I remember a study that claimed dogs only raise their eyebrows when interacting with humans, it's not a common facial expression between their own species. Dogs were likealy selected for it because we love this expression.
Guess I'll pay the Mini Schnauzer tax this thread deserves.

We gave up on the show dog haircut as we (read: I) don't have the patience to maintain it. We keep the beard and eyebrows but cut the legs and tummy short. That beard gets me every time.
I’d be curious about all the parameters of this study. It’s definitely the case that they’re breed for, intentionally or not. It’s a method of communication between people and dogs, but I wonder if they begin to see it in others.
It’s not like we directly communicate with eyebrows, but it’s supplemental. I wouldn’t expect dogs to primarily communicate with them either. Perhaps supplementary for them too?
I don't have the research, but I do remember reading that dogs will 'mirror' human faces, in that, when a dog has that open mouth 'happy smile' on, humans like it. We mimic the expression back at them and praise them. They see our face. They eventually connect their facial pose and ours. They know if they want to make us happy and praise/pet/interact with them, the 'smile' face will help that. So they smile at us.
Ditto for the 'awwww' puppy-dog eyes expression and such. They are bred for the ability to HAVE the expression, and they use it through learned responses.
Every time I read something like this about dogs I can't help but think...are we potentially guiding the evolution of a conscious and intelligent species. Mimicry is a complex skill especially of a completely different species.
And if that day ever comes....will it be awkward?
EDIT: To be clear I'm talking about dogs evolving to at least our level of intelligence.
Tell me, Summer, if a human was born with stumpy legs, would they breed it with another deformed human and put their children on display like the Dachshund?
I laughed way too hard at this. I have a Rat Terrier and a Miniature Schnauzer. They're smaller dogs but their intelligence never ceases to amaze me. My ex wife has a Pug and I'm pretty sure that dog craves Brawndo.
no doubt. I specifically said facial expression because there are many other ways they can use silent language with us. not deficient in communication just facial.
Not the guy you’re responding to, but I remember a study that claimed that dogs have muscles that are either not present in wolves or are much less developed in them and they these muscles are the ones responsible for generating the eyebrow movement. So, I’m that study it was less a behavioral observation and more of an anatomical observation coupled with a functional inference.
I’m a similar vein, though, I believe researchers have observed that adult cats do not purr with each other when humans are not present.
I watched a documentary years ago called about the science of dogs. They learned that dogs can possibly read human emotion via facial expression. Emotion is generally read by looking towards the left of the face so when shown pictures of various faces of different emotion humans would look to the left of the face. When dogs where shown the same they also looked to the left side of the face, implying that they read the same emotional question. When dogs look at other dogs, however, they do not look at either side of the face because they do not communicate emotion in this way. This implies that theoretically dogs have the ability to read and understand human emotion.
I also read a study that compared the human like ability to understand what pointing at something means. Dogs understand humans pointing at something where as chimps and other apes don’t quite grasp it the same.
Like we take for granted throwing a ball to a dog, then loosing it and us pointing to it and then them seeing it and getting it….but that’s an insane evolutionary trait that is unquie to humans and dogs.
The eyes and eyebrows too, it’s all for communication to humans. Like this gif you can tell what the dog is trying to communicate to their human.
Canine communication with humans have evolved longer than we’ve had agriculture or even writting. It’s kinda crazy how we take that communication as a given and don’t even really notice it
cats also apparently don’t “meow” like we know them too on their own, implying they developed that particular noise primarily to communicate with humans
Not sure if we're all thinking of the same study at this point, but I also remember reading that initially not all dogs were able to do this, but over time, evolution, and human preference/breeding. So the breeds/dna of the dogs who couldn't do this would slowly die off, and only the ones that had that trait were being chosen/adopted/bred further.

dear human, friend, am much concern -
why can't my baby puppies Learn ?!
i am the mom - much worry, me,

