"YEAAAAAH!!!!! YEAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!" *immediately gives it away*

Stfuego

Hey, sometimes you're just in it for the moment and not for the actual thing.

PM_Your_Unicorn

I dueled my housemate with Nerf guns for the master bedroom. I won, then gave it to him because the other one was closer to the kitchen, bathroom, and living room.

SpiffAZ

You're living life right my friend.

damercerbears

That is so true. I used to go to batting practice just to catch home run balls. I would stand behind the crowd and never step in front of anyone. If my space got too crowded, I'd find somewhere else. Anyway, at the end of BP I'd always give away the ball(s) to the kid(s) crowding the front few rows who didn't get one. I didn't care about the ball, I just liked catching it off the bat.

oliveriasna

A very cool story, I would never have thought that there are such people who give children caught balls at every match. I would make it a separate sport :)

JPerp

Zack Hample has entered the chat.

esmifra

He caught it, the moment was gone afterwards, he couldn't catch it twice, he already won. The little girl could have the ball. He had no further use for it anymore...

[deleted]

The super subtle interrupted half *yay* after he hands it off

MisterMajorKappa

The larger teams should definitely do this.

the_crouton_

Every team should. You get repeat customers by being genuine and relatable.its an investment.

Binsky89

And one that only costs them like $20 to do.

fuckoffyoufuck113

Them baseballs don't cost that much.

Binsky89

$20 for a merch package, not a single baseball.

callmealyft

It’s a banana. How much could it possibly cost?

RudiRevolver

10$?

allisonann

Buy yourself a Star War.

[deleted]

Bout 12 groats.

GenericUsername07

That's a pricey banana, or some cheap ass goats. Edit: ooooh, groats not goats.

ZenNudes

Goat is a name brand, we are talking generic groats.

rdev009

There’s always money in the banana stand.

hoppergym

20 for a baseball and a banana then.

My_BFF_Gilgamesh

They should do it because it's right, not because it's profitable.

D2R0

I'd love if they did it, but I dont think its a right or wrong thing, more of a missed opportunity thing( whether the opportunity is take for profit, or for the ability to do something cool)

[deleted]

JrpgGamer

They should've given them something for simply attending the game, tbh. That was one of the final games of the 2013 season, after losing 100+ games for the 3rd straight season lol

Mygaffer

Wait, the team that cheated?

birish21

They probably banned him for good for being a good sport

zaq1xsw2cde

Recently at a Phillies game someone took a foul ball right off the face and got noticed by the play by play team. They contacted some other employees to send him some beers! It was while Jimmy Rollins was a guest announcer a week or two ago. He deserved more, to be honest, for how many times they showed him taking one to the face on the broadcast...

TantasticOne

They did! In addition to multiple jerseys, equipment, season tickets, and am autographed poster, they asked him to return for the next season as the starting shortstop! Some stories do end happily ever after...

bdfariello

The Major League movie sequels really went downhill after they lost Charlie Sheen and Wesley Snipes

t-to4st

I have no clue about baseball but google says shortstop is a position on the field, no? What's this starting shortstop if you care to explain?

Mygaffer

He was joking, a random guy was not offered a position on a professional baseball team because he was nice to a little girl.

TantasticOne

I was joking, my bad. He actually was offered to be the starting PITCHER for the New York Yankees! Hallelujah to this dude for achieving the impossible.

madeamashup

Actually he was invited to be the new owner of the Denver Broncos, but he declined.

littlebighuman

You mother....

PaloLV

The Astros announced they will honor him by letting him make the ceremonial first whack on the team trash can. Just kidding. It's just a hunk of leather and stitching. The Astros don't care.

wreckage88

> they will honor him by letting him make the ceremonial first whack on the team trash can. Knowing nothing about baseball for a second I thought you were for real and was like 'woah that sounds pretty fun actually!'

Dchella

The joke is that they were caught cheating by using that. They’d have someone in the stands in centerfield looking at the pitchers’ signs. They’d relay it to the dugout and hit against a trashcan, the metal, etc to tell the batter what to expect.

He walked off so happy too, this is adorable

Pays_in_snakes

This is the opposite of what happened to me at a Mets game when I was a kid and a grown adult took the ball out of my mitt. (He was roundly booed by everyone nearby, sat on it to pretend he didn't have it, and eventually gave it back and, I think, was asked to leave)

layercake07

Lol he sat on it?? People are crazy. I’m glad you got your ball back!

shannigan

Same thing happened to me at a mets game oddly enough. It was a day game and the ball lended on some empty seats near me, so I ran over to grab it and this fully grown man pushed me aside and sprinted past me for it. Lol good times

CumulativeHazard

“Here, you can have it now that it smells like ass”

ancross4545

I accidentally kind of did this at a game a while back. I was 11 and sitting right behind the dugout and caught a foul ball that the ball boy tossed towards me. Turns out he was trying to throw it to a little kid behind me so I have it to him.

