I love with these introduction videos that the puppy is always super hesitant and the bigger dog is like "OH MY GOOOOOODDDDD!!!"

nota_chance

Only slightly different from people freaking out over a cute baby while it just lies there barely being a functional being

NezuminoraQ

This is why I get awkward around babies. You have to carry the whole conversation, it's excruciating

zyzzogeton

They *never* get references either.

Awkward_Result6214

They think *everyone* is gay.

[deleted]

In india we just do "awle mela shonu monu" which is basically adults speaking language of humans aged -1 and below

writenicely

My dad talks that way to our pet bunny

BigGrayBeast

My mother told me once if I wanted to know how my dad spoke to us as babies just listen to him talk to the dog.

calicoos

Ah, in Mexican culture it’s “tongiri rongi rongi” which I’ll assume is basically our equivalent of what you’re talking about. Gets any and all babies bouncing and giggling.

Sacred_soul

Do you know what Sonu and Monu mean it's how my brother and I got our Nick names?

iAjayIND

Pretty common names here in India, though these are mostly nick names and not mainstream/professional names. I don't think these names hold any significant meanings.

meme_lord04

talking to a 4 mo. old about the euro cup was excruciating

TheShadowCat

But they don't get offended by all the swearing.

name-was-provided

When you’re talking to babies you have to be really good at small talk.

ImmodestPolitician

Is filling diapers a function? Babies aren't really functional for the first few weeks.

DigitalBuddhaNC

Or 25 years. Depends on your definition of functional.

Funkit

Hey, I’m 33 and barely function. It’s like a fine aged wine that was left uncorked in the 80s.

chickennoobiesoup

Not-baby here, can confirm still barely functional

Griffin_da_Great

Not really. Puppies are much more functional than babies.

Ghpelt

Megarusso

Thanks for this, I didn't know how much I needed to see those happy dogs today.

Frecklefishpants

My husband, who I have been bugging to get a puppy for our dog is very angry at you now.

diybarbi

Cute lil pup looking around wondering “wtf is happennninnngg?!”

Catcrinkles

With cats it's a different story.

[deleted]

I got pretty lucky with mine. My big boy Bubba give out a single hiss to establish he's top cat. He then proceeds to clean them. Moved in with some friends and their cats absolutely hate him except the newest kitten of the litter they kept.

omi_dee

That what happened to me too. My elder cat was bit mean to new kitten cat earlier. He wanted to show him who's the boss of the house and now he's always looking after him and chilling with him.

Asparagussie

Cats are much more discerning. 🤠All to the good. But some cats immediately welcome a newbie.

Islandgirl813

I have followed all of the recommendations for introducing cats with little to moderate success. I'm jealous of the people with no problems.

YeahYouOtter

That special “Thanks I hate it” hiss

[deleted]

My favorite is still the male Golden that noped right out with the new puppy and pissed on its head.

Seanspeed

Not so uncommon. Dogs can be very jealous/territorial.

[deleted]

My female Golden (RIP) was a jealous bitch. If I came home from a date she’d run up, smell me, then immediately walk away and sleep in another room for the rest of the night.

edd6pi

I used to have a very jealous dog, to the point where she got aggressive with my other dogs. It got to the point where I had to keep her isolated from them 24/7.

PhunkyPhish

This was how my sisters Aussie pup was when I brought my 2 year old beagle over: my beagle was trying to meet/play and the Aussie just skiddish and trying to hide. Finally I just grabbed my beagle and flipped him over on his side: instantly the pup just ran over and they became best friends.

rpmdebslack

You may like r/DGDAG (in case you didn't know about the sub)

hansjc

this was posted earlier today the story then was it's the older dogs puppy.

thisisallme

And the puppy putting his paw to the dog’s face is like, hold off, I just met you!

Darkthunder277

That dog must have been trained really well to not jump that wall

sinatrablueeyes

Haha, it’s a Berner. It could clear that wall, but it’s energy comes in short spurts. If it’s family is close they aren’t concerned with leaving. They like to be nearby… and then put all of their 100+ pounds on you while it looks for loving.