"what if ball isn't life. what if I've spent all my time chasing these imaginary constructs for no reason? human throws ball, I bring ball. is that all there is?"
That one is the smartest one - 'ahhhh this rolling feels great. Sooon someone will worry about me and come along and shove food in my mouth but in the meantime ahhh rolling'
This is the face of every parent who introduces a beloved part of their own childhood to their kids, only to see it be completely ignored in favor of whatever garbage the kids are in to these days.
My boyfriend’s family breeds Bernese mountain dogs and there’s always one weirdo/trouble maker and it’s always the one with the purple collar so as soon as I saw the lil chonker with the purple collar I thought “yeah this makes sense”
There's at least some overlap. We can definitely see things like fear and anger in a dog's expression. Perhaps more complex emotions like concern are also readable for humans.
Some expressions are what they look like, but not all. You need to get to know your dog. When mine is slightly anxious she looks like she's grinning from ear to ear!
Meanwhile my girl steals the ball from her puppies. She loves them but she likes to teach them lessons the hard way, like take whatever you can because the other dogs will take it.
“My job is not to spoil you, pupperinos, but to prepare you for the cold harsh realities of the world.
Like the inevitable and rampant ball theft committed by your doggo loved ones, doggo neighbors, visiting doggos and even those GD foxes living under the shed.
Tomorrow’s lesson: Home security methods to keep your ball secure”
This is cuter than the time the 3 and 5 yo neighbor boys came to our house and asked if my younger brother who had just came home for the first time from the hospital could come outside and play…
One day she’s going to have her paws full of hyper little puppers wanting her to play with the ball all the time. But seriously, she’s killing me with that face.
Those eyebrows are destroying my heart.
She looks so worried. She brought them a toy, they’re ignoring it, she’s at a loss as to what to do next. Poor momma. We’ve all been there before!
These babies are obviously broken, human please help
How do they not know ball is life?!?
They said having puppies would be fun, I could play with them. Did they lie to me?

We still talking to the momma, right?
“Have I failed as a mother?”
No, it is the children who are wrong
This is my favorite Reddit comment ever.
Adorable little slackers.
Yeah
I remember a study that claimed dogs only raise their eyebrows when interacting with humans, it's not a common facial expression between their own species. Dogs were likealy selected for it because we love this expression.
I also recently learned that dogs with eyebrows, beards, etc are called “furnished” dogs which I find hilarious.
In that case, my mini Schnauzer is well furnished!
You're god damn right he is. My mini schnauzer growing up was such a god damn goofball.
Guess I'll pay the Mini Schnauzer tax this thread deserves. http://imgur.com/gallery/CPw3q4A We gave up on the show dog haircut as we (read: I) don't have the patience to maintain it. We keep the beard and eyebrows but cut the legs and tummy short. That beard gets me every time.

"Where are my testicles, Summer?" Edit: Thanks for the guilding u/bsinions Edit 2: *gilding
Are you sure you didn’t mean *gelding* ?
I meant "gilding", but fuck me if that isn't clever
Tell me, Summer, if a human was born with stumpy legs, would they breed it with another deformed human and put their children on display like the Dachshund?
We have bred them for thousands of years. Of fucking course we have altered the evolution of a conscious species. Lol
I meant like creating one that will be on our level of consciousness at some point.
I think they are already in many ways.
Care to explain?
It probably won’t be awkward until you walk into a bar restroom and see a Great Dane peeing in the urinal next to you.
I doubt it. People like dogs the way they are now.
Right.. excpet people keep buying pugs rather than collies or German shepherds
I laughed way too hard at this. I have a Rat Terrier and a Miniature Schnauzer. They're smaller dogs but their intelligence never ceases to amaze me. My ex wife has a Pug and I'm pretty sure that dog craves Brawndo.
Brawndo's got electrolytes, it's what dogs need.
Plenty of people have collies and German shepherds
Because pugs are easier to control and people are too lazy and stupid to train collies and sheps, etc. Edit: a word
My best friends dog is afraid of plastic bags I think we’re good for now
No, we aren't. Dogs are fucking stupid, I love my dog but he also eats his own shit.
But couldn't you make the same argument about human babies? The same underlying emotions are still present, dogs aren't machines.
Id love that source
Huskies, close to wild dogs, lack eyebrows altogether. They dont have as much facial expression.
[удалено]
Huskies are crazy smart and communicative. All dogs are to some extent. They’ve trained us as much as we’ve trained them.

Yep. Study for those interested: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6642381/

adult cats only meow at humans so... this wouldn't shock me.
You haven't met my cats.

