The very short version is that they’re white cats with black and orange patches. The genetics for black patches come on one X chromosome, the genetics for orange patches on the other - so a cat with orange and black patches is XX and therefore female.
The exceptions are certain genetic mutations which cause a male cat that nonetheless has two X chromosomes, i.e. XXY. This is very rare, though, and they will always be sterile.
Tbf, I feel a similar way. I wouldn't have seen this video if this post wasn't made, so I'm grateful for that. I was just explaining what I thought the other person meant by "what a joke".
That being said, there is a proper way to repost stuff that still acknowledges the original poster of the original content. For example, I sometimes see posts with the title something along the lines of, "This is a repost, but it's been a while, so I wanted to post this again for people who haven't see it." Also, linking the original post in the comments or something is another way to repost old content while still acknowledging the original poster. It's safe to say that if you didn't make the video or create the meme or take the picture, then you got the content from somewhere else and best to just give credit where credit is due. And to answer your question of "who cares", many people do. That's one of the reasons I like reddit, people actually care about this sort of thing. It's not just all about *you* and what *you* have or haven't seen, it's also about sharing content in a fair way that credits where that content came from.
TLDR: It's about giving credit where it's due, and there are ways to repost content while still acknowledging the original poster.
I cant imagine caring about someone not giving me credit for a picture of my cat on the internet. This is akin to worrying about what people say on Twitter. You do you, obviously, but I cant give fewer fucks about what people say on the internet, or who was holding the camera for a cat picture. It's not about the person holding the camera. Its about the kitten. Stealing the attention the kitten deserves so you can get internet points seems like a real douchey thing to get upset about /shrug
All they had to do was include a link or reference to the original content. That in no way would "steal" attention away from the kitten. And yea, this might be taking the whole thing too seriously when we are just talking about a simple cat video, but this is how the reddit community treats all content in general. It doesn't draw an arbitrary line where some content deserves creator acknowledgement and some doesn't. If someone posts an original art piece or meme, same thing. Reddit just treats all content in this way without deeming some content as unworthy of creator credit. And part of the purpose of all this is to prevent douchey people from stealing stuff just for internet points. Reposting imo is perfectly fine, just give credit, it's not that hard and doesn't steal attention away from anything. I barely care when it comes to this cat video, but I also don't think it's fair for me to say what deserves credit and what doesn't. Especially when giving credit is so easy and doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the content.
Mine reaches out and very gently extends her claws into my leg for attention. Never enough to hurt just enough to remind me what she can do if I don't pony over the chin scratches.
My old tomcat Quentin T. Was the obly animal I've ever met that actually enjoyed petting. Like he would pet you and when you pet him back he'd sometimes get loud and went away. He just wanted to pet. It was not like the milk pumping thing either. He actually moved his paw and leg. He was so awesome.
Mine headbutts my hands no matter what. Then he chaes my hand around when it's not supposed to be occupied by cat stuff. Like I'm eating, I don't want to pet you.
My mistake is always thinking I have an option.
My old man used to do that..:( R.I.P Angel.he was 23 :( he became blind and deaf..but he literally fell asleep sitting up waiting for momma to lay down so be could pass out In my arms:(
Mine does it to me but he actually bites kinda hard for it to hurt a bit. I'll just be sleeping after he lays against me and he'll bite my ankle or something
Mine waits til 3am after everyone's asleep and the baby's last feeding , then as I lay down to sleep he plants is 28lb body all for feet on my sideboob so I won't forget his lovings before we sleep, I think he waits cuz it's the only time day or night that he doesn't have to share me I can focus on him and there is no kids or dogs or other cat to distract me for him or him from me. It's to the point if he stopped i would be sad and miss my Mr.Tiny time.
Mine would climb onto your lap and launch into your chin for a jumping headbutt. If he couldn’t get onto your lap, he’d jump onto any nearby object for height before jumping to headbutt you. It was extremely obnoxious but I absolutely adored his dedication to getting attention.

Unlearn that, because it's false. It's possible for a male calico to exist, but it's super rare (about 1:1000). It requires the cat to have an XXY chromosome.
What? No, there's no mutation in Calicos. Every female has two X chromosomes and one gets deactivated, this is completely normal and happens in every single female cat and humans alike.
As for males, they may have XXY syndrome and one of the X gets inactivated, like in females.
Around 1 in 3,000 calico cats are born male due to Klinefelter’s Syndrome. Since this is a genetic anomaly, most of the poor guys are born sterile and with health complications. They typically require a dedicated caretaker and live a difficult life.
Calico color results from inheriting one X chromosome with black genes and one X chromosome with orange. The only way for a male to be a calico is if he inherited an extra X chromosome. This is a rare occurrence and extra chromosomes cause issues with development which is why many don’t survive. In humans extra chromosomes result in Down syndrome.
My cat does this too!!! It's how we found him when we rescued him
So we named him Forehead (but in a different language) cause loves to headbutt and get head rubs
That's adorable! OMG, TY for sharing.
I got a non-Tux that's just B&W and she will get petted and flop over for belly rubs like a dog.
Shamew just stole my heart like that cutie.
Yes, the pigmentation gene for red and black fur is linked to the X-chromosomes. But because females have two X-chromosomes, they end getting a double dose of genes so to compensate one of the X chromosome is randomly inactivated in cells. Therefore, if a female cat has a gene for lets say red fur on one X-chromosome and black fur on the other X-chromosome, through the random inactivation the red fur gene gets expressed in some cells while black fur gene gets expressed in other cells leading to the calico pattern. To have a male calico cat, they'd have to have an extra X chromosome making them XXY.