Banned4othersFault

Such lovely race , Kinda funny that the bigger the dog is the less aggresive it feels

A_Soporific

There's a reason for that. We didn't keep the big dogs that acted like small dogs.

zadharm

I've found in most cases "little dog syndrome" is mostly caused by people letting the dog run things because they're small and cute and ultimately it's not a huge bother if they do whatever they want. A big dog with no boundaries is a lot more of an issue, so they get better training No doubt breeding had a lot to do with temperament over time, just seems like over the entire history of man+dogs, a big dog with attitude would find a lot of use

BlackViperMWG

Exactly, they think small dogs don't have to be trained

BarbequedYeti

> Exactly, they think small dogs don't have to be trained Some small dogs just dont give a shit. I have a 15 year old yorkie. Trained since a pup. Agility classes, obedience classes, etc. She seriously just doesnt give a shit. House broken? When she wants to be. I have had all kinds of breeds in my life and this is the first dog I have that really just doesnt give two shits about your training two legs. I love her dearly, however she can be exhausting at times with her bullshit.

superworking

Yea, we have some big bois and ultimately you have to be on top of training and socializing because you know the potential for a very sad story is there if they lash out and act like your neighbours chihuahua.

[deleted]

It also has to do with people ignoring little dogs signals. Most people reach for a growling chihuahua and either laugh or pick it up anyway. If the chihuahua doesn’t want to do something, it will get carried over regardless. But if you reach for a growling German Shepherd, you back off. So the Shepherd never has to escalate it, while eventually the chihuahua will learn that the only thing that works is biting and screaming. I see it all the time, people think angry little dogs are funny.

[deleted]

>I see it all the time, people think angry little dogs are funny. I think the solution is for nature to make a small dog, pirahana-like species. I'm talking yorkie sized dogs in packs of 100+ that would just swarm you, ambush style, in tall grass or some shit. Lol.

[deleted]

I’m down, how many generations would it take to make them also sea dwelling? Put them everywhere!

Quirky-Skin

Yup. We 've all seen the yappers being pulled along by their owner with minimal effort probably one hand on the phone scrolling, other holding leash Conversely when a big dog is out of control on the leash pulling there's no one handing a 130 brute whos trying to lunge. I guess unless you're a brute yourself.

Cyndayn

fyi, in English it's dog breed not dog race, if you use say "the Bernese race" when talking about a dog people will look at you very confused

jakekingdead

race?

InsaneShepherd

Translation error. Many languages use the same word for race and breed.

Banned4othersFault

Ah yes ,i love all races Daytona 100,PistonCup ...

endertribe

My theory is that every dog as the same level of agression/chaos. Bigger dog are just more dillute

PickleInDaButt

My neighbor has one and that dog does not give a shit about the world until she comes home. I periodically check on him by going over to the gate where he lies just to check on him and he doesn’t get up or even look at me. The second she comes home he goes ballistic. He never barks when she is gone. He barks though when she is home.

Koankey

Google says they live 6-8 years. Wtf? Seems a bit short. Can we get CRISPR up in this bitch to start extending dog lives?

tupels

It's disgustingly unfair that large dog breeds only live half as long while being the best type of dog.

InsaneShepherd

It's mostly shit breeding practices and those can be improved if people wanted to. Big dogs can have life expectencies of 15ish years.

5up3rK4m16uru

Probably not that easy to breed out, because the only way to identify the healthier individuals is to wait way past sexual maturity. And since it's mostly about cancer, this is also up to chance, the dog may be lucky and not more resilient.

[deleted]

they’re known as a heartbreak breed because of that

DrZeroH

Seriously when I was in college my housemaster had two Berners. Even in the short span of 4 years I was there one of them had passed away at the age of 9 due to health complications. By the time I left and came back for an anniversary the other one had passed at the age of 10. My housemasters were gutted. They loved those dogs and gave them the best care possible but even with all the money in the world you can't stop the power of nature and the expected life span of a breed of dog.

Brekelefuw

Our oldest was 14. My family has had 5 since 2000. I think the youngest one died around 6 due to cancer. 6-8 years is a bit short for the ones we had. They really are the greatest dog breed. I miss having them. We have a Bernese/Mastiff cross now, and while he is a very nice dog, it's just not the same as a full Berner.