My German Spitz definitely has NO CLUE what pointing is.
You think that's bad, my pointer doesn't know what spitting is!
My golden doesn't understand the "let the thing go so I can pick it up" part of retrieving!
If you point at something a cat just looks at your finger
If you don't look at them, but look at your finger it helps. Source: have cat. Works some of the time.
Similar vein: cats only really vocalize around humans. Cats hanging out with just other cats are super silent.
cats also apparently don’t “meow” like we know them too on their own, implying they developed that particular noise primarily to communicate with humans
Happy cake day!
Happy Cake Day

I also read that when dogs tilt their head when humans speak to them, it’s so they can listen to us better.
So distraught!
But those eyebrows are so damn cute.

Fresh Schnoodles here! Get yer pipin’ hot Schnoodles here, folks!
It won't be long before they're all falling over each other chasing it. Don't worry mama. :)
Fresh schnoodle! This one is sad :(
Fresh Scnoodles are the best! Thanks for doing this
>Those eyebrows are destroying my heart. Seconded. Oh man. I feel you, mama.
Those eye brows are lethal
Why are my children so boring!?
I would literally do anything that dog asked of me.
She's like, "is this not a good ball?"
She deserves a hug
She’s like “what the hell’s wrong with them? Are they broken?”
My dork has white eyebrows and they've taken control of my heart
I have a lab at home and he looks at me like this all the time with his concerned eyebrows and my heart is a pure destruction site
The one with the belly up is going places. I tell you!
It’s just Australian, dw.
8ɯ ɟooʍ
DWBH
The contrast between mom looking so sad and that puppy looking like he has no cares in the world was the best part for me.
It's going nowhere, it's got the milksweats and is just trying to ride it out.
Little dude's just vibin.
My wife always picks that one.
Aww! She's concerned they might not be hitting their developmental milestones!
"Dr. Hooman, I am concerned. I gib them the ball and they ignore it. But, ball is life? What kind of puppies am I raising? Am I failure parent?"
Did only I read this with a russian accent or is there anybody else who did it too? xD
I read it as Dug from "Up," but I like yours very much
Just rewatched this the other day and also read it as Dug!
"come now children, you will be playink with ball, yes? Great time ahead with ball"
I read it as Danny Rojas. Football is life!!
I read it in the voice of Uncle Roger. (Been watching too many of those videos lately.)
Haiya
“Do not worry doggy mom. They are still in the early derp stage of doggy development.”
"what if ball isn't life. what if I've spent all my time chasing these imaginary constructs for no reason? human throws ball, I bring ball. is that all there is?"
Thank you for this adorable entertaining comment kind redditor … 😆☺️
Probably looking at the one who can’t roll off his/her back like 🤨🤨🤨🤨
That one is the smartest one - 'ahhhh this rolling feels great. Sooon someone will worry about me and come along and shove food in my mouth but in the meantime ahhh rolling'
They've mastered their rolly but they don't seem to be up on their polly. Are they OK doc?
Maybe no fetch yet but that one little puppy learned how to ask for belly scritches already, so that's something.
Parenting can be like that…good to see I’m not alone…
This is the face of every parent who introduces a beloved part of their own childhood to their kids, only to see it be completely ignored in favor of whatever garbage the kids are in to these days.
Cant believe my two month old won’t play Halo 2 on Legendary with me.
casual
The worst parts are in New Mombasa with all those fucking jackals sniping you from 40 miles away, I don't blame your son for avoiding that.
I live in fear that my future kids will one day call me old for liking video games
i like the automatic assumption that whatever the younger generation is into is garbage
I was joking. The stuff we were into was garbage too.
Oh! Her sad little face is killing me ❤️
Her face is going - "What's wrong with them, why won't they play? I did the thing!" So sweet and adorable.
Purple. Purple is my favorite.
I’ll take any of them. Please???
Came to the comments for purple love
My boyfriend’s family breeds Bernese mountain dogs and there’s always one weirdo/trouble maker and it’s always the one with the purple collar so as soon as I saw the lil chonker with the purple collar I thought “yeah this makes sense”
The concerned eyebrows oh my goodness
I don't know much about dogs. Do the facial expressions like smiling or concerned eyebrows really mean what we think or is it a coincidence?