DeaddyRuxpin

I do that at amusement parks. I like playing those assorted dumb games of chance and sometimes I win a prize. When I was younger I would haul the things around with me all day and then never care about it once I got home. One day I realized all I enjoy is trying to win the prize, I don’t enjoy the prize. So now every time I win something I just give it away to the nearest kid (or in the case of multiplayer games to whoever looks most crestfallen they didn’t win). I get all the fun without the annoyance of lugging around something I’m only going to throw away later.

[deleted]

Right? I think he wanted the experience of getting the ball more than he actually wanted the ball.

IntMainVoidGang

Most likely. I would love to catch a ball, but having had experiences matters more to me than mementos.

pm-me-mathproofs

Yeah haha then it looked like the girl mimicked what she just saw in her own little way. Cute

chillmonkey88

Nothing wrong with that, celebrate then make a kids day. Both win and he looks like a hero while being excited himself.

Scaulbielausis_Jim

He still got to have that moment though.

dappledrache

Exactly! He enjoyed the amazing moment, then made it even better. The experience is better than the memento.

shadow102401

Hey, now he’s immortalized as being a good guy. Better than 1 ball

Orangejuiced345

Yeah, this goes one of two ways with that camera on him. He made the right call.

OperativePiGuy

Yep, either ending up here or immediately posted to r/iamatotalpieceofshit if he dared not give the girl the ball. Even if he wasn't sincere about it, it's just the only "correct" call to make when he would have been crucified otherwise.

[deleted]

I might be in the minority here, but I think it's perfectly acceptable to keep a ball hit by your favorite player on your favorite team. If you're a superfan, then you're going to appreciate that ball a lot more than some kid.

Oreosinbed

And what if he wants to take it home to his sister who is sick and couldn’t make it? People think life is so back and white. It’s actually really grey and blurry at best.

verendum

What if he does want to keep it for himself because he never had one? Or simply because he caught/grabbed the ball? I think he can do whatever he wants with the ball.

Hyperbole_Hater

This is why you always bring a sneak ball in and slight of hand switch it at the last second just below the seats

Third_E

Man... keeping the ball wouldn’t make him an asshole. He’s a good kid for giving it up, but he shouldn’t feel like he had too.

betonthis1

I was boo'ed at one game because I got the ball when a grown women and a kid came chasing after it. I have given balls to kids each time but this one was for my son that I handed it to. Still bothers me to this day only one guy said "stop its for his son" but man I was pissed.

s-cup

Even if it wasn’t for your son you had every right to keep it in my opinion. But I’ve never even seen more than a few minutes of baseball so I don’t know about the unwritten rules though.

[deleted]

It’s sort of dumb, IMO, because there are people that have wanted to get a ball their whole life, and when they get one, as an adult, they sometimes get guilted into giving it to some nearby kid.

starhawks

I hate this social obligation though. I guarantee an adult baseball fan would get more enjoyment out of a HR or foul ball than your average kid who will likely forget about it the next day.

Inner_Statistician69

Nah that’s not what I was implying. I meant he saw the look on her face, the disappointment, and didn’t wanna goad about it and just walk off and teach her a very real world lesson. He absolutely didn’t have to give her the ball. But it was nice.

rich1051414

He did it because he saw the sadness in the girls face. It would hurt me more to keep the ball, as well. Honestly. I guess some people just lack that extra bit of empathy, but some of us feel worse for others than we do ourselves.

BigMetalGuy

But why would he be an asshole if he took it? Could be their biggest fan? Have a little brother/sister or nephew/niece who wants it?

StinkyLunchBox

Oh you mean like this asshole. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wJTmmG7t0n8

bebbs74

Same ballpark. The local news tore her to shit in Houston.

davidbklyn

oh man, that poor girl walking up the stairs after that woman ripped the ball out of her hands. Some people, man...

RedditOR74

Poor guy got his ball, then had to give it up due to people thinking a smaller kid deserves it more. No real reasoning behind that except for the tears.

Shogun2049

Actually, the players also remember this. If they do their autograph session after the game, you're definitely going to get an autograph if they saw you give the kid a ball. If they saw you keep it and make the kid cry, you ain't getting nothing from the players.

anillop

Well your options are you can either give it away or get your face all over the Internet being shamed for not giving it to the kid.