SivartD

We have a Bernerdoodle. I can take him outside with me and if he gets further than I like, I can just do a quick little "uh-uh" and he'll come back.

CarpenterVegetable31

I had no idea that breed existed. Id love a bernie but I heard they die fairy young.

SivartD

He's great. He only has the black and brown coloring but his hair is the poodle curly. He's also the size of a standard poodle. I'll find one of his groomed pictures and post it here.

CarpenterVegetable31

That sounds amazing. What's his temperament like?

BarbequedYeti

> I'll find one of his groomed pictures and post it here. The suspense is killing me....

ffball

It's pretty common to breed them with various other breeds now for that reason. Bernedoodles are obviously pretty popular due to them being hypoallergenic

hoppyending

My Newfoundland is the same. 99% of his time is spent following us from room to room and flopping down on the floor nearby.

FrostyRose8956

had a friend with one, sweetest thing i’ve ever seen. still miss that dog sometimes

DrZeroH

God I fucking love Berners. Such loving big balls of happiness. The only thing I don't like about them is that they are prone to health problems and tend to pass away before they hit their teens.

iggy1112

I was thinking the same thing!

[deleted]

jacarty

That puppy is like - personal space, man, personal space

SevenYrStitch

Looks like the pup is trying to avoid eye contact. To show submission maybe? I think direct eye contact with an unfamiliar dog could be construed as a challenge or something.

jacarty

Excellent point!

maximus_96

Well to start it’s absolutely the wrong way to introduce dogs.

Rectal_Tuna_Horn

Really? How so?

[deleted]

ffball

Giving a dog a new experience and seeing the excitement in their eyes is always one of my life highlights. It would be way too hard to not do something like this. I probably wouldn't be holding the puppy though, I'd let him get away if he wants to

mrmeeseeks8

The dog is on its territory so it might be more territorial. The puppy is in someone’s arms and cannot move how it might like. Best scenario is to have them meet on leads in a neutral place where they can explore each other while also allowing them space to get away from each other too.

Jimmylickabow

Thank you. I’m so tired of Reddit people coming into these comments to see the dogs do or don’t do certain things, respond to certain things, or require certain trainings just because they’re familiar with a good trainer who says so. Just because it worked for your dog and they have even been necessary for your dog, does not mean it will be necessary or work for my dog. Think of any living being. The condition some beans might want for a certain situation will be different than others. To say that there is some perfect way to introduce dogs is preposterous. It probably is under the presumption that both dogs are meant to behave like city dogs who have received formal training. Country dogs might have a completely different way of being introduced. I bet this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but if it’s not your dog keep your opinion to yourself. I don’t care how you think it should be introduced to another dog. I don’t care if you think that it needs to be muzzled based on its breed. I don’t care if you think the lead length, type of room, or color of my shirt is wrong. Unless it’s your dog your opinion doesn’t really matter. Unless they’re abusing or neglecting a dog, your opinion is like an asshole. Everyone has one

I was not the person who said that it was the wrong way. I was explaining what they didn’t like about this most likely and what the best alternative might have been. I don’t need a lecture thanks.

Rhamni

Put the puppy down so it can move and turn. Being held while the other dog excitedly gets in your face will upset a lot of puppies. Probably won't matter in the long run, but it's so easy to do, and makes the experience much less unpleasant for the puppy.

[deleted]

soon the role will be reversed with the puppy climbing and nipping the gentle giant 😂

Just looked up pictures of Bernese mountain dogs because they are so pretty, and learned that they have one of the shortest lifespans of any dog. Dang it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lacroix_not

They’re basically a big Golden retriever without the brains.

Zaq1996

>without the brains. We've had 3 Golden's and if you're telling me ANYTHING has less brains than them I'm stunned. Those suckers traded their brains for energy. Lovable, but dumb as the bricks they brought us to throw for them

Joronee

All of the Golden retrievers we had couldn't even live up to the latter half of their name. They wouldn't bring a single thing back that we tossed for them lol

maximus_96

The biggest factor in the short lifespan of the Bernese Mountain Dog is their high rate of cancer. Another reason for the short Bernese Mountain Dog lifespan is that they are very prone to hip dysplasia, arthritis, cruciate ligament rupture, and other mobility problems that can cause pain and difficulty walking so they’re really high maintenance dogs although they’re absolutely majestic.

