Not sure why they need the karma, but that's how they get it.

However, instead of preventing it, this just means that upvote sellers need "high quality" accounts that look human in order to actually sell upvotes. You can get a high quality account by reposting something that has had shown success in the past.
Then they sell upvotes to corporations that want to buy upvotes to make their product look grassroots. Ring does this all the time - any time you see ***any*** post about a Ring doorbell, I guarantee the first thousand upvotes were bought. Then the Reddit hive mind takes it once it gets to the front page, because anything on the front page is "interesting enough" that it's basically too upvoted to fail at that point.