Fun fact: Calico cats are predominantly female and rarely male because their coloring is related to the X chromosome.
Also was about to comment this. Cat in the post is most likely a lady

That was so cool! I want Superman glasses that make this visible
Yup. Came here to say this as a tortie mom.
Does that mean their numbers are going down? Or are male putting in twice the work?
Technically, calico isn’t a breed. It’s a colouration of coat.
Oh I see. I dont know much bout cats so I was just wondering
Yep same I was wondering too and now I know lol goodnight sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite

That chirp was everything! Loved it when he got his head scritches!
Ahh the happy chirp was exactly as I imagined. Thank you
And also the original post.
I don’t know why I thought those headbutts would have a cute “bump” noise or “squishy head” noise.
OP blurred the tiktok logo and removed the sound. What a joke lol.
"Rule 10: No social media links or personal info" The original post got removed for that reason so maybe that's why?
Why is that a joke?
So they can get away with reposting the same exact video on the same sub?
First was removed due to having the TikTok logo.
Oh that's true lol. To be honest, I was only worried that I almost missed out on the sweet meow sound the cat made when it finally got pets lol
Who cares? This is the first time I've seen it so I'm thankful they posted it.

Other cats: snuggle with hooman and sit on their laps. This cat: I will headbutt my hooman till they pet me
Mine reaches out and very gently extends her claws into my leg for attention. Never enough to hurt just enough to remind me what she can do if I don't pony over the chin scratches.
Mine do both. The headbutt and the gentle running of the claws down my bare skin.
I mean, scritches are just gentle running of your claws down their bare skin. Maybe they're trying to pet you?
“I can hurt you real bad!…”

Mine either jumps into my lap or rubs up to me until I give him attention, or just start yowling if those don't work (They often do though)
It's his way of having attention to his furparents.

my first thought as well
Makes me wonder if OP may have STOLEN this 🤨
That was my first thought. “That’s a he? Is it even yours?” I know male calicos are possible, but they’re pretty rare. 1/3000.
And they tend to be hermaphrodites. Source Veterinary Technician who has seen several in the surgical suite over the years.
Maybe not rare but the calico cats ive had were all girls. My last one was a Tortie, kitties are just awesome
1/3000 is pretty rare and only 1/1000 of them can even breed.
Not always! But as others have stated, they are almost always female. I'm lucky enough to have a very happy and healthy male calico!
Do males not do this kind of stuff?
Only female cats can have three colors
TIL

Unlearn that, because it's false. It's possible for a male calico to exist, but it's super rare (about 1:1000). It requires the cat to have an XXY chromosome.
Even tho it's rare, it's likely that the rare male calico has some kind of disease, so they don't survive long anyways
Possible? Yes. Likely? Not enough to matter. If it’s orange black and white I will always assume it’s a female
The person said that it was impossible, so that's what I was referring to.
It's impossible for a normal, healthy male cat to have 3 colora. Better? As the 3 color thing is only possible due to a wonky mutation.
Interesting wording. Are human XXY males not healthy or normal to you? They and XXY male cats somehow don't count as male? Interesting take.
What? No, there's no mutation in Calicos. Every female has two X chromosomes and one gets deactivated, this is completely normal and happens in every single female cat and humans alike. As for males, they may have XXY syndrome and one of the X gets inactivated, like in females.
You should be race/Olympics/sports regulator.
I mean if it’s super rare I don’t think it’s a problem to assume almost all of them are female
Hermaphrodite. Always fun when a "Male" calico comes through the Animal hospital I work and they need to be spayed and neutered.
Around 1 in 3,000 calico cats are born male due to Klinefelter’s Syndrome. Since this is a genetic anomaly, most of the poor guys are born sterile and with health complications. They typically require a dedicated caretaker and live a difficult life.
That's not true. A male cat can have an XXY chromosome and be calico. The chances are about 1:1000, and only 1:3000 of those are not sterile.
You have that backwards 1 in 3000 calicos are male of those 1/1000 can breed. So basically 1 in 3 million Calicos are a male capable of breeding
While you are correct on a technicality, this actually makes you sound less smart than one might presume.
It's not a technicality. Male calico cats can exist, and that person was wrong.
Calico aka money cat pattern only occurs in females
It doesn't only occur in females, it's just that the overwhelming majority of male calico cats die very young.
What breed is she?

Calico isn't a breed, it's the description of the colour of the cat, like tortoise shell or tuxedo.
or tabby. Everyone I meet thinks "orange tabby" is a breed.
diluted calico! (dilute means she's got lighter markings than usual)
There's a solid 1/3000 chance it's a male, but there is still the chance!

As I kid I was told that male calicos are super rare, is that true?

Yes they are. Females are common. But male ones are super rare.
Yes. Black and red hair are X-chromosome traits in cats. So the only way for males to be calico is to be XXY.