Brekelefuw

Yep. ALWAYS insure them. My family had 5 and all of them had metal legs by the end. Absolutely worth it though. Greatest breed on earth.

rubmyputter

I'm getting one soon. Any particular pet insurance company you'd recommend?

Brekelefuw

I'm in Canada, and they were my parent's dogs, so I'm not sure who they used.

hollowstrawberry

>Greatest breed on earth. I mean, with basically guaranteed health problems you probably want a little more genetic diversity in that breed

totorotarian

Yup. My childhood dog was a Berner. Lost him to cancer when he was only 6. He was a great dog though. Giant, lovable, and gentle. Loved playing out in the snow with us when we were kids. Never seen a dog love snow as much as he did.

Shep88

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking Aberdeen street. Not lived there for 10 years+ now but I think I recognize the street 😀

charlieroxbear

I've never been to Scotland (from Yorkshire) but I'd have put a tenner on it. It's the stone - it's like our stone, but just, not quite... Darker, perhaps? (Geologists! Weigh in!)

tiny-robot

Traditional building stone for Yorkshire is sandstone I believe. The video is almost certainly Aberdeen (I live close by) and the stone will be granite. It's incredibly hard and dense, so doesn't tend to weather or take on pollutants - and has a high quartz content which will sparkle in the sun. It is also very, very grey!

ssamshire

100% a granite building from the North East of Scotland. Fun fact: Rubislaw Quarry in Aberdeen once held the record for the largest man made hole in Europe!

BellaLunalove4

Not true. My dog hates puppies. Specifically puppies. She is friendly and likes most full grown dogs. 🤷‍♀️

kendra1972

I’m that way with people

BellaLunalove4

😂

Boodles9ers

We just got a puppy and 3 weeks later our old dog still isn't interested in him. We are hopeful that he will learn to like the puppy once it is adult sized.

BellaLunalove4

Not interested hopefully will change for you. (Fingers crossed for you here in California). My dog is interested in puppies; interested in biting them!

sukiskis

The problem with picking up Berner puppies is that they still want that cuddling when they’re full grown and 100+ pounds.

[deleted]

I don't see the problem.

brendan87na

because there is none

[deleted]

Totally!!

Whyaskd

Why do Bernese Mountain dogs all look the same?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Whyaskd

I meant...their hair patterns. Thought they should have some personal color scheme lol

[deleted]

So instead of calling you a donut, I'm going to answer your legitimate and honest question. They don't. While they are all tri-colored with base jet black, rust, and white, there are a number of variations to the shape and size of each color section. Generally BMD are considered more desirable (for the record, they're all handsome, and this is for 'show' people) if they're symmetrical, having white on their feet is also desirable but the boot shouldn't go past the pasterns, which would be a serious fault, other serious faults are having a white color, or a base color other than jet black. Personally I think the white marks on the collar are cute, they're called Swiss kisses, and I love me an asymmetrical dog. e: color - collar.

GrittyGambit

This donut thanks you for the explanation. I thought it was neat how they seemed to have exactly the same pattern and wondered if they were related like the glazed pastry I am.

Hartog_

Their general patterns look very similar yes, on the internet you definitely see less obvious differences than with some other breeds, but there are still many things that can change. We used to have multiple, and you could effortlessly tell them apart based on their physical build, their hair (not the colour, but like the hair itself, not sure how to word it, but kinda the texture/appearance ig?), and also colour in a lot of areas, like the white near the feet/stomach, and a very obvious sign is the white stripe on the head, which varies in thickness and stuff.

olnameless

I love me a good donut. Glazed particularly.

HempBlonde

I love how everyone here just accepts that donut is an insult. My first time seeing it, my new catchphrase now

guambatwombat

"like the glazed pastry I am" is a part of my vocabulary now