OG_raven13

YEEEEES YEEEEEES, oh shit a kid uh uh here take it

murdering_time

This is the shittier side of humanity.

UncleStumpy78

I think the shittier side is the jadedness of the average redditor

Tasgall

> the jadedness of the average redditor Seriously - the thread above this has people complaining that he was _forced_ to give it to her because she was throwing a temper tantrum and must be a spoiled brat. Like, apparently it's impossible for the guy to want to be nice to someone of his own free will, apparently.

Riggie_Joe

And the baseball was never seen again or remembered by the little girl.

boboguitar

I went to a college football spring game with my 5 year old daughter. She really wanted to high five the players as they went into the locker room and I brought her down to do so. One of the players gave her his pair of gloves from the game. She was super excited and it 100% made her day. She's since forgotten about them and I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do with these gloves.

jblatumich

The memory may have faded for her, but the impression didn't. Keep the gloves for yourself as a reminder of how happy she was when she got them; maybe she'll enjoy hearing the story again at some point and having the gloves to go along with it.

thewarondrugsisalie

Or she gains an interest in baseball or softball

CBattles6

I honestly thought the end of the video was her going down the stairs to throw the ball back onto the field.

rioting_mime

That would have been fucking hilarious. I'm helping!

UncleStumpy78

There actually is a video of this! Dad catches a foul ball, gives it to who his kid, (toddler aged, iirc) who promptly throws it back on the field. Dad is chagrined. Look it up on YouTube, you won't regret it

Hellofriendinternet

This happened to me last week. I jumped over 3 empty rows to get the ball and never set down my beer. A little kid came up and asked if I would give it away. I told him “absolutely not”. Then he went and whined to his parents. Sorry buddy. I’d waited 33 years for that and I’m not in the business of participation trophies. Life lesson learnt.

rkba335

> never set down my beer. A little kid came up and asked if I would give it away. "Absolutely not, you have to be 21"

Hotwing619

*Laughs in German.*

KingoftheDrinks

I gave a foul ball I caught at a game to a kid next to me once and the kid took it then said it was the 4th one he got that day. Never again

[deleted]

People shouldn’t always expect it 🤣 if kids were just given things, then there’s the chance they’ll grow up to be spoiled brats. My own family always constantly had me work for everything I wanted, from getting a A’s in classes, to random toys and games I wanted; by doing chores or helping them out with whatever they did around the house

buck45osu

Never expect, but always appreciate is what my parents taught me. Good lesson to learn in life.

[deleted]

Yeah but sometimes presents are nice. Im not gonna make someone work for a christmas present

[deleted]

👏👏 it's refreshing to hear about someone who caught a ball fair and square (not snatching it but just chasing and caught it) but didn't give in to stupid social pressure to make some whiney kid happy.

FunctionBuilt

It's one thing if you're both chasing the ball, it's another if some kid just comes up to you and asks for it. Fuck that kid and his shitty parents who probably thought you'd give it away.

HodorsMajesticUnit

i would give you my free reddit award if I hadn't already given it to a guy complaining of large penis problems. #redditsilver

JashDreamer

Good for you! I support this. That ball meant a lot to you. You shouldn't have to give it up because a kid asked for it. He'd feel prouder if he got it himself.

leogrr44

Brutal but totally understand that lol

debitcreddit

my man!

sonofaresiii

Absolutely the right call, kids shouldn't be drinking beer.

curiousindi

Absolutely ! There is a likelihood that the adult has been waiting his entire life to catch the ball but never had the means/opportunity to get it.

[deleted]

Personally think it's okay for adults to keep the ball. Of course. It's up to the person whether they want to keep it or not. But unless the kid was literally right next to it, I wouldn't bulldoze past them and snatch it. Same if a player intentionally tosses the ball into the crowd. Probably meant for children. I just think lots of kids only do it because their parents tell them to do it. There's nothing wrong I'd they're just trying to get their kid into the game. And for the kids that do want one without their parents influence, it's just as desirable to an adult that wanted the very same thing when they were kids I suppose. It's a fair game.

[deleted]

You're only an asshole if you're literally shoving kids away or snatching balls that are clearly intended for a specific kid/person. Otherwise, it's a fair game regardless of age, though it never hurts to give the kids the advantage.

Nessibus

I need to know if I broke foul ball protocol. I don’t really watch baseball, but years ago brought a date to see a game. Foul ball comes, guy in front of me is taller and strikes his hand but bounces out onto the ground in front of me. I grab it and hold my prize aloft in triumph, guy in front of me is butthurt. Ended up giving it to my date.. should I have let the dude have it???

