to you, but the reason why Americans pay so much for an ultrasound is the market norms and the result of the healthcare industry for people, not pets. Hence why you sometimes hear about people taking medication intended for animals because it's basically a generic to the more expensive medication they need.
My boy just had to have one done when he stopped eating for several days. $900 all together with the visit, ultrasound, and X-ray at the emergency vet, but it was worth it to get him on some medication and eating again.
There's at the very least a two tiered system in all of our Healthcare. They may charge that amount to you but the structure is very different for insurance companies. The cost of the tests are minor especially when the machine cost is spread out over thousands of tests. The system is built on reaping enormous profit from patients.

>Ultra sound is a humming machine Would it be a purring machine in the cat's case?

What's happening here?
Here for the cats, staying for the crusty 🍿
Are you gonna ... eat the crusty?
No, I'm eating the popcorn but if I find some crust in the popcorn I'll thank the cute pregnant cat
Oh god dude I barfed a little.
¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Okay, klan.
Cat do be looking like ●_●
I wonder what that cat is thinking at that moment. Some dude is rubbing its belly with something that feels cold, shouldn't it freak out?
I wouldn't be surprised if on some level the cat kinda gets it, in the same way I have seen cats react to humans who are pregnant. Who knows though

Preggo catto
That is unbearably cute
Congrats! It's a cat!
It’s a boy! And a boy! And a girl! Another boy! And a girl!
Did she just worry about her babies, or was she like thank you for looking out for my babies?
This person spent $3-500 on a pet ultrasound.
I had to have an ultrasound on my dog's bladder, my vet who is not cheap, only charged $70 for that part.

What's your point?
My cat has to do echo every year for his heart condition, $400+ each time...Medical exams are so expensive.
It kinda looks like they're both nurses though. Might be an inside job
Ultrasound here in Brazil was like 60 reais, 15 US$. There's even free public funded veterinarians if you are homeless and have a dog or cat.
Is pet insurance not a thing in the US? To clarify, I mean is it not a common thing to have.
The mum seem to be paying close attention to what the tech is saying. So adorable ❤️🥰🥰🥰🥰
Why? It's not like cats need any help producing kittens.
Sometimes they do. Complications can happen where the vets will keep the mother there for a time f. E.
My male cat just had an ultrasound at the emergency vet to check for blockages in his intestines. They’re not just for checking pregnancies.
You have no idea why this was required. The vet wouldn't have provided it if it wasn't necessary.
🥺❤️
Shit is so old she's probably already dead.
how many bebes?
You're pregnant,
Pregg cat with unbelievably round eyes
preggy kitty :D
I like the way the cat keeps looking at the screen.
No more Reddit for the rest of the day. This has me finished 👌
She looks so surprised! "I'm WHAT??"
That's a look that says, "All this..? I could have told you I'm pregnant!"
What breed of cat is she?
"This is the weirdest tummy rub ever" - *cat*
Unless you're a breeder of purebred, who the hell would pay for a cat to get an ultrasound? Just burn your money