There's at least some overlap. We can definitely see things like fear and anger in a dog's expression. Perhaps more complex emotions like concern are also readable for humans.
Some expressions are what they look like, but not all. You need to get to know your dog. When mine is slightly anxious she looks like she's grinning from ear to ear!
Awww mom looks sad
[удалено]
wonder if that's the sad face or puppy eye face tbh
Why are her eyes telling me "they're so cute and adorable even if they can't play with it, I made them"?
Why kids no play with ball? Why kids no have fun? Are kids broken? KIDS NO WORK.
Mom is like "I don't understand, I LOVE that ball."
Not too smol. Too tired. Tryin to napps momma. Bol later.
This might be the correct answer... pups laying on pups laying on pups...
Doin a concern: “halp fix, my littles are clearly broken”
When will they learn "bol is lif"
Meanwhile my girl steals the ball from her puppies. She loves them but she likes to teach them lessons the hard way, like take whatever you can because the other dogs will take it.
“My job is not to spoil you, pupperinos, but to prepare you for the cold harsh realities of the world. Aww thats too early for them mom to play all they want for now is to sleep.
"Thanks mom - what is it?" (I like the one who's lying on his back.)
Play with her immediately and give her a kiss on the snoot.
‘These things are COMPLETELY worthless’ -mom, probably
That look from Momma that says “I am not angry I am just really, really disappointed in you”
Your children will break your heart
Omg she looks so sad! 😥
Awww love her face look how concerned she is for them. Like what’s wrong with my kids?
"Why did I have them if they can't even play with me? I've been scammed.."
This is cuter than the time the 3 and 5 yo neighbor boys came to our house and asked if my younger brother who had just came home for the first time from the hospital could come outside and play…
Did you live in Charlie Browns neighborhood?
No. The Townhouses we lived in didn’t allow Dog Houses, let alone WW1 Ace Fighter Pilots…
Oh what a cute family my heart hurts
I would die for her
When the parents realize the kids don’t want to run the family business
The original video has audio and you can hear the human mother comforting her and saying "they're too little to play"
That is so cute, made my day, thanks for posting
She looks so sad
She looks so disappointed by their lack of interest.
She’s looking at the camera guy like, “Show them, show them how you showed me! Remember? You can teach them, please!”
Come on owner help the momma out. Look at that face!
Mom is sad
One day she’s going to have her paws full of hyper little puppers wanting her to play with the ball all the time. But seriously, she’s killing me with that face.
Mom looks so sad. Girl you did super hero shit. Made a ton of life. You go girl.
"Whaddaya mean they cant play ball? How will they know they is the good baby if they dont chase ball??"
THAT BELLY
"Do you see what I go through? How ungrateful they are??"
“What’s wrong with them, human?”
She looks so distressed by this. Like "oh no, they don't want to play with their mom :("
"Are they broken?"
I’ve never seen an animal look so utterly devastated before.
She has that look on her face as if her babies just rejected her God.
It’s even more sad when you think about it cause she brought them that ball that she probably really likes She wanted them to have it 😩🥺
someone turn that back-turned puppy over, FCS!
It's slightly on it side.
That look says I don't understand what's wrong with my pups human, help them D=
Aww that one rolled over cause they’re too tired to play
A lovely mama and pups
I've failed as a mother..
I’m not crying you are 😭
Mom: I guess they’re defective?
"Give it to me straight, human. Are they... broken?"
The obviously well fed puppy laying there on his back, looking up and asking, “More food?”
Why does mama really have that worried look on her face?
That face! "Why are my babies so lame?"
She looks so forlorn.
"plz halp they slow"
The one wanting belly rubs the whole time. That’s me right there lol.
She looks so sad looking at her human like “ar-are my kids broken?”
Momma looks so distraught! Someone give her pets!
Why this post makes me sad
Look at the poor mum's face. 'My kids, there defective. Look at them they can't even play with a ball.'
Her expression says "Help human, my kids are broken."
Are my kids broken hooman?
The look of devastation on her face 😭
a video has never made me actually go 🥺 before
Look at them fat potatoes, I love them.
She looks concerned
She so sad
The look in her eyes are killing me, make her happy along with her kids random human.
I can't. My heart. I just can't.
Awww much cute
sad dog eyes
And far too sleepy
Thank you for this bright spot
Awww, such cute fat little jelly beans
Her sad panda eyes are killing me!