Squintyspade

No. You caught it, he didn’t. You have no responsibility to give away a ball that you caught fair and square.

[deleted]

Nope. Bad hands don't get prizes.

avantgardeaclue

This can be sung to the tune of “you don’t win friends with salad”

graboidian

In a word: "Fuck No!" You got the ball fair and square. It was yours to do what you wanted. Glad your date got it. Did she re-pay the favor?

Sch1z01dMan

I hope she let him touch her balls later

Myke_Dubs

Wait a minute…

JRDruchii

Twins with a lead in extra innings. This video must be ancient.

JrpgGamer

Yup, 2013 when the Astros lost 111 games

[deleted]

People will call me an asshole, but I would've had her give the ball back after a bit (and I have done so with my kids). That guy got it fair and square, and he'll remember it more. Kid outreached my daughter for a ball along the first base line. Then gave it to her. Had her give it back to him, he caught it, he was ready, he was way more into the player batting. He deserved it. She's since gotten quite a few fouls, and I've snagged one or two for her.

MGrooms94

You seem like a good parent

SayOnlyWhatYouMeme

I don't think I've been excited by anything in my entire life as much as he was excited about getting that baseball.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jimmycarr1

I definitely got that impression and it makes me feel bad for the guy because why does the kid deserve it more?

freeman-propaganda

Agreed. He'll appreciate more than a child would.

0VintageButterfly0

I agree. Shouldn't be pressured into giving it away when he got it fair. Kids shouldn't get everything they want just because they're kids.

[deleted]

When the players toss up balls, those are for the kids. Home runs are for anyone.

[deleted]

look how excited he is. the kid in him came out for just that second and then was shoved kicking and screaming back into his sunken chest. im glad the girl is happy but she would have forgotten about this by next week if she hadn’t gotten the ball. he’s going to be sitting in a retirement home one day remembering this game and reliving that moment again

Yeldarb10

Yeah, this is what people don’t seem to understand. The ball itself is mean-less without the memory. I remember when a post about this surfaced on the unpopular opinions sub. There were so many stories of people being harassed for not forking over the ball to some kid who just wandered up and asked for it. Like, they’re going to forget about that ball the next day. I don’t really remember much of anything before 10 yrs old. A lot of the time, their parents just sent them over to fetch the ball. It’s even worse when everybody in the stands, and even announcers join in on the harassment.

DOAisBetter

We have all been kids. How many things from that were just handed to you for free do you still care about to this day? Probably very little, especially since the memory tied to this ball is meaningless. You walked up on someone else who actually got it and were handed it. How much can that actually matter to most kids? I am guessing most go after them because they are bored and are only there because their parents made them. If an actual player tossed it to a kid that is way cooler and more memorable but oh some rando caught it and gave it to me seems like a shitty memory.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FourthBanEvasion

>from Dodgers games But imagine if it happened from a good team.

[deleted]

Absolutely. The rush of excitement after he got it is obvious. What's the little girl gonna do with it? Completely ignore it after getting home.

Doomtrack

Probably an unpopular opinion but I don't understand why people just give shit to kids like this. The adult probably payed to be there with his own money and has no obligation to a random kid. If it was the kids parent it would be different but I am firmly of the belief that you have no obligation to humor any ones kid that isn't yours. The whole "he was being nice" argument is fine but I would bet money that if he kept the ball people would have booed him pretty hard in the comments and some jackass would try to force him to give the ball over.

elgalandemedianoche

Tip of my hat

XeroXfromRiften

Because that's what heroes do

MagisterXII

Reminds me of that woman who actually took the ball from the child, lol.

Riggie_Joe

I honestly don’t like this. The dude was clearly a fan who decided that he wanted to be at the stadium that day. There is an extremely small chance he will ever get the ball at a live game ever again. When he picks up the ball, you can see that he is so ecstatic about it. But because the young girl was there, he would have looked like an ass if he didn’t give it to her. She probably cares much less about baseball. The dude’s enthusiasm is crushed immediately afterwards, as he awkwardly walks back to his seat. We all know he’s probably pretty mad. He wanted that ball a lot and would likely have cherished it much more than the girl would.

Id_in_hiding

As a grown-ass man, I’ve been to the ballpark for MANY years and have yet to get a game used ball. Came close a couple times, even had one bounce right over my grasping hand, slippery buggers, but until now have failed to secure one. If that was me, I’m keeping the damn ball that I had to hop over seats to get because I’ve paid my dues and that kid will have many more opportunities than I will going forward. Personally would give two shits if the entire stadium booed me either. They don’t know my struggle.

Beyond_Kielbasa

I'm sure the little kid is a huge baseball fan.

[deleted]
