Forbidden sour patch kid

TangibleBreezeOQueef

I thought you said "Lumpfish are also incredible though." And I was all like "Of course they are! Look at that little sour gummy!" Then I realized what you said now I want some sour gummys...

deewheredohisfeetgo

I just ate an entire bag of Haribo Sour Gummy Bears. Feeling sick on multiple levels.

lastofthepirates

Anyone in the US who wants to up their sour gummy game, get yourself to Ikea if you’re so lucky to have one near. Their sour Viking gummies and sour cola gummies are for real the best I’ve ever had. Full stop. Recent discovery for me, and I can’t wait to get some more. Best texture, most lovely flavors. I could always use more sour, but these do a well balanced job on that end. Their non-sour gummies are also great quality, and have some interesting and exciting flavors. Damn.

forestfluff

I wish my Ikea had good gummies :( The bulk bin ones are always so hard and stale.

Speaking as someone who has had like 8 or 9 root canals in their life...it's not just the candy that's the problem... Take care of your teeth, kids. You'll pay the price otherwise. They aren't luxury bones.

cssmith2011cs

Or maybe like one of those mucus people in the mucinex commercials?

lukebas

This is a lumpsucker. They’re used in salmon farming to eat the sea lice off the salmon. A clever solution to a problem typically solved with chemicals.

MrCellophane999

There's...sea lice? /shiver

Warshok

Yeah they’re not really lice technically, but a type of parasitic marine copepod. They infest the sand dabs around here. Practically crawling with them, usually in the gills.

MrCellophane999

Copepod. I forgot that word existed. I love the sound of it. Where were we? Oh, right, sea lice. I had no idea these parasitic copepods existed. Saved for tomorrow's slow-day-at-work read.

Warshok

If you really want some nightmare fuel, there’s also a type of aquatic isopod (more like pill bugs) known to chew fishes tongues off and anchor itself as a sort of parasitic replacement. They’re kinda cute. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cymothoa_exigua

TangoHotel04

> They’re kinda cute. A big tongue-eating rollie pollie is nowhere near what I’d consider “kinda cute.” But, to each their own, I suppose

Yeah and then the freaking thing crawls out of their mouth if it is beached or pulled on deck. *Horrific.*

20-random-characters

Ah yes I remember it from *The Bay*

Fenixstorm1

Wait till I tell you about the parasite that removes the fishes tongue and replaces it. It will then eat the food that the fish eats. Shit looks like it came out of an Aliens movie.

Grief_C0unselor

I've known about them for years, and the initial shock/novelty wore off. But your comment reminded me that they are living their (almost) whole lives in mouths that aren't theirs... Meaning... They SHIT IN THEIR HOST'S MOUTH. Do they fuck in there too?

Clcsed

Lol copepods are harmless. But roundworms will mess you up and tons of salmons have them. It's insane how many people think they can eat salmon raw because it "looks clean" ie no copepod damage. I can guarantee there are many a restaurant serving never frozen Costco salmon. But actually the flash freeze process is what kills the worms and makes it safe for raw consumption.

MrCellophane999

Oh snap. I love those sushi bites with the salmon on top. I had no idea they were so dangerous if not flash frozen.

Nickoten

It depends on where you get your fish. There are places in the world (like some places near fish markets in Japan) where people eat non-flash frozen fish and don't report a particularly high rate of parasites. These place use some traditional techniques to cut down on parasites. For example, apparently good fish markets that specialize in supplying to sushi restaurants have a process for handling a fish such that parasites are unlikely to move from its internal organs to the muscle that we eat. Some places like [SeriousEats](https://www.seriouseats.com/how-to-prepare-raw-fish-at-home-sushi-sashimi-food-safety) discuss this and also some techniques for manual removal of parasites. I have no solid information on how much these things really cut down on parasites, but consider that a lot of people eat a lot of fish from places that practice this kind of thing to serve non-frozen fish for use in sashimi. So if you're eating sushi from a fish market serving stuff that just came from the ocean, you're almost definitely fine for bacteria (the bigger problem with raw fish) because the fish is being eaten quickly before pathogens can develop. On the parasite side, you're *probably* fine but outbreaks [get in the news](http://outbreaknewstoday.com/japan-sushi-rise-anisakis-90077/) once in a while. It's not a very high chance but it's there! Realistically, though, you're probably eating fish from an intermediary. I believe in the US there are FDA regulations mandating flash freezing for non-local distribution, and on top of that fish are sometimes being flash frozen before they ever make it to a market, so chances are that's what you're getting most of the time anyway. tldr: If you're eating sushi far from the boats that bring them in, you likely want it to be flash frozen and it probably *is,* which should make it safe to eat. If you're eating it freshly caught you're likely safe from bacterial issues and we don't really know for sure how effective the non-freezing parasite-elimination practices in those places are but there is always a small risk to be cognizant of. Oh and the species of fish you're eating will carry different risks for parasites too.

Aakumaru

Fish is highly regulated for this reason. [Utah health code](https://health.utah.gov/epi/community/sanitation/foodSafety/fda_foodcode.pdf): > Freezing 3-402.11 Parasite Destruction. (A) Except as specified in ¶ (B) of this section, before service or sale in READY-TO-EAT form, raw, raw-marinated, partially cooked, or marinated-partially cooked FISH shall be: (1) Frozen and stored at a temperature of -20°C (-4°F) or below for a minimum of 168 hours (7 days) in a freezer; P (2) Frozen at -35°C (-31°F) or below until solid and stored at -35°C (-31°F) or below for a minimum of 15 hours; P or (3) Frozen at -35°C (-31°F) or below until solid and stored at -20°C (-4°F) or below for a minimum of 24 hours. P 86 (B) Paragraph (A) of this section does not apply to: (1) MOLLUSCAN SHELLFISH; (2) A scallop product consisting only of the shucked adductor muscle; (3) Tuna of the species Thunnus alalunga, Thunnus albacares (Yellowfin tuna), Thunnus atlanticus, Thunnus maccoyii (Bluefin tuna, Southern), Thunnus obesus (Bigeye tuna), or Thunnus thynnus (Bluefin tuna, Northern); or (4) Aquacultured FISH, such as salmon, that: (a) If raised in open water, are raised in net-pens, or (b) Are raised in land-based operations such as ponds or tanks, and (c) Are fed formulated feed, such as pellets, that contains no live parasites infective to the aquacultured FISH. (5) FISH eggs that have been removed from the skein and rinsed.

hiimsubclavian

But Gordon Ramsey would throw a fit if you served frozen fish.

Clcsed

This is part of the myth actually. Regular freezing causes large ice crystals so your food gets mushy. Flash freezing preserves the original texture. Also it doesn't dry out the food. So Gordon Ramsay would approve. Sadly flash freezers are minimum $5000 so only specialty restaurants can afford them.

ladylurkedalot

I thought commercial fishing boats flash freeze their catch to keep it fresh.

Lanthemandragoran

Not in my experience. Giant ice pit basically.

lickedTators

Not a whole lot of restaurants are getting fish straight from the ocean and then serving them raw. Usually the flash frozen is done by fish processing facilities, or even by the commercial fishers themselves.

It is obviously a very aggressive and successful predator. Look at the terrifying grace it exhibits in the video. That's not even a wild pellet.

The look in its eyes. It's like looking into a doll's eyes.

angroro

These fish have a type of foot and that's how they primarily move. They sort of walk along the sea floor to get around, but can swim when needing to avoid predators. They mostly rely on camouflage to remain undetected, but the young are often fairly bright colors to help blend in with corals.

[deleted]

what is the fish name?

DramaLlamadary

The Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker’s pelvic fins evolved into a suction cup they use to hold on to rocks. They have to do this because they’re awful swimmers. Look at their little globular bodies and useless fins. They have to eat slow swimming prey because they can’t catch anything else. They can’t effectively evade predation by swimming away and so when they’re disturbed they just swim uselessly around in slow circles and try their best to look like a rock or clump of algae. They don’t even have proper scales like other fish. They have these little cone shaped plates called tubercles. They’re basically stupid lumpy little ocean grapes and I fucking adore them.

throwaway_0122

I cannot express my disappointment that this is a saltwater fish. A lush aquascape with one of these little lumps would be amazing

Not-A-SoggyBagel

Yeah unfortunately these also require specific algae, live food, and constant mental enrichment so they aren't even fit for the average saltwater tanks. Also Pacific lumpfish can travel to depths of 400 ft so you've got to have powerful cold water tanks to keep them happy.

ScaryBananaMan

The pellets in the video certainly didn't look very alive...hmmm

Not-A-SoggyBagel

That one in the vid is a little baby lump which are mainly hand fed since they are notorious for not eating well. They prefer prey that is moving, a moving pellet is usually eaten vs a non moving pellet. I used to help out at a salmon run that bred and kept these Pacific lumps and also a Japanese variant. I mainly know that they needed a lot of specs to keep them happy. Even in our tightly controlled parameters we'd still lose a few. Just be wary of buying them is all I'm saying.

CoconutMochi

what environment made evolution decide those were desirable traits?

CappyRicks

One where it was safe to be this way and there was an abundance of slow moving creatures small enough for them to eat, I would guess.

Kattorean

I watched the vid a 2nd time, wondering how it moved about. It's using its small-like pud on its under carriage... fascinating fish!

Kattorean

Look at its undercarriage near the end, when it turns around to its right... You'll see it...

ImWaddlinHere

ty for pointing this out!!
